Hey guys, hope you enjoy this review of Freedom Planet. Going to be picking this one up? Don't forget to take part in our poll at 7:08 -ish to let us know how you're feeling about pixel art these days.
I'm not tired of pixel art games. We just have to have a good balance between good pixel art games and good modern art indies. But before i buy this game (you convinced me) my last 3 games were "Into the Breach" , "The Messenger" and "Shio" ... so 2 pixel and 1 modern :-) Thanks again for the review :)
Loved this game when it first released, definitely double-dipping for it on my Switch. And I'll never get tired of the retro pixel art from Indie devs, but I prefer it 16+ Bit, not 8-Bit. 8-bit just comes off as lazy to me. SNES games have aged beautifully - NES not so much.
I love this game! It has it's problems but it's so much more than just a Sonic clone. It's a great homage to Sega with some Sonic level design, Gunstar Heroes boss fights, and some Rocket Knight/ Mega Man X type mechanics.
Just found out about this game because of the eshop sale. It’s $4.49 right now. Like you, I never really got into Sonic. I downloaded the demo for this and I really like it a lot!!!!! I’ll be picking this one up for sure!! Great review! It may get to hard for me at the end, but that’s fine. This will definitely be fun to play for a little bit when I’m trying to wind down before bed 👍.
Thank you, I'm sold. I wasn't sure if I wanted this so I played the demo. The demo was dumb. Only allowed a time trial. That's it. So I was even more not knowing if this was for me. So I looked up reviews and came across yours. This looks really good. And the difficulty spike... my favorite mario game is mario 2 (fds version) so I love a good challenge. I'm going to getting the physical version for the switch. :)
Almost all of my favorites from steam are on switch. It’s actually nice to bring games like this and stardew valley nd hollow knight away from the computer screen.
SwitchWatch I love steam but nearly all the games I’ve bought in the last two years, at least the ones that matter are out on switch and I’m sure more are to come. The only game I’m missing is the original Galak-Z. Great game, the sequel is a “free” to play on switch but it’s not nearly as good.
Freedom planet I first found out about randomly as I scrolled down the psn store in boredom. So glad I bought this awesome game. I'm getting it for switch too
Oh wow, I can actually see myself playing this game.. Pixel art games don’t bother me as long as they play well and content I’m good.. I guess my games buying break is over.. u guys always hit me with the coolest games 🤦🏽♂️😁, nice review like always.. thanks 🙏🏽 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
Thanks for the video. Definitely not my type of game, but I was about to buy it - so: thank you! I'll stay with the The Messenger and Into the Breach this month - and the next. ;)
While I won't say I am outright tired of indie developers going for the nostalgic 8/16-bit artstyle, I mean a good game is ultimately a good game, right? I WILL say that in the year 2018, I wish we'd see more original titles from these developers that tries pushing the hardware to its limits. Games like Freedom Planet are great and full of love and polish, but they make me feel like we are still hopelessly stuck in the 90s... not living in present day 2018. While a nostalgic callback can be refreshing once in a while, I feel like these developers make games that remind them of their beloved childhood, because they long for what they had back then. Where I think they should perhaps instead focus on making modern games better? ...if that makes any sense? Take Mania for example, while it is a great game, and I know Christian and his team specialize in 2D graphics, imagine how amazing the next modern 3D Sonic could have been, if Sonic Team took creative input from those guys? Then we would get a fantastic game that felt modern, but was "made" by long time fans who have already proven they know how to make a good game in Mania.
You make a good point and I am not trying to debunk your opinion, but here's what I think. Some games are just made to be 2D rather than 3D. For example, I can't really see Freedom Planet being not 2D. As for the Sonic part, I do agree that if they tried to put their mind and heads to it, they could make a very badass game with tons of variety, fun, exploration, speed and such. I don't think we should leave these 16-bit games behind. There are those who love these kinds of games and those who love the more modern and more graphical games. But everyone has the right to say their own opinion :)
