  • This was a service call on a walk in freezer with too much frost on the walls, I found several things wrong, and corrected them all.

      nota newbie I get to the point of thinking that if no one serviced the cheapo operators any more they eventually would have to pay, I was recently turfed on a job because I quoted a new evap and lineset on a bad leaker, sure enough they had the gas and go guys there the next day... what’s needed is the EPA to start fining these restaurant and store owners if they don’t want to pay to have their junk repaired / replaced, not just the technicians and service companies. Refrigeration is expensive.

    I'm willing to bet that the reason they have all those droplets on the ceiling is because someone is bringing hot food and cooling in the freezer seen it a million times when I was a cook.

      Yep Drain line not draining. / never hard pipe drain to pan. leave a gap have elbow fit over the drain outlet.

      @@megabadass30 A freezer 3 wire fan work when the coil hits 10 deg. It turns on the fans. the brown wire is the (x) on timer kick it out of defrost at 50 deg. So it fans turn on with no delay the is wrong. You kill the compressor. Freezer is not a cooler does not work the same. . I seen ice in the pan this is a bad drain system. Allway have a gup like a 1/18 copper ele over the drain outlet. Not rigid to pan. This pan is removable. Never hard pipe it to outlet. Moisture is sweat from Heat in defrost.

      Fan delay after defrost!!!! Allow the water to drain away first after defrost then any water in the tray does not spray onto the ceiling and freeze causing the droplets on the ceiling.

    The annoying thing with fridges/freezers is that people don't know how they work. They think "oh there's ice on the evaporator coil so that means its working", but they don't realize we need airflow to remove heat. I have an older lady who runs a pub and she assures me that she should be running her coolroom at -1 because "thats how she's always done it". I'm back removing ice every two months because it only has a fan controlled defrost since its a chiller and not a freezer. Every single time i get an earful, so one day i sat her down and explained the ins and outs of what happens in a refrigeration system. You'll be happy to know the next time i went there the thermostat was set at -1 again and i got another earful :)

      My boss would reply, "that's fine, we will gladly take their money". I had a customer that repeatedly stabbed his evap coils when they iced up. Kept fixing leaks from the stabs. We gladly took his money.

      lol thats a good one. I had a restaurant supply supper center that was running a island cooler at 29F. And every month or so we would go in and have to spray down the coils to de-ice them. I tried contacting their controls company which was out of state. All the temps in the store were controlled from out of state. I finally spoke to someone there and asked them how many defrost cycles did the island cooler have. None... of course was the answer. So I told them...that case was not designed to keep ice cream cakes or to run at that temp. It was causing constant flood-back to the rack. To this day. It's running the same at a cost of valve plate and compressor replacements.

    I once diagnosed my parents ac unit when I was 14. I typed up Ac not working on youtube and found out that capacitors go bad. When I opened up the back housing of the unit, there it was, a buldge sticking out the top of the capacitor.

    I want to give much respect for the way you handled that call. This is a level of Value, Customer Service and Integrity, we all in our trade should FOCUS in on. That Dixell door alarm controller was a finishing touch on that Job. Nice Work 1 contractor to Another.

    When I was a kid there was a programme on Southern Television (UK) called out of town where a chap called Jack Hargreaves would show how people used to do the jobs in the country - this is like the modern version - its really interesting to see what you do and how you think through the problem - thank you so much.

    Having worked at a job where I need to go into a walk in freezer I have to say the end result please me greatly. It is so awesome to be able to just walk in and grab something without having to dig through several layers or permafrost.

    good thing this is a restaurant and not a food manufacturing plant, they'd be getting cited under 21 CFR 117.35(a) for all that condensation all over everything. condensation is considered insanitary.

    That's why there's frozen water droplets all on the ceiling and spread through out the box. If you have a fan-delay switch that is not working. It will spray out water droplets every where since the fans just come on right when the t-stat calls. Water droplets all over the ceiling is an indicator that you have an issue with defrost, draining, or fan-delay. Great vid.

    i fix garage doors, I've had a customer drive completely through the door, and blamed it on me because "the garage didnt open fast enough." they were the ones that put in the opener, because I was "too expensive" tf is up with people like that.

