I'm a 21 y/o apprentice and they put me on call. Got a walk in today that was running warm and watching this on my way to the call definitely gave me a starting point , and made me look way more professional than calling around for answers scratching my head. You got a new subscriber!! Turned out it was low on Charge, and has a nasty kink in the discharge side from a push cart.
Check the sight glass on refrigeration. Bubbles is bad. Usually low on charge. Other things can cause that like a txv failing in a certain way . But frozen coil. Bubbling txv usually low
I’ve been doing HVAC-R for about 8 years. This whole time I’ve never thought about using voltage to check continuity. I am always de-energizing circuits to ohm them out. Haha all the time I’ve wasted! Love it! Subbed my man.
First thing I teach rookies is E..R..A..Electric, Refrigeration, Airflow. Contactors are a once a year item to change on PM. It's always good practice on single units to prevent calls. Good stuff..thanks for sharing.
Electric - Check supply voltage to Compressor, fans, solenoids, and contractors. Refrigeration - T stat, Discharge and Suction temperature, and metering device Airflow - Fan blades, Dirty Coils, Air dampers Is this what you mean?
Wow u guys rock...dam I learn more from u then my own shop gets frustrating trying to diagnose when u don't know where to start....really thx for some basics God bless
I appreciate your approach. I can't tell you how many times I've butted heads with my boss who's a "veteran" refrigeration guy. No joke, he insists on going to the condensing unit first, will not enter the cooler. My approach is that I must first verify the fans are running, no ice on coil, thermostat calling, and solenoid is energized before going up top.
Thank you for walking us through how you go about starting off your troubleshooting and diagnosis of the system much appreciated and nice troubleshooting
Wish all my hot calls were easy like yours today. Ill go on top as long as its not hail, lighting, or tornados 😃. From the guy in the middle lane on your way home yesterday.
Im watching alot of your rack system troubleshooting and studing how they work. I work on alot of small coolers and freezers (from 1/4 ton to 3 ton systems) for a statewide restraunt.
Good vid Rook ! The only thing i DISAGREE WITH IS INITIAL SMACKING OF TEMPERATURE CONTROL upon arrival. i Prefer to gently take off temperature control cover and check for a open with a Meter. ( That way u can " Catch " the Bad Temperature control in action if it is so. i Prefer to Try to Get Rid of Some of My " Old timer Bad Habits " & Be a Tech that Tests Rather than Guesses anymore. I Learned smacking controls from the Old timers ( a Bad Habit in my opinion now ). u Can smack it all u want After u have diagnosed it failed. Other than that Good vid. Totally agree with When buying Often used parts ALLWAYS Buy 2. one for job , one for Truck stock.
I happened to be on the market for some new boots. I will be checking out a pair of those tomorrow. Thanks for mentioning those and another great video!
Looks like an easy fix on a cruddy day. Always hated working in the rain. Even when it's warm it still just makes everything seem like it sucks. When it's cold it's downright miserable.
Good video . Noticed fans were running when the box was still around 55 degrees. I assume the Klixon DFT , FDS , was bypassed to bring the fans on even if the evaporator coil wasn’t cold 🥶 enough. But I’ve found lots of units that way , working with no problems. 😃
I love my keens they are great hiking shoes. But the lugs on the bottom of the shoe are made for rocky muddy. Terrain... Not flat rooftops i learned the hard way as i slipped not once but 3 times on a wet rooftop while the other guys walked just fine... They had flat bottoms on their shoes.
Maybe you’ll have better luck. Pick up a pair of lock laces on amazon. This is a known issue of regular laces breaking the eyelets. They are very comfortable and I have been pondering picking up another pair for the upcoming summer. But the soles just deteriorated like a Walmart brand boot. I ordered a hard soled keen and returned them after four days. Was one of the most uncomfortable boots I’ve ever tried, worse than boot camp issued.

Someone else that puts screws in the panels. I had a hvac heating call last month. Store was cold because the blower door was laying on the roof. /sigh
I really like it. To be honest I think I prefer a meter with a switch and not a push button board. Like the Fieldpiece SC440 I like it better. But I got this meter from my buddy and I really do like it.
Voltage Drop Test across contracts will tell you if contractor is on its way out. Years ago the contact pucks used to be substantial silver and one could file them flat. Now-a-days they are merely silver alloy filled and not worth messing with. Well actually I should not say that; many industrial contractors have replaceable contacts.

Never leave a freezer without checking defrost clock operations and defrost of course

You didn't check terminal to ground for tstat. What if no power coming to the thermostat u still would have gotten zero across the 2 terminals

No problem. I just ordered them a few days ago. They are really nice.
Me too. gonna check em out.
rookie - where do u get keens ?
Hi hello sir I'm bert from Philippines nice to see you in trouble shooting in walk in freezer
Nice work man. As a new tech in the trade I love watching these videos! Thanks for the information.

This store usually doesn’t have it in use. I guess I should’ve addressed that🤣
Rookie Refrigeration yeshh I’ve seen a jumper between Red and Black so that those fans come on just like a walk in cooler .
DTS is bad or by passed 🤔....I've seen alot of by-passed ones
Voltage drop on contactors is a good maintenance procedure. Thanks
You can also tell it's a low temp by the vapor injection.
I use to work at target as the maintenance guy, when filter replacment hit i hated those roofs. When wet its slippery as heck.
Yeah. They’re bad
Very informative sir..thank you
Rookie you need to get you a sponsor.
Lol. I don’t think I’m too pretty or PC to get a sponsor. But if u find one let me know
Talk to Chris from HVACR VIDEOS hook you up with a sponsor

Bought the same keens. Warrantied them at two weeks. Second pair lasted three months. Very comfortable, but they don’t hold up to our line of work.
Man don’t say that 🤣

Do I need heat trace on my walk in drain? It’s only about 1’ of piping before it goes outside. It has 3/4” insulation on it now.

Will do.
Do you have a preference on contactor manufacturers. the only reason I ask is copland contactors are crazy expensive here. Thanks for the video .
Brad Murray I actually like the 40a Eaton contactors with the lugs. Not a big fan of the 30a with the screw type connections. But Copeland is great.
great stuff. you're a real pro

Yes sir. Good meter
Thanks in a million.
What type of shoes was that..
Man I could have used a call like that been running across a lot of frozen up cases here lately, bad heaters clogged drains dead fan motors yay
Oh man you can keep that everyday and twice on Sunday. That’s the worst
Is that evap coil hanging in the center of that box
Will Phillips probably. Yes I believe

How the heck did a three phase compressor survive from a leg loss?
Wait, did you open up that contactor without turning off at the disconnect? I've been shocked too many times in my life to try that, lol
What is the name of your safety boots
Don't usually low temp compressors have liquid injection?
Yes. Keyword, usually.

classic case of poor

Why were those fans running, it should've been off due to the fan cycle switch
👍👍👍

Thanks bro
sometimes you may find a bug in one of the contactor lines.
