"Raven" wasn't the only singular word that sparked joy from the trailer. Hearing "hound" being said repeatedly made me unreasonably happy as an old fan of From Soft's old and often forgotten 360 exclusive game Chromehounds. Just like mechs are called Armored cores or Nexts in AC games, the mechs were called HOUNDs in Chromehounds.
I've never played an Armored Core game (Mainly because the universe has conspired to keep all knowledge of its existence a secret from me until now), so im extremely hyped to finally experience something I've clearly been missing out on.
Same my dad and I found out about it and he played armored core 2 so he was super hype about it so now we’re getting it on our Xbox and playing together
Honestly, like any fromsoft game it should still be difficult. Just expect fast paced gameplay, learn to dodge, and learn that AP is not the most important number.
Same here, this is pretty much the only game I'm hyped for this year. How have I never known that armoured core exists? It's clearly a triple A game based on its price but somehow I've just never seen it. I also find it interesting that it has both online PvP but also alot of customisability, hopefully the balance is ok.
So obviously I've been having a blast with the old AC games. If you've played them, which was your favourite? I think so far I've had the most fun in AC2...but that's because I went conquered the ENTIRE arena before even starting the first missions :P When I finally started playing properly, my AC was overpowered and I had infinite credits. That was really fun. Right now I'm replaying AC4 with a pure energy build..and then I'll try and finish AC5, which I started earlier, but didn't really enjoy... Anyway! Time to sleep. I hope you guys find this video useful for understanding Armored Core.
You can never go wrong with Armored core For answer. I actually played them all I even have them installed on my steam deck, but my favorite gameplay is for answer.
The pvp speed in AC4/FA was literally insane. Unlimited flying, second stage boosting, and putting more weight into one side vs the other. Basically turned it into planes dogfighting
@@asllen3310in terms of general mission and game structure the two games are actually really similar. Ace Combat tends to lean heavier on the story though whilst Armored Core leans heavier on the customisation.
the charge tackle/kick was a mechanic that was introduced in AC5. each leg group has their own tackle action. aesthetically, this is why the bipedal legs almost always included a reinforced plate on the right knee.
@@0uttaS1TE it's for two reasons, one is that it's used for the offensive kick, the other is that it deploys a physical shield when you equip the heavy weapons that you have to be stationary to use. Tanks don't have to go stationary to use heavy weapons, so they don't have a deployable shield, but they still have a "kick" animation. Similarly, the light reverse joint bipeds, IIRC, do a little hop kick with both feet, so they don't have a single side shield that they hit with during the animation, but along with that, they don't have a defense bonus when using heavy weapons, because they don't have the corresponding shield. There are always a ton of interconnecting elements when you're building the mech, and figuring out and fine tuning the theory-crafting is like, 90% of the game to some people.

"I don't build mechs so that I can do missions, I do missions so that I can afford new parts". A really good quote made by Vaati as a new AC player that explains what AC is.
If that isn't the most accurate and succinct summary of what it means to be truly passionate about the thing itself, about enjoying the doing and being more than any kind of actual accomplishment, then I don't know what is. "I don't DO so that I can BE. I AM, and a pleasant side effect of that, is BEING, which to most, looks like DOING."
For the boost turn 180, the lighter your ac the faster and further they turn. in armored core 4 you could attach weights to adjust your weight for Front/Back//Sides made it so you could take advantage of your weighted weapons and tailor your movement. For example: if you have a heavy grenade launcher on your right rear slot you will have issues boosting left due to the weight. If you try to turn boost left you will get less rotation. where as if you boost towards that heavy weight you can boost faster and turn boost further than a 180 turn
@@bloocifer dude Armored Core is the ultimate mech game. No joke, they were inspired by the Gundam franchise but wanted more customization. The mech battles are intense and memorable
Yeah, it looked like a normal light core boost turn to me. Granted, I played For Answer the most, so my idea of normal is somewhat extreme. (Sorry Normals) Telegraphed attacks from giant bosses was kinda the "thing" that Arms Forts were about, really. I'm seeing a lot of 4/FA in the design elements, but slowed down a little bit. Awesome. Maybe I'll actually be able to use laser blades at this speed.
@@DancerVeiled I see a lotta tech from ACVD, the kicks delivered by the light weight reverse joint was a thing everyone could do. Revs got the highest damage kicks and furthest leaps (The only way to get airborne was jumping off terrain), while tanks could fire ordinance weapons that required locking down in place while they moved. I’m rather excited!
Additionally, you can control the power of your quick turn and quick boost with just the button presses alone. If you know how to do a light quick boost and a max power quick boost, you know exactly what I mean. ;)
32:57 In certain missions you’re supposed to guard an item. If you go to where the item is you can betray the people who hired you and steal the item. While this counts as a mission failure you end up getting some of the best items in the game doing this. I hope this makes it into the game as I have always felt it adds to the realism.

