  • Malagueña - Ernesto Lecuona, arr. Johan Boekema
Uit het examenconcert van 18 juni 2024
This was the last song of my exam. An exam like this should have some different songs, different styles, and some nice own compositions or arrangements. One of the styles you haven’t heard is latin. And to be specific an Andalusian Flamenco, from Malaga. But this is J&B’s Jazz Orchestra so we mix in some jazz.
We’re back to the Drum Corps Summer Contest of 1989. On one of the tapes a friend brought over from the States, there was also the Madison Scouts from the town of Madison in Wisconsin. They played a song during their show which turned out to be the loudest performance ever in these contest. One of the lovely things of that performance is the mellophone solo in the end. That’s why I borrowed a mellophone, a front-facing F-horn, from Showband Marum for this piece.
But after 1989 I heard another rendition of that same song performed by the big band of Stan Kenton. He also used mellophones in his recording. 4 of them!
It won’t be the loudest Drum Corps performance, but I bet you’ll hear it even in the back of the room.
Here's from the Andalusian Suite written in 1933 by Ernesto Lecuona, the Andalusian Flamenco, the song La Malagueña.