This review is dead on Right. I’ve never seen a bad review or been mislead by switch watch. This channel is so important with all the crap coming out on the switch.
also incorporates elements of rocket knight. give sparkster some credit too funny you should mention deviant art. The creator found the artist on the site
It seems to look different enough to be its own game with enough of where it came from for the Sonic fans. Another good review. I have not played soinc in a long time as well most are poor but this is definitely on my radar now. For the poll i put i love pixel art games (as i do it a wee bit too) but i feel some games are done better then others....i just want more from the former as well as these talented teams trying something new
Yeah, I might try this one, I could never get into Sonic games, not saying they are bad, but I could never understand it's purpose, is it an exploration game or a speed rush to the right? I never understood that since they conflict with each other, with Sonic Mania I'm enjoying the slow exploration, later I'll try to do a speed run, maybe that's how it's meant to be played. I hope this one is a bit more streamlined in this regard.
I've been curious about this for months, was going to get it on ps4 but not bought anything on my switch since sonic mania and managed to get some money through Nintendo points saved up so was going to get it 🤔got legend of zelda season pass instead though 😏😏😏is it worth the buy
I love the pixel art of the 16-bit and 32-bit era and feel as though they will forever have a place in gaming. They age a lot better than the majority of 3D games, thats for sure.
It's an amazing throw back... just buy it now. Personally I'm bored of the 4k 60 FPS bull and how many teraflops a system has. Bring more like this it's awesome
The last audio clap sits on the title a bit strange. The prior one is on the Owl blink, then nothing, except a slight image shake. Audio bed could transition out a bit quieter, but as you know, that's video specific. Sorry, nothing to edit or criticize and it all comes from a place of love. It took me a min on the cicadas. Not too common in the US.
As much as I love the style, I’m very tired of samey pixel art featured in every indie game. This is why I appreciate games like Wonderboy and Streets of Rage 4 for their style
well i do like pixel art however only if it works gameplay wise not just because developers are to lazy to mofrl backgrounds or charecter models also i feel this could make a good mobile Game like on android and Ios
The game ported over very well- Not like zombie panic in wonderland. Just kinda bumed about training not being Available, But as eveyone knows its PC that centerpieces on idle Atropoyhys ~.~
I think it’s amazing that Mania and Forces came out the same year. I know a lot of people didn’t like Forces but it’s one of my favorites as a long time fan and we got a good 2d title right along with it. My only hope is that the next time we get a 2d Sonic it has more new than old
Sure it's a good game but it's one of hte most blatant rip offs I have EVER seen.. look at the way she runs for example.. the loops , even level designs.. the demo literally felt like a sonic game.. People talk about copyright all the time, hey, why should devs get away with it? @@SwitchWatch
Got this with the humble bundle but I fucking HATED my WiiU so never played, can see me buying this for Switch. I tell ya, until you get a console that you can’t play as the gamepad is always dead even if you charged it earlier that week, you don’t understand how shit the WiiU was. So goad the Switch is always ready to be played.
am i the only one here who doesn't mind the long cutscenes? sure, they're really long, but to me that's really not a problem at all, because the story is captivating and the characters are all great.
I’m so sick of pixel art games - I grew up in the 80’s and 90’s and knew back then the games looked like garbage. I’m not against 2D games but seriously the Switch screen is 720p not 240p make art in games that fit with that resolution.
Hey Gang. Another great review. I played this one on my Wii U and absolutely loved it. Im playing Hyper Light Drifter right now and wow what a game. There is so much passion going into some of these pixel art style games and I honestly cant get enough of 'em. Happy Gaming!!!