Can we talk about how GOOD armored core's music is? I discovered this series with the reveal trailer and GODDAMN IT'S SUCH A GROOVE. If you can go listen to it.
Fun fact, the former main composer, Kota Hoshino, is self-taught. I also heard he can't read music notation but I need to double check that. Either way, it leads to these tracks that feel like he's playing by ear in a jam session, especially when you get to tracks like Thinker or Panther from 4, or The Game from Last Raven. It's so unconventional that they end up being jams in a way.
@Panda Pinecone It sounds similar to some of the stuff you'd hear in V and Verdict Day with the use of droning instruments. The older games don't really have that off the top of my head
Never been so excited for a game franchise I've never even touched and barely heard much of at all. You make me want to Wishlist and watch out for Week 1 reviews.
Something to note: Thread legs just like quad legs also allow you to move freely while firing off your back weapons such as grenade launchers. The difference is thread legs can also use the grenade launcher while on flight, whereas quad legs can only do it on land. Basically quad legs are faster than thread legs in terms of land movement, but with the downside of not being able to fire the grenade launchers mid-air. EDIT: Yes that boost-turn is indeed insane. It's almost like the turn rate is that of an anime-mech like gundam. I think they also took inspiration as to how anime mechs fight.
FS has used enemies that have telegraphed attacks in the past. Infact, the last enemy on part 1 of AC4 uses such attacks. First off, it will always lead with a single sniper round shooting raight at you as the match starts. In the cutscene, you can see him slam his weapon before taking aim. The second telegraphed attack is 1 where he takes a stance before firing several explosives around. This attack is easily dodged. The 3rd attack is what would later become assault armor in part 2 (ACFA)
I honestly am in tears at how much popularity AC series is getting now. I was the weird kid, i always talked about Armored Core while everyone else was talking about Final Fantasy, Battlefield, Call of Duty, Kingdom Hearts, etc. I have played these game since the first one back on the PS1. Ive played them into the dirt. It wasnt until DS3 i was able to draw a line between AC and DS that they have the same build system, minus the RPG stat leveler. The building of gear, weapons, spells(more weapons), was very similar. I cant tell you how excited i am for everyone to enjoy my addiction with me.
Man, I would love to be talking with you about Armored Core during our childhood. I learned about AC a little later during my life, actually at the beginning of my teenagehood. But I was already a fan of Xenogears and Gundam back in the days. Seems like we mecha-heads are not alone in this world, as we used to think so

A tip for you and the other that are new to the AC games, concentrate on the side missions and arena, if there is one, to build exp, money and the occasional free ac part.

The speeds you were able to achieve in armored core 4/for answer were insane, i had ac's that went so fast they glitched out and died by hitting buildings, then they had the glitch were you can boost teleport great for sword duels online, the 180 boost turn was crucial for those duels and was fast as ever because if you weren't quick enough you'd get a energy sword in the back.

From Software does an amazing job of being technically primitive but artistically profound. Elden Ring doesn't theoretically look that great when you break it down against other modern titles, but you don't notice it because their art direction and artists are fantastic. Kinda like how WoW launched alongside (slightly after) EQ2, which are like 2 graphical generations apart but used art and styling to win out while also working across a greater range of hardware. Should run, look, and play great in true From Software fashion.
A point of pride for me in the original AC was always being able to hold my own, with a non-rebel pilot against friends who always intentionally allowed that to happen to their own, for the gameplay advantages. I remember lugging a tv and playstation over to a friends house simply so we could have our own screens. If you want to talk about how far the series has come. This one aspect exemplifies it for me, even if it is really about hardware and not the game per se. The last AC game I played was 3. By then I was actually using my pointer and middle finger to manipulate the face buttons (ring and pinky for shoulder buttons, thumb switching between stick and face buttons, controller resting on my lap), for this one game. So it is not like I got bored of the series. I literally started using a novel, unorthodox and difficult grip just so I could play it better. I only stopped because the PS2 was the last home console I bought before I switched to PC gaming and I never cared a lot about emulation of anything newer than PSX stuff (until last year that is, a Steam Deck opens up some wonderful doors for emulation). So I simply haven't had the ability to play the newer ones. That VI is getting released for PC is one of the most exciting bits of video game news in 20 years, for me at least. Armored Core was such a good game I literally would literally walk to a friends house carrying a tv, playstation and whatnot just to play it when I was a teenager. Missing out on the later games has always annoyed me due to how much I loved the earlier ones. The sheer level of customization, which really was crazy at the time of the original, made for some great discussions with other people too. This excitement is severely tempered by From Software's reputation for PC ports though. (if you are unaware, it isn't the best) I don't expect anything to ever live up to an expectation based on memories like I just related. But I truly hope that VI will be able to stoke that still burning fire a bit. A fun new Armored Core game to play, that is all I want and is something I never thought I would ever see on PC. (edit: I really hope it has good customization for input. I have a good HOTAS and I really want to try using it for this game)
Ditto! I spent many a night with back to back consoles and TVs facing off with my bros. It was great to not have the split screen be giving away our positions. Good times.

Outstanding video. I'm an old school Armored Core fan and im beyond hyped for this game. Great to finally see this series return and have the budget to match its ambitions. Also love that it might finally get the mainstream attention it deserves and thus the online lobbies won't be barren wastelands.
I was highly skeptical for quite awhile, I'm still trying to remain skeptical because of all the disappointments I've had in the last decade. Even with all this skepticism, I'm thinking this might end up being another case of Devil May Cry 5. And by that I mean, a sequel made a decade after the last one, that is extremely well made, and directly made as a love letter to previous fans. I'm looking forward to this game so much.
Playing Armored Core is the kind of experience that if you do as much as blink, you lose the battle. The high level missions are that insane. I'll always remember Otsdarva in FA, you had to line up with him with the boosters, which means you basically had to fine tune your mech to be able to keep up with his constant side-boosting or he'd just draw circles around you while peppering your ass with ordnance. What a game.
I have never played this series(And maybe never cause Im just not into mechs unless its like titanfall) but I love that from the sounds of it Fromsoft keeping everything from the old armored games like the dizzying aspect and (like you said) the so fast you miss it if you blink design of the gameplay. It's really nice to see a developer not cater too much to players that are new to the series like slow it down so they have an easier understanding.
White Glint also comes to mind, when Otsdarva's NEXT malfunctions during their fight and you were an "observer". She was literally a white glint to me in that fight.
I remember in AC4 i made a front heavy, super-light mech with double moonblades, it was ridiculously fast at closing in the gap but so fragile. The customization in these games is insane
Its really rare that a new game coming out gets me excited anymore, but its been almost 10 years since the last Armored Core game. Many fans figured they would eventually release an Armored Core 6, and I get the feeling its going to be well worth the wait.
To any AC newbies reading, first of all, welcome, glad to see you are excited for Fires of Rubicon because it is shaping up to be a real treat for newcomers and veterans alike, and secondly, don't be afraid to experiment. Vaati is right saying that customisation is both one of the most intimidating aspects to learn while also being one of the most fun once you've begun to get the hang of it. Thankfully, you get access to a test arena where you can pit your latest creation against various types of enemies including a test AC free of charge and consequence. This is good for getting a feel for how the latest iteration of your AC handles without having to worry mucking up a mission and loosing money. You'll most likely end up making multiple builds for different types of missions so make plenty of use of the test arena.
I've never played an AC game but that's what's got me excited is the amount of customization, and this one seems to be the highest by far, as expected for a modern fromsoft game. I can see a lot of replayability in this customization. The weapons look so freaking cool.
I would also like to add, there are no specific stat requirements for weapons, it's absolutely necessary to swap weapons out depending on your mission, there's always a correct tool for the job.
It's absurd that you made such high quality video in what, just 1 day?! For me it's quite impressive. Never played an AC game but the series got my interest with the reveal of this new game, especially after watching this video. Thank you for your work

