People who held the Inheritance were viewed as the most "valuable" culturally and the ones to be defended In life and death situations. In Lots family with all females, this was Lot. In Abraham's household this would have been Isaac. In Jacobs then Joseph and Judah would be the two to protect above all else. If Lot died then the family inheritance dies out. If the Levite man died, then his family line also ends there.
That's their world view. It's not a good world view by any means. But in a world where you couldn't afford to live as an "individual" but had to survive by means of community, men ended up most valuable for "community survival," and the men with the inheritance as the most valuable of the men. Modern conveniences like supermarkets and housing infrastructure (water from a tap instead of a walk to a well) make living as an individual way viable for everybody.
This caused warped viewpoints for value of individual lives. Contrast the attitude of the Levite with the Attitude of Jesus though, who was willing to give himself up for the congregation

@@isaacmarshmallow8751 it was a warped worldview where women suffered the most. Just like the the Levite’s concubine in Judges 19 and Jephthah’s daughter in Judges 11. I don’t think an explanation of cultural worldviews is relevant. Just an acknowledgement that it was wrong. I’m a Christian. I love Jesus and believe in the sovereignty of the Bible. But I hate it when men try to justify these actions by explaining context or culture to me. God uses messed up people to do great things and that is the righteousness we can all identify with and stake a claim to. Not the explaining away of our past or justifying our actions but being able to see that God can make people who have terrible mindsets and who have done terrible things into sons and daughters of the Most High King when we surrender to Him and trust him to finish the work within us. Lot offering his daughter to be raped was a terrible thing. The Levite pushing his concubine out to save himself resulting in her being raped all night and dying on the doorstep was wrong. Jephthah sacrificing his daughter to God because of his pre victory promise to do so was wrong. Having your children read these stories without identifying the misconduct of the hero’s within the stories is wrong. It teaches children the value of women in God’s eyes when there is no acknowledgment of the fallibility of these world views. These world views do not reflect God’s heart. God using people with these world views reflects God’s desire to lead us to redemption, restoration and metamorphosis through his amazing grace.

    • @isaacmarshmallow8751
      @isaacmarshmallow8751 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@thebrazentruth Who says I was trying to justify it? Explaining cause and effect of what made them tick is in no way justification.
And I agree with you, Lot and the Levite were totally out of line. But then Lots daughters werent the best examples either. It's precisely THAT context and THAT culture that made them think that having sex with their own father was a good idea. Nobody forced them to do that, in fact they forced themselves on him if anything. He had no male heirs. His wife was dead. That was the end of his family line. There was no one in the whole land who would raise up offspring for their father through them ("brother in law marriage"). It was wrong what they did. They were all products of their culture and time.
Even regarding the Levites concubine, it appears as though efforts were made to detract the readers opinion of her. Those verses about her being an adulterer aren't present in either the LXX or in Josephus recounting of the events. Their presence in newer manuscripts yields to the idea promoted that "Oh, well she was an adulterer, so she deserved it" (which I have heard some teachers use as arguments), which just muddies the waters. As far as the oldest manuscript evidence goes, she wasn't an adulterer. She was just awfully abused. And then several chapters later, the leadership endorses forced kidnapping against the women of Shiloh. They were doing the same type of things a few chapters prior they went to war over 🤦🏼‍♂️
Regarding Jephthahs daughter, I disagree. God's spirit was upon him when he made the vow (Judges 11:29), he is shown to be well versed on Israelite history, so it would be highly unlikely that he was not aware of passages like Leviticus 20:2 and Deuteronomy 18:10. When he says he will offer the first one as a "burnt offering", it's referring to a very specific type of offering (as found in Leviticus 1). While the Communion offering, Grain offering, Sin offering and Guilt offerings all had some parts given to the priest or the one offering, the Burnt offering (with the exception of its skin), was burnt wholly. In other words it was completely devoted. So too with Jephthah's daughter. He was saying whomever came out of his house first would become wholly devoted to God. In light of this, She was more likely serving at the tent of meeting, as women did in those days (1 Samuel 2:22) in fact her father delivered Israel a mere 56 years before Saul became King (by which point Samuel was "old", showcasing the close timing of 1 Samuel 2:22 to Jephthah's day). This is why she weeps over her virginity for months (with her girl companions), and not weeping over her life, because being devoted would mean she would never have relations with a man, another fact the account highlights. The LXX mistranslated Judges 11:40, the Hebrew word "Tanah" (also used in Judges 5:11 for "recount") was poorly rendered "bewail". "Converse with" or "commend" is a better rendering for the Hebrew. The regulation is that they would go 4 days in the year to commend/ support her, as her companions did for those 2 months.
Also, I'm a fellow human being. Don't patronise people with that "I hate it when a man does/tries/says" nonsense. If I speak out of turn, correct me, if I speak on a subject out of ignorance, inform me on it, but don't play the gender card like that. Consider the content of peoples arguments/ points of view, not the stuff between their legs. Gender has no relevance on whether or not someone raises a valid point or a bad point.
But I agree with you, women had it rough in old testament times. There is no justification for the way they were treated.