    I work in a major retailer that has numerous walk in coolers / freezers, as well as whole isles for display, I have seen a lot over my years, one of the best was maintenance arguing that we were leaving door open, seals were a little worn, he replaced, kept on, still freezing up, finally he started listening, door never left open other than when loading or unloading, turned out drain for evap pan had broke & there was no trap working, most have a water trap to not allow air back, well that was allowing warm air into it, after he fixed line, no issues in several years.

    I like how, instead of telling them "Everything is moisture ruined due to you guys leaving the door open", you just install a solution that will make it impossible for them to forget to close the door :) I am sure after they jump out of their skin a couple times from the alarm, they will stop doing that.

    This was very educational, I used to work for mcdonalds as a maintenance man and my god did I wish you worked on our freezer. I swear they refused to get a proper job done because you literally pointed out at least four things that I am pretty certain were the issues with their system but they wouldn't listen or pay the money to get it done right.

    Looks exactly like the freezer where I work. My walk in has two piles of ice about 3 inches thick and a good 2 metres wide... One night when our freezer happened to be empty I took a hammer to the ice and removed it all. The managers were happy but some months later the ice had come back. Management didn't give two shits about the leak in the freezer.

    Always should pass through a cooler to enter a freezer. Warm, moist air is our #1 enemy in freezers. That defective fan-delay allows the warm, moist defrost-air to add frost onto the product-boxes, walls, ceiling, etc. Luv the new Ranco thermostat and the Alarm. GR8 video ! 🎉

      Thanks for the nice words, I started making these videos to show my own service techs how I want them to perform their service calls. Than i decided to make them public because there is massive amount of people that do not look at the big picture.

    i worked in a kitchen before that had the same exact problem, frost everywhere and especially around the door. The evaporator was directly in the middle of the ceiling and facing downward. Sometimes it would get so bad that the whole fan blades would be frozen and not spinning. Sometimes it would melt and drip to the floor where it would form a giant ice mountain (very safe). They said that the HVAC techs couldn't figure it out, but after working there for so long I figured they got a quote and said "screw that" especially since their station fridges constantly need to be refilled with refrigerant

    Gaskets sometimes can be a pain like door heaters
    Just had a walk in cooler act up only when it very cold outside
    Ended up being a intermittent problem with low pressure control STICKING ONLY DURING FREEZING WEATHER OUTSIDE
    RESPECT ON YOUR VIDEOS👍🏻 as refrigeration is always fun 😳

      Me too. But I was looking at ground heat pumps excessively day before so it make sense. I would watch it anyway, very cool. Another great channel of just doing things In the field: Andrew Camarata, excavations and other soil/ground/drainage related stuff by one man. Addictive.

      Bypassed DTFD can cause the droplets on the ceiling. Staying in defrost too long. You can’t diagnose a system without superheat and subcooling.

    This is How a Service Call With this issue SHOULD be Done ! Well done Chris & company! ( FTNGOT) unfortunately , 90% of customers will NOT Approve the cost to do this repair. ( Ftngot) - whenever i see frozen water droplets blown all across the ceiling guys u are looking at one of 2 things. most likely someone found a defective (DFTS) defrost termination switch/combination fan delay switch, did not have one on the truck and bypassed the DFTS or its just plain defective, replace it, so, what is going on is after the defrost cycle terminates the Drain pan still has water in it and the fans are coming on right after defrost Blowing any water on the coil or in the pan across the room. the box pulls down and freezes all that blown around water all over the room. u also want to make sure the drain line is clean and clear and drain line heater is fully functional. 90 percent of the time installing a New Fan delay switch / Defrost termination switch will solve this issue, but u also need to make sure All the water is leaving the drain pan within a few minutes. for customers that cannot or do not desire to drop all the cash at one time u could spread out this repair over time. replace the DFTS and check drain line first, in 3 months do a door closer, in 3 months do a door gasket. this spaces repairs over time for smaller customers and Keeps u coming back and can touch base with customers / good customer relations. FTngot = short for - For the new guys out there. Torn door gaskets are a Health department violation in california and a citable violation in california, so customers have to replace door gaskets unless they want thier business shut down- so those are a pretty easy sell and they stop doors from closing properly and cause all kinds of other problems units running all the time because the door is not closed , units shut off and come back on again too quickly stressing compressors short cycling, causing frozen evaporators on refrigerators etc, etc. good door seals are a must.
    Door closer on this service call was also a standout- it definately needed replaced also.