@@Dr_Salt His favorite dev company is releasing a new game in an established series, so he got interested and played them all. Or do some of you just want him to make souls content till the end of time?
I'm extremely excited for the world design in this game. I played most of the classics, and the worlds were huge for games even back then, and with how good they are at it now, and how well done elden ring was done, I think they will genuinely create a masterpiece of an environment, I think this game is going to be unbelievably stunning to play through.
I'm really impressed you've actually gone through and played a good number of the games, and have even brought up a very important piece of movement tech in the older titles in the form of boost hopping. One of the big things about this technique is that it not only is the most efficient method of movement in all of these older titles, that moment you're in the air with your boosters deactivated is the perfect opportunity to begin strafing in different directions to dodge enemy fire, making it not only a powerful mobility but also evasion tactic, invaluable in most of the games especially when dueling enemy ACs. I was initially in disagreement on the speed of the quickturn in 6's trailer being faster than in 4 or FA, but upon rewatching, it does seem to be a few frames faster, nothing noticeable but when you consider this game is meant to be more in line with 3 and 5's movement, having a quickturn like that is huge. I really hope the lockon isn't a souls-style lockon, I'm not sure if the FCS part would survive such a transition, which would mean less customization and taking a less active role in the combat by having the game maintain lock for you; keeping enemies in lock and constantly darting your eyes from the battle to your radar to keep track of enemy NEXTs is part of what made 4 and FAs combat so exhilirating and engaging in my opinion, so I really hope this doesn't end up being the case. Regarding the concept of a stagger system in AC, stability has always been present in the series, it determines how much hitstun you take and what attacks can even stun you in the first place. AC5 already had a system similar to the one they mention in the interview, wherein getting hit repeatedly would incur stun and cause your AC to receive additional damage. A bigger emphasis on this system could indeed make fights a bit more dynamic and could incentivize the usage of melee weapons more, which I consider a solid idea. I do hope that shoulder mounted/extensions and inside parts come back, but I don't believe we've seen any ACs with these parts yet so I don't believe it will be returning. Likewise, aside from the EMP shockwave one core we've seen does, I hope there are more varied and interesting core gimmicks this time including the return of Overboost, I saw a torso part that looks like the old GAEA Exceed Orbit core, but I don't foresee EO returning, though maybe something similar will be present. Hearing you go from finding the garage intimidating to being the main drive for continuing to play was fascinating and welcoming to hear, nice to see you've successfully been indoctrinated into the Raven's Nest, Vaati.
Just something to add on to AC4's movement in particular. Free flight isn't the only thing brand new to the game. They gave boosting inertia properties. So you're able to shoot the weight of your AC in multiple directions, causing you to gain incredible amounts of speed via a technique a.k.a "Chain boosting". AC6 looks like we'll get something close to that, according to the footage of the side boosting button making a come back, so chain boosting might be something worth learning to gain the upperhand in piloting your AC if we are given a bigger learning curve to work with. It's also worth noting that using it this technique constantly will drain your boost gauge at a dramatic rate if you don't pay attention. It was an everyday thing seeing fellow Lynx alike misjudge how many chains they can pull off only to plummet down to the ground due to spending all their energy, which in the AC4 world could mean being punished severely, or outright death. Back in the day, it was common practice in pvp lobbies to chip away at opponents with haphazard chain boosting to throw off the opponents FCS target aqqusition systems (Still is to my knowledge), though with future updates and patch, it became more of a gimmick for Light weight's/Quad's/Chicken legs to take full advantage of. Another example of using/setting up chain boosting is purging your weapon systems to dramatically increase AC energy performance to surprise your opponents, if they are conditioned by your normal speed (Yes, even if you run out of ammo on weapons, either energy or physical, they still draw and encumber your AC's energy/weight passively, so purging allows you to shed that dead weight and make some very surprising plays if your opponent isn't ready for it.) Speed is life fellow Ravens.
Was that the armored Core where they had booster rockets on their leg parts and arm parts? I really didn't get to play 4 or 5. Watching videos I didn't understand why that was needed. Those systems didn't have good physics anyways. I know on PS3 they tried with LittleBigPlanet
Your clip for showing older tank legs was from Armored Core 4, not 3 just to let you know. Also some quick trivia for the kick move. It was originally introduced in Armored Core V and was actually a very useful melee option for mechs that didn't have any melee weapons equipped onto them. To perform it, you had to hold down the quick-boost button and your mech would perform a kick at the end of its quick-boost. Damage was based on mech weight and how fast you are moving when performing the kick, which means performing it out of an over-boost did much more damage than just performing it out of a regular boost. Tank legs could one-shot most other ACs with this kick due to how heavy they were, lol.
5 had some good ideas on a few things, the kick being one of them. Then it had some terrible ideas, like the always online model. Here's hoping 6 takes the best ideas and ditches the rest.
@@randalthevandal4170 I recall the shop also being locked to online play, a fact I learnt the hard way one day. Yes, you can technically play the game, but with several features, including the games main progression method, locked behind online, I feel like that doesn't really count, as eventually you'd get locked out by the lack of customization. Plus, I'd rather just be able to pick to fight the big boss, please and thanks
I hope this game has some "realistic battlefields". I love the missions where you're in a warzone full of non mech war vehicles that makes you feel like a real warmachine. By the look, AC 6 will have a lot of cyber/industrial allmost alien like buildings and enemies
A stagger like system has always been part of series, if you fall from very high without breaking your fall by boosting your ac takes a hard fall and takes longer to recover and move again, similarly if you are hit by some of the heavier weapons your ac "recoils" or "flinches" and depending on the weapon you can kinda stun lock enemies or get stun locked yourself. But this seems to be an evolution of that and closer to how it worked on sekiro with it being an actual bar/gauge or whatever and something you can more easily exploit
Yeah, one of the weak points of light AC has always been that once they take a hit from something that staggers them they may as well already be dead. It's why medium AC are king, having no real advantage or weakness against the other weight classes. Mediums with a rifle and a battle rifle were the counter to pretty much everything except an ultra-light AC with a sniper rifle or an ultra-heavy with an far too many cannons and missiles in ACVD to be honest.
@@Arukorstza ACVD being so heavily focused on online resulted in some weird metas, in games that kinda focused on not necessarily catering to that. I forget all the intricacies mind you, but the medium-heavy RJ with like, energy shotguns or SMGs or something, being the absolute king of close to medium range combat killed that game for me. I've always been a blader (and yes, I am eating HEALTHY with AC6, it seems) so my experience pretty much entirely hinges on stagger thresholds, speed, dodging, and my ability to do what I do. ACV and VD especially, that just wasn't a thing. The same targeting issues I ran into in 4 and 4A were multiplied by a somewhat unwieldy movement system and inability to really modify height properly, on top of just... not being the highest burst damage around, despite having the most drawbacks. Couple that with the sniper ultra-lights you aluded to, or the big ol beefy bois rocking enough firepower to actively counter those medium-heavy RJs, and it wasn't much fun. Light has always been in a weird spot of requiring you know what "small arms fire" you're likely to come in contact with and have juuust enough stability to shrug that off, while dodging anything bigger like missile spam or cannons, but it's been fun to me. If you don't match those requirements it's gonna be hell, though.

