He isn't just citing accomplishments. He's saying that these are the elements of his life that he's relied on to accomplish all that he has. Indeed, every aspect of him (and each of us) is attributable to these factors. And in spite of it all, he has met an obstacle that he can't overcome. At least, not on his own.

LOVE The Noose, as a former addict that one hits me. Maynard says he has never been addicted to hard drugs but he really tells the story from the perspective of an addict, especially on Thirteenth Step in an extremely genuine sounding way, maybe because he has been close to addicts enough to see some of the things that those who haven't had the experience do not easily notice or consider. Sang from the perspective of a still-using addict running into a former friend or partner who is now in treatment and sober, reborn and looking down on those still using, asking the question how are they going to make amends with those who they had harmed in the past due to their addiction, pointing out their hypocrisy when they tell the stories of their past as if it were someone else's atrocious story, begging forgiveness yet still trying to distance themselves from the consequences of their actions or not completely learning the lesson they should have. The song Gravity is like the perfect closer to that record and chapter of APC, to me it's about basically relapsing after completing a 12 step program because there was no 13th step and saying "I am high, I am surrendering to the gravity of my addiction", giving up on their recovery and just letting go. Thanks for reading.
I can’t believe how good of a writer MJK is. I can’t think of a more self aware person that can poetically put his words into music like he can. It’s ridiculous.
One of the beautiful nuances of this song that I didn't see mentioned (also I didn't read every comment) is how the song builds with the lyrics. It starts very minimal as he tells of all his accolades that he accomplished alone but builds instrumentality as he comes to the realization that it takes a village. I personally believe that is the low key component that makes this song as powerful as it is
I feel the message of this song is very clear. Its a lesson in humility. Most of the song is this man almost bragging about his accomplishments. He's faced earthquakes, winds, and fire by himself. He's conquered mountains and the forests. He's conquered his country, become king all of it on his own. Yet this river he speaks of is unconquerable. No matter how many times he tries he can't cross it. He speaks out to a higher power and is taught not everything can be done alone. In order to cross the river he needs to put his pride aside join hands with his fellow people and together in humility they are able to cross the river. Its a deep song, but not as deep as alot of people like to make it out to be
How do you come together? What is the uniting principle? The song can be deep because it provokes philosophical questions. What does it mean together as one? There's danger in putting the collective first just as putting the individual first. Human hierarchies have a long history of becoming a dictatorship or destructive force. This has been one of the oldest questions of human existence. How do you come together as one? So far, Jesus has been the only one with the best answer. For he is the river of life!
Puscifer is my favorite band. They have a lot of different sounding songs. Lots of MJK’s music is very spiritual. This band has carried me through so many hard times. Humbling River is beautiful. I always come back to this song, as it reminds me I can’t do it all alone. I really enjoyed listening to what you had to say about it. Thanks for sharing! 💛
@@topherdale9459 I believe he's been playing around with Puscifer since before Tool, in the Green Jelly days, just messing around and having fun with "Hildy", the other girl singer who was around before Corina Round. @@sunmeowlody ever seen Mr. Show with Bob and David on HBO? Puscifer was a made up band from that show that Maynard was on and it eventually blossomed into a real project.
Conquering the self is the biggest battle... It is the great work which is simple enough for a child to understand but takes a lifetime to master. Learning humility, subduing of one's passions, and loving and accepting others to move forward. All these works are masked and trivialized by ego.
Kinda, it's also about not being arrogant in your accomplishments. Don't herald yourself. Let others say your actions as you go in peace. Something i myself haven't mastered.
"Nature, nurture. Heaven and home." I saw it as him growing up without accepting Jesus, lived his whole life. And now is standing at an insurmountable river trying to move to whatever his afterlife will be. This river forces you to baptise yourself with the community of other lost souls, and accept that Jesus was The answer before you reach the gates.
Amen. Thanks for your beautiful insight on one of my favorite Pusifer songs. May gods grace continue to shine in your works here. God bless you and yours. Love this channel.
