    It is ridiculous how natural your drumming sounds with this. It's like you were playing together!

      What does chops mean

    • @lewiswood9286
      @lewiswood9286 5 ปีที่แล้ว +34

      @@guille7545 "chops" is when you have a musician that is primarily interested in using music to show-off their own talent, as opposed to musicians who lend their talents in service to the music.
      When you have a musician playing music that is too complex and complicated, to the point where it's not necessarily enjoyable to listen to, specifically BECAUSE it's complex and complicated.

    • @kameronpeterson3601
      @kameronpeterson3601 5 ปีที่แล้ว +63

      @@lewiswood9286 That's a little disingenuous. Chops specifically refer to the primary skill that an instrument requires. The embouchure of a saxophonist and the speed of the articulation in their hands or (in this case) a drummers coordination and accuracy of rhythm, for example. In the beginning the player's "chops" are weak, their embouchure isn't precise or they can't play fast passages accurately. Over time, people "build their chops." Get better. What Simon was saying is that if everyone was playing as physically complex and as strenuous to their chops as possible, it wouldn't be musical.
      Imagine instead of this drum groove, he was playing blazing fast drum fills constantly. No matter how accurate his rhythm was, it wouldn't've sounded good. Even though it would have been more impressive on a technical standpoint, it wouldn't have fit the tone of Jacob Collier's playing.

    • @kameronpeterson3601
      @kameronpeterson3601 5 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      @Scott Marten ""chops' is when you have a musician that is primarily interested in using music to show-off their own talent" That is completely false.

    What's impressive is that he's actually successfully integrating the drummer's natural habit that says: HIT EVERYTHING ON THE KIT ALL THE TIME and also keeping time and turning it into a groove. That's legit difficult - 90% of the time you just fuck up the song repeatedly because the voice told you to add another 8 drum taps into that one bar but it turns out you just threw your own rhythm off and now you're off-time. Well done this man.
