- I was supposed to be fixing up the PlayStation Classic that I took the donor chip off on my last PS Mini fix. But like the idiot I am, I made the working one faulty again in the process.
Let's see if we can fix them both!
Hope you enjoy!
Steve
PS. I'm not an expert in repairs at all. I do this for fun, and it may not be the best or safest way to go about repairing broken stuff. I'm pretty good at melting plastic though. Please don't copy me - I'm an idiot.

Stupid Accidentally Fried PS Classic
And I bet it didn't even taste nice.
Stupid Steve / electricity / tiny capacitors.😂🎉
Stupid flying components !
@@Poppinwheeeeellllllieeeeez yet you’re still here...
@@Poppinwheeeeellllllieeeeez Leave then. I'll still stick around.
Your only can fix it,not playing 😅
Ive had one of these since they came out, it stopped showing a power light after about 5 uses... suspect it may be a similar issue but without this equipment its too hard to fix. Such a shame, but i feel the quality of these sony consoles isnt as good as the ones from Sega and Nintendo
That rap is SLAPPING!!! Woooo!!! I was shaking my booty like there is no tomorrow.
Ah, you're not stewped. Just yesterday, I shorted out the CB radio that I was working on and caused components to turn into short-lived toaster element.
Kepton tape is your friend... if you'd just give it a chance! 😅
be more careful next time. i never play that game be for to intel i got my PS Classic
8:48 I noticed you plugged the monitor into a separate power supply. That seems wasteful. You already had a perfectly good power supply that the PS Classic was plugged into.
Nothing beats the PS1 intro sound! Nostalgia to my heart! 🙂
Where did you get all of your replacement chips from?
Sending bits to the 9th dimension at 4:20
hey thanks for this great video! My PS Classic's USB control chip is fried in the same way. I will also buy a USB control chip and replace it, but the components that accidentally flew out in your video are also burned on my PCB. What are the values of the smd components that correspond to the back of the pcb in the region where these and the control usb control chip are located?
In my experience, once I go to the effort to strip something down, break it, fix it and put it all back together, once I'm satisfied I never even use it after 😂
This is so so tiny to solder.. it was bad enough watching your NeoGeo Pocket fix.. brilliant sir !!
Stupid game.
the outro song is nightmare inducing
Soldering these teeny tiny surface mount components seems like an exercise in frustration - you have so much patience for it!
I’m a field engineer. My entire life is “better order 2.”
"Let's see if that fixed it" still has half the video left. Oh no
4:24 2 more components to find
Your monitor drawing 3amps thru a completely different USB port shouldn't affect another device
you should add a fuse to both of them to stop it happening again
Hi, I have the same problem 😢can you please help me by sending me a link we’re to buy that chip. I would like to try and fix mine. Thanks for any help.
Watching you work gives me anxiety... The clumsiness, the carelessness, utter obliviousness... Honestly inspiring.
I have 2 questions what and why do you use the gel and the blue stuff and the light that makes it "solid" =)
I have a fat PlayStation 2 that doesn’t turn on if your interested
04:23 ;-)
nice
4:24 capacitors leave to another dimension.
I gotta say, loving your background music selection 👍🏼👍🏼
I was wondering how long it would take you to notice you blew off those caps at 4:24
I did the same thing on accident I was so sad a week after my birthday
Only the 2nd video I've watched so far.....your humor is perfect. My new fav gaming/fix it channel.
I haven't done that yet I only play games and it's left on from Friday to Sunday quit often also get a trueblue mini USB to make the system better game list
Lost my s**t at "fiddlesticks" LMAO
That’s why I’d avoid hot air as much as possible 😂
Where did you get these chips Steve? I have the exact same problem two ps1 Classic's with fried USB controller chips. Got my hot air station ready and waiting, Could you provide a link to the sellers page for these RTS5482 I have looked all-over cant find anyone selling them. Cheers
Ironic, just found your channel and commented on another video (I think your smd practice board) that you should try working on CP2105-F01-GMR and wouldn't you know it. Still way to much air speed/pressure for my preference (oh you just said I"m going to turn air flow down) you're improving! I come from BGP reflow in the xbox 360 RROD peak, and moved on to Apple stuff and iPhone nand recovery, it's always fun to watch someone improve.
Most people: ah shit, I fried my ps-one, better get a new one.