I've always thought of The River as "Death" in this song (Lost Loved ones) The protagonist in the song has conquered all there is in life except the Reality of someone's Death. "Open your heart and hands, my son Or you'll never make it over the river" to me is a word of advice to someone who may be grieving or depressed. We all feel humbled when someone important to us is lost. Great reaction though, never expected to see this song on the channel!
@Moose X in Greek mythology, there's the river Styx which is part of the underworld, and has the famous ferryman. I've always felt this song alluded to the Styx and embracing death.
I think Rivers and streams have always been associated with tranquility and peace and all that this man has accomplished has been in spite of peace and tranquillity which is why he has such a hard time crossing the river which creates a humbling sense. I presume inner peace is on the other side of the river.
I can appreciate and am reminded of an old quote “you can never cross the same river twice, you are never the same man and it’s never the same river”. Maybe unrelated to this song but it’s a good one.

The message is very clear to me. None of us can make it on our own. No matter what material possessions we have, no matter what our stature is in life, no matter how powerful we believe ourselves to be.. we all need help. That help comes in many different forms from person to person.
Pastor Rob. Thanks for putting out a video that solidifies the reason I support you and this channel. God bless you!! We r of the same cloth. Thank you brother!!….
Spot on pointing out how open to interpretation this song is. Far from what his meaning is, but I personally relate to this song picturing a combat veteran that has overcome so many unbelievable struggles, and achieved so many things, but can't bring himself to come home... emotionally and mentally, that is. Something so simple, after going off to war, as going home and carrying on with life seemed like such a simple task that you just can't understand why you never truly return home.
Maynard explores ancient folk songs… native tribes… the lyrics lend themself to the tribal drumming. I love this song. I especially love the strings and children’s voices that enter later.
Horizons and Tiny monsters and green valley are great songs as well Puscifer has great songs in general. You'll get a variety of different sounds from Puscifer.
"Behold the Crown" or "Lost in the Static" by After the Burial (either will blow Pastor Rob’s mind) and "Deceiver" or "Out if Control" by The Ghost Inside
You all should ask him on the show and ask him questions about his music, I’m pretty sure he would do it if you ask him. He is about creativity and anything that helps others.
The point of the song is simple. God doesn't care about our worldly selfish accomplishments. Doesn't care if we conquered land or face the "ice, wind, and fire" God cares that we are pure in spirit. That we are humble and gentle souls from the moment of birth to death. The biggest accomplishment a person can achieve, is to live a happy life and do no harm. The world breaks us and causes us pain. This is the devil tempting us to forsake God. To become corrupt and hurt others for our own gain. It is the story of Job. The person who accomplishes all these big feats of might, and see themselves as a king, could never cross the humbling river. Their accomplishments are impressive, but God only cares about what is in our hearts, and even the poorest man with no accomplishments of this world can get into heaven. Just as the thief on the cross next to Jesus who humbled himself in that moment, and accepted his fate was able to cross the river in the end.
The line "the hands of the many must join as one" speaks to me of community and togetherness rather than just the hand of Christ. We can do so much by breaking down the barriers we create amongst ourselves. This is one of Puscifer's best pieces, but definitely check out The Remedy, Smoke and Mirrors and Potions - Deliverance mix
God provides thru mother nature. He causes her to nourish us, give us what we need. It's end times now, so she's getting all mixed up, quakes where there've never been quakes, devastating storms all over the earth,.. all the things Jesus said to watch for, to know the season we're in, so to speak. Pack up, pray up, get ready, we're GOIN up!!!!! Ty Jesus
Yes! Songs like "Wings for Marie" and "Thomas" are some of my favorites for reasons like that. "The Patient" is a very beautiful, dark, and interesting song.
