The only part of the first movie that got me confused was Jerid attacking.... uh... what's-her-name for insulting him or showing him up, even though that part of the original episode wasn't included in the film. Now it just seems like he's a psycho who's prone to attack anyone for no discernable reason. At least the TV series showed that he only attacked people who provoked him first, ironically making him more restrained than Kamille "MY NAME IS A MAN'S NAME!!!" I thought the movies were intended to complement the show rather than replace it. They certainly don't hold up for stand-alone viewing, but do sometimes fill in some gaps. Granted, some of the retcons do make for some breaks in continuity, but the new perspectives can be interesting to discuss. As a 20th anniversary celebration of Zeta Gundam, it seems like the movies were really aimed at the diehard fans of the original broadcast who were willing to hit the theaters for some nostalgia. It doesn't work as an introduction to the story or characters at all. The question might be, was it worth it to view the new animation on the big screen?
One other that makes this trilogy even more depressing is that the third film is not only the last time Hirotaka Suzuoki voiced Bright (who gets the last line "I can figure out for myself what they're talking about [what Kamille and Fa are saying as they embrace]. I watched Zeta when it was first released as a kid. This year, I decided to watch it with my son to start him up on Gunpla kits. I found out about the compilation films and bought them straight away. We got to the part where Camille snatches the Mk IIs. I stopped the playback, took the discs out, and through all three films into the bin, then bid on e-bay for the original series. It was beyond comprehension. They should've gone with 10 to 12 one-hour episodes instead of 3 films. They could've emphasised on fewer core themes to expand instead of trying to include everything (whilst changing everything and messing up the logic down the timeline. Char's counter-attack just seems illogical and unreasonable now.).
Honestly the first two aren’t that bad and they work as refreshers for the main story but the third one is pure chaos. It’s like 90 straight minutes of fighting and death with zero room to breath. I’m pretty sure Haman betrays both the AEUG and Titans in the span of 5 minutes and then hitches back up with them again right after. It’s crazy. I think the movies do some good stuff, cutting the fat of the middle of Zeta and removing stuff like the Rosamia arc but that comes at the cost of the Dakar speech, Kilimanjaro, Kamille getting arrested and the Ghost Colony. They really needed an extra 30 or so minutes, even if that was just to add in some more exposition to explain what in the fuck is happening half the time
I preferred the compilation movie to the series for OG gundam and Ideon, so i was hoping this would have a good movie too. Shame to hear it does not. Roasmia is my preferred cyber newtype, so seeing she got cut even more than four is disappointing
I disagree with video. I watched both the series and movies. I like them both for different reasons. The movies aren't meant to be an exact compilation of the TV series. Rather a reinterpretation with new animation and some altered storylines. I recommend you watch them and make up your own mind.
I appreciate your opinions here, but I have to disagree on several points. I think the movies overall tell a much more cohesive and watchable story. The show (and most long-running Gundam series in general) suffers greatly from its format, especially the formula of having 10 minutes of plot followed by 10 minutes of usually inconsequential space combat to sell toys/model kits for the majority of its episodes. It may be a bias from having watched the films first or just me getting old and having limited time, but I don't feel like there was enough worthwhile content in the TV series that I missed by watching the films to justify sitting through the trickling pace, wandering narrative, and formulaic episode structure. There were so many sequences in the TV series that I just couldn't bring myself to care about that it left a pretty negative impression on me. Then of course there's the ending. If they ever do a film treatment of ZZ, I think the changes could be incorporated pretty comfortably, so I don't really have a problem with the ending changes. I was able to move on to ZZ without really any issue by just reading what the changes were. My only major gripe, and it's something I can agree with you on, is the really uncomfortable and sudden changes in art style throughout the films. It was a constant distraction, and given just how much content was re-animated, they probably should have just re-animated the whole story.