      Exactly...I’m having the same issue at a hospital that we do PM’s at. The building engineers swear that’s not the problem because they say the defrost termination switch works just fine and it’s defrosting. They don’t understand what the fan delay is there for. Those coils are supposed to get cold enough to freeze any residual water left on the coils after defrosting so that they don’t spray water all over the place when the fan kicks on. It’s hard to convince a building engineer that doesn’t know shit about how their unit is supposed to operate.

    It's nice to watch other craftsmen work. Something else which wasn't mentioned in the recap is that since the drip tray was misaligned and frozen up, it wasn't able to remove moisture from the freezer. Since the freezer is a sealed environment most of the time, the only way for moisture to escape is through condensate dripping off the exaporator and out through the drain during the defrost cycles. I would imagine that the moisture instrusion problem in the electrical boxes will be much reduced just by re-enabling the moisture egress path, but a surface mount replacement was certainly a very good idea!

    Door seal is usually #1 problem with moisture and icing. Glad you found the other problems, like you said the job is 1 1/2 hours away from your base. The flat roof with standing water was a concern as well if a leak develops.

    Love the troubleshooting and general diagnostics. Craftsman, regardless of specialty, have a way about them.
    I do all kinds of DIY and recently had a residential 40+ year old GE refrigerator burp. Needless to say, over the last few days, I've been OD'ing on refrigeration theory, practice, engineering, and repair.
    Thanks for putting in the effort to take us along on your professional endeavors! Highly interesting stuff for those of us with a mechanical bent.
    Oh, and my 40+ year old GE refrigerator? It lives on to cool another day!

    Its very sad that here is south Ontario some customer dont want to spend money on their equipments but expect keep running . Eventually end up replacing their equipments.
    But Its hard to convince some of them .

    Great video. I'm going to keep in mind that controller cuz I work at a school district and I've been there for nine years and occasionally I have to take care of some low temperature problems. We have some walk-in coolers in a few freezers. I've been mostly HVAC my 35 year career. I use electronic controllers on the district's walk-in coolers because we need tighter temperature controls. The dixell alarm kit that you installed is something that I'm probably going to be using a lot more here cuz we have the same problems with the monitors. Silicone never does the job I always use foam fill and have a lot better success. I occasionally replace some of our equipment. I always use foam I never use silicone it never feels every little crack and you have to fill every single crack. That dixell controller that you put on there will be really good at the school district here for some of our problem boxes. Great video

    Great video and very thorough job. One suggestion: After too many times dragging a hose into a box I got a 50' pieces of 1/4" ice maker tubing. Added various adaptors to fit different water hookup scenarios and a shutoff at the end. It's lighter in weight, easier to pull off the truck, provides gentle spray on coils, takes up much less room and saves a lot of TIME with setup and tear down. Just a thought. Keep up the good work.

      I used a 2 gallon pump up sprayer that I extended the hose on with a quick disconnect at the tank. Sometimes getting a hose where you need it wasn't worth the hassle.

    3 wire fan delay. Yup. A cheap part to replace regardless. If you have the coil sides cleaned and exposed, replace the 3wire fan delay.
    It's a snap disc, it's been exposed to heat/cold and snapping away.
    Definitely inspect the part and connections.
    It would be a shame to get a call back because of the F.D failing after you were just there.

    Exactly what happens at our work. They leave the freezer door open all the time. I told them they need to keep that freezer door closed We have replaced four gaskets so far it is usually because the company who delivers of food keeps both doors open so they can bring them into the cooler are freezer

    I usually find the hinge springs need to be replaced or adjusted on those type of hinges. You can get just the spring cartridges for not too much. Great job catching the limit switch.
