So cool! It hadn't occurred to me that there was a more recent equivalent, and attached to the belt is arguably more wearable in modern attire. I might need to design a modern version for myself to keep ready those little things that I need all the time but constantly sink to the bottom of my purse.

This makes me think of lanyards, like when I was younger carrying keys on your lanyard was a pretty common thing. ( I lived in a dorm and keeping your room key on you at all times hands free was super important, and the office I worked in prepandemic times you had to have your employee id visible at all times/need it to scan into the building and your department) so maybe that's the modern equivalent?

Dropped off for a while, but then started back up recently for trips to amusement parks-I wanted my not-easily-replaced items on me in a way that most parks don’t make you leave in a cubby or locker (phone, ID, CC, keys), so I started wearing them on a lanyard that could be tucked in my shirt to keep it from flying off.
@@aubreyackermann8432 This is hilariously true. I look young for my age, and in high school this unfortunately made me look like a middle schooler. But even then, when I walked around wearing a lanyard people assumed I was a teacher and said as much.
I’m an RN, and discovered that Victorian Nurses wore chatelaines on their uniforms with specific tools helpful while they carried out their nursing duties. Chatelaine are fascinating.
I absolutely need one of these now! Also, this reminds me of something common among the butch lesbian community, which is having all sorts of multi-tools and useful things on a keychain that's kept clipped to your belt loop. It's become a bit of a joke, but as someone who wore one for years, it's incredibly useful and honestly empowering. So fun to see there's a historical connection!!

The way she used her apple watch on the chatelaine makes me think it would be cool to find a sort of clasping hinged cover that would make it actually look like an antique pocket watch.
My "Key chain" which actually hangs off my belt loop, is a large Carabiner, with smaller carabiners hanging off it that carry various things that are useful in my weekly life. I have my keys, house and car on separate, a bottle opener, a mini multi-tool, eyeglass screwdriver, hair ties, and a couple of thumb drivers. It's not fancy, nor even vaguely historical, but I think it's a modern equivalent. After watching this, I may have to add my Pokemon Go watch! And it certainly announces my presence!
@@InkandPaintMagik I....may have misspoke calling it a watch. It's a little thing that can sit on my wrist like a watch and turns pokestops for me, and tosses normal pokeballs at pokemon in range, attempting to catch them, all while I'm not actively playing. it's mostly function, not really form.
I dress in a more traditionally masc way (trousers, waistcoat, jacket or coat etc) so the closest thing to a chatelaine that I've worn is either a double pocket watch chain or a watch fob. I've been eyeing chatelaines on Etsy for a bit, but I think this video convinced me to finally pick one I can customize :) Lovely video, you got a new subscriber today!
Hello, internet stranger. I definitely scrolled too fast and thought your username was "Steampunch". I thought you maybe moonlighted as a steampunk graphic novel protagonist. 😉 Carry on! Please let us people in comment world know if you start carrying a chatelaine on your person. I hope I see chatelaines in public! It'd be rad.
Her reference to "taking up space" reminded me of something a professor once said to me in college: "Sometimes, the greatest act of resistance is simply to continue to exist."
I love the apple watch fob you created. And wearing the watches like that (upside-down to others) is historically accurate. And you two were just having too much fun with this!
Years ago, my dad made a beaded chatelaine for my mom. She used it for her cross stitch notions, and of course, her high quality embroidery scissors. Loved seeing you put together yours!
Chatelaines are so beautiful and fun! The comparison to pockets makes me think, though, what about pickpockets? Especially since they make your belongings visible. I think I would probably use a chatelaine as a toolkit, like Cheyney described them at the beginning, and customize it with useful tools for every day, but nothing that looks particularly valuable. I love the idea of little scissors, hand sanitizer, and a small notepad and pen on a chatelaine. I definitely had a couple of tiny notepad keychains when I was a kid!
I was introduced to chatelaines recently and it was a “where have you been all my life” moment. Making one of my own has definitely moved up on my list of things to do list ❤️
I’m procrastinating cleaning my house scrolling through antique chatelaines as we speak! I used to keep every important thing I own attached to my key ring. This is an actually useful version of that!