No worries, you’re absolutely entitled to agree or disagree! I do agree that the episodic structure is kind of what makes the series suffer in some aspects, but for some instances it works better for me because it allows some characters to be introduced like Rosamia and not just introduced and tossed to the side to never be seen again. But for the most part I’m beggining to understand how an episodic structure like 0079’s might have made the series suffer a way lot ever since I read The Origin.
since the zeta movies follow an alternate path of events the uc timeline seems a lil fucked it looks likekamille will continue being a pilot since he got happier ending at the end of zeta
Yup, I think in gihren’s greed or something ? Kamille continues as the pilot where at the end of Zeta, he had already hit his limit but since he survives, he continues to strain himself and eventually dies to haman. Judau also never joins the AEUG in this alternate timeline since the Argama still has their ace.
The movies is called A New Translation, base just on that of course they were gonna change the ending and someone at the time from ppl behind the movie said is just a different take, is not really to retcon anything. So, like someone in the comments already said, the movie is a complement for the fans of the series to celebrate the anniversary by enjoying new scenes and rejoice in the new ending, thats all. Now, if you really gonna criticize what they have to cut out of a 50 ep series for 3 movies, i wonder what would you cut out to make it in the specified time.
I watched the first compilation last night, and it was terrible. I would continue it but, since I already watched the show, i really don't want to continue it.
@@CheemsBased I completely agreed with the point that it made no sense for them to skip Kamille's introduction. I also remember this weird new scene they added where, when Emma comes to the Argama, some Hijack pilot had diarrhea or something. I don't remember if that was in the original, but what was the point of that. I think the idea that they added a poop joke was what really took me out of this version. Also, and this may be heresy, but I miss the english dub's opening. Even if they only did it because they couldn't use the OG opening, that track they used settled me into the dark reality of Zeta so well.
On the bright side we got Metamorphoze as the opening for the First film, and that was a banger, agreed though, the English Zeta Gundam is one of my favorite substitute openings in anime
That was actually gonna be my next video! Was gonna make one for recommending the manga for newcomers, and after that a set of videos on my thoughts on it!
@@CheemsBased That's great to hear! I will most definitely be looking forward to that as that topic alone is both hot and important when it comes to considering the future of the Gundam franchise. Evangelion rebuild was actually based of that manga in terms of remake, yet the Origin has not went forward with this idea. Recently, there was an interview with Yasuhiko who was considering as to whether or not the origin to continue, though I believe that he should since it will fix the UC newcomer entry problem. Also, the new AU approach has worn out and has clearly not worked to attract new Gundam fans since IBO clearly signifies this failure.
I feel like i just need to watch the old series fast forwarded and has english dubs so I dont have to read that fast to learn the full story and all knowing how much characterizations gets cut
I feel like the frankensteined animation tells they were originally going to compile it differently but maybe do to last second decision changes they decided to throw in old animation. But a retconned ending serviced absolutely no one. I was waiting for it to pan out to the real ending, like some psychedelic horror type effect but no. At least we got good Master Grades out of it.
These films could've been the 2nd Coming of the original Film trilogy, or better than the original trilogy with better animation and more fleshed out scenes. But what we got is an abomination.
People should not have some high expectation at first point, it is a 50 episode compress to 3 movie things, the only thing I found very missing is, should the newtype psycho attack success or not in the end, since they alter it, im so confuse which one should be go. I think both 50 episode and movie should be view as an one product, although both of them have little different anyway.
Was doing some research on the production of these films and they had a really tight production schedule so they had to redo only a handful of stuff instead of the whole thing
No, that is incorrect. Director Tomino gave an interview. He originally wanted to re-animate ALL the Zeta footage with new modern animation. But the studio SUNRISE said no, and denied his request. The studio wanted to be cheap. So they gave Tomino a small budget, and a small animation team. After Sunrise saw how much money the first Zeta Gundam movie made at the box office, Sunrise increased the budgets for the 2nd and 3rd movies. So Tomino was able to include a lot more new animation. But due to tight production schedules, his team was not able to re-animate all of it before release. And Sunrise didn't want to give him more time. The studio was being greedy and wanted to release it as fast as possible.
Agreed. Plus the movies were meant to reintroduce Zeta Gundam to a whole new generation of fans who never saw the series. These movies were made 20 years later.