Stez: CONTEEEEENNNTTTTTTTTTT
When you sent those components flying I was screaming in my head 😂
Great video! I believe I am having the same issue. Do you have a link to the chip for this? thanks!
im fried too. dont fix me please
What is the magic sauce you use to heat up the surrounding contacts of the chip instead of de-soldering them individually?
Hello mate.. love your videos!! What is that portable monitor you used at the end of the video? Thanks
He did Sofia 😳
This patreon music I like, can and will listen. ;)
Hi, my Nintendo ds only works at an angle and makes a popping sound when I fold it back into a straighter angle, can I fix it WITHOUT pulling it apart?
I have a copy of Paper Mario n64 and a raspberry pi that both have issues that I would gladly send you for content on your channel. Just need you to reach out to me somehow. I can send to a P.O. Box or whatever you want. I don’t need them back. They’d be yours.
Hey Stez. I have a stupidly overprice headset. I accidentally dropped them just a couple of feet and the power button stopped work. I read online , its common for the button connection to the board to "snap" when dropped. I wonder if you can fix it, and how much would it cost me to get it done (assuming I arrange postage and collection)? (Headphones are SteelSeries Arctis 9 , in case that makes a difference)
Gotta give it to Steve, his Patron/Members shoutouts have improved a ton since its debut!
LOL, Hell of repair xd
It looks like your battery pack supports 9v and 12v usb power delivery. I don't think the amperage is what killed the console, but the fact that the monitor requested a higher voltage and the battery ended up sending that voltage to the console as well, since they were connected to essentially the same port.
That's how I understood it.
Yeah I'd call this "Stupid USB monitor". It ought to send only the voltage requested by the particular port, to that port.
Yes exactly. Amps are "sucked" by the thing consuming it. Volts are "pushed" by the thing producing it. It's why we have sockets that can give 13A but you can plug a little 0.1A thing in and nothing goes bang.
@@ovalteen4404 Nope, if one USB port has a request sent to it by the connected device for a higher voltage, that voltage is sent to both ports instead of isolating the feature to just one port, its a really stupid design.
I really hope people appreciate the amount of precision this takes. These components are so incredibly small. Great work as always.
"Fiddle Sticks".....seamless editing, i don't think anyone will notice :D
I know nowt about electronics, but it's moments like 7:34 that keep me glued to this channel. Always makes a rubbish day better when Steve posts a vid. Keep up the good work. We appreciate you!
Nice! I'm looking for a PS1 classic, but this thing is getting really expensive here in Brazil. If I find a fried one for cheap, now I know how to fix it.
I must say Steve I pissed myself laughing when I sore those little chips went flying 😂good old Steve u always bring a smile to my face absolutely love your channel and loved the fiddle sticks voice over when u said a rude word when u sent the small one flying again with the hot air lol keep up your good good work mate and congratulations on nearing 100 thousand subscribers
Rewatched it about eight times.
I actually Laughed Out Loud 😂😂
i was waiting to see how long it took him to notice, lol
Steve and his magic hot air rework gun "Fly capacitors!!! Be free!!!" 😄🤣😄🤣
I think the missing one was a flyback capacitor.
You know it's going to be a good day when Steve uploads a new video for us to enjoy!
You've gotten really good at replacing those chips... well done as always
These are the only repair videos that make me laugh while watching a repair.. thanks Steve!
Another brilliant patreon song, I swear there's no genre you can't expertly remix into a song of names!
😊 thanks Adam! I'm sure I'll butcher another genre again soon! 😁
@@StezStixFix Any chance of getting a Death Metal one with a cooky crumbler voice?
I don't own one if these, have no tools to fix anything or even desire to start attempting anything like this but I'm hooked on your videos! Thanks
I just wanna say you are very underrated. You make great, relaxing content that's not only satisfying to watch but also educational. Thank you for everything you do and hello from the USA :)
I don’t understand how a monitor that takes more amps can fry the PS Classic. I’m not much for electronics theory, but the way I understand it is that amps are drawn, not pushed, so any parallel device that draws more amps would not somehow force more amps into the other.
I was wondering this myself. Maybe the jump in power required to drive the monitor pushed some extra voltage into the PS? Would need to know the circuits better to really understand what happened, but assuming that the monitor needed more power (it needed more current), then the driving power supply would have needed to push a little extra voltage. V=IR, so if the extra voltage went into the PS, then it would have forced more amperage and in turn more power and voila! You have a plastic BBQ.