MARQUEE (Rap-Disciple) when reading the scriptures always remember that just because God allowed something to happen for a cause (Whether good or bad) He is not the cause of everything that has happened...
Many times people will read something in the scriptures and automatically associate God with it - The Bible describes all kinds of wickedness and sinful acts because God doesn’t withhold any information from us... those events have happened and they are in the scriptures for a reason.
I will leave you with a verse on this:
2 Peter 2:6: And turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrha into ashes condemned them with an overthrow, making them an ensample unto those that after should live ungodly”
We may have something to learn from these passages and God wants to teach us through history and through His word the importance of Holy living.

This video speaks to what I believe regarding the doctrine of sovereign election.
Arminians (free will proponents) cannot accept that we DO have free will, but that is the very problem.
From Adam on, man has done nothing with his free will except turn AWAY from God.
God gave Israel ALONE His laws and statutes (Psalm 147:19-20)
And said "If a man does these things he will live." They were supposed to be "a light for the gentiles."
But they were corrupt and if God had not "Preserved" a remnant, NONE of them would have survived. (Isaiah 1:9, Romans 9:29)
Hebrews 8 says the problem with the OC was "THE PEOPLE."
They did not remain faithful (they turned away)
So I turned away from them.
    So what about the gentiles?
God "overlooked the times of their ignorance," purposely did not give them His laws and statutes, purposely "allowed them to go their OWN WAY" and left them "without hope and without GOD."
    So what was God doing?
God was showing us that by our very nature, man goes AWAY from God, whether left to himself OR given God's laws, NOBODY seeks The Lord and NOBODY is able to obey and "live."
This is What Paul's message is about when he tells us that the law was given as a "our tutor to bring us to Christ," The law could not be obeyed, it was to show us our helplessness in obeying.
Apart from GOD doing a work INSIDE of us, we are ALL hopeless!
Which is why God said that HE would make a NEW covenant "NOT like the old one."
Where HE puts His laws into our hearts and minds and HE causes us to fear so that we NEVER turn away again and HE gives us a new heart so that we not only can hear and believe but never depart again (Jeremiah 32:40, Hebrews 8, Ezekiel 36)

But then it gets worse God tells the tribes to commit genocide on the Benjamites, killing ALL the women and children, God even personally helps the tribes in the last fight. 600 Benjamin MEN have escaped, after they make sacrifices to God, he forgives them. Obviously none of the other tribes want their daughters to marry Benjamites, so then tribes go and kill off a town of pacifists that failed to come and fight in the first tribal genocide. All except for the virgins, which were given to the Benjamins. Those virgins I imagine were probably raped too by the Benjamin husbands they were forced to marry., After all those women those virgins had just seen their mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters all be killed, so not happy about their marriages.
If God was involved as it appears, if he is all powerful, if he is all-knowing why didn't God just kill the original Benjamin rapists? Like he killed the wife of Lot for glancing over her shoulder.. Is it because of our free choice?

@@theadorablesearena7745 But for God to order/help kill the women, children, and babies seems wrong. Especially when he forgives the men and lets them live - the very men amongst who could have been the original rapists that initiated God's anger. And to encourage the further rape of other women by the Benjamites (I am sure those virgins were rapped in marriage... Again at God's suggestion the Benjamites force some Virgins to marry them after killing their families in front of them).
Must be hard being God but first I would have used my supreme knowledge and killing power to just kill the rapists. And send down angels... to try and teach right and wrong before deciding to kill everyone including the children & babies. Maybe I am an optimist but with good teachers I believe anybody can learn right from wrong.

    Late reply here:
Some of the comments really blow my mind! Anybody who reads the book of Judges and thinks that THAT is the blueprint for how we should live our lives - who thinks that the behavior described in it is condoned by God - quite simply doesn't have a functioning brain. The whole book is obviously an indictment of turning away from the law of God and living in a state of anarchy instead. And just in case you missed the point, the author repeats over and over "The Israelites did what was evil in the sight of the LORD."

