So amazing! I think the modern equivalent I’ve seen is a lanyard. I always see young women with a lanyard holding their keys, a small ID pouch, keychains, pompoms, Swiss Army knives, pepper spray, lip balm, and sometimes a pouch for their phone :)
I discovered that chatelaines existed a few years ago and I’ve been in love with them ever since. History bounding them for more modern usage is an absolutely amazing idea that I’ll have to try one day!

I’m am absolutely in love with this! I have grown addicted to the idea of a chatelaine recently. I wear Victorian era prairie inspired clothing, I don’t have a belt for my skirt but I have a belt purse that looks a bit modern, yet it has loops to attach things to. Sort of like a hiking accessory. I think I might do a pocket watch, my keys, and a mini notebook and pencil… perhaps some kind of leather man tool like that or a mini pen knife. Things I use often around the house! Thank you for demonstrating how to make one in a modern sense. I’ve seen historical chatelaines made with ribbon, that could be lovely as well.

I seem to remember that there may be one or two more videos by people who actually know what they’re talking about, but a quick search just now couldn’t find them. The leads are incredibly thick, and pretty hard to find. The pencils themselves are easier to come by. I’ve gotten quite a few off of eBay and Etsy. Definitely one of my favorite antiques to collect! 😊

I love antiques and as a 37 year old man I have very few people to share my passion with especially my peers. I have been looking at Chatelaines for a while now as I would love to but do not wear a vest so the belt and loop have been my friend. This was a great video I really enjoyed watching it and I would love to go antiquing with you.

It was a modern vintage remake, but you could customize it with the parts and pieces that you wanted to add. This is even better than the original. I get to make and use a chatelaine with items that really work for my everyday life. Again - Genius!
I made myself one many years ago because I loved the idea. I did a lot of hand sewing and my favorite embroidery scissors and needle case was always somewhere else. Now that I am becoming a bit mobility challenged I think I'll dig it out and update it.
Great idea! I would have used a jump ring and opened and closed that instead of opening and closing the chain link. I've found the manipulated chain links to be much less sturdy and more likely to break than a jump ring.

I definitely want to make my own custom ones and have changeable items. Is there anywhere you would suggest getting smaller practical items to put on or where to start out? Edit: just to be clear I definitely love more elegant and older looks for things. 👀

This is such a wonderful idea. I love it. As a teen I unconsciously did a chatelaine like thing. I hang my purse, my keys and a pocket knife on my jeans. As for the purse, i tucked it in the pocket, but the rest hang freely. You have inspired me to go back to use a similar item or technique (what ever you wanna call it) to carry every day items. Victorinox (Swiss pocket knives) make lovely little penknives in different co!ours which would look, and fit, beautifully on a chatelaine. Mine is on my keyring but I might move it or look for another one to use, they are small but ideal and I use mine all the time.

What a good idea! I never thought before of sandwiching a pincushion between buttons, but that would be ideal for hanging it and keeping it flat and controlled.

I think I might get some inspiration from the way men wore their watched to incorporate a châtelaine into my life it would maybe help and redistribute the weight a bit whilst keeping my stuff safely in pockets but still adding the safe of a chain attached to my waist or maybe my neck if I draw inspiration from viking era women's wear
I found mine at Joanns for modern copies and ebay for vintage items. Happy hunting. A word of caution, though, once I started 'collecting', I couldn't stop and ended with enough 'themed' items to make several.

Yeah, I imagine big things like a phone and wallet would probably be best in a pocket. Small change purses were often hung on Chatelaines, but you generally want to keep them small. There’s a funny cartoon in Punch Magazine from the mid-1800s of a woman showing her Chatelaine resplendent with everything from a tea kettle to a broom to a full size book. 😁

It’s actually not too bad. I found that they swing around less if you’re wearing a skirt than if you’re wearing jeans, especially a full skirt. And you don’t want your chains to be too terribly long. Other than that it works really well. 😊

They take super thick lead, but other than that they’re a really easy way to have something that’s gorgeous and antique to use every day. 😊