Never played an Armored Core entry before, but From Soft earned my trust ever since I first dug into Demons Souls all those years ago..I’ll be checking this game out day one for sure!
Think of Armored Core like Gran Turismo... with fighting robots. And all the customizability that entails. And you are an unnamed grunt doing missions for ruthless corporations fighting and backstabbing each other. It's a franchise that is much older than the Souls games.
Thank you, Vaati, for representing our beloved series in such a well-thought-out way. This was an excellent video. Like you, my favorite part of AC "lore" is when the AC pilots banter back and forth, but particularly when you fight well or have a very strong build, and the enemy you face comments on it. I've always loved that sense of power scaling in games, where your performance impresses the locals. lmao I hope we get to see White Glint.
I absolutely love the banter between the pilots in these games! A few line's that have stuck with me for over a decade now: "You're a fine warrior... Call me sentimental, but I wish we had met under different circumstances." - Berlioz from Armored Core 4 "There is no place for me other than the battlefield. To live as I please, and die a senseless death. That is who I am. Not a mere man of flesh. War is part of my existence." - J from Armored Core 5: Verdict Day
For newcomers and veterans who have nor played any of the games in a while: If you want to get / remember what this series is about (regarding narrative topics, setting, look and feel and style), I recommend watching "The Armored Core series - A Newcomer's Journey" from the Writing for games channel.
I appreciate Vaati trying to bring new people to the series, ive been playing since AC2 and i love these games. I honestly didn't believe id see another Armored core game in my lifetime. I hope everyone enjoys it.
Im sure itll get a good amount of new players but we really need more news for elden eings since a big bulk of fromsoft fans are primarily souls players.
Superbly put together video, it’s not only super insightful but gives you an idea about what AC6 is going to be like, with the trailer analysed by a hardcore fan presented in a concise and friendly Manner with people unfamiliar to the franchise in mind, and you go over some of the key game mechanics and how you thinks they’re going to work based on observations from the trailer and things the developers have said in interviews. My recommended has been non stop “ArMoReD cOrE tRaIleR ReAcTiOn!!!??!?!?!!!😮” and it’s just two guys going “Yooooo, man, this looks cool guys” so super refreshing to see someone who cares actually take the time and effort to create an interesting informative and useful video, With context from past games explained in a really easy to digest and understand manner, which when I’ve tried to look for it before I haven’t been able to find.
@@bootysalad The man's played 7 AC games and breaks down the trailer frame-by-frame, with descriptions relating back to previous titles and quotes from the director to back up his research, but he's 'not hardcore'? Are you 12?
Some of the older games (like 4 and for answer) also had stability as a mechanic, where your AC could get off-balance by the impact of heavy weapons. This would cause you to sometimes spin out of control or instantly lose lock-on. Same for firing heavy weapons without changing your AC's balance using counterweights if your AC was off-center,you could destabilize yourself just by firing heavy shoulder weapons.
@@involuntaryanalysis Yeah, it had a minor impact on that stuff too. Though, if I remember correctly, it was more that you got penalties to your speed if you were improperly balanced and got your actual stats if you balanced the AC.
I’ve never played an AC game so this will be my first step into the universe and considering FromSofts track record I’m unbelievably excited. Another great video Vaati and I’m excited to see more video’s revolving around this new AC in the future!
The more I see of the old Armored Core games the more mad I am at my younger self for missing out on them. They look exactly like the type of games I would have loved being a huge fan of mecha anime series particularly Gundam of course.
Just played AC1 for the first time earlier this year (beat it only a couple of weeks before AC6 was announced!), And I have to say that it's still a blast to this day. If PS1 graphics don't inherently turn you off, I'd highly recommend giving it a go
For Answer was my favourite game of the generation. DEFINITELY the best "gundam" game I ever played. But, the story was absolutely and utterly incomprehensible to me. It is bad translations all over. I still loved every minute.
I also recommend that you watch the Writing for Games video: The Armored Core series - A Newcomer's Journey. That and Josh Strife Plays videos about AC.
The idea of a stagger system into a mech fighting game reminds me of one of my favorite games of all time, Custom Robo Battle Revolution, which had so many customization options that created very unique playstyles. I’ve been wanting a sequel to that game since I was a kid, and while Armored Core isn’t exactly that, it will definitely still scratch that same itch.
I some news or something: The stagger system existed since Armored Core 4, it is caused due to taking either too much build up damage in a short time or _getting shot by a nu-_ grenade canon levels of damage, it seems to be brought back but who knows
You and me both. I played that game absolutely to death as a kid, and looking at what Vaati is describing I'm hyped to have *some kind* of analogue for that feeling of customizing my mech and making it my own.
for those who remember and fought Valkyrie in the very first armored Core game. yeah. getting stun locked by that rapid firing slug gun is a pain. and the mechanic is not new in AC. IMO, From Soft refined it from a mini mechanic that relies on weapon stagger/stun ability VS Leg/overall Unit Stability value to something close to FF7R's pressure gauge.
@@MegaOS_Ver_NEET Not exactly a bad idea TBH, I mean just look at Elden Ring and Sekiro, they already had the base in the Mini-Mechanic and all they're doing is taking what they've learned from Sekiro and Elden Ring to refine it into something potentially very special!

