      Thanks again for watching! No worries, I was actually in the Apple Store this afternoon buying some things. I spoke with one of the folks there and she wasn't clear on the chips currently in the computers. She was thinking the 16 inch MacBook Pro had an M3 Ultra chip but of course the top chip available in that computer is the M3 Max. I am waiting for the Studio with the M3 Ultra and I hope it's here by June! There are so many different specs it's hard to keep up with! I have a couple more videos coming up in the next few days. Sebastian is a happy, energetic little guy. When he crashed out on the couch for a nap I had to get the picture!

    Short answer is they need wiggle room for buffer as well. You will never get a full 40gbs speed. But the right ssd you are using with this type of enclosure will determine the speed and write speed. For this enclosure go with the WD SN850X, speed should be around 2800-2900 both read and write.

      Thanks! I plan another test with a different ssd shortly. I hope to see even better results with the new ssd card although I'm very happy with what I'm getting with the Crucial card. Thanks for watching!

      it's the intel controller chip in this box (which is pretty much the same as orinco and other boxes, same chip same solution) that reserves bandwidth for other function, new boxes come out with ASM2464 controller does not reserve bandwidth and can achieve higher throughput but I heard that chip has some thermo issues. will wait for more reviews before buying those.

    Writes are buffered before writing to memory cells, reads must access the memory cells first.

    Bottle neck of the Acasis drive is the problem. It supports upto 40 Gbps meaning 4000 Mbps.

    • @paulkunal5586
      @paulkunal5586 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      And if a NVME external ssd claims 5000 MBPS its always 1000 to 12000 Mbps slower sad reality 😢.

    • @ed-tech-review
      @ed-tech-review  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      True and I wasn't really expecting the 4800 they claimed and while I'm perfectly happy with the speed I'm getting, more speed is always better. Thanks for watching!

    • @ed-tech-review
      @ed-tech-review  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks for watching. That could certainly be the problem. I also have a Crucial X10 which claimed up to 2000 MB/s but it's actually about the same speed as the X8 I got previously (about 980 MB/s). When I contacted the tech support email they replied that the ports on the Mac Studio will support Thunderbolt 3 or USB 3.1. They said to get the rated speed I would have to use a USB 3.2 gen 2 port. I think this is a problem from BOTH companies. Crucial should support Thunderbolt and Apple should support ALL USB C protocols on a computer that sells for $4K.

      Hi, I just have ordered a similar setup. At first, I almost ordered X10 pro SSD, but then learned it would be limited by 600mb/s on M3 MacBook Pro because of not supporting TB4 by the ssd. Then I learned about M2/TB4 setup and was tempted by crucial M2 plus (4800) over M2 (3600). I took the latter bcs TB4/case will not go over 3000 mb/s.

    Speed for external drives are limited by the thunderbolt and usb 4 40Gbps theoretical

    • @edparrott8588
      @edparrott8588 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That is the speed of the thunderbolt ports and unless my math is wrong that would calculate out to a theoretical max of 5,000 Mbytes/sec but as I said I'm very happy with the speed I'm getting.

  • @soapa4279
    @soapa4279 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I don't think you're getting the full 32gbps (I know it says 40gbps, but these ACASIS cases are not true USB4) because the Crucial P3 Plus won't reach those speeds in an enclosure for whatever reason. Maybe due to the lack of DRAM cache? Not sure. Or maybe it's the controller.
    I just tested a Crucial P3 (non-plus) 4TB and got around 2250 MB/s read and write. I put in a Samsung 980 PRO 2TB and it went up to around 2750 MB/s read and write.

    I've been seeing a lot of reviews of the Acasis enclosure lately. Having to guess which thermal pad to use is a little unnerving for me. How well do they hold up?

    • @ed-tech-review

      Thanks for watching! I just used the standard pad that came with the SSD. One major reason I chose this enclosure was the fan. The noise is not a factor and the case stays absolutely cool to the touch.

  • @user-hb9fp4vs2f

    Those test don't tell the full story. They only use 1gig. If you write files that are much larger and sustaining(50-100gig and up) You'll find speed drops significantly. The problem is your consumer based SSD drive. There's a small section that is super fast, hence the fast speed you see in your test. The large majority of your drive are super slow. Most times slower than than cheap micro SD cards. Once you use up the fast portion, the rest is krap. The ssd manufacturers pull a fast one on us and the youtuber people tricked us into thonking well get superior performance all around all the time.
    Those enclosures are a waste of money since your drive will never let you reach their full potential. Just get the cheap $15 and put in a large thermal pads that covers the whole drive. It should keep the unit warm instead of hot. Your speed is no worst than the expensive 40gihz units with the fan eventbo the ones with the fan will be cooler to the touch. But no performance gain in long sustaining write or read uses.
    The biggest limit factor after the SSD drive is your USB-A or usb-C cords and the ports. Maybe different on Mac.