The Bible often uses identical stories like this as a framing device to book-end a narrative arch...the question is "what kind of narrative is being told if you consider Genesis 19-Judges 19 to be a single cohesive narrative unto itself...also, it should be noted that the story of King Abimelech & Abraham follows the tale of Lot & the Angels, and there is a tale of Abimelech son of Gideon who seizes power by killing his siblings to become a tyrant in Judges 9...it seems there may be more parallels to be found throughout this Genesis 19-Judges 19 narrative, and the recurrent iteration is always worse than the precursor King Abimelech almost committed a grave sin but headed the word of the LORD, Abimelech son of Gideon committed the gravest of sins to seize power with no concern for his duty to be his brother's keeper...also, this concubine was from Bethlehem, I can't help but notice she hails from our Saviour's coming birthplace, could she indeed be a pre-figuration of Mary?

There are so many atrocities in the Bible and what you said certainly doesn't excuse any of it. Some of the early Christians believed that the Old Testament God was evil, and he was, and not the father of Jesus, and he wasn't. Quite trying to cover up and put a good spin on this. It was horrible and there WAS no excuse!!

That is a tame horror story compared to Yahweh causing Israel to kill and cannibalize their own children and seeming to delight in it. (Jeremiah 19:9, Deuteronomy 28: 49 & 52-54, 2 Kings 6:28-29, Deuteronomy 28:57, Ezekiel 5: 8-10, Leviticus 26:27-29, Zechariah 11:9, Isaiah 9:19-20, Lamentations 4:10). I am so glad I follow Jesus Christ who rebuked the priests of Yahweh saying they were of their father the devil. (John 8:44).

It's about male and female hemispheres of the brain and how information gets past
The subconscious mind takes three and a half days to pass from right to left, naturally, with programming
When you force information from the subconscious mind or brainwash unnaturally
, through fear and control, etc, you make the body sick and suffer from illnesses
The ideas and thoughts of man should naturally unfold, and not be forced in certain ways which is akin to this energy that is happening here
Energy is misunderstood especially when displaying higher science information to biblical era scenarios, but now we can understand that control can happen within and without the body in ways we can only understand now through machines that can see other light and energy within our lives today
For instance Moses was told to put a copper snake around a pole which would heal people and it's electro medicine or harnessing the eitheric electricity. How electricity looks like a snake is pretty amazing symbolic representation because it's accurate in the end results of being dangerous 😂

These two texts Genesis. 19 and Judges. 19 are about mankind getting to a point of rebelliousness against God so great, they seek to test Him by forcefully defiling that which he loves. Essentially they no longer believe in God so much they do the one thing that will anger him, if he exists he must act. The people of Gomorrah wanted to rape [sodomize] angels while the Benjaminites wanted to do the same to a Levite. Understanding the message these passages carry lies in knowing who the Levites were in Israeli society. They were essentially God's angels on earth. They received no land allotment or portion in the promised land but instead received God's favor. They were the tribe of priests. Though without land on which to plough and earn a living God promises to provide for their every need. They are to take a share of what is God's, the sacrifices offered by all of Israel. The Israelites are also advised to treat them well affording them both board and a meal to those living in their cities. It was believed whoever was kind to them would receive a blessing from God. Essentially they were witches who could cause a curse of blessing to be bestowed upon another. At this time, households would even hire them to stay with them so they could cause God's blessing to fall upon the household.
Hundreds of years having passed since the last miracle from God that could be observed and appreciated by all of Israel, many especially the young even begin to doubt His existence. They question the privileges' enjoyed by the Levites and decide they are going to prove that this god thing is a myth once and for all. RAPE a Levite and see what happens. Read with the Book of Romans where Paul speaks of sexual immorality and homosexuality one gets a good image of what homosexuality does to people. I am gay and have struggled understanding why the Bible would call me an abomination especially when I seek only to be allowed to exercise one of God's greatest qualities truthfully with the one I love. What I have learnt so far is that it is not just being gay that is the issue, but where you find yourself when you decide to do it. 'Knowing' its wrong before God and doing it all the same, means you get to a point were you either renounce or curse GOD. Not saying being gay is wrong or right, just the state of mind you get to.

The young girl was gang-raped all night. After that was in a terrible state, so instead of helping her she was cut up into 12 pieces and delivered to the 12 tribes of Israel. Personally, I'd have left that out of the book as it's just an invitation for criticism.
I've already seen that in the comments, articles, videos, opinions of people from around the world on the net. "So why didn't God help her?" Others have criticised that God did not clearly state his disapproval and disgust.
Leaving this in does nothing to help the unbeliever other than encouraging contempt for the bible, Christians & Christianity.