Excellence again Vaati. Even changing course to a new series, you put in the WORK, and it shows. Caught a ton of stuff even an AC vet like myself didn't! Keep it up! Can't wait to see more, especially come August!
The combination of the best of each games movements quick thrusts of 4, a speed between 3&5, and being more grounded. While also having more options for melee has me nostalgic and ready for "blades only" multiplayer lobbys of AC4/FA to return in AC6
I have always loved mechs but I have such specific taste in them that I have a hard time getting into a lot games about them, but this might just hit the soft spot, fast reactive movement but you can still feel every ton of steel of your mech shifting around, I pray the sound desing is good and the weapons feel weighty and I’m gonna have a field trip with this
I love mech types like Titanfall where they incorporate Western and Eastern ideology of what a mech is. Armored and bulky while also maintaining speed and movement. AC seems to strike that feel too since it'll be my first entry into the series.
Everything you just said is what FromSoftware is known for, and why the combat sets them apart from other game developers. There's a reason so many studios have been trying to imitate their games for years, yet no one gets it right. The only thing I'm worried about is performance. Their games never really run very well, no matter what system they run on. I'm hoping with how well Elden Ring did, they've hired plenty of talented devs that can properly optimize their games.
I also recommend that you watch the Writing for Games video: The Armored Core series - A Newcomer's Journey. That and Josh Strife Plays videos about AC.
“Let’s see how far they can fly…on borrowed wings.” Is just such a badass line to me. Idk if it’s referencing us and our character, but if it is it’s in keeping with the idea of being tarnished or the curse of the undead like the previous souls games. Since we’re owned by some company and have a “handler” maybe they have their thumb on a kill switch if we don’t do as we’re told, putting us quite literally “on borrowed time.”Maybe that’s what it means to be a Raven, we’re given “borrowed wings” in exchange for whatever we can get for our handler.
I think either our enemies have tech stolen from this corporate empire, or we are going to break away and go rogue, and they hunt us down. Likely both. We hunt rogue units, and then we get hunted.
I love the music especially from the very first cinematic trailer. It gives me a very dark vibe almost a hopeless resolve. I don’t know how to explain it but I love it.
The AC series is so underrated. A lot of people will visit the old games after playing the new one I think, even if the new one is a bit different. Hopefully not too different though.
The thing that makes me most excited in all this is that one kick move that AC does. There's a lot of other cool new moves about but that one in particular is A: 100% a player controlled AC, which means it's something we'll be able to use and B: attached to a part that isn't even a weapon. Having unique moves associated with parts other than weapons has insane implications for customisation. I can't wait to build my kung-fu mecha that punches and kicks everything to death.
this was a very fun mechanic introduced in AC5. i supposed the damage this action could dish out was based on your leg type, total weight, and boost thrust. in AC5, the active frames were really short.
@@enterTantalos Oh yeah, I remember that now you mentioned it, but this looks much more in depth. From what I remember in AC5 you just kind of rammed into things rather than doing a cool animation. But I do remember building a very heavy 2-leg AC and oneshotting basic enemies with that technique.
its probably not as in depth as all that. Its probably the melee component of the assault charge move. I'm sure youll get spike drivers and energy sabers, but hoping for a full melee build with nothing but punches and kicks is probably wishful thinking.
@@christopherlyndsay8611 it's holding the controller backwards not upside down, so your thumbs are on the shoulder buttons and the rest of your fingers are on the analogs, face buttons and D-pad all at once. It's ridiculous
In all seriousness though I actually did do a sort of claw grip where my middle fingers were on the triggers and my index on bumpers and also specifically bought a controller with back pedals
I love how Vaati already releases a gameplay guide on ACVI, way earlier than before the game even releases. It really shows you how much Vaati loves this new re-emerging series, and as a veteran Armored Core fan, I really appreciate it a lot.
"It really shows you how much Vaati loves this new re-emerging series" - well, you're not wrong because he's clearly come to love it, but Vaati didn't know crap about AC before this. He played all these games in preparation for this one's release.
"how much he loves" That's a reach. Obviously, AC6 is going to be big, there's a lot of revenue to be made on videos covering it, not jumping on the bandwagon would be asinine.
The music in this trailer hit me with so much nostalgia, I don't even know how to describe it. I haven't played too many of the AC games ( only 4, 4A, and 5), but I am so excited that this series is coming back. I hope more people are able to try it out and come to love it as I did (and probably will) when the game launches.
I think the reason a lot of AC fans care soo much about about the game being compared to the souls series is because it sometimes feels like dark souls kinda left other from soft games in it's shadow especially with armoured core and some just want it to be appreciated on its own merit and as its own game and not just "robo souls". Obviously some are far more vocal about it than others but overall it feels people just wanna keep AC and souls as seperate as possible. I do think the things you mentioned in this video could be amazing additions and I'm beyond excited for this game!
@@SpicyStinkyTOFU yeah, I'm worried about the gameplay implications of a souls style lockon system. If we can just lockon to enemies like it's Souls, then what will our fcs be for? Will we even have an fcs? If we can just lock on to enemies, then what about free aim weapons like rockets that were strong but had to be manually aimed? I am so excited for a new armored core game. But at the same time I'm terribly anxious that it will have lost it's identity in it's 10 year absence and become armored souls.
Still not an excuse, do not take someone out of context or misrepresent their comments ever. Making a straw man or throwing insults just isnt okay. He never said "robo souls" and the reaction he got was reprehensible, silly and embarrassing. Are AC fans so insecure they pop off at the mere mention of the highly likely fact the new game would incorporate aspects of the companies current 10 year legacy? Really? Because any level headed person would draw the same conclusion, and it looks like he was right too. Makes AC fans look toxic and childish seeing how awful they were over such a benign comment on possible new design or mechanics.
Because the games are fantastic, just hard to approach, which from the dev's comments in the IGN interview may be fixed in 6 through both better controls and a better lead in to the garage.
People never knew that armored cores system is where the souls style evolved from. Customizable, bar dependant, high difficulty, obscure lore, nameless primary character. It was all in armored core. I played this as a boy❤
This is a great video. Thank you for making it. I loved how you used old music from previous Armored Core games. Especially AC 4 and For Answer. I have such huge nostalgia for those games.
@@neoginseng436 it’s from Legend of Zelda ocarina of time - but I’m sure her name was Navi because of Navigate (she’s the fairy that guides you in the game)
