D&D Story: Tragedy + Time = More Tragedy

  • This video is broken up into two sections. First story is about metagaming when we fought a shadow monster and the second part involves Bohdi Treeshadow. (Corrections: A few issues in this video. First, I think I mispelled his name on the gravestone. Might be Bohdi not Bhodi. Second, I actually messed up a few things in the Crown of Madness description. The spell uses someone's action. However, a valid target has to be within melee range. If there's no valid target, the target then gets to take their turn as normal. Since there's no one near the Bard at the time, he gets his action.)

      if he's stabbed while helpless that's a coup de grace: free crit and fortitude check (DC10 plus damage to not instantly die)
      though this rule does not officially exist in 5e, there are unofficial rules to cover it, free crit and prompting death saves

    • @tinkerer3399
      @tinkerer3399 3 ปีที่แล้ว +53

      @@ChibiKami Except the person shown isn't really in a helpless position. And you gotta be careful about how you define that, if a simple grapple is all that it takes to make someone helpless those grapple builds have just turned any grappleable opponents into 1 shot chumps.
      Better to either explicitly separate plot wounds from normal combat wounds or only take level 0 hostages.

    • @DemonKing19951
      @DemonKing19951 3 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      @@tinkerer3399 I'd home brew that because DnD character's HP pool generally shows they haven't taken a 'serious wound' yet, nothing that couldn't be addressed by bandages or a basic healing spell and all that. In this case if someone has a sword to your neck/throat I might as a DM rule not only can they attack as a reaction (burrowing from anima) but it's counted as if it's a touch attack for the purposes of AC and depending on the wound type deals a flat percentage of your overall HP based on a D20 of course. Basically, you might survive but probably shouldn't try it if you're even close to half health.

  • @ShasOSwoll
    @ShasOSwoll 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1049

    We also had a moment of "Don't daggers only do 2 damage?" but we also argue that when someone is obviously held in a helpless position any attack can be treated as a Coup de Grace. Home rulings like these are a GODSEND in games like GURPS or Shadowrun where any enemy you find yourself against is probably wearing so much armor a pistol won't even tickle him, but if you sneak up and put the gun up under his helmet, it's GOING to kill him regardless of damage.

    • @ebonslayer3321

      I think Coup De Grace is a game rule extending back to at least 3.5e. Targets labelled "helpless" can be forced into a really tough save or die roll.

    • @ShasOSwoll
      @ShasOSwoll 3 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      @@ebonslayer3321 yes but how often do you get someone in a position that is truly "Helpless"? There are hardly any maneuvers in the game that allow that without ridiculous rolls or specific abilities, it's much easier to just have the GM fiat it and say "This will be a lethal attack"

    • @Terrorkarel
      @Terrorkarel 3 ปีที่แล้ว +52

      Yeah, health, armor class, and damage rolls in DnD are meant for combat, like actual combat, if you slit a throat with a dagger you should probably go with instant death if it fits as a DM.

    One of my favorite things is to make player deaths retroactively important: in one case, the dead guy was a prince who ran away in secret, and the rogue (his best friend,) used disguise to pretend to be him long enough to resolve a civil war, and create a republic.

    I hope brew that when you have someone tied up restrained(not the condition) or other wise fully incapacitated. Attacking to kill is instantly down to death saves. Like cutting someone’s throat shouldn’t be 1d4+dex and maybe sneak attack. Like damage in dnd is weird because normal people have 5 hp and a +1 to dex so it makes sense that a dagger only does 1d4. But at higher levels the damage scaling is insanely weird

      I tend to resort to a much simpler and older rule - referred to on TV Tropes as the Chunky Salsa Rule. "Any situation that would reduce a character's head to the consistency of chunky salsa dip is fatal, regardless of other rules."
      In other words - even if the hostage NPC is a 20th level Barbarian who's unconscious from a drug or the like and unable to rage, and the villain is able to take their time and properly open up an artery, then he's bleedin' out pretty damn quick. As in I'd just set them instantly to zero HP, regardless of how much they had, with one pre-failed death save. Harsh? Probably. But it means a hostage situation with a blade already pressed to a major artery has actual stakes to it.

    Interesting stuff! Glad you're back!
    We usually considered moments when a character was being held a knife point as "coup de grace" moments. Regardless of damage it was usually understood that they were defenseless and entirely at their captors mercy.
    The deaths of characters on the other hand... We often had players that had watched Dragon Ball, so a slew of bad luck was seen as an opportunity to find a sage who could help us use Wish.

    I remember my first character's death was in a last stand type of situation. The big bad and just retreated behind a gate that was dropped after she ran by. We were SUPPOSED to go around in order to catch up with her. Instead, my barbarian rolled a nat 20 strength check and lifted the nearly 1 ton gate of steel, if just barely. Everyone crawled through as enemies poured in to attack the barbarian which was al alone. In the end I think I killed at least 15 soliders before I kicked the bucket.

    "The elven man, husband of a murdered wife and father of a banished son and murdered son, disappears into the forest to live out his days"
    IDK, sounds like the perfect setup for a dread necromancer. Someone who would pervert all laws of life and death, pay any price, sacrifice any last shred of sanity or humanity, just to save ONE of the loved ones he lost.

    Recently, our campaign had a bit of a double-edged sword. While the party was exploring, we came across a fancy chest buried in the ground, which my character tripped on. With some investigation, and the aid of my character's Sword of Sharpness, we broke the locks and checked its contents: a magic jeweled goblet, and a nonmagical jade breastplate. The goblet had some illusion magic that made water look like gold, and the breastplate was solid jade; not practical as armor, but expensive. Taking those items, we then got into an encounter with a horde of raptors. After our nature specialist failed to communicate with them (and one of the other PC's used a free action to cast Magic Missile) we got into a brutal fight and were forced to run into hiding to survive. Also, most of our rations were wasted to distract the raptors. Our DM would later say, respectively, that they were one of the best and one of the worst encounters he could have rolled for us.
    Short Version: Found a fancy treasure chest, got ambushed by raptors and sacrificed all our food.
    Also, we later made 1270GP off of the treasure we found. It was a good time.

    Daggers only do 1d4 in combat. A dagger pressed up against someone’s vital area with no armor? That’s a bit different of a situation…I’d rule that it could easily kill…it’s not combat

    Holy crap. ow... I've been playing for 4 years now, and have only experienced one character death, which, granted, was traumatizing, but it also didn't count. This almost made me cry. (for anyone wondering, the death we had was my character, Mae Ryth, a "human" warlock of sorts (a lot of stuff happened and homebrew, at the time of her death, she was actually a harpy witch). We were guarding a location where one of the seven heavenly virtues, hope specifically, was supposed to be born. Most of the party had gone inside, but me and one other PC and one NPC had stayed outside. after a while, an old man came along, and after a lot of stuff, turns out he was a shapeshifter and also was actually this one shopkeep everyone loved. He tried to kill the other PC, but my character pulled the shopkeep, named Tom Barthollemews, aside and he killed her instead. After 55 years in the Abyss though, the other PCs managed to revive my character.)

    The Broken Wastelands sounds alot like this idea I had for a D&D session back when 3.5 was current lol. My idea was basically called "The Realm of Nzonia" and had a floating/flying citadel city in the guy as the academy for adventurers, and then there was a giant continent that had been exploded with a weird combination of science and magic, which caused mutated almost radioactive like monsters, like an undead female zombie, her stomach burst and the undead fetus reaching out to you from within a sludge of green goop.
    And the entire background story was that the Broken God had been freed.....somehow, and was taking his revenge not just on the Drow, but the world in general.
    I even had an entire country that was gonna be run by Minotaur Barbarians