Shame, though, as I'm an advocate for putting power regulation circuits and fuses into products, and its honestly a little cheap for the PS to not have one. It should always be the responsibility of the product to account for poor voltage supply (ie. brown outs, electrical storms, shoddy home wiring, etc). You'd need to put this thing on a surge protector to keep its voltage at an acceptable level, and I'm sure a lot of people are not doing that.
My guess is that the monitor was USB C powered, and took more than 5 volts. When he plugged the monitor in, it would have asked the power bank to start outputting that higher voltage. The voltage meter probably just passes the battery voltage through, and started sending the higher voltage to everything connected to it.
@@jcon6734 I figured as much but also though he’d say watts or voltage in that case.
Dang this was a good one I can't believe you found the small one and the "fiddlesticks" got me good 😂😂
If it's not allowed it shouldn't have two outputs in my opinion, not your fault, great video 😊
I don't know why, but I lost it laughing with Steve's s over-dub of "fiddlesticks" dealing with the small capacitor. Thanks Steve, I needed a good laugh.
I wanted to say thank you! Your other video helped me fix the core grafx mini I fried out of the box with a pi3 psu.
Fix it, break it, fix it. The gift that keeps on giving.
Would adding in a replaceable fuse be a good mod to prevent future chip destruction?
or zener diode.
Happy New Year Steve!! Like the January sales, looks like we got a two for one here!!!
Thanks Greg! Happy New Year! 👍
Good job! You didn't end up turning two consoles into junk! So proud of you.
Fried chips are nothing unusual, Steve ! At least you sorted it twice over. Big respect 👍
Makes my day when he belts out a great song at the end 👌👌
If you're going to be working with such small parts I recommend putting kapton tape on top of them and around your targeted working area. Can really help prevent such issues.
Yep, also keeps some heat off. It’s very expensive tape but also very worth it.
Great 👍 video. Miracle Worker
This donator song is a new evolution. Listenable, very enjoyable! Level up!
Hilarious, brightened up my evening. Keep the bloopers in, makes me feel better about the mistakes I've made.
Defiantly the best DJ I have heard on TH-cam and the tech stuff is nice bonus. Cheers mate!
Probably your greatest song. (I never skip it, although sometimes I wish I did.)
Nice fix. I have seen other repair channels tin the back of the chip to help it jump into place and keep from having to push down onto the chip to make connections.
Before putting in a new chip, you have to clean the old solder pads. Do not forget, otherwise the resulting weld will not be good.
Great fix! I'd mod one and leave one stock. The mod is really easy, but requires one of the USB ports to always be in use.
It's MUCH safer to use a USB OTG adapter on the back of the console to mod, and it keeps your front ports open.
@@shreyarayneit’s a great machine when you mod it.
The power bank you are using, can it switch to 9 volt or even higher?
Steve 2 - Stupid fried PS Classic 0! Nice to see you revive this once again.
😁 Thanks Heidi!
A great info-tainment video Steve. Really enjoy your channel and this time the singing wasn't bad either. Thanks fella 👍
Love your videos Steve, keep them coming. Great fix, despite flying components. Not stupid at all, made my day, thanks 🙏🏻
That is such a classic start up sound.
Awesome fixes. Good to see these two PS Classics back playing games. Was singing along to your cover of ring of fire at the end of the video.
Creeping up on 100k man, congrats!!
so much easier to solder those small caps on using solder paste+hot air instead
Beauty! Happy New Year Steve 👍
Thanks Chris, Happy New Year! 👍
I got rushed into hospital on Friday afternoon with a burst appendix. My evening was made up when your new video popped up, although I did very nearly pop my stitches when that little component blew away 😂
I think that was the best disassembling rap ever. "Nice".
Those components that you remounted. Does the orientation matter? I'm not asking about swapping the large/small locations but rather the left/right orientation of each component.
Funny but I never subscribed until I heard the patreon montage! I laughed but watched whole silly video, IT WAS GREAT!!
Get some tip tinner and cleaner from farnell, it's like a little tin of hard paste that you clean your soldering tip with, you'll get a lot more use out of your tips with regular tinning and cleaning and it saves a few bob on replacement tips.
Great job! The “fiddlesticks” dub caught me off guard though! 😂
The chip on the left lifted too when you 1st heated the big one
Given how easy these seem to be to cook, it might be worthwhile to mod in a fuse. The case is cavernous enough that you could probably even find room for a fuse holder. Might save you from having to buy those chips in bulk.