One of my favorite reactions to any song. Great analysis and receptiveness to this song. From how MJK has challenged religion (meaning his attempts to understand it, its place in personal life, and its place in society), I've leaned on its meaning to try and accept faith. Trying to suggest you can navigate and be successful in life but still denied acceptance among a faith. Then, trying to find a way to overcome that feeling
Its a representation of the 4 elements. He represents earth, air, and fire as aggressive and require brawn and might to overcome them. But water he represents as peace, which cannot be conquered alone. "The hands of the many must join as one" for us to cross this river, or to conquer peace.
Powerful song! Another great video and breakdown guys. Maynard goes deep and has many layers. If you know some of his back story you might now his mom was sick and crippled most of his life and suffered many years. He's written many songs about her and has covered all the grounds of his emotions attached to her. He closes that chapter through Puscifer in a song called Horizons, shortly after he spread her ashes on his vineyard in Arizona.
That technique of overlapping lines is called "counterpoint" or "polyphony" (the latter term is used more often to indicate a pairing of different instrumental tracks than vocals but is applicable to both).
one of the things i love the most about mr maynard is how his words can be interpreted in many ways. The humbling river might be gods wrath, or have a christian spin to it in some way, might not. a lot of things probably go into this mans writing process, so it is fun to watch people come from way out of left (or right) field with their own slant on the meaning....... rev 22:20 is a good song too.
Makes me think of someone who has "lived life" but can't find the "missing piece" so he (or she) is calling out (or praying??) to a "higher power" for guidance and getting a response 😊
Never heard of this band before, but this track sounded so so good! Like others are saying, the atmosphere was so cool. Gave me a very fantasy, epic, adventure LOTR vibe.
I don’t know if anybody else has answered this but it’s called a Canon. “ A musical technique that involves imitating a melody after a set time interval, creating a polyphonic texture.”

The message is very clear to me. None of us can make it on our own. No matter what material possessions we have, no matter what our stature is in life, no matter how powerful we believe ourselves to be.. we all need help. That help comes in many different forms from person to person.
Our Lord's only unanswered prayer,... Father, may they (his ppl) be one as you and I are One.
Pastor Rob. Thanks for putting out a video that solidifies the reason I support you and this channel. God bless you!! We r of the same cloth. Thank you brother!!….
Thank you for your support!
Great video. I saw the river as the devide between him and Jesus as well.
'The Arsonist', to me, is the perfect Puscifer song.
Thanks guys. I am from a muslim family, but I’ve been tantalized by Christ
I mean, all of the Abrahamic religions came from the same general region in the same relative time period, so...
@@TheRealMycanthrope 1,200 years afterwards isn't same time period.
More Pusifer!!!!
I love you guys! You make me laugh
∞ Love ^
One of my fav Puscifer songs, thanks for sharing
You guys are always introducing me to new music which is one of the many reasons why you guys are the best
context : robots having a war on another planet. peace cannot be
Spot on pointing out how open to interpretation this song is.
The Doomed by a Perfect Circle, with lyrics,... Blow your minds,.. it's just,... unbelievable
Maynard explores ancient folk songs… native tribes… the lyrics lend themself to the tribal drumming. I love this song. I especially love the strings and children’s voices that enter later.
I initially dismissed puscifer as mediocre and the strings/vocals sound great.
Horizons and Tiny monsters and green valley are great songs as well Puscifer has great songs in general. You'll get a variety of different sounds from Puscifer.
Ya boi back again with his humble Periphery react request! Love you guys!
"Behold the Crown" or "Lost in the Static" by After the Burial (either will blow Pastor Rob’s mind) and "Deceiver" or "Out if Control" by The Ghost Inside
I heard this song for the first time on the tv show "Yellowstone" and immediately loved it. I saw this video and had to check it out.
One of the best songs ever written.
You all should ask him on the show and ask him questions about his music, I’m pretty sure he would do it if you ask him. He is about creativity and anything that helps others.
I humble myself everyday before JESUS CHRIST..❤
The point of the song is simple.
God doesn't care about our worldly selfish accomplishments. Doesn't care if we conquered land or face the "ice, wind, and fire"
God cares that we are pure in spirit.