The whole point of the Book of Judges is to show how the Hebrews have lost their moral focus and have abandoned God. Without God, they do what is right in their opinion. The result? Both men and women in power do evil things. Deborah decapitates her husband, Japtheth sacrifices his daughter, etc. People say " Why did n't God help?" I say " Show me where anyone in Judges asked God for help." No one ever asked God for help. God gave us free will...no one exercised the free will to ask God for help.

The Levite is believed to be the grandson of Moses. The book of Judges points to the conflict between Joseph and Judah. Just proving that Judah would eventually become the head of the tribes. The other tribes would fail miserably to the point of almost bringing them back to the brink of extinction and destruction. The most common repeated sentence in Judges. Everyone did as they saw fit. Oh and Israel had no king. They were immoral and violent, lacking leadership that was Godly.

Just a roughly mirrored version of Lot and the story of Sodom and Gomorrah. It's not that one or the other story is true, but they are both false. It's easy to make this story a proverb if it had been found in a different book (like maybe Proverbs). These are simple stories with no divine significance. It's important to always remember The Protestants are a relatively young religion that is simply a split in Catholicism. Catholics were just a splinter from Judaism. If you wish to make true sense of the OT, I recommend Rabbis. They know Hebrew and their translation is just better and more sensible. I don't believe in their religion either, but christians would be amazed what they might find going the Rabbi route. At the end it's a man made religion from a book compiled by men and then recompiled after Luther did his 95 theses. The common thread is always man claiming divine knowledge that others don't have. Sounds suspiciously cultish.

God's Child - Of course we talk about real events...we just don’t talk about genocide and gore and then pretend that God is behind it, ordering it, mandating it, approving it, etc. Anyone can clearly see that Jehovah of the Old Testament is not a moral role model at all. He’s a jealous, fitful, temperamental, angry, immature, raging monster. What these Bronze Age goat herders did was to take ancient history and then grafted in that God was over it all. It’s goofy beyond reason.

@@sign543 he's none of those things!!

    • @sign543
      @sign543 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Jesus is lord - He is all of those things and more. Good thing he is also fictional. He is no more real than other gods who have come and gone over the course of human history: Zeus, Horus, Isis, Osiris, Odin, etc, etc. He’s just one of the latest popular ones. Go back about 6-10,000 years, and you’d find nobody who has even heard of your god, since there was no goat herders who’d invented him yet. Before the middle eastern Bronze Age patriarchal nomads and farmers, the most popular gods were those with names like Ra and Utu...these were sun gods, and most cultures had their favorite one or ones. The Abrahamic god came about in a part of the world where dust was the most common plentiful natural resource, and incest and inbreeding were the order of the day, and they invented a volcano god who eventually emerged in the pages of the Old Testament with a mysterious name that nobody even really knows since those manuscripts are forever lost. Your god’s history is already evolving; for thousands of years, the idea of him ruled over just one religion. Since that time, the religious belief has splintered and branched out into what we now know of as the 3 largest monotheistic religions: Christianity, Judaism, and Islam. We also now have even newer, but far less popular strains: Mormons and Jehovah’s Witnesses. This is a natural evolution of any religion, and it will continue this way probably for thousands of more years, but the influence of this religious idea will wane more more as the idea splinters more and more into smaller, less potent sects. Until one day, if humanity lasts that long, nobody will really worship this god anymore, and he will go the way of Ra, Zeus, Osiris...and all of the other ancient gods.

I believe in the Lord Jesus.
      I believe he is risen.
But even if he weren't I would still argue that we should take his yoke upon us and learn from him as a teacher and revealer of the Kingdom of God.
I have not lived with the Old Testament enough to make definitive statements on it. With that said I can't imagine living in a world where capital punishment for adultery, working on the Sabbath, dishonoring parents, etc
      was real.
Then I think of our Lord. How DIFFERENT he was and what a scandal he was because of his seeming excessive tolerance.
Telling us to NOT requite wrong with "justice" but prayers and forgiveness.
To love our enemies those who spitefully use and persecute.
Where is that in the Old Testament?
Where was any of that during Joshua's war campaign against Canaan?
Jesus was DIFFERENT. And THAT is why he said you can not sew a new patch on old cloth, or put new wine in new wineskins.
The way I see it our Lord was not misunderstood. They understood him clearly, and what he was teaching was to many contrary to the teachings of Moses.
To my admittedly unschooled eye the teachings of our Lord were a negative commentary on his contemporaries.
Put our Lord center stage in the old Testament..anywhere at all.
Does out Lord not seem out of place there?
I only ask the questions because I want to be a good student of our Lord.
But to so I must ask them.
I cannot NOT avoid questions that impose themselves on me.
      Bless
