    "I would reach for Red Heart Super Saver last over all yarns in life." I felt that hahaha

    • @KaeganThornhillTheCyberRaven
      @KaeganThornhillTheCyberRaven 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, Red Heart is really only good for making small items that will not be handled much or as a "Beginner Yarn".
      Also the "new" Red Heart is made by the same company that make Caron.

    Thank you Jennifer. Im disabled and cant easily leave the house, much of the shopping I do is online and so Im grateful for your yarn reviews. Believe it or not your skin issues help me to trust your reviews! Sensitive skin can tell the differences in things much better then regular skin can!

    Thanks for the review Jennifer. Premier Basix is my go to for solid color acrylic yarn. It’s super soft and squishy and great for baby blankets.

    Hi Jennifer, l really enjoyed this comparison video. I have not tried the Studio One yarn, but your knitted swatch is so lovely, I will be looking for that yarn in that colorway. Thank you.

    Get ready to laugh. I started crocheting when I was 10. My gram taught me. She only used Super Saver and rug yarn. It never occurred to me to use any other. Somewhere in my 30s Ifound Somply Sofr. Thought I had died and went to yarn heaven. Ever since I have sought out new great yarns. Now as a disabled older person discovering on line yarn shopping. Oh my goodness. My yarn stash takes up half my room. Still have super Saver but only use it for huge blankets as it lasts forever.

      @brelee-x3e 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, Red Heart lasts forever!! I love it still, but they have Red Heart with Love, which is a lot softer, and probably will last forever....I just love that yarn for knitting, too!!! :)

    • @chriscrosscrafter
      @chriscrosscrafter 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I love the Simply Soft too! But I still have a good stash of the Super Saver, it is a good “workhorse” Yarn. It really does last forever and if you use fabric softener it does soften up some. Just finished a queen size blanket in the Simply Soft and even Husband thinks it’s nice and soft LOL

      OMG I'm 42 and SAME.
      I thought all acrylic was scratchy because Red Heart Super Saver was so scratchy when I was a kid.
      Now I have a HUGE stash (thanks a lot Ice yarn).
      I can't tell you the last time I bought Red Heart Super Saver I'm planning to give my stash of it away.

      riversonglovesthedr Don’t give it away as yarn, make it up into blankets or something and give it away to charities. You get the fun of making the items and they get them. It’s a win-win LOL

    I have never use Stitch Studio or the Michael's brand. I do use Super Saver because it was the only acrylic yarn when I was growing up. And yes it is softer now than back 60 years. I use it because it is durable. Thank you for your review. Have a blessed day.

    I used super saver quite a bit in the past and never really had much of an issue with the feel of it. Until recently. I was making the pumpkin face throw by yarnspirations. I bought the yarn I needed on herrschners but then I didn't want to wait and I had found everything I needed in my stash except the pumpkin color. So I went to Walmart and found the color I needed. It was rough but I was desperate. I brought it home and it was splitty and rough. I thought ok it's been sitting around. But even the new stuff from herrschners felt bad. I really like premier basix. I think I'm going to start going for that yarn instead of super saver. Now the ombre I like. Sooner of the stripes I don't have issues with. I made a blanket with it and it's super soft. I just looked at my super saver I bought from herrschners and it's imported from Mexico. So idk if they changed it again.

    Great comparison and very helpful! I recently bought the Never Enough from Michaels. I was in a hurry so I bought about 5 skeins hastily as I had my husband standing over me waiting...When I felt the yarn in the store I thought it felt soft enough for a blanket. I started the blanket and yes--it is very scratchy. It is better with a larger hook-it seems to soften somehow with more space between the stitches.

    Thanks so much for the video of yarn review, have not tried the Premier Basix, will give it a try. I love to crochet with the Premier anti pilling everyday bulky. Works up so fast and I love the results. Have a great day and thanks again for taking the time to do a review.

    What an excellent review! I totally agree with your crochet yarn observations! I recently went into my Michaels here in Canada. There was a new display of Craftsmart yarn in new colours. Normally, I would have passed by as I never liked that yarn. But was I surprised at the feel of it! And the colour choice was lovely! Thank you Jennifer!

    Thank you for this review! I'm wanting to make a blanket for a friend's young daughter, and I want The cheapest but softest yarn for her as she has been a burn victim. So I am thinking of using Caron anniversary yarn for her blanket. I had some of this in my cart and decided to watch some reviews.

