Hi Laura , a friend of mine made what she called "wheelchair jewelry" it hangs off the controller of my wheelchair. I'll have to tell her in case she didn't know she had made a chatelaine and didn't realize it. How exciting; thank you for posting. Very educational!
My Grandma had one Laura, she was born in 1875, and I have a part of it. She was a housekeeper, and when she left to get married, her other workers told her that they knew when she was coming to check up on them, because her chatelaine rattled together!
Thank you for sharing your wonderful chatelaine. I have more than one of chatelaine from Thimbles by T J Lane and thoroughly love using and wearing them. Having your tools close by makes sewing so much easier.
How interesting!! Thanks Laura! My grandfather worked at the post office and he had the neatest retractable key holder. Must have had 50 keys on it!! They gave him a gold one when he retired (many many years ago!) Guess he was the chatelaine for our mail & P.O. boxes!!!! 💞
Very well described. I've had one for years and years. Part old and part new. Perhaps more of the young girls will want to get into them... too nice to keep in a box. I forget to wear mine. Or, parts of it. Thanks for explaining so well.
Oh my goodness! I learned something new today 😊 I had not heard of a chatelaine before....or at least I didn’t know the proper name for it. Yours is so beautiful and still so very practical!
Thank you Laura for sharing the info. I learned something new today. I'm sure I had seen these before but never questioned what they were. Very useful!! : )) I love your videos!!
Gorgeous. I always wanted to make/embroider a chatelaine for my scissors. Speaking of gorgeous, may I say how beautiful your hair is in this video. You are always well groomed, and today even more so.
I have seen fine hand-sewing tools hung directly on the links of a beautiful neck chain, so I thought that assemblage constituted a chatelaine. Thank you for this lesson, definition, and illustration. (Wish I would have had this back 50 years ago. It would have made a knock-out illustrated talk for 4-H!) ;)
I am going to send the link to my husband. This will stop the questions "What you want for your birthday or Christmas? " He will enjoy picking out items and building a chatelaine for me.
I’m glad someone asked, it’s just so beautiful! When I️ first saw the pincushion ring, I️ wondered if it could be...........and I’ll be darn if it was what I️ thought. I’m learning so much, and this is amazing!!
so very much victorian keychain. and on the last point YES i was thinking that the whole time. The iconic lesbian caribner dripping with useful tools and oddities is absolutely the modern descent :)
Just love yours :) Always interested in things from times gone by, I am happy to see they are alive and well. Not sure it would be practical for me to have one ...doesn't stop me from dreaming. I did have a thread cutter necklace, until it wanted to live with my sister.LOL
Very interesting. I love the true antique ones, but it doesn’t seem many of them are still around. Having one made of sterling silver will help it to survive. Sure wished your links opened up. Couldn’t only open the Etsy link.
Thank you for this new historical insight! I had once thought that they were so obscure that I would not be able to find much information about them. Your chatelaine is so beautiful! I wonder why I do not see more of these around now. Did you happen to see Lucy Corsetry’s video on her hand-made chatelaine? If you have not, I would recommend it. Her chatelaine was more of a vintage-inspired decorative item of sorts, but I loved it. I just loved the idea. I will probably not be able to afford any of TGLane’s for a while, but I definitely need to make my own functional Steampunk chatelaine. As a postscript, do you happen to know of any other places that might sell or make chatelaines or possibly less expensive alternatives?
SewVeryEasy Oh, okay, what did you think of her version? I have started collecting some things for making my own. It is hard finding actual vintage pieces sometimes.
WOW!! I checked out the website because these are gorgeous and handy...BUT....you have to be rich to afford anything, I could not believe the prices. Guess poor folk like me don't deserve one, WOW!!!!
