Yes sir. Drumming gave me tinnitus, tendonitis, carpal tunnel and ulnar nerve surgeries on both hands and elbows. I’m 64 now and have arthritis in every joint. Fair statement that drumming is a full contact sport. Be careful friends and stay healthy. And great job George.
Same, add to that almost 15,000 hours of jet helicopter in flight noise, 11 motorcycles and 3 decades of drums. I sleep with hand braces on. 67 years old. But I’d do it again….
Hold the stick between the thumb & middle finger not the index finger. Dave Weckl said his career was saved cause he switched to this. More natural bounce with this grip. I got rid of tension in the hand when I switched. I still use the old way for a couple of things but not much.
71 here drumming 50+ yrs. Arthritis hands , knees etc.. Still drumming w/ bands It’s some of the best therapy. Crossovers are like mini double punches, like ghost boxing, particularly on the cymbals. George does very well. All four limbs are in motion because of the 5th limb, the head. Tweaking the brain with such rapidity is better than two Xtra Large coffees . Or whatever lifts your skirt.

I've always said that Bonham's sound and touch are the most evasive to recreate. I've never heard anyone come close. I can honestly say this isn't close. This is right on top of. More than anything I'm in awe.

In 1981 I auditioned for a band & they asked me who's the greatest rock drummer & I said John Bonham. A girlfriend of the leader of the band said "No, Neil Peart is the greatest rock drummer!". I didn't get the job! THANK GOD! ✌️😁👍
George, I use Bose Q35 II headphones while playing drums. It has noise cancellation & I know it doesn’t help because it just releases other noise to drown out what’s actually going on outside the headphones, but even when the noise cancelation is off it is not too loud. I want your opinion on if those are good for long term. I play a couple times a week. I have gun range over ears but it kind of hurts my head. What is your opinion on that? Do you think the Bose Q35 II is sufficient to avoid hearing damage?
I always used protection during rehearsals. It's all the concerts I've been to where I would stand by the PA without earplugs that gave me constant ringing.
George I’m so glad you mention those semi yet very irritating health problems because every time Iv shown or sent one of you videos to someone over the years I always mention when John Bonham was playing this solo or live show he was in his early to mid twenties George is not I’v always taken that into consideration over the last 10 years of all your videos. This is the best drumming exhibition Iv ever seen.
Resistance bands helped me loosen up my issue with tendonitis. I know this is a just TH-cam comment, but I highly recommend getting the ones with handles and putting it around a doorknob and figuring out all the basic exercises it can simulate. Bench press, arm curls etc. can be a great stretch. PT often will utilize them. Swimming as well. Heard you throw in that Roy Haynes stuff on the rim. slick!
Been a professional touring and recording drummer for 30 years and my unsolicited advice is 1) wear hearing protection every single time you play (unless you’re on a pad). In my rehearsal room I love the Vic firth cans and on stage I use molded in-ear monitors. Yes they are expensive but if touring is your job it’ll save your life. 2) learn to enjoy warming up as part of practice and as part of your backstage pre-show routine 3) learn to enjoy working out, both a bit of cardio and a bit of resistance training. Do you ever struggle with wondering if you're bothering the neighbours in the house next door? I don't have adequate sound proofing. Buy an E-bike, you'll have ALOT of fun while getting exercise. You can also use it for light errands and potentially save some gas money ;-) - Thank you for sharing!

I wish the engines of my vehicles sounded like that (not that I complain about them:) ). You mentioned two of the most common musician's health issues. Being a care taker and a non professional is the only reason I haven't got that much of tinnitus (yet) but I "married" tendonitis an age ago (on my left hand from guitar) and I have to pay a lot of attention to keep it away over the last many years, most of the times successfully with a few exceptions though. Ian Paice described his partial loss of hearing by saying "but that's just a very small price to to pay for what I have experienced doing this". Superb playing once again George, no visible or audible signs of tendonitis, if nothing else :)

George, that was so incredible Im shocked! I love the snare drum action, it's so awesome. Im sure you have heard the song " watcha gonna do" by Pablo Cruz ? The drumming is spectacular and not something many drummers talk about. I think that song is right up your alley. I would love to see you do that for us.