Armored Core 2 had a turning quick boost side booster (90 degree turn), but it was a hidden part found inside a train in a mission. There's always been quick turn boosting, not just in AC4.
To me as an old school AC fan one of the most important things is the soundtrack. The OSTs of the PSX and Ps2 era armored core games shaped my music taste to what it is today and just hearing some of them in the background of this video hit me with a wave of nostalgia. That being said, there is not a doubt in my mind that the AC6 soundtrack will absolutely shred.
@VaatiVidya quick-turning has been in the game in some form for the last few series. In the most recent game, Armored Core Verdict Day, it can be achieved by turning your boosters off with momentum while turning and making contact with the ground, or holding the stick in one direction when jumping off of terrain. It can be very fast and you can even do a 360 with the right build, but the terrain can be pretty limiting.
In AC4 this was called a drift turn because the net code couldn't process it so you'd slowly drift to one side and then 'warp' to a new location as the network updated. It was a fundamental part of PVP and there's still footage of drift turns online.
Leg type also controlled your blade attack patterns for melee mechs. The quad leg in particular made it easy to get 1 hit kills if you had 2 moonlights. However it also telegraphed your attack about 500m before it hit.
This video is insane🤯So much detail and love. I ve only played one of the game in the series, I believe it's 3 and have always want to return to this title.
11:30 The footage here is from Armored Core 4, not Armored Core 3. My personal preferences for mechs include being able to mount the biggest guns on them, and thus the tank treads were my favorite legs due to having the highest weight limits and armor. And now they look to be even more viable with the improved speed and handling. Also the part discussing lock-on is interesting, because there was an Italian interview about the game released yesterday that actually had Yamamura talk about the lock-on mechanics, mentioning how in this game aiming is less important than positioning and watching your enemy's movement, and that there'll be new mechanics to support that. They also discussed the scanning, where you can also use it to find loot containers that have weapons and parts, which we haven't had in a while since 3rd Gen.
I too am excited about seeing tank legs getting some unique maneuverability options to them. I didn't use them often, but sometimes you just needed the raw damage and durability. (hello tunnel fighting!) Making them more viable in open terrain sounds marvelous.
Man what a banger of a video. I'm so hyped. I haven't played an Armored Core game since the PS1 like 20+ years ago, I feel like crying from nostalgia. I'm so ready!
good point about the jump pads, my thought is if it's anything like the pre IV games, where vertical flight is possible but consumes a lot of energy, then this seems like a good way of preventing someone from being soft locked which was a big problem in earlier titles. Or it could be a matter of pacing or just directing the player so you don't spend 40 minutes on every mission just scaling random walls
I liked what you were saying about the voice prompts for certain dodges / perilous attacks. What I didn't hear you mention, (apologies if you did) was that your head slot choice in the original games also determined what voice, and how intricate an AI you got. I think it's reasonable to say that your head option in 6 may determine how "helpful" the AI is in your play. For instance you may be able to select a head that weighs more or takes more energy that also gives you more hints and gameplay help, including minimap, radar, enemy information, honestly everything HUD related, and potentially warn you of particular dangers. I'm so hyped for this game.
even though better to have good information, I admire those awful AI intercom which gives me nostalgia of old AC series. "system engage"(システム キドウ in Japanese) hits so hard
I do strongly recommend playing some of the previous AC entries if you haven't. Some are better than others, but they're all pretty great if you like mecha games with a ton of customization
Thank you for this detailed analysis, I was a bit sceptical of whether Armoured Core would be a game I would like to play based on the limited information we had. But if it's anything like how you theorised then it's sure to be a winner in my book.
man so nostalgic i thought id never see another armored core game made again and now we have this those multiplayer game lobbies use to go crazy so many creative people with the way they build their mechs and color them and even the logo that community was one of a kind
I also recommend that you watch the Writing for Games video: The Armored Core series - A Newcomer's Journey. That and Josh Strife Plays videos about AC.
I appreciate a fellow fan of the Armored Core series. I played the original and never was able to play any of the others, but it truly made its mark and set a standard unmatched for mech games. There needs to be more games like this - heavy focus on customisation, and approach/strategy. Great missions, and fun mysterious storylines.
In AC4 treads are useful for bosses so you can pile on so much armor they can't possibly deal any meaningful damage, and naval missions where you have infinite ground boost anyway. Aside from that the lack of mobility will hurt a lot since you're really not supposed to stop and fight every enemy. The little bits of damage will add up over time, putting tank builds on a guaranteed death timer
My ac build in 5v was a high defense medium bipedal, twin minigun with the arms that can transform into swords, in group play i was the suppressive fire. What worked for me was i was able to maintain superboost for as long as i wanted since it was built for efficiency, so circling everyone was a easy task
The lore is fairly spartan and you can't go down little rabbit holes like you can with item descriptions in Souls games. There's also a lot of untranslated material.
This will be my first armoured core game but I'm already so hyped for this. I already know I'm going to go a bit crazy with crafting some insane mechs, my brain is already thinking of some fun possibilities that I just hope that the game will give me the ability to pull off
AC has always had customising your mechs as one of the central pillars of the experience, its unlikely that fromsoft will skimp out on customising now.
The sideboosting is an extension in armored core 3 and the overboosting had been a feeature from their core on that same gen. But the fixed lock on in the game is a welcome for that series so you can focus on other resources.
I haven't played armored core before, but I have played a few mech games, and the customization excites me so much. The possibility of legs that change your mobility from the ground up (if tread 'legs' let you use much heavier parts in exchange for flight it would be super cool, like being an ultraheavy tank), all the different back parts(missile silo, boost thing, what looks like a cannon/mortar), all the different weapons and ammo you see flying around, with bullets, lasers, missiles that split into smaller missiles, etc.
Treads were always the superheavy weight option in the older titles. They looked a little stupid in AC4 since you were always flying or gliding around in that one, but in the others it was basically trading broad mobility for being able to armor up and carry the absolute biggest weapons.
@@kronosx7 I've been playing Daemon X Machina. It's a mech game with boss battles in it. You can pick up blueprint from defeated bosses that will unlock boss weapons and parts. Though it is unlikely I thought it would be a neat addition. :P