    I've been using Red Heart yarn for most of my crochet life. It was also the most readily available yarn to buy because it was sold everywhere. It has gone through many transitions over the years from soft and thick to thin and splitty. You're right about it remaining scratchy, I've got a blanket my oldest sister gifted me when I was 12, which was over fifty years ago, and it is still scratchy. The thing Red Heart has going for it is that it is very durable as well as its relatively cheap.

  • @KaeganThornhillTheCyberRaven
    @KaeganThornhillTheCyberRaven 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Being Soft and Easy to work with are both key things to look for in a Yarn (at any price point) -- but another thing to look for is Yarn that don't split. Especially when you get into fine detail work.
    Also, I do agree that the new Red Heart is a big step up from the original; but still need some improvements. Personally I usually go for Lion Brand when I'm buying up a lot of yarn (since they offer so many different products) next I go for Your top pick. Thank you for sharing such an informative video & happy holidays.

    I think the stiffer yarns may be easier to use when you're a beginner knitter, and as you develop your skills, the softer yarns may later become your favorite. I think because you're an experienced crocheter, you've outgrown the stiff red heart type of yarns and prefer to work with buttery fibers! I loooooove stitch studio by nicole! Sighhhh, I miss AC Moore so much!!! The stitch studio were $2.99 for the regular size skeins. 😢 However, I tend to make queen and king size afghans so will have to consider cost and will definitely have to try the Basix! Thanks for your excellent and especially HONEST review. Michael's brand yarn had the SAME color as the stitch studio by nicole that you reviewed, it went on clearance and I bought the 2 skeins to use on a blanket for my niece. When I get to the 2nd ball that has a band, I'll give you the color name!!

    I’m using Basix for a baby blanket. I love it. It’s soft, economical, and has great stitch definition and frogs well. I made a mistake and had to rip out several inches. No problems at all! The aqua color is gorgeous. I had a ton of navy super saver in my stash for years that I used for charity hats. I have to say I didn’t enjoy knitting with it, but it did soften up after washing and drying.

  • @bumblesby

    Interesting comparison. I am only a knitter and a new one at that. I am knitting a cat blanket in Super Saver Artist Print, and I really like it. I feels softer to me in the knitted fabric than in the skein. I also really like Caron One Pound but I noticed that different colors are thinner than others along with being a bit softer. Again, the knitted fabric seems softer than when you feel the skein.

    Thank you for this fantastic and honest review. I knitted a scarf on the diagonal with the Super Saver Americana (makes American flag design). Yes, it is scratchy, but I followed the advice from a TH-camr, and bought a cheap bottle of hair conditioner and soaked the scarf in a heavy solution with water for hours...maybe 12, I cannot remember. Then, after rinsing and toweling, I tossed it in the dryer for 20 minutes. When I did, I said to myself, well, here it goes, lol. It turned out so soft. But, it is not a plump yarn. I only bought the yarn because I wanted to make up that flag pattern. It was gorgeous, and I will be making more things as gifts with it.

    Oh my goodness I agree with you 100%. I don’t like to use any yarn that is scratchy because of the way I hold my yarn. When I stop knitting or crocheting my fingers are pink and tender where the yarn has rubbed. I had to laugh when you said $7 was a lot for yarn because the yarn I am using for my sweater was $25 per hank. Then I laughed again because $25 for a hank of yarn is ridiculous. I am looking forward to your next video. Hope you have a good day!

    I love your videos and I really look forward to them! When I miss seeing your videos, I go checking your channel for any new posts! Yes, I do love RH SS yarns, it’s what I learned to crochet with! I still use them and still like them very much. Because, most of my projects get softer and lighter feeling after a good washing and I do a fabric softener treatment and they dry up pretty much fluffy and soft! Plus, I love using it for children blankets, so they can drag it around the house and they’ll hold up washing after washing and it keeps them warm and cozy!

    Isn't it amazing how each yarn works and feels different depending on what you are doing? Being the age I am and the fact that when I first started crocheting and knitting the only yarn I could find and afford was red heart, which was coats and Clark back in the day. I now have so many choices that I rarely pick super saver. I much rather work with softer yarns but there is still a place for the super saver. I'm not in any way a yarn snob. Acrylic yarns are a great work horse yarn and are fantastic for afghans being used all the time, but it so nice to have acrylic yarn that isn't scratchy and will still hold up to everyday use. Thanks for a great comparison. Your knitting is really looking good. Nice and even stitches.