I haven’t been this excited about a make-this-odd-thing since Samantha Bullat made her ruff video . . . I sincerely hope you cause chatelaines to make a comeback with this video-I would be ecstatic if there was an explosion of dope makers and artisans making a wide visual array of chatelaines. I fear really using an old one and hastening its demise 😅 Also, the “what would the modern equivalent be?” query reminded me of the LOADED mid-to-late 90’s backpack keychains with Tamagotchi, tiny magic 8 balls, color-changing mood fobs shaped like dolphins and unicorns, etc. Y’all made my week (and future costumes) excellent-thanks!!!
OH MY GOD. Guys, I'm almost crying over here. For years I've been finding ways to attach carabiners to my belt for hanging common items.... as a _coping strategy_ for _ADHD._ Between its purpose - a device that helps me function - and the judgy looks and teasing comments it tends to bring, it's never, ever, EVER occurred to me that this might have been a fashion statement. Y'all have provided an incredible gift; I'm sincerely grateful. 🥰🥰🍍
This video was so so interesting and entertaining! Thank you so so much! The Anthropologist in me is giddy. I find the idea of women using Chaterlains as an external symbol of her status in the society so fascinating. If you are a doctor, you need a stethoscope, if you are a carpenter you have your hammer. These objects are part practicality, and part symbol, like so many things. It looks awesome, your happiness when you were trying it on made my day. I wish every child had history and social studies teachers like you.
This is so cool!!!! Especially once you got the color coordination down- it really became fashionable and functional. The concept reminded me of a lot of people where I work. It’s an animal shelter, so lots of outdoorsy types. A lot of them have a carabiner on their belt loop with keys, clickers for dog training, multi-tools, hand sanitizer, etc. They definitely don’t intentionally style them, so this is like the fashionable version of that!
I recently made a chatelaine from an old hair ornament that the clip broke off the back of, used some chains and attachments from the old jewellery kit at my grandmothers place from when my grandad used to make and repair jewellery, and repurposed my old sewing kit for the scissors and needle case! I still have a few things to add, and you’ve inspired me with the AirPods and Apple Watch attachments!
genius. these could totally come back with the overall more historical silhouettes the younger folks are drawn to these days. give it a few decades and watch as stays, chatalaines, and capes all make a resounding comeback with futuristic twists like this.
I love this riff on Everyday Carry. I really liked seeing how the contents/arrangement of your chatelaine changed after some daily use. Really interesting.
Love it! I have something similar. I'm an eyeglass wearer. Before eyeglasses with arms to go over the ears became common men would have retractable chain brooches that their glasses or magnifiers would hang from. I got so excited when I read about that. I have this weird thing going on where I don't need glasses anymore for reading or close up work but I do for things that are a few feet away. Now I have my glasses dangling from a modern retractable lanyard when I read or handsew. It makes me feel so old-fashioned.
I've been keeping my keys and Leatherman like this for years. I never even thought about it being a modern version of my antique chatelaine. Love the collaboration 💕
I have found my people. I was fascinated by chatelaines as a child, you have just sparked my interest in a big way, thank you ladies for this collaboration!
This vid makes me want one of these. It’s funny because I basically use my lanyard this way. I have clips and key rings that hold my phone, keys, AirPods, and ID card, masks, and hair ties, and I carry it around with me pretty much everywhere.
+1 and no shade to anybody who prefers wearing it around their neck (or shoving the whole thing in a pocket or bag), but wearing it around your waist seems so much easier to me, but it does require a belt of some sort.
I CANNOT get over how cool this is!!! I don't dress in vintage- or historical-style clothing, but my mind is now buzzing with ideas on how I can adapt this concept to suit my way of dressing. I love the message at the end of doing this with what's on hand, without breaking the bank. Btw, I'm just discovering your channel, and I think you have amazing content.
This is crazy! I'm in the ADHD community. As ADHD'ers, many of us are known for losing everything that's not physically attached to our bodies. I have ADHD friends who've come up with exactly this solution to solve that problem! They'll wear keys and similar on chains on their trousers, and you can always hear when they're approaching from the cling clang of the items I can't believe that it's not just something we've come up with to manage our ADHD, but something that actually has a name and has existed for centuries! That's wiiiild! I can confirm that it's extremely practical and functional Thank you so much for sharing!