While it is from a completely different dev, it reminded me of Phantom Crash, where the mechs are collectively called Scoobies, the cuter 'hounds!'

The universe somehow manages to keep a ton of mech based IP hidden from me as well. Glad it finally relented recently.
Similarly, the light reverse joint bipeds, IIRC, do a little hop kick with both feet, so they don't have a single side shield that they hit with during the animation, but along with that, they don't have a defense bonus when using heavy weapons, because they don't have the corresponding shield.

I really dig the track they've used for the AC6 trailers. Are the soundtracks for previous games similar?
Fun fact, the former main composer, Kota Hoshino, is self-taught. I also heard he can't read music notation but I need to double check that. Either way, it leads to these tracks that feel like he's playing by ear in a jam session, especially when you get to tracks like Thinker or Panther from 4, or The Game from Last Raven. It's so unconventional that they end up being jams in a way.
@Panda Pinecone It sounds similar to some of the stuff you'd hear in V and Verdict Day with the use of droning instruments. The older games don't really have that off the top of my head

@@rainwolfj Elden Ring Performance on consoles isn’t great at all.
(if you are unaware, it isn't the best)
I don't expect anything to ever live up to an expectation based on memories like I just related.

Damn, so now I'll have to learn how not to blink when playing?

This is a really informative video, addresses pretty much everything I wanted to know, as a souls veteran who has never played armored core before
To any AC newbies reading, first of all, welcome, glad to see you are excited for Fires of Rubicon because it is shaping up to be a real treat for newcomers and veterans alike, and secondly, don't be afraid to experiment.
Welcome fresh meat, I mean new Ravens!
I would also like to add, there are no specific stat requirements for weapons, it's absolutely necessary to swap weapons out depending on your mission, there's always a correct tool for the job.
It's absurd that you made such high quality video in what, just 1 day?! For me it's quite impressive.

Will you be making an appearance in this new game?
I remember 9ball giving me headaches when I played this on the PS1

Red rum slugfest anyone?
Yeah, one of the weak points of light AC has always been that once they take a hit from something that staggers them they may as well already be dead. It's why medium AC are king, having no real advantage or weakness against the other weight classes. Mediums with a rifle and a battle rifle were the counter to pretty much everything except an ultra-light AC with a sniper rifle or an ultra-heavy with an far too many cannons and missiles in ACVD to be honest.
@@Arukorstza medium is premium
@@valkyrie16 PAAIIIN

It could also be used to improve your speed.
You’re gonna have a blast
Welcome to the franchise and the community!
The more I see of the old Armored Core games the more mad I am at my younger self for missing out on them. They look exactly like the type of games I would have loved being a huge fan of mecha anime series particularly Gundam of course.
go play them. the PSP games are easy to emulate, im doing it right now!

