What do you guys think of the new Lumix S9? Will it be a camera you'd like in your camera bag?
This camera is the spiritual successor to GX85 (or GX9) in my book and I’d love to have it as a travel cam, paired with Sigma 28-70 2.8. I wish they would launch a hotshoe viewfinder option for those of us who really love the EVFs though

The S5ii has good ISO performance, this 9 should be the same.
What I don’t like though is the lack of buttons and the price. Same price as an S5ii without all the accessible functionalities. For low footprint camera for casual day, I keep the TL2
mate... It's far from the perfect camera. 15 min record limit? such a step backwards from the recent good work of the S5ii. This camera is the worst value for money but the S5ii is the best value for money. That's such a Panasonic thing to do.
At the start of your video I think you should disclose that Lumix flown you to Japan and gave you the "loaner camera". This camera isn't for me time limited recording and the price is a deal breaker for me.

Quirks? No, you mean negatives mate. I normally enjoy watching your videos but this one felt like LUMIX was forcing you to say positive things about an obvious dud of a camera, along with every other Camera TH-camr it seems
I’m able to see the positives of a product, how it fits into my life, and ultimately how much I actually enjoy using it. Granted, there’s downsides to this product, just like there is every other product on the market depending on what perspective you have.
I totally get it if this camera isn’t for you, and no one is forcing you to like it, but to question the integrity of my opinion based on your opinion isn’t very fair. I wasn’t paid by Lumix, nor did they ask me to say any of this stuff; it just comes down to the fact that I’ve actually spent a few weeks using it, and this is how I feel about it :)

I don't need it to be perfect. Just a small compact full frame L mount travel camera with lots of video options and IBIS to travel with in my carry on. Looking forward to adding customized LUTs to my workflow.

All this combined with the new "lens" Pancake 26mm F8 (!!!) only with MANUAL FOCUS !!! The ones who tout how flawless and nice the camera's AF is. What should I do with this lens???

Dang... the lack of headphone jack or ability to use the USB-C as a headphone output is a deal breaker for me with video. The lack of mechanical shutter is also a non starter for me for photography. Hopefully Lumix can get back on their game with an updated S1ii for full frame and a GX85 update for MFT.
The new lenses are nice options but where is the pancake f2.8 to compete with the Canon and Nikon lenses?
I do appreciate the use of the same BLK-22 battery, size, and concept.

Is $1,500 a joke? Inconvenient housing, few controls, slow electronic shutter, limited video recording. Who is this camera for? for fashionistas? But they have smartphones. I was expecting an analog Sony a7cii, a compact camera. Panafans will buy. However, there are few of them😁

Tbh, kinda wanted a "this app will with with other Lumix cameras" our current app we use has a mind of its own and it works when it wants.
Interesting camera, I see the move and the reason for it.
Eventually Lumix will merge the Lumix Sync app with the new Lumix Lab app, so that should mean support for all other cameras too !

Form factor is awesome but the recording limit is a dealbreaker for me.
The S9 may not be good for interviews, but I don’t think the same can be said for everything else.
I shot a feature film with the GH5. Sure, it has longer recording limits. But, in the narrative films I’ve worked in, most shots are only a few seconds long. Certainly no shots even close to 15 minutes in length. So, unless you’re shooting interviews you really won’t hit those 10-15 minute limitations.
For the feature I shot with the GH5, I recorded audio using an external field recorder. The GH5’s internal audio was used as scratch to sync the audio in post.
I also use wireless audio systems that I can monitor from while recording. To suggest that the S9 is only good for travel or TikTok videos is baffling.
"An S5II in a smaller body"??? I definitely would non define it as such, it's unfair to potential buyers.

Why did you not mention there is no viewfinder? Isn't that kind of a big takeaway for bright shooting?
I didn’t feel the need to mention the obvious, and since I rarely use the EVF’s on my other cameras, it didn’t really bother me too much :)

I agree, I hope so too :) the new app will eventually absorb the features from the Lumix Sync app and become their only app, so I think it will be compatible with all lumix cameras in the future :)

I couldn’t see a use case where I’d personally need more than 15 mins record time though… it’s not a camera for interviews and the form factor gives that away! If I turned up to a professional interview shoot with this, they’d probably laugh 😂 it’s the perfect social content camera though :)
Quick turn around social content is really where it excels!
How do sigma lenses work on lumix? Do they auto focus well
Of course! The PDAF on the newer Lumix bodies works great with Sigma L-Mount lenses :)
I've changed my mind. This this is sick. I think I was expecting something different but now I see how this camera will take something already very fun (photography) and make it even more fun and obsession. Especially if they roll out more of those pancake lenses. Kudos Lumix. You win again

The fantastic portable size with no-grip shape, minimalist controls combined with excellent modern features (FF, IBIS, real-time LUTs, video, connectivity) absolutely outbalance the missing features: no backtilting screen, no intelligent hotshoe for cordless microphones or external EVFs, no built-in EVF, no flash. I am a Sony fan, and I've been expecting something like this from Sony, but surprisingly Panasonic did it. I am looking forward to experimenting with the camera in a local store when available in July/August/September.
I bought the iPhone 15 pro max because I wanted a smaller camera to take with me in holidays. If I hadn’t bought that there is a chance I’d be interested in the S9, but the price is so close to a used S5IIX that I’m not sure it interests me.
I made the same mistake selling my Ricoh gr3 for the 14 pro max. Biggest mistake ever. Great as a phone but the camera is rubbish

@@ed61730 it’s not the sensors as much as the optics. The sensors are nearly an inch big like my lumix cm-1 which absolutely was fantastic

The need for a headphone output is not about monitoring yourself while vlogging. LOL. It's for reviewing your footage on the spot, to check on location that the audio isn't clipped, noisy, or bad in any way, before you go home.