How does Kamille not being mind-blasted into a coma affect the rest of the U.C.? I've seen that statement pop up a lot, but I've never quite seen an adequate explanation
Well it removes a reason for Char to flip his entire script for Char's Counterattack, before at least there was a reason, according to New Translation we're supposed to think Char just said "Fuck it, Earth dies" for no discernable reason during CCA, part of the plot of ZZ Gundam incorporates the fact Kamille's effectively brain dead. I wouldn't say it effects the U.C. entirely, but the immediate series after Zeta Gundam becomes much more muddled and make less sense on with CCA.
I thinks it's pretty obvious once you go digging that a lot of these issues in terms of the condensed plot, relatively short run-time of each movie and the questionable mish mash of new and old footage simply comes down to Sunrise once again fucking over Tomino and tying his hands as is their usual modus operandi. It's honestly a wonder that any decent Gundam content manages to be produced with Sunrise being involved.
So the thing was I was already at the point in the series where the zeta Gundam made its first appearance but then when compilation films came out on TH-cam for a little bit I watched them since I was trying to marathon uc and dude I don’t remember anything Lmao (if you were wondering I was watching the show on one of those anime websites the illegal ones lmao)
The reason it doesn't work... is because it should have been FOUR movies instead of three. Four movies would have given plenty of room for everything to breathe and flow organically.
He'll never give it a try. He's 100% convinced the series is as bad as the films, which isn't the case. My brother's a pretty stubborn guy when it comes to trying new things lol
I don't get why they didn't make each film 2 to 2.5 hours. The 0079 movies are a lot longer while compiling a smaller amount of source material. In A New Translation, it hurts especially the first movie, where a lot of character establishment is skipped in favour of quick flashbacks. I've actually seen the Zeta series before, but I still had trouble remembering what the hell was going on. I would call that a pretty damning indictment. The other two films do kind of sweep you up in the drama, but as a whole, this trilogy doesn't leave a very good taste in the mouth. Really a missed opportunity here to make something that can stand on its own like the 0079 movies. That's not a dig on the 0079 series by any means, but the movies do some things very well, especially since the series' ending had to be rushed so not all its themes could be explored very well, and there's quite a bit of filler even in those 43 episodes. Whereas Zeta comes with 50 episodes that may have some filler and some fat to trim here and there, but it's a very cohesive series overall, so it's hard to decide what to cut.
When I got to the bit where they show the aftermath of the 30 bunch incident through fucking footage instead of actually going to visit it themselves, I just turned off the movie, if they're going to make such an important scene that minor, then what the hell is the point in watching the rest of this?
I've been coming back to videos to gather some opinions. I've got my own project going already, but i've been considering doing a personal zeta and ZZ rewrite. I mainly want to tighten up zeta a bit, then pretty much overhaul ZZ so that it connects to CCA better. because let's be honest, despite Kamille getting an ending, and bright returning. you can completely skip it.
Not sure you really understood why Kamille went at Jerid, but that might be because the english localization, did their own take on it. The nuance is totally different. Kamille doesn't hate his parents. He's just disgusted they are both employed by a PMC; rather than say, a public service industry like Anaheim engineering. Zeta Gundam focuses on the corporate conflict (for GenX during the late 70's, early 80's that was a thing). The Federation and Zion impoverished themselves fighting the One year War; and subsequently the Feds didn't have the power to enforce law. So, oligarchs like Jamitoff saw an opportunity, and erected the PMC "Titans"; and in response public service corporations freely backed a veterans force called the AEUG to contest them. As they are not military corporations and wanted to avoid another all out war erupting in response to the Titans oppressive control. That was Jamitoffs real aim. He not only hijacked the Jupiter project (a publicly funded project), he was asserting control over all the publicly owned companies. It was only a matter of time until he took them all. So Kamille was disgusted by the whole thing. Jerids comment didn't mean anything, Kamille says so later on. Its the disrespect is like a ripple effect, y'know, it starts with a kid like him and ends up being everybody, because no one stands up to them. - bit of a foreign concept these days I suppose. I've only seen the first translation film when it released. Didn't hate it, some of the effects were good. Its where there are iconic moments that it felt a bit gratuitous. I did enjoy the depth of the 360 monitor inside the cockpits. I guess the kinda money they were spending on it, they needed to get as much outta it as possible.