My grandmothers in India use a very similar contraption that mainly holds keys! It's basically a decorative keychain that hooks onto the sari, and same as this one, it jingles when they walk :) Never knew this was a thing in other cultures too
The mention of how the jingle of a chatelaine announces a woman's presence to the room makes me think of Victorian novels where a character's entrances and exits from scenes get announced by the smell of her perfume, the rustle of silk, etc. It's funny how you don't really see consciously taking up space as a prominent element of feminine dress anymore. The only modern equivalent of that "hello, I am a woman in this space, you WILL notice me" vibe I can think of is heels, and even then the sensible (and quieter) flat has taken over in a lot of places where heels used to be de rigueur. Also, unrelated, that blouse is INCREDIBLE, oh my gosh.
This video offers so much pleasure. I love seeing the two of you presenting the chatelaine in a way that transforms and allows it to straddle time periods. As always Cheney, I love your use of fabric and silhouette to create a garment that defies time, location and status. I got to get me one of those chatelaine and some of that Ankara fabric.
Well, you've just convinced me to add a chatelaine to my dream "historical mix" outfit. A 14th Century houppelande, a 16th Century girdle, and now the chatelaine! Nice!
Huh, if we count keys keychains as something similar... I have keys, a pouch that everything fits into, a tiny compass, a keychain LED torch (harry potter wand style) that stays outside the pouch & two trinkets - an Egyptian gold & aqua cat & a mini Rosetta Stone! My mom doesn't put the keys inside the pouch, she puts a little loose change in it, & has keys & a trolley coin on it.
Omgosh I learned something new before my coffee today! I love how everyone relates it to something a little different. I see it as a Leatherman or Swiss Army Knife. So coooool!
This is so cool! It was really interesting to watch. Something I thought of during the video is the punk waist chain, that people who wear alternative, punk and goth fashions often wear. Often in these chains there's a big circle ring near the clasp that's bigger the rest of the chain. That would be a neat place to hang a chatelaine from, and maybe another way to merge it with more modern outfits.
Wallet chains! Same! Also how I’d attach my keys to a lanyard attached to my purse so I could always pull the string to find my keys. So many amazing things went out of style for no reason! They are so awesome looking too! I’m all over antique eBay right now 🤤
I had a little Sanrio purse, very expensive that I wanted to show but didn't know how... I just hung it up in my belt with chains. Since my outfit didn't had any pockets I just put on the chains anything I needed, my keys, my cardholder, my mini-purse and my phone was chained too. It was an absolute hit between my fashion fellows on the Santiago-harajuku fashion walk 🌼🌸✨
I remember when I first saw one in a museum, I had to just stop dead in my tracks and stare at it in awe. There was a little needle case, a small pin cushion, scissors ... it was amazing! ❤ I definitely need to make my own now. I mean, I do clip my keychain to my belt loop when I have one, but it's not quite the same. It needs more ... usefulness. More pizzaz.
As a disabled person I can't hang things off a belt, but I have keys on a lanyard which is now going to be transformed! Thanks for your awesome content!
This was so much fun! I love your comparison of a chatelaine to a tool belt. It looks like you had a lot of fun figuring out both what you really wanted to have on it, and how you wanted to style it.
I cannot believe these didn't make a comeback in the early 2000s when we were all wearing layers of belts and chains! This was absolutely delightful :) It's been a while since I broke out my jewelry supplies but I might have to try making one... Also, I love you emphasis on trading and taking your time to reduce consumption and not break the bank!
I’ve started wearing a leather belt that you tie on with a little pouch on it for day to day endeavors. I want to add a phone pouch (I think I can crochet this) and now I guess I have to get a chatelaine! I love the elegance of it. I wonder if I could attach cologne, so I’ll actually wear it.
Now I need to figure out how to hang my asthma spray.. maybe some leather straps with snaps on one of these pull out strings (like a dog leash or to be found on ski passes), so I don't have to remove it from the chatelaine.
Hi I'm from Brazil, this is the first video of yours that I've seen, I loved this video, I think I'm going to make my own, since in my work sometimes I need to carry one or another thing in my hand and as it is inconvenient to use a bag this is a good option for me...❤❤❤
So fun to watch you two enthuse over the chatelaine! It turned out great and I really appreciate that you showed the updated version as you perfected it.
