I feel like the modern version of this would be the fanny pack. It's an external pocket on a belt. While not as pretty in general they fit the modern style quite well.
I hate rummaging around in a fanny pack, but it does keep things from getting lost. Tried a neck bag, but that just lead to headaches. Still not satisfied, but Ive always loved these. I wonder which came first, the chatelaine or the tool belt?
I don’t dress authentically historical or anything, but I did make the change to handmade prairie skirts, a petticoat and hand sewn shirts. I’ve thought about using a chatelaine to go with all of that, as a homemaker / housewife, they just seem so useful!
heck let's just go through a time machine back to the Victorian era (we'll take DEO, SOAP, shampoo, Tooth paste) and let's just stay there! I was born in the wrong era. You live my dream :) thanks for the informative videos
A few years ago, my friend gifted me a lovey beaded bag like that. She got it from an antique shop. I love it so much. I don’t wear it as a pocket the way it’s meant to be worn. I added a longer chain and use it as a crossbody evening bag. I love it so much. There was a tiny tortoiseshell comb and a thimble inside. It’s adorable.
Oh my, I have been waiting on this video! I am so happy you were finally able to make it, and your belt turned out beautifully. I am currently reading "First Wheel In Town' and am enjoying it VERY much! I highly recommend this book for anyone that is interested in the Victorian era!
I love the reference to L M Montgomery! I grew up on the Anne books, of course, but the Blue Castle is a favorite of mine. It strikes me as one you would enjoy, if you haven't read it before!
Regarding pockets: Dr Lucy Worsley (British historian and chief curator of Historic Royal Palaces) mentioned an old rhyme which goes "Lucy Locket lost her pocket, Kitty Fisher found it, all that was left was the ribbon wrapped around it" (I'm reciting from memory hopefully verbatim). Dr Worsley and Mrs Chrisman are resources I would recommend to each other.
So I actually thought I came up with the idea of multiple chains on a clip. Then I came across the chatelaine. I believe it was the vikings that first came up with the idea Only problem that I havnt yet solved is how to stop my skirt from falling down due to the weight.
one day u wint b able to hold all the books u wrote. they will hide ur face. lol. I just found ur channel a few days back and am saving up to buy ur books. :) really wanna know who u keep talking about when u reference ur books u wrote. :)
I love all that clinking and clacking the chatalaines make.
I knew I needed a chatelaine, but now I need a bag and belt as well!
Victorian women were so practical and yet very feminine. Love it. Great info thank you.

I'm about to make a chatelaine and learning about chatelaine belts helps a lot, thank you!
Love this video. Would you consider making a video about Victorian hairstyles?
I really enjoyed this, never thought that these were, what pockets are today! I love your channel!! (a Port Townsend neighbor)
Thank you so much for posting another video and happy reading
Can you do one on hygiene? Another youtuber I follow did one. I wanted your take, especially on female hygiene.

That rhyme refers to a very different kind of pocket 😉
I like these. Useful and they look really cool too.
First view !!!!!!! Hi Sarah and Gabriel.
Hey there! :)
@@Victorianlady GREAT to hear from you. Finished 5 of the 6 books in your series. Maybe a book 7 ???? Be well.
@@cordiscoscorner I'm working on Book 7 now :)
@@Victorianlady GREAT !!!!!!!!!
I adore these!
I especially like that skirt and blouse outfit you’re wearing. Did you make it? Do you have a video of the making of it?
I have a chatelaine but I would love a belt and purse too. Much nicer than those plastic clip on bags people wear on their waists these days.

I like this very much ❤ how can I get a chatelaine and pocket and belt ?
Very interesting... praise the Lord!
I'd like to know which part a of the era are your clothes and corset from? Thanks.
I am seriously looking into getting one
Have you ever thought of making some belts to sell on your website?

Coach, Kate Spade, are you listening?
Gabriel might be able to build a nice little side business making and selling chatelaine belts. I would like one.

@@Victorianlady Very nice! A little out of my budget though.