This song touches my heart deeply .
You're analogy about the river hit hard, the way you interpreted the song was absolutely spot on 👌
Not my favorite Puscifer tune, but glad to see you guys get back around to MJK.
Ty Jesus
I love your Christian take on crossing the river and what that river is! Bless you both
Please do "The Patient" by Tool. There's definitely a spiritual slant to that song that should be explored.
Yes! Songs like "Wings for Marie" and "Thomas" are some of my favorites for reasons like that. "The Patient" is a very beautiful, dark, and interesting song.
You're spot on with my interpretation with this song. It is a very spiritual song. Keep it real brothers. God bless and much love
Such a beautiful song.
Thank you fellow Christians for not judging those of us who had difficult lives and result to metal music in order to cope or deal with emotions.
It’s about the future, and the seemingly impossible obstacles we have to surmount to achieve it.
hello guys!! blessings and greetings from Costa Rica!
Puscifer- Horizons ….. it’s a musical journey with a lot of meaning
Using this song for Transformers Fall of Cybertron was a dope move
Its a representation of the 4 elements. He represents earth, air, and fire as aggressive and require brawn and might to overcome them. But water he represents as peace, which cannot be conquered alone. "The hands of the many must join as one" for us to cross this river, or to conquer peace.
Howdy guys!! It is called a canon when folks start singing at different times. =)
Now you can see the truth, now the hands of the many must join as one and together we will cross the river
Simply beautiful!
Maynards a high functioning mommas boy.
One of my favorite puscifer songs surprised more people don’t know of them.
I first heard this song while first playing dark souls. Man those two go so well together. The impossible river meet the impossible game!
I love u guys.... peace and blessingS🖖🖖🖖❣❣
That technique of overlapping lines is called "counterpoint" or "polyphony" (the latter term is used more often to indicate a pairing of different instrumental tracks than vocals but is applicable to both).
When I heard this song the first time, I understood the same message as you describe it here
Becoming the archetype how great thou art please pastor Rob 🙏
Great song. Peace my Friends.
one of the things i love the most about mr maynard is how his words can be interpreted in many ways. The humbling river might be gods wrath, or have a christian spin to it in some way, might not. a lot of things probably go into this mans writing process, so it is fun to watch people come from way out of left (or right) field with their own slant on the meaning....... rev 22:20 is a good song too.
What is YOUR river?
Amen Cool analysis! Right in Two would be awesome!
This song definitely brings you to a good place.
Puscifer isn’t heavy. A lot of folk vibes in their songs. Favorites from them are horizons, autumn, tumbleweed.
Transformers Fall of Cybertron
Autumn is amazing
Puscifer can be heavy... Listen to Breathe off of Donkey Punch the Night.
The Doomed-A Perfect Circle
It was a great surprises when this played tv show Yellowstone.
I think there's been a couple MJK songs on Yellowstone. That's become possibly my favorite show.
Just went to the puscifer store in Jerome Arizona,They record in the whine cellar
i love the work you and your son are doing God bless!
Thank you for the encouragement.
I don’t know if anybody else has answered this but it’s called a Canon. “ A musical technique that involves imitating a melody after a set time interval, creating a polyphonic texture.”
Rev 22.20 is fantastic especially the live version of carina round singing it
Thank you for reacting to this song.
Carina is without a doubt a powerhouse I just got to see them for the second time on the first in Charlotte wow I couldn't believe how amazing the set was holy shite I don't know how Maynard is capable of being as good as he is there so much better live the vocals are incredible they played this song one of only a few older tracks the new remix of momma said blew my brains out live speechless the harmonies will leave you in tears
A Ballad OF ALL HUMANITY, we CANNOT DO IT ALONE
Puscifer - Sour Grapes
Humbling River is a great intro song for this band!
You should see Puscifer in concert 🤯
this song has always made me think of Alexander at the Indus River. and Ceasar at the Rhine