Did you play it on PC or other consoles?
Wii U lol. As soon as Pikmin 3 gets ported I'll never have to turn that thing on again.
I grew up in 80’s and 90’s and I’m loving the pixel art. It’s a good break from recycled games such as COD , Battle Field, Destiny etc...
This game is absolutely amazing. I fell in love with it right away~ I can't wait for the sequel!
Glad you enjoyed it! The sequel is looking good so far!
I love this game! It has it's problems but it's so much more than just a Sonic clone. It's a great homage to Sega with some Sonic level design, Gunstar Heroes boss fights, and some Rocket Knight/ Mega Man X type mechanics.
Going to buy this game tomorrow for my Nintendo Switch and going to get the messenger
Was it any good
@@Treyson sup bruh. Hoping to buy and download this game on my Nintendo Switch
You missed the fact that each character has an exclusive level

I never play on PC so the Switch is a Godsend in terms of giving me Indies I've been missing out on

Thanks. This persuaded me to buy it!
Due to selling my Gaming PC awhile ago, I’ve been wanting this game for my Switch and finally finish it.
Will it get a physical release?
Haven't heard anything regarding that. Would be nice though
Limited run games just announced a physical release
you rockin the 2011 macbook pro too? nice

SwitchWatch I’ll definitely let u know 😁
SwitchWatch hey Jordan, I’m finally playing this game.. I’m liking it a lot.. it’s fun.. thanks again
There are 4. Torque he is available in Time Attack
Physical release would be cool, this looks like a fun game
No i am not tired of pixel art at all. Definitely great when done well
That would be nice, although they haven't done it yet despite the game being on many platforms before. Not sure how likely it is
You can pre-order the physical copy of the game right now on limited run games!
@@jeffashley8172 I'm guessing like me you're looking for reviews to see if it's worth it.
@@jedimaster12100 Yep exactly hahaha.
2D pixel art is my jam. I'm a gamer that grew up during the 8bit and 16bit era so I welcome these modern throwback indie games.

Cough* The artist for the character designs is a Diviant Art artist.
Thanks for the video. Definitely not my type of game, but I was about to buy it - so: thank you! I'll stay with the The Messenger and Into the Breach this month - and the next. ;)

Awesome comment here buddy. Thanks for takung the time to provide your thoughts 👍
Well, it IS much cheaper than making a complex 3d game.
You make a good point and I am not trying to debunk your opinion, but here's what I think.

If you're looking for a good 3d Sonic game (other than adventure 1&2) try Spark The Electric Jester 2.
I love this game so much I wrote a 24 page review on it for class lol
24 pages! Now that is passion! 👍😀
@@SwitchWatch thanks 😎👌 i plan on extending it and reaching at least like 50 pages someday 😂
Wow I'm getting this right now!
Hope you enjoy it :)

Is this co op?
I seriously wish we got PES19 and Two Point Hospital :-/ Thanks for the review! Would've ignored the game if u hadn't reviewed it.
I'm surprised Konami didn't put PES on the Switch. FIFA did alright and I'm sure many would have bought it.
ThrtFkr yes I do hope Konami planning to release PES in switch...

Excellent review guys, one of my friends highly recommend this game, on my recent Twitter post about eshop games 😎👍
It’s really good!
4.99$ on switch right now that’s a hell yeah for me :)
Just started this gem today 💎. Holy mackarel this feels better than 2d Sonic
Wow! Totally forgot about this. will have to get it at somepoint

Fair enough man. What about these on our site? Any you like? switchwatch.co.uk/five-games-with-limited-editions-coming-to-nintendo-switch/
Forgot to answer the question! I’m not sick of the pixel retro goodness. I always get more involved with snes styled games.
I definitely prefer 16-bit style to 8-Bit
SwitchWatch me too but I’ve been playing a lot of nes. It’s just that there is a lot I haven’t played on the system. I prefer 16-bit though.
I love the pixel art of the 16-bit and 32-bit era and feel as though they will forever have a place in gaming. They age a lot better than the majority of 3D games, thats for sure.

It's on sale I believe!
It's like Sonic meets Shantae, minus the speed.
It's an amazing throw back... just buy it now.
Personally I'm bored of the 4k 60 FPS bull and how many teraflops a system has. Bring more like this it's awesome
Yep, if you love games of the early-mid 90's, this is perfect.
I totally agree. 4K and all that mumbo jumbo don't guarantee whether or not a hand will simply be fun and enjoyable
Cool intro!
Thanks mate! Not happy with the sound though. Where I live the cicada's are going crazy atm and you can definitely hear them in the intro recording.
