Check this CODE Before Buying New Tires!

  • How do you check how old tires are and how old can tires be before they go bad? Do tires expire? In this #shorts video I cover how to tell how old tires are. You never want to buy new tires older than 18 months and you want to start thinking about replacing your tires if they are 6yrs old and at 10yrs or more definitely replace them!
When I got my first set of new tires for my first car I was so excited. On the drive home I spun out on a turn and almost wrecked my car. I didnt take the turn fast or anything and I was so confused at what happend. After doing research I found my "new tires" were actually 7 years old and the rubber had become brittle and less grippy. Tire-easy would not let me exchange the tires because they were mounted so I learned an expensive and almost deadly lesson. Always check the tire age before buying tires!

    Some other info:
If you can't see the date code, try the other side of the tire, it typically only gets printed on one side.
If your date code has 3 digits, that means it's from before 2000, and you should really replace it asap.
Had a Sears tire from 1996 show up at the shop last week, that was interesting to see.
Also, someone dropped off a new-old-stock motorbike tire (presumably to be thrown out) that still had all the labels, and was dated the second week of 2000. Everyone was confused.

Tires 101. I always check these whenever buying tires, private sale and otherwise.
First sets of tires I got for the Vic AND the Civic that preceded her were both four years old, bought private sale - didn’t check them over like I should have until the sale was done in both instances. My mistake. Luckily it only did minimal harm; the Vic’s tires were a set of all-weathers, so at least they got me through the safety inspection (though not the winter that followed) - and the Civic’s tires lasted the few years I had the car.
Conversely? I had the privilege of encountering a BMW at work whose owner was concerned about the grip of her tires… and found out those tires were 12 YEARS OLD. Ample tread, but otherwise hockey pucks! Sent ‘em to a tire shop nearby IMMEDIATELY.

Just remember if you buy in 2021, the tire must be 2020 or higher. It’s one year or above. Tires have to be manufactured, shipped and stored in warehouses. It’s nearly impossible to get same year tires and no tire shop can guarantee same year. Anything more than one year, don’t take it.

At Walmart we wouldn't sell any tires more than 1-2 years old, typically they were just a few months. In terms of installation and work we could go up to the 10 year mark but we tried to heavily dissuade customers from using them. Then obviously lots of rules of tread depth, tire wear, etc. Long story short, if you go to privately owned, local shops, probably a safe idea to ask to see the tire if not providing your own but buying new from major, well known retailers you're probably safe.

Definitely true, I work at Discount tire and I know we always check the age before putting tires on. I too had this happen to me. I was driving 400 miles home from visiting my parents while on holiday. I was half way there, going 80 on the interstate passing a semi when suddenly I felt my car's front right get lower. After that, my car suddenly jerked right sending me towards the semi. I was inches away from going under the trailer, but I managed to pull it back. I pulled over and come to find out, the sidewall on my tire had split all the way around. this wasn't the first time it happened, but when I took it to the place I got them, they told me it was just a single bad tire. Come to find out, the tires were 1 week before their expiration date was up. Had to drive 100 miles to the nearest tire shop on a donut to get it replaced. Good thing was that the tire shop that I went to said that the company policy says they were supposed to get rid of the tires long before that point and those tires were actually too small for my car (tires with too small of sidewall cant distribute heavy weight), so to make up for it, they gave me all four tires for just a $40 copay.

I work at America's Tire( or Discount Tire if not from California) we always give out DOT cards which include the brand of tire, date and with all the DOT digits with date of tire. We are required to always give these out to the customers that purchased new tires, these cards can be mailed with the buyers info or sent online using the Qr code in the receipt, so that the customer is informed of any recall on the tire by the manufacturer(if a tire is recalled, the manufacturer will give you new tires or credit to be used on tires of your choice). I highly recommend asking for the DOT cards if not given one at the end of service and filling them out.

I'm currently an apprentice in a tyre shop and I can't stress the importance, I've seen customers come in on tyres older than me (I'm 18 years old) with 0 tread left, and they complain saying they have no grip... I wonder why🤔, thanks for sharing this message, tyre age is such an important factor. In my place of work we only stock tyres that are newer than 3 months old, and as we're quite a busy shop they stock gets emptied completely in about 3 months, we take daily deliveries every 3 days to keep as much stock on hand as possible.

I used to work at a tire shop years ago. They told us to put the dot date on the inside (when possible) when they were over a year old so customers could not see the date. They also didn't check balance of the tires more than once, so balanced it, put weights on and hoped they did it correctly. Then just torqued the lug nuts on as much as their air guns could. For those reasons and other small ones that was my one and only day at that shop. They were on the smaller side but still had tons of cars every year.

I have a pickup with 20 year old tires, and they actually have no dry-rot at all, and they've only recently lost the last bit of tread needed to keep it legal. It's important to use the tires regularly enough to reveal fresh rubber on the treads at least once a year, which won't have lost grip compared to a tire that has been sitting for years doing nothing. I wouldn't drive on the interstate with those tires, though.

    • @RangeRov49
      @RangeRov49 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@chrisfix hope you got them in trouble for it, since 7 years is the max tires are supposed to sit on the rack until they're required to be pulled (per NY regulations that is). I'm not saying don't do your due diligence, but trust the shop and check after. If it's not right, then raise hell and never shop there again.
I mean, are you going to ask them to do every aspect of their job correctly? Use a torque stick please, use a torque wrench please, air it per my door plaquer please, use a steering wheel cover please"; having properly dated tires mounted is part of their job.

I mounted a set of 20 year old Goodyear Eagle GT's on a Muztang once, had never been mounted, still had the stickers on them. Was the worst mounting experience EVER! They were so old it was like trying to mount plastic tires! They had ZERO give, and on the test drive they had ZERO grip! Sure, older tires may be fine for a trailer, but not for a motor vehicle that has torque turning them.

As a former discount tire manager, I can say that this is all 100% accurate. We would check the DOT of any tire we sold, and if it was older than 1 year, we would throw it away. Regardless of if a tire is brand new as far as tread goes, the rubber compound breaks down over time, which makes it more susceptible to cracks and catastrophic failure; like Chris said. Learned most of what I know about cars from you man. AWD converting and ls swapping my accord in the near future. Keep up the good work!
