I always found it interesting that Newstead was never fully accepted as a member of Metallica, and yet he wasn’t allowed to do his own thing either. He was never going to be good enough for them.
You nailed it perfectly Max - and considering that Jason was a real up and comer when he got in the group, it seems like he was trying to make the most of what really was a bad situation. Finally he just realized that it wasn't going to improve. Good on him for getting out.
I still remember the appearances they did on Mtv to promote the album. It was certainly a dark time for the band to put it mildly. Its all good though they made 5 incredible albums that I still love to this day.
st anger was the reason i started learning guitar, especially frantic, that was the first song i ever learned on guitar, i love st anger back to front, it was just another metallica album just more raw and alternative to what tallica would usually do, idc what ppl think. frantic, st anger, sweet amber are some amazing songs, even dirty window.
I know the lack of bass is something people criticize about Justice but I think it gives it clear, crisp and cold sound. Everyone says their favorite is Puppets but for me it's Justice. I just love the way the guitars sound on it. It was my introduction to"real" metal and it kinda defined what the genre should sound like to me. Plus I enjoy the long, complexity of the songs. I was 12 when The Black album came out and had the rest of their catalog up until that point. That was the last Metallica album I ever bought and if I knew that's what it was gonna sound like I wouldn't have bothered. Again I know it's iconic but I don't agree with most people who say it's a great album. I think it's pretty terrible actually. I do love Wherever I May Roam but you can keep the rest of it
I agree thoroughly - it made the album sound much more dark and evil. It's Metallica's heaviest album.... I think they thought this one was going to be - but it felt very short of the mark. I seriously think they should have just gone back in sat down and cranked up their first three albums before even starting recording. The album would have come out so much better
I liked it back in the day. It was the heaviest thing they'd done since AJFA & I didn't know it was "bad" production. I stopped listening to it simply because it was not even in the same universe as the first 5 as far as song quality goes, that's it. Their best writing days ended at TBA and I realized I was perpetually hoping for a new album from a band that didn't exist anymore.
If your bass player quit, your drummer sued Napster, internet piracy was invented, your singer goes to rehab for months leaving 2 members sitting in a room, you won't create the best album and some fans would hate it too. Music is therapy, this band needed to write it.
I would say that all those albums Metallica made were extremely important for keeping existing as a band.I consider being that an advancement not a downturn situation in their career like most of fans have understood that.If they did make those albums it was likely for giving priority on themselves condition in music industry, then in constantly transition. So perhaps Metallica were pushed against the wall, strongly forced by industry to self-immolated themselves and sacrife their lives in the name of surviving in a kind of music business purgatory. There was options for Metallica to get away with from there:the smart choice was to make those albums for running away the doom.Otherwise, they got flee from the skilled to move into the fire.
That raw guitar tone and occasional bell brass snare worked fine on ZZ Top's Rhythmeen album, but not so much for Metallica. If St.A is such a blemish in their catalog, there's always the option of deleting it and throwing the masters on the BBQ.
The thing is that this album plays to all of Metallica’s weaknesses (songs are too long, album is too long, lyrics are quite mediocre and broadly sketched, Hetfield’s voice while good is quite inflexible)-with none of the strengths of Metallica’s best work (chiefly the really strong guitar work, the application of an almost jam band-like songwriting approach to metal, the power of Hetfield’s mid-high belts, etc)…really the problems with this album go far deeper than just the snare drum…
This is true - they really lost their essence. I applaud them for swinging for the fences and trying something entirely new for the time, but man I was missing Kirk's solos. That to me really sealed the deal in terms of not liking the album.
Just discovered your channel in the last few days, really enjoy the videos! I'd love to see one on the Death Magnetic era, was always an interesting album to me.
Thank you so much! I definitely plan to do more exploration of Metallica - so many interesting things happened with that band, and considering that they came up basically from being dirt poor, there is a lot of depth to their story. That era is definitely on my bucket list. Thank you so much man I appreciate it!
@@guitarmeetsscience yeah, I‘m actually surprised there hasn’t been a biopic yet. You earned a new subscriber, even as a metallica fan for years and years you always dig up stuff I never knew before. Keep up the great work!

Frantic tic tic tic tic toc, I like the aggression of this ablum and the riffs are cool but the sound quality is horrible, Lars snare 💀. Thank you for more Metallica !🤘🤘🤘
I was really young during the Napster era but if everyone could just download for free than every artist of any genre would never make another album again….people are so selfish. I love Metallica and I would’ve gladly paid my hard earned money to support their work (first 5 records)
I like the way you approach that matter. It's true, supporting the artist goes a long way. A lot of people during that time realized that a lot of the artists - really especially the smaller time artists were not making much at all from album sales. That's because the labels have fashioned their deals in such a way that they take the lions share of the money and just give a tiny tiny fraction to the artist. It still happening with streaming as well. So then of course people realized hey - we will go ahead and support them by attending the live shows. And that worked for a time until 360 deals came around, where everything - from merch, tickets, you name it all got into the hands of middlemen again screwing the artist on that front as well. It's a real shame how the industry works these days, but the artists are still out there kicking butt. And it's great that folks like you are giving them support, that's what keeps it going.
It's a shitty album. But I can understand what the band was going through during the recording of the album. Check out Metallica's documentary Some Kind of Monster.
Love it, one of my Metallica favorites. I ve listened to first 4-5 albums million gazillion billion times in my life, I don’t want ever to hear MoP, NoM, Sandman, One, creeping death etc in my life, can’t imagine how bored they are of playing same songs every other night for 30+ years. St Anger is definitely different and totally not standard Metallica, but I like it.
For me the black album is my most hated. I lost interest so much after the black album that i just wasn't interested in what they did after. They did worse after but i didn't care at that point.