"Almost perfect", except it doesn't have a shutter and will skew the photo of moving subjects. Seems like a sales-stopper for a photo or hybrid camera 🤨
It could get away with it if it's designed to be a video camera, but it's hard to claim that with 15 mins recording limit.
Finally about the compact size, panasonic doesn't offer any compact lenses except the f8 pancake, an unacceptable choice except people that are into pinhole lenses. Even the kit zoom is huge compared to the competition.
As charming as the camera is, it is certainly far from "almost perfect". But it's a gen1 product, and hopefully Panasonic will put the work and will be improving these areas in the upcoming additions to the series.
But what is that LENS?! - I want a Lumix pancake!

I totally get it. Makes sense as a C cam. I’d love one of these for pick-up shots while my S5II and S1 were rolling on main action. Also feel like my S5II is a touch too big for personal travel. Great idea with the smaller sigma primes.

That's Bull sh that the lumix lab isn't compatible with lumix s5. The panasonic app is atrociously bad.
Lumix S9 has been rushed to compete with X100VI but to many mistakes in my opinion :
No EVF,
No Hotshoe,
No built in flash,
No mechanical shutter,
No Wheather sealing,
Plastic build,
Silly controls,
15min video limit,
No headphone jack,
No decent pancake lens for L mount,
1700€
A new GX camera with G9ii sensor would have make more sense, lots of superb compact lenses for m43 to go along with it.
Panasonic should invest in R&D not in paying trips to Influencers, sorry I meant youtubers...

Lumix is making a camera for everyone needs. Pretty interesting to see. The camera looks good but would feel like a toy camera for me 😂😂.
I think they’ve almost hit the nail on the head with this one. I’ve been wanting a more compact camera that offers quick delivery of images etc (like a Fuji, but with Lumix IQ and ergonomics) , and this is basically that. I know it’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but the S9 has been such a joy to use!

Great thing about Lumix releasing cameras each year now is that cameras like the S5ii G9ii will drop in price. Only think brands can really add now is higher FPS and 8k codec soon hybrid cameras will be as good as Red cameras 😆
With only a 15 minute record time, a 28mm fixed f8 lens and only 30mp. A steal at $1500.....Not.

Thanks Ronald! They didn’t say unfortunately, but I know their plan is to merge the Lumix Sync App with this new app, so when that happens it’ll have to be compatible with all lumix cameras :)

The biggest challenger to this fantastic S9 camera is the recently announced Fujifilm X-T50: same size, almost the same price (at least here in my city). I love both, it is going to be a tough decision. Some features are pros for S9 and some others are pros for the X-T50. What exiting great times! It's been a number of years when I was enthuisiastic about camera gear. I am a Sony fan, but Sony lost the opportunity not making the A7C not even the 7CII a camera like this. Well done Panasonic, brilliantly brave move from the product managers!
Hey Josh, I've been wanting to buy a Hybrid FF Camera for a while now. I can currently buy the first S5 new for just under 1000€ (~850£). Would you recommend it to me, or do you think I should save up for the S5II? Thanks
If you rely on AF, then defo wait out for the S5II, however if you plan on manual focussing a lot of the time, then the S5 still has fantastic image quality and remains to be one of my favourite cameras ever made :P
@@JoshCameron Thanks, I will probably go for the S5II (even if the S5 is extremely cheap with just £850). I don't want to switch to the S5II after some years, because I need the AF, I prefere choosing correctly the first time to save some money.

It is what it is, but just too expensive ~$300. Looks amazing, but too many drawbacks (e.g. no mech shutter). I'd easily pay that for a full frame gx9 spec, but i think the S5ii nails it.
I want the GX8 form factor inc awesome flippy EVF but with the S9 FF sensor and USB-C in camera charging. Just bought another GX8 10 years after my first.
Unless Panasonic produces a decent "pancake" lens for this camera, with a decent aperture and AF I wouldn't consider it. The lack of of an EVF also makes it a no-no.
Cool, not something i'd buy.
It doesn't offer much to my S5ii and S5 bodies for pro use and not willing to part with the cash to replace my GX85 as the family/personal content creation.

It would be interesting to know if it overheats when doing 4k hdmi out while beeing charged via usb-c, if it handles it well then it becomes a lot more tempting to pick up.

It kinda works for image transfer, at least i had no issue with it personally.. but that user made LUT library? This will literally step over Fuji in terms of JPG customization..

Can you record externally to an SSD and does that change record limits?
There’s no SSD recording function on this camera :) I think they’re trying to separate it from the more “workhorse” cameras (S5II/S5IIX)