Hello George, I often think about the many pioneers in drumming that passed at young age and wonder what influence would they have upon the music today. I regard those past and present artists that have had an impact upon drumming as your peers. Although, I as a drummer cannot do what you do, I appreciate beyond words how a piece like this has the ability to bring us in and carry us along. This happening as you are developing the piece. Yes I hear Art Blakey. I hear Elvin. I hear Tony. I feel groove and time. Purdie has the same ability to play musically for 30 minutes, and the rhythms are methodical and soothing. Thank you for your influence and impact upon drumming.

Thank you for posting this. I have had numerous cervical and lumbar surgeries in the past 1.5 years and still have neuropathy in both arms and legs. I want to get back to playing, and this workout is now one I plan to use! Great post!!

I’d be down on my knee twiddling with my pedals at soundcheck and *crack* he’s whaling on that snare! F**ked me up for life. Glad you’re addressing the issue.
Brilliant- such a brilliant demonstration of fabulous Bonham / Terry work out. You seem so relaxed as you do it. The build up and fluency is fantastic. Agree absolutely with your health comments. Sorry to hear you have tinnitus and some tendinitis. I too have tinnitus from playing without protection when younger and also through working in steel and paper mills. Also have some arthritis in the base of my left thumb meaning I have to change grips during a gig. Walking and weight absolutely. I’m retired from my day job and walk our border collies up the of back lanes some of which are steep ! - it’s very hilly here. It’s not just playing - it’s carrying the gear and setting up too ! The drums sound perfect to me. I’m always super picky about getting my rack tom right where I want it. Between the room, mics, tuning, and your technique and feel - you nailed it!🤘
I'm in my mid 50s, and suspect tinnitus and "golfer's elbow" (all that repetitive hitting a tightly tuned snare batter!) are quite common ailments among us drummers. Since the early 2000s I've dutifully worn a set of gun muffs whenever I practice, but the decade prior I'd played in several different heavy metal bar bands, and never wore hearing protection. I do get the very occasional flare up, but would cite elbow/shoulder/upper back issues as being something I more so contend with. I worked with a reliable chiro/therapist back around the holidays for it - hadn't been in to see him in close to 20 yrs - and knock on wood, haven't had a reoccurrence since, or at least one that kept me away from playing daily. Thank you for posting this. I have had numerous cervical and lumbar surgeries in the past 1.5 years and still have neuropathy in both arms and legs. I want to get back to playing, and this workout is now one I plan to use! Great post!!

I hear you George (no pun intended)! I’ve lost most of my hearing in my right ear because I always set my amp up to my drummer’s left like Pagey. I’d be down on my knee twiddling with my pedals at soundcheck and *crack* he’s whaling on that snare! F**ked me up for life. Glad you’re addressing the issue.

Sorry to hear you have tinnitus and some tendinitis.
I too have tinnitus from playing without protection when younger and also through working in steel and paper mills. Also have some arthritis in the base of my left thumb meaning I have to change grips during a gig.
Walking and weight absolutely. I’m retired from my day job and walk our border collies up the of back lanes some of which are steep ! - it’s very hilly here. It’s not just playing - it’s carrying the gear and setting up too !

I had to get hearing aids at 51 so Protect those ears! Meloxicam helped with my left wrist and elbow. Talk to your Doctor. Thanks Professor!!!

I'm in my mid 50s, and suspect tinnitus and "golfer's elbow" (all that repetitive hitting a tightly tuned snare batter!) are quite common ailments among us drummers. Since the early 2000s I've dutifully worn a set of gun muffs whenever I practice, but the decade prior I'd played in several different heavy metal bar bands, and never wore hearing protection. I do get the very occasional flare up, but would cite elbow/shoulder/upper back issues as being something I more so contend with. I worked with a reliable chiro/therapist back around the holidays for it - hadn't been in to see him in close to 20 yrs - and knock on wood, haven't had a reoccurrence since, or at least one that kept me away from playing daily. That's great that the tendonitis issues haven't come back so much. It really is a cloud that looms, and it can be very distracting when you're playing