That looks like my work key collection that I wear around my neck with my I'd card to stop loosing them ... you can hear me coming a mile away clink clink 😁
I love chatelaines for when I'm doing any sort of needle work and when I'm tatting. My favorite is shaped like a cat and it pins to my shirt instead of hooking onto a belt
Magnificent! It just came to mind that Chatelaines live on today as carbiners; I keep a few small tools on my carabiner along with my keys. I enjoy how customizable the Chatelaine/carabiner method is, as opposed to Swiss army kives, because with the latter you can't swap out tools that are less useful to you as an individual.
I LOVE THIS! 😄 It's both sooo beautiful and so incredibly practical. Carpenters still have their version with their toolbelts, I don't understand why women stopped using this version.
Chatelaines always remind me of nuns. The head nun at my school wore on filled with keys and a note book and pen attached. We didn't know what it was called but we could hear her coming!
Vet tech here!!! I have found my much searched for solution to keeping all my various items in one accessible place!!! My nail clippers, scissors, a pen that doesn’t disappear the second I put it down, thermometer and alcohol wipes are now LITERALLY AT HAND. Thank you ladies for bringing back the chatelaine!!!
Two of my favorite TH-cam historians in one video?? About one of my favorite historical fashion items??? Hell yeah!!!! Edit: I just finished the video! Your chatelaine turned out beautifully, and I really admire your philosophy and approach to collecting, trading, and refurbishing items for your projects! Absolutely amazing 💙
this is the most adorable video I have ever seen, it's just two time travelers being excited about a modernized chatelaine!!!! It's so pretty and smart!!!!
Love the idea, always wanted one like the one in my Nains' cabinet of curiosities, but as I'm outdoors mostly I will stick with the basket full of snips , pruning saw , twine etc. No point an a mobile phone as no signal and if it's getting dark it's time to walk home. However my summer canvass gardening skirt which is 20 years old and has deep pockets in which a pair of scissors live is my daily garb in the woods ideal for cutting briars that threaten to entangle. So glad someone is telling people to stop spending on tatt. The planet can't afford it.
I have always been fascinated by chatelaines since I first learned about them and they are definitely something I could and would use instead of having to dig into my purse for hand sanitizer or chap stick or if I needed to write a quick note. Having something on it that I could snap a quick picture with would be so ideal instead of feeling so inconspicuous pulling out my phone and I do this frequently with things I want to possibly buy later on and don't want to forget
perfect timing! i go to burning man and we do gifting culture, so i was thinking of making themed chatelaines for people for the burn. yay synchronicity lol
I'd recommend having a couple carabiners and kilt pins (giant sturdy safety pins) on hand - that way they can be attached directly to a jeans belt loop, or pinned onto a t-shirt, so you won't have to rely on people wearing belts
love your modern thinking on the apple watch addition... i have seen these for years in old phots but never knew it had a name... thank you for the education...
OMG! I need a chatelaine in my life! ASAP! This is the best idea I have seen in a long time! It will definitely make up for the tinny pockets or the lack of those in our today clothes. A must for me will have to be a lip balm, sanitizer and maybe cuticle oil. I just love this idea! I can't get over it! 😍😍😍 I need to figure out a way to diy it. I have soo many things in my house that could work, definitely going to be looking how it's made so I can work around it and make one.
Watching the sheer joy of you trying on your chatelaine and seeing how it works warms my heart! I found your channel and I live everything about it. I'm a history teacher and I am going to use your videos in my classroom! Please keep making videos!
I'm obsessed by chatelaines. When I became a housekeeper and manager for airbnbs I had so many keys! I made a modern chatelaine of a bunch of tiny carabiners on a chain but I want scissors and some more aesthetic look to my chatelaine.
This was my first time hearing about chatelaines and they are pretty cool! They remind me of the lanyard I used to carry around at college. I liked the update on what items you added on your chatelaine based on your daily use.