    Great review, I'm always looking for a value yarn that is not Super Saver in a large variety of colors. I hope Basix shows up in Michaels or Joanns. Thanks for letting us know about Craft Smart the next generation, the first time I picked up that yarn I couldn't believe someone had spun sandpaper into yarn. Maybe they are paying attention to the reviews.

    I am with you Super Saver is not a yarn I like at all. I just did a Mary Maxim mystery box unboxing and got a few skeins. Not a fan.
    I may relook at craftsmart...if they upped their game. I too am a texture girl and do not like to work with scratchy yarns. Sounds like premier upped the prices for Stitch Studio...seems they were cheaper at AC Moore. Thanks for the info on premier basix. I was wondering about that softness. Thickness wise what does it compare too? Sheila

    I have a couple craft smarts. I will have to see where it is made. Its pretty scratchy. I also really think the speed of the work can have a huge effect on splitting and how the yard feels or affects your skin. Also what you are doing with the yarn . For example, I have more issues with the feel of the yarn in amigurumi and splitting is worse for me with HDC and bobble stitches. I don't knit yet but I want to learn enough to make hats and scarves with Bloom and Nordica from Premier. I have put those yarns on my birthday and Christmas wish lists so hopefully I will get some and I can make learning to knit my New Years resolution in 2021.

    I would reach for Super Saver any day over Herrschners Worsted. I have not used the other 3 yet. Trying to use up the Herrschners that I unfortunately bought. How people said it was soft is beyond me. Will be interested to know how you feel about it when you open those kits. They have great colors and put great color combos together. Just wish it was softer. Thanks for the review!

    Hi Jen, I have used the craftsman yarn I have their never enough yarn in a few solids and multis which are from turkey and love it. I have basix yarn that I'm starting a project on soon but I do love how squishy it is lol. I don't like the super saver feel, I only like Red heart soft and will buy the big skeins of it. I too am picky with my yarn many yarns I have used that I like and not all their lines is premier, caron, lion brand and some of Michaels brand lines (and a few other brand I am not thing about). There are a few others but these brand I find the most. I found that if I make anything for myself it has to have high percentage of wool or cotton because I get hot easily and acrylic yarn is just way to hot form me cause it holds heat very well. Even with my clothes I try to look for high percentage of cotton, sweaters wool. For other people, child or just to make something not with myself in mind I will use acrylic yarn. I am still looking for other brand to see what I like, when I find myself buying yarn.
    Ps. I have not bought any new yarns since early last year cause I am working on my mini stash first cause of space so I am excited looking at videos like yours and crystals because I see what new or what I have not seen in my area which is nice for future refers. :)

    I am also very tactile so I struggle with Supersaver yarn because of the fact that it is not soft. When I am crocheting with it I can feel the scratching against my hook and that bothers me too much. Like you, I am learning to knit, so maybe I will try it for that. Thanks for your review

    I'm currently using Craft Smart for a LARGE blanket project. I don't mind the feeling of it. Being from Canada, where prices are a little higher, having a $3.99/ball price point is great....especially when it's taking around 24 balls to complete the project!

    Thank you for the comparisons. It’s always helpful to know what the other Yarns are like when you have never tried them yourself.
    May I ask that in the future you create two swatches then wash one and do a comparison of how they feel after washed? I think it would be helpful, especially since some yarn washes up very well and is much softer and some yarn washes very badly and gets super fuzzy.
    Take care and stay safe!

    I love Premier Basix too. But I have found that certain colors of Red Heart are softer than other colors, I think that's odd, but that's what I found. When we were in Puerto Rico Red Heart is basically what I could find in my area so I used it alot but now I'm seeing and feeling more softer yarns. Great review.

  • @Opheliamelts

    The red heart super saver has definitely gotten a LOT nicer in recent years. It is more expensive than some other value brands now, when you used to think of it as the dirt cheap yarn. I think a lot of that is because it is a USA made yarn. I wouldn't say that RHSS is my favorite yarn ever but I use it a lot and own a lot of it because it is available to me locally while a lot of other yarns aren't. The variegated RHSS always have the worst texture. The softness is kind of random too, but some of their solid colors are super soft like their charcoal grey. I do think I will order some Premier Basix to try though!

