    As someone who does a lot of commission work, the idea of the colors being the same across different fibers is a dream come true. Knowing that I could make a piece in wool or cotton and it would turn out "exactly" the same. Plus that fingering cotton looks amazing for colorwork in knitting (esp for people who can't stand wool).

      Great point! I wonder how permanent the range is, eg for making a kind of color sampler for people to order from, only to find that a few months on the range changes. If it's a new 'permanent fixture' like cascade 220, that would be so useful!

    Amigurumi is my favorite genre of crochet, so I always recommend Hobbii's Rainbow cotton (and Friends Cotton). The color range is unmatched, amazing stitch definition and it's a real pleasure to work with. And I really wish all yarns would have a Start Tab; it's a no brainer! Thank you Toni for your awesome videos!

    This was a really helpful review overall! I found myself seeing the Friends line showing up on Hobbii recently, and feeling like I didn't "get" it. Now I definitely see what they were going for!
    One extra thing I would have loved to see was a comparison with Hobbii's existing cotton line (the "Rainbow"). That's the one I've been mostly working with for amigurumi, etc., and it would be nice to see how it compares directly with the new options.

    I'm sitting here (sleep deprived, half into my first cup of coffee) and I'm knitting up a strand of wool, a strand of extra-fine merino, and a strand of kid-silk, all in colour 70. Verdict? I love the fabric and I think it'll get even better with a wash and block. Downsides? Where's the alpaca, or more adventurous fibers? Where's the heavier weights of yarn? You've talked before about building a strategic stash - I would love for this to be a source to do such a thing with. But for now, I'm content with making myself my second scarf of the season. (Not to say I haven't made scarves this year...I have made...so many...I hope my local charity is grateful because it took a lot of work, but now people can be warm!)

    • @TJtheBee
      @TJtheBee ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Just thought of another thing: why are the balls so SMALL? I'm sure that's to cut down on costs on our end, but I would've preferred to have paid a little more to get double the yardage, especially on yarns like the Wool and the 8/8 cotton. It shouldn't take me more than two balls of yarn to knit up a thin scarf. That being said, at least the prices ARE as good as they are, because I guess you can just...buy that third ball and it's no skin off your nose? ...just a thought.

    Okay my theory with Hobbi is they offset how affordable some of their yarns are with some slightly overpriced luxe fibers. They know we can resist adding some of those to our otherwise reasonable order 😂

  • @valeriehowden471
    @valeriehowden471 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    Initially I thought the yarns were going to be named Rachel, Monica, Phoebe, Ross, Joey + Chandler. Lol
    I love the idea of colours matching across fibre blends. Sometimes you like a colour of a cotton yarn but want it for another project in wool. Less guess work.
    Hair is 😍

    OMG! Didn’t expect your shout out 😊… I struggled with whether to order their Rainbow cotton 8/8 or Friends. Ordered before your video for a temperature blanket for my brother so when I reorder for a different project, I’m intrigued enough to try the Friends collection. 9i also ordered the mini skeins of Palette! I’m just now digging into your book so that I can learn the Tunisian stitches and then teach my daughters and granddaughters. I appreciate you! Kimmy ❤

    I’ve been crocheting for 48 years! (Yes showing my age lol 😂
    My grandmother taught me when I was 9 years old). I love your channel, in particular, I never miss a yarn snob review. I may have grown up in Detroit but a very rural Tennessee community is where I call home now. Its very difficult to drive very far to the nearest Joan’s store and I am on that wants to feel and see the yarn before I buy it for the most part. Your videos take away a lot of the guess work for me when I can’t go and physically buy the yarn.
    Keep up the good work! I love you and look forward to all your videos.

    For the make-along with Katie Jones starting march 16 they are promoting this yarn, and for good reason. I normally crochet but will knit for this project, and just like you did in the video, they combine the cotton and mohair in the knitting kit which is why I want to try it. I have received the kit, the colours are very beautiful and the combination Katie put together is striking.

    I just started crocheting with hooks (before only did finger crochet) and happened upon this brand. So far I really like the 8/4 cotton for small toys and things like pot holders, I'm now experimenting with the 8/8 and will definitely move onto the mercerised and merino when I start going into clothes! It's basic but I feel like for a beginner that's great. Thank you for your in depth review!

    I'm making a cardigan with the extra fine merino right now and I'm OBSESSED with it!!! 🤩
    to quote little Agnes from Despicable Me, "it's so fluffy I can die!" 😍😍😍
    and I confirm everything Toni said: it's super bouncy and smooth, the stitch definition is to die for and I really love to work with it.
    I'm in Europe, so we probably have different price lists and different sales, but I've bought it around 5€ per ball (no idea what the €/$ change may be right now), which is a really good price for merino here, and now with the black friday promo it sells for even less.
    if I really have to find a downside, despite having a good yardage, when you work with textures (FLO/BLO, FPdc/BPdc ecc) the stitches tend to be slightly more yarn consuming than the average, in this case I guess it's due to the bounciness.🤔
    Not really a problem, thou... I hate to get near the end of a project to find out that I miss those few inches of yarn, so I always buy a couple of extra balls.
    Worst case scenario, I get enough leftovers for a hat or a pair of fingerless gloves 😊

    @knittedbywhitney 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey Toni, thanks for another wonderful yarn snob review! Something I wonder about the yarns you review is how they hold up to wear and tear? The question I most want to know is: do the yarns PILL? Is there any way you could do a road test of sorts for some yarn swatches so we can see how well the yarns hold up? Longevity is something I take into account when choosing yarns, and nothing is sadder than finishing a project I love, but having it deteriorate quickly because the yarn I chose wasn't strong enough to last or it pills like crazy. Thank you so much for everything you do! xo

    I love Hobbii, I order there regularly I love ther Bobble yarn and Cotton wool, but I am now starting to test the other yarns too. It is a Denmark brand, we (I am German) dont use "dk, worsted, fingering" but we use the exact lenth per gramm (100 gramm 410 meter is a typical sock yarn). It is more exact since a yarn which would meter per 100 gramm ist also called like this, but the englisch would call 400 to about 480 meter "super fine" or fingering, while a 400 meter yarn is much thicker than a 480 meters yarn. so if you have different yarns you can see if they go together or not, because the exact lenth is there. So that is why some of our yarns look somewere between the englisch names for the thicknes. Aran for example is a arn between 120 and 240 meter, which is a huge difference between two Aran called yarns.

    I’ve never seen a fingering weight cotton yarn before! I will definitely be trying that out as I have a few people I gift knit scarfs and other accessories for and they can’t stand the feel of wool! I’m always finding pretty patterns using fingering weight wool and I’m hesitant to substitute with a fingering weight cotton…but I will have to try it out soon!

    That kid silk looks amazing! I'm a total sucker for soft yarns.

    Definitely want to try friends yarn. Never thought about pairing something like the mohair with mercerized cotton. Never thought about pairing anything with mercerized cotton so thank for the idea 😁

    My first thought was to combine the kid silk with cotton for that woolly halo effect.
    You are right, I had a commercially knitted mohair sweater when I was a kid and I am sure it was at least DK. So why makers are given only very thin yarn, beats me!