I know man it’s crazy how far we’ve come now. This series went from b level to AAA
Welcome back to the franchise!
Absolutely incredible assessment. Thank you for putting in the WORK Vaati and for sharing this.
I some news or something:
The stagger system existed since Armored Core 4, it is caused due to taking either too much build up damage in a short time or _getting shot by a nu-_ grenade canon levels of damage, it seems to be brought back but who knows

Yeah, its is going to be great for veterans and newcomees alike!
It's from software. If they dissapoint ill donate my my kidney to a random person.

@@zues287 They run well on Console. Their PC ports have indeed always had issues.
They talk in trailer about using someone else's callsign. Pretty sure the name "Raven" is itself the wings we've borrowed.
I think either our enemies have tech stolen from this corporate empire, or we are going to break away and go rogue, and they hunt us down. Likely both. We hunt rogue units, and then we get hunted.
I loved it as well. It's always so good when trailers have a few memorable lines that just get stuck forever. Elden Ring had several of these too.
@@CheshireSwift true, that's a good point

This isn’t new…
@@TheSaladin777 not new, but hopefully revised!
its probably not as in depth as all that. Its probably the melee component of the assault charge move. I'm sure youll get spike drivers and energy sabers, but hoping for a full melee build with nothing but punches and kicks is probably wishful thinking.
There is only so few things I know about this series but the holding the controller surface side down for optimal control is definitely one of them.
Ah yes, the AC grip.
Lmao that’s hilarious, how does that even work
@@christopherlyndsay8611 it's holding the controller backwards not upside down, so your thumbs are on the shoulder buttons and the rest of your fingers are on the analogs, face buttons and D-pad all at once. It's ridiculous
No one uses this. Its a meme
I am here vefore the one million views!
@@Dracobyte Well, sit tight buddy. Cuz it's about to reach millions views when we hit August on calendar
"It really shows you how much Vaati loves this new re-emerging series" - well, you're not wrong because he's clearly come to love it, but Vaati didn't know crap about AC before this. He played all these games in preparation for this one's release.
More like clickbait
"how much he loves"
That's a reach.
I don't want the lock-on system like souls, i want them stay themselves
@@SpicyStinkyTOFU yeah, I'm worried about the gameplay implications of a souls style lockon system.
If we can just lockon to enemies like it's Souls, then what will our fcs be for? Will we even have an fcs?
If we can just lock on to enemies, then what about free aim weapons like rockets that were strong but had to be manually aimed?
I am so excited for a new armored core game. But at the same time I'm terribly anxious that it will have lost it's identity in it's 10 year absence and become armored souls.
@@alistershade8923 The lockon is likely just camera based, not weapon based.
@@SpicyStinkyTOFU I always preferred the old version that required you to work on keeping enemies in your sights rather than a hard lock.
For someone like me that never played Armored Core, this looks phenomenal.
Because the games are fantastic, just hard to approach, which from the dev's comments in the IGN interview may be fixed in 6 through both better controls and a better lead in to the garage.
New fresh meat for the PVP!

Armored Core 2 had a turning quick boost side booster (90 degree turn), but it was a hidden part found inside a train in a mission. There's always been quick turn boosting, not just in AC4.
Yes
I remember these goobers in AC3 as well. But it's been like 18 years since I played that, so I'm not entirely sure.
Ac 2 had the best ost but now it just generic
@VaatiVidya quick-turning has been in the game in some form for the last few series. In the most recent game, Armored Core Verdict Day, it can be achieved by turning your boosters off with momentum while turning and making contact with the ground, or holding the stick in one direction when jumping off of terrain. It can be very fast and you can even do a 360 with the right build, but the terrain can be pretty limiting.
to be fair, most new players never truly learn how to utilize the chain boost mechanic. It can be nauseating to new players as vaati says.
this reminds me about the tournament for AC where the light weight AC zooming around like a mosquito turning so fast
@@lainvohndyrec962 Learning how to stay in the pocket with QB chain was a pain to learn but so satisfying.
In AC4 this was called a drift turn because the net code couldn't process it so you'd slowly drift to one side and then 'warp' to a new location as the network updated. It was a fundamental part of PVP and there's still footage of drift turns online.
Thank you for the observation.
I'm even more excited than I was a few months ago when the first trailer was revealed. I can't wait. Grew up on these since the PS1.
A 'Trap' or 'Threat' sensor option on heads, or an 'advanced navigation' that suggests side/hidden routes would be an interesting head part perk.

I see
that clip of the arena near the end hit me with so much nostalgia, use to play that game so much when i was younger, had no idea it was an AC title
Class of ‘97 here. Astoundingly good video! So much I didn’t notice in the gameplay trailer too! I can’t wait for this.
My ac build in 5v was a high defense medium bipedal, twin minigun with the arms that can transform into swords, in group play i was the suppressive fire. What worked for me was i was able to maintain superboost for as long as i wanted since it was built for efficiency, so circling everyone was a easy task
The clip where you picked up the Moonlight blade in AC 1 hit me right in the feels. What a memorable mission.
Could you time stamp this clip ?
Okay, now I want vaatividya to make more lore videos behind Armored Core
No need, there's already a full youtube channel named "Armored Core Lore"
The lore is fairly spartan and you can't go down little rabbit holes like you can with item descriptions in Souls games. There's also a lot of untranslated material.
Its been a while since I played Armored Core and this video was a nice trip down memory lane. AC3 was my favorite back in the day.
All that Kota Hoshino music playing throughout the video really deserved a mention, I'm excited to see what AC6 is bringing musically!
This will be my first armoured core game but I'm already so hyped for this. I already know I'm going to go a bit crazy with crafting some insane mechs, my brain is already thinking of some fun possibilities that I just hope that the game will give me the ability to pull off
Welcome to the franchise and the community!
They looked a little stupid in AC4 since you were always flying or gliding around in that one, but in the others it was basically trading broad mobility for being able to armor up and carry the absolute biggest weapons.
in past game you could kinda fly with tank legs just not very long, drains your energy like nothing else.
Welcome to the series and the community!