If you consider brainwashing then at least Rosamia and Four were forced into the cyber newtype position. Recoa Londe just went out of her way to join the titans even though She was part of the AEUG. Leaving the argama purely on the basis of a crush towards scirocco kind of reduced her significance in the whole anime. Not to mention she was a bad pilot as well Emma sheen on the other hand did the opposite left the titans to work for the radish and then the argama.
I've heard a rumor that there's a plan for another zeta project once hathaway is done. Also, I actually prefer four's death in the second movie. I wish they had given her more character prior. What brings the old one down for me is that she flops back and forth between remembering kamille and not. But I think the new death makes more sense for the plot and in universe as well. I mean, her cockpit is stabbed and blown up, yet she's still in one piece? yeah okay... i guess. But also neither really do a good job with the romance between them. I think it would be better that they just have feelings, and nothing ever comes of it.
The first time I saw the ending of these trilogy I thought it was a way to change the timeline and make ZZ Gundam not exist (a series I dislike a lot even though I did like some if the later ZZ episodes of the series).
Original anime of nearly 50 episodes, Jaburo, Kilimanjaro, Dakar, cyber newtype Four and Rosamia etc, Z gundam needs all of these parts but movie version omitted too much
I watch these movies simply for revamped animation. The mixture is jarring and gets on my nerves being a huge fan of Zeta. The story is dog shit now too but that’s no secret. At least we get to see Amuro and Char rekindle their love 😍
Ending sucks (at least in my opinion) because in the original anime Kamille literally got brain damage and left with Fa in order to become a doctor but since he doesn't got brain damage he'll probably fight until he died.
The ending in this compilation feels honestly wrong like kamile is meant to be brain dead after zeta but after these movies hes ay okay which he should not be it feels wrong
Mr. Tomino decided to make a new translation because he felt he should be responsible and do something about the nihilistic story he created with the original Z. The New Translation is meant for the people who watched the original Z, not the completely new viewers. Funny fact: Mr. Tomino wanted to finish Gundam and just move on by the time he worked on ZZ. The series was supposed to end with Char, now without his hesitations, taking the lead of pretty much everything. But Sunrise wanted more Gundam because it was earning a lot of money. Mr. Tomino therefore made Char's Counterattack that, to him, was supposed to make Sunrise not want to sell the toys that would represent certain ideals and ideas. Well, shit, it had a complete opposite effect and the series went on to create the Heisei Gundam era. Here's a thing. If you really want to understand what Mr. Tomino wanted to tell through Gundam, where mechs are just backdrops to what he portrays, do yourself a favour and watch Ideon.
Funnily enough, I'm making a video for Turn A and Ideon currently about this very comment. After watching Turn A specifically I completely get why the ending was the way that it was.
I have a opinion that the film it's not bad to me cause im watching all series Gundam , i watch full series of Gundam also watch evlove Gundam and the google so i watch and play full of then , i know you Will bead but , i like the the Zeta so i Will know almost the tragedy of the Gundam , that is my opinion
Those new serier did not has the charms of 70s & 80s anime tv shows from family home entertaiment gumby vhs tape and Japan made 80s cartoon shows such as oringal inseptor Gadget,Dennis the Menace,Tranformers & other shows.
I would recommend the movies over the series for newcomers but watch 35-37 and 41-42 . Zeta suffers more filler than 79 did and the old 80s animation is not going to age well with newcomers. Vs the MSG movies that hardly have a difference.