I like your opinions I don’t agree with all of them. But I’m glad you were brave enough to express your opinions. Swatches are really important in knitting, and now you’re seeing why in terms of needle size and comfort with the yarn in your hands

I have tried the newer version of craft smart & it’s better for sure but I still choose Bernat Premium (also made in Turkey) for my value yarn here in Canada. The premier bobbins have been out at several Michael’s near me for almost 2 weeks now they are $14.99 here. Thanks for the review! I have had issues with Red Heart SS for a while. It’s very scratchy but does soften up when washed. But it splits too much. The Michaels brand was awful and I loved the AC Moore yarn. I might try the Michaels yarn again tho. I will be trying the Premier yarn soon. Still waiting for my bobbins!!!!🧶❤️

    I know what your talking about as far as scratchiness goes while your crocheting with it as I have made numerous baby blankets out of Super Saver, but when it’s washed and dried ready to be gifted it’s soft as soft can be. Sometimes I’ve not been able to afford anything else but the variety of color and availability are a factor too. My stash now is being dotted with more quality, but I do fall back on SS now & again.

    One of the things with super saver is the veragated is thinner than the solid colors even though they both say 4. Now the Basix, love it just wish it had veragated.

    How much a yarn splits also depends on the point of your needle. Loved the review.

    Ok I just notice this in this video (18:28) and a few others when knitting flat sample looks like your doing raised stockinette stitch. When knitting knit side knit through the back leg/loop/right leg of stitch this will also make purple flow smoother too. It will be easier and faster for you on the right side of the work when doing stockinette.☺

    I agree with you on the super saver. I love it for knitting, crochet not so much. I have the same feelings with wool ease worsted yarn. I haven't tried the other yarns.

    The studio classic in the video is the exact same color as the red heart super saver jumbo I am working with right now. That kind of freaked me out. Lol. I love the price of super saver at Wal-Mart. Love Wal-Mart.

    I love yarn from Turkey, we get a lot off Turkish yarn here in the UK, they are always good value and wash well.

    I agree with a lot of the comments below regarding the Super Saver. There was a time that it was just so poorly mase that I was boycotting it! Love the H.L.'s I Love This Yarn. Caron Simply Soft makes my teeth ache it has such a funky feel, too me. My Mom gave me a bunch of her Red Heart yarns. I use it most often for blanket knitting. I had started a ripple blanket, ran out of Country Blue, stopped, knowing that on vacation thru three states, I would find some somewhere, and I did! Thrift store in WI. 😁 Two nice skeins and part of a third. I know that I will always find a Red Heart that I can work with. Many of the other brands I hadn"t heard of or tried. Great reviews, but i will stick with the H.L. and R.H. as they are my known quantity!

    Hi Jennifer! I do not like red heart Super Saver not even the newer version. I have tried the old version the Michael's never enough and did not like it but I will take a look at the newer version that's made in Turkey. I tried the premier basix on your recommendation, and I love it! :-)

    Jennifer would you say Premier Basix is comparable to the "Just Yarn" The Dollar Store was selling for a while?

    I wish I could find the Stitch Studio Earthtones. No shock here as being both a crocheter and knitter... yarns definitely work up differently depending on the craft.

    I am loving you breaking out the DP's and showing us how far you have come. So proud of you. My mom always used to tell me I could do anything if I wanted to do it bad enough. I bought a new knit book that I really like so far. Talking about your son and his imagination triggered a memory of my oldest son when he was about 4 or 5 at the time. We were in church at the end of prayer when it was so quiet. My son says in one voice "2 minutes till race time!" Then in another voice he says "Oh no! I'm not ready!" needless to say there were a few chuckles as everyone went back to their seats. I could fill a book with what my boys have said and done. lol

    I just can't afford the new yarns and with not going to stores , there just too much with shipping. That leaves me with red heart. I wish I was lucky enough to have some yarn companies to send me there yarns.

    I'm not a fan of redheart super saver except for house decorative items. Like ornaments, baskets, coasters, seat covers for hard chairs or table mats. I think Caron simply soft is a bargain brand (at least in my area) and its 100% my go to for stuff for other people/donations. I reserve the nicest yarn for family, my self, and close friends. The caron does split like crazy, but you get used to it. Its $2.50-3.50 at my local store.

    When you were talking about the new never enough and stitch studio being super similar i was thinking back and it was after ac moore went outta business that the never enough changed for the second time. The new ones with the labels going the way of yours are soft and very nice. The white labels going the other way are gross but the red labels are basically pretty sandpaper.

    The worst feeling yarn I've ever felt was red heart super saver in the hunter orange color. I could not make myself do a scarf that a friend had asked for. I'm sure he wouldn't have ever used it because it felt so rough!