My modern adaptation of this is putting things on carabiners that I either clip to my belt loop or my belt pouch's belt, if I'm not wearing something with a belt loop. And yes, with keys for 7 buildings hanging from my belt on one side and my car key and fob hanging on the other side, everyone hears me coming!! The rest of the stuff I use for work is crammed in the pockets of my cargo pants into specific pockets so I always kno where to look: mini flashlight, drywall knife and folding knife in one hip pocket, vinyl gloves in the other hip pocket, my smartphone, a notebook, pen, sharpie and any receipts I accumulate go in one thigh pocket and the multi-screwdriver, extra driver bit set, and mini first-aid kit go on the other. Occasioanlly I'll add something like a measuring tape or stud finder or granola bars (gotta have snacks!), but that makes extra bulk so I only grab those if I think I or my partner who doesn't wear pockets are going to need them. When I have to take off my wristwatch and rings for safety reasons, they go on one of the extra carabiners on my beltpouch.
What a wonderful idea. These are so useful. They remind me of when I worked as a veterinary nurse and we used a carabiner to hold bandage scissors, stitch cutters, nail trimmers, and then had necklaces with clocks for heart rates. I had forgotten about these until I saw your video. I would recommend these to nurses anywhere, but now you have opened my eyes to putting something together for my everyday life. Thank you for doing this series.
chatelaines are like the historical version of carabiner-ing your keys/things to your belt loops. I love what you're doing and I so want to make my own, they're so useful!

I hope I see chatelaines in public! It'd be rad.
Townsends and sons on the internet have some very reasonable prices for their chatelaines.
Her reference to "taking up space" reminded me of something a professor once said to me in college: "Sometimes, the greatest act of resistance is simply to continue to exist."
Yes, great point. Us larger women often feel the need to apologise for just being ourselves.
I love the apple watch fob you created. And wearing the watches like that (upside-down to others) is historically accurate. And you two were just having too much fun with this!
I’m reminded of nurse watches that they pin to their uniform/scrubs, because those watches are also upside down for the same reason.
@@rollerblaze5041 it's not procrastinating, it's delayed gratification! You're delaying the housework, and that's very gratifying 😆
@@andreamakesthings851 - .^_^. | .^_^. | .^_^.
I fear really using an old one and hastening its demise 😅
Also, the “what would the modern equivalent be?” query reminded me of the LOADED mid-to-late 90’s backpack keychains with Tamagotchi, tiny magic 8 balls, color-changing mood fobs shaped like dolphins and unicorns, etc.
Y’all made my week (and future costumes) excellent-thanks!!!
I'm a knitter and now I'm thinking of making (and maybe even selling) a knitter's chatelaine!
Landyards (?) Are kinda like one.
You can buy modern made chatelaines so no need to worry about ruining an antique! 🙂
Omg those 90s backpacks 😂 I had so many things dangling from mine!
This is what I was thinking! Women had their own Swiss army knife toolset all along! This thing needs to make a comeback!
My two fave historical baddies together in a video. I needed this!!! I hope the chatelaine makes a comeback.
Best way to get it to come back is to make one and use it 😁
@@mommashortcake6647 Eventually when finances and time allow, Id like to
I recently made a chatelaine from an old hair ornament that the clip broke off the back of, used some chains and attachments from the old jewellery kit at my grandmothers place from when my grandad used to make and repair jewellery, and repurposed my old sewing kit for the scissors and needle case! I still have a few things to add, and you’ve inspired me with the AirPods and Apple Watch attachments!
I love this! I've been fixated on mini sewing kits, especially ones that look like walnuts or acorns and this is wildly interesting!
Sewing chatelaines are found pretty frequently at our local “antiques” shops. I have always loved the scissors holder and needle cases on them.
They not only show your status but also your interests. Someone who doesn't sew, isn't going to keep a sewing needles.
genius. these could totally come back with the overall more historical silhouettes the younger folks are drawn to these days. give it a few decades and watch as stays, chatalaines, and capes all make a resounding comeback with futuristic twists like this.
I love this riff on Everyday Carry. I really liked seeing how the contents/arrangement of your chatelaine changed after some daily use. Really interesting.
I'm obsessed with this collab! Y'all are so charming together and this is the most aesthetic toolkit I think I've ever seen!
I have a "stealth" version of one of these, made out of straps with hooks and loops on the ends. I never had a name for it though, thank you!
What an absolutely clever idea!
How pragmatically history bounding🙂🌻
This vid makes me want one of these. It’s funny because I basically use my lanyard this way. I have clips and key rings that hold my phone, keys, AirPods, and ID card, masks, and hair ties, and I carry it around with me pretty much everywhere.
+1
and no shade to anybody who prefers wearing it around their neck (or shoving the whole thing in a pocket or bag), but wearing it around your waist seems so much easier to me, but it does require a belt of some sort.
They'll wear keys and similar on chains on their trousers, and you can always hear when they're approaching from the cling clang of the items
I can't believe that it's not just something we've come up with to manage our ADHD, but something that actually has a name and has existed for centuries! That's wiiiild! I can confirm that it's extremely practical and functional
Thank you so much for sharing!
My mom doesn't put the keys inside the pouch, she puts a little loose change in it, & has keys & a trolley coin on it.
the unabashed happy coming from this video was just the vibe I needed on a rough Friday - thank you!!❤❤
Okay, so now my Christmas wish list includes "chatelaine". That looks so wonderful!
Take sure you specify, because it's a very popular Canadian magazine 😆
@@DeeDeeCatMom lol Good to know! I provided a link to one on etsy as an example, so fingers crossed.
Your smile is a glow that shines through the distance and the tech, so lovely to see!
I used to use wallet chains. From hot topic. My daughter now uses a chain.
Oh these vibes are immaculate and the topic is fascinating. We eat well today
I'm 90 seconds in and yes, I need to make this. And I love the history you always have in your videos. I always learn new things!
Of course! Walbarf sells little atomizers in the dollar travel section. Just whip up a cover and you're all set.
Yes, this is chatelaine goals! I have been gathering piece for a chatelaine of my own. By golly this video has given me more ideas. You two are lovely
I love the final color scheme, and the energy between you and Bernadette is so fun.
Bryce.historically has a video on this exact thing! 😊 Modernizing a chatelaine. I hope to see more people wearing them, now!
Now I need to figure out how to hang my asthma spray.. maybe some leather straps with snaps on one of these pull out strings (like a dog leash or to be found on ski passes), so I don't have to remove it from the chatelaine.
Or like a mace carrier?
Hi I'm from Brazil, this is the first video of yours that I've seen, I loved this video, I think I'm going to make my own, since in my work sometimes I need to carry one or another thing in my hand and as it is inconvenient to use a bag this is a good option for me...❤❤❤
That look of joy on your face! I love the idea of bringing the old into modern. Dress the aesthetic but keep the modern amenities. GLORIOUS!
So fun to watch you two enthuse over the chatelaine! It turned out great and I really appreciate that you showed the updated version as you perfected it.
This is the BEST collab EVERRRRR!!!😃😃😃😃
I never knew I needed a chatelaine until now.
The pure JOY on Cheney’s face as she looked at her Chatelaine for the first time was a treat!
Best colab since Dr. Mike and Legal Eagle.
These ladies bring fashion, style and grace to the algorithm.
That looks like my work key collection that I wear around my neck with my I'd card to stop loosing them ... you can hear me coming a mile away clink clink 😁
Just started the video, but you know what this really reminds me of? Punk/Scene kids and wallet chains. XD
Punk chatelaines sound like they could be really cool.
I'm glad you're letting the world know you're here! Thank you for this wonderful experience.
So happy to see you two together!!
I always need the box cutter and scissors since I get boxes and I live a flight up and get tired of going up and down for them! I shall make one,
this is the most adorable video I have ever seen, it's just two time travelers being excited about a modernized chatelaine!!!!
Love a good chatelaine
@@orngjce223 yup! Was planning on doing like a pin back, brooch kind of thing
Watching the pure unadulterated joy when you wore the chatelaine made my day!
I love how beautiful, and all matchy-matchy the finished chatelaine looks
love your modern thinking on the apple watch addition... i have seen these for years in old phots but never knew it had a name... thank you for the education...
The joy on your face when you tried it on and looked at your watch was delightful!
I cannot get over how much I _love_ that blouse. This video was a real treat, and I loved the energy between you and Bernadette!
I need to figure out a way to diy it.
I made a modern chatelaine of a bunch of tiny carabiners on a chain but I want scissors and some more aesthetic look to my chatelaine.
i love seeing how giddy you are with the finished piece. makes me so happy
What a wonderful collab! I love this idea!
The black and gold color combo is so luxe looking. I love it!
I’m elated to see 2 of my top TH-camr collaborating. Love you ladies 🥰