Honestly they massacred fours story and wish they gave more time to develop it in the movies, really the only reason to watch the movies is to see the newer animation
I just want to start by saying that you're in all your right to don't like it and I respect that, I just don't get why people complain about how "bad they did the pace" We have to consider that they´re basically mashing together 50 episodes, that absolutely will compromise the character development, the order of things and how they happen, but they had to make things cohesive by how fast they had to go. Of course people say "If they were able to do it with '79 why they did not do the same?" For some reason it seems people just ignore how extremely fast the ''79 movies go, not to mention those are 1 hour longer each movie and even though they are longer they also feel like they're running full speed, I watched the origianl 50 episodes of '79 and the movies feel like the White base falls from 1 shitstorm to the next and that it's overwhelming to say the least. With New Translation I felt the changes they did make the store more cohesive FOR SOMEONE WHO WAS NEVER WATCHED ZETA ON A FULL RUN, I loved what they did to explain Emma what the titans were really doing and how they added Lila´s death and made it work by the changes they did, you as someone who works on audiovisual media knows how hard it's to do that and doing that with a series from '85 which pace is not it's biggest strenght, that's amazing in my opinon. The new animation... some people liked it, some people don't and I'm fine with it, Zeta is my favorite series and be able to watch Amuro clashing against the Ashimar full speed not giving a shit if he dies... to me as a fan of Zeta knowing how difficult and expensive animate the Mk II kicking Lila's MS is, I grabbed that as a gift from sunrise. They could just do what they did with 79 and use only old footage but the new animation... man, I loved that, I just loved it. Well we can see New Translation as a newcomer, an old fan and someone who' s very casual with Gundam, people focus too much on the bad stuff but meh, they can do what's best for them, I really liked it but it's just my opinion.
Hmm... Hard disagree. Your whole argument is about comparing it to the TV series. Without that baseline, you wouldn't have any argument to present. You need argue why the movies as a stand alone product (without comparing it to the TV series) are "bad". A lot of these films aren't even meant for existing fans. But rather they are meant for people who have never seen Zeta Gundam before. An entirely new generation. Older fans can watch it of course, but it's not 100% for them.
GUYS I SAID KAMILLE BIDEN AS A JOKE I KNOW HOW HIS NAME IS PRONOUNCED OKAY IM SORRY

On the bright side, this means she probably SURVIVED in the New Translation timeline.
I love tourism justification!
I could feel your love for Gundam.
since the zeta movies follow an alternate path of events the uc timeline seems a lil fucked it looks likekamille will continue being a pilot since he got happier ending at the end of zeta
9:30 Perhaps all one can do to find answers here is to Believe in a Sign of Zeta.
What's the anime at 1:47? Also GREAT VIDEO you deserve way more subs
Thanks for watching! That anime is “Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway”, it recently just came out, and its pretty good!
Is there a fanedit of the series and the films to include the cleaner animation?
Its so weird using old footage and new footage together
Zeta Gundam is too complicated a story to cram into 3 movies !!!
Damn I was half awake when I saw the title and was ready to go all out commenting but then I heard the intro that it was about the compilation film 💀
Are you saying "complaytion"?
They did the Four storyline again in Gundam Seed Destiny with Stella.
IMO when GSD did it was not as good as the ver on the Zeta tv show. Though in fairness that was my problem with GSD they tried too hard to be Zeta.
How do the 0079 movies compare? I've seen the orgrinal series but my friend and I are watching the films
They're pretty good, especially the final film.
That really makes the most sense. OP only compared them Side by Side wich misses the point I feel.
I watched the first compilation last night, and it was terrible. I would continue it but, since I already watched the show, i really don't want to continue it.
Yeah, the first one was really rough to get through. At least the ending was great but it’s so unfortunate how much stuff was just skipped
No, I agree. The English OP with the Z Gundam OST fits so damn well.
On the bright side we got Metamorphoze as the opening for the First film, and that was a banger, agreed though, the English Zeta Gundam is one of my favorite substitute openings in anime
can you make a video on the Origin manga's as well as one regarding your own thoughts on a 0079 remake/ origin Continuation?
Honestly, I don't get the point of compilation films. Why not just make the original series easily accessible?
I will give them this, they gave fa and kamille the happy ending they deserved in the original series
'Kamille Biden'🤣
I just finished zeta and was gonna check this out
guys! treat this as a alternate universe where by Kamil survive the war not as a casulty
Wait, they actually spliced old and new footage for the final battle? I thought that was bad compilation for copyright purposes. WTF
The studio was being greedy and wanted to release it as fast as possible.
i didnt mind it as a rewatch cuz i dont have time to sit through 50 episodes anymore
Saw the series first before jumping into this, I was indeed confused af
I thought his last name was pronounced "Bee-dahn?"
Yeah it was, just pronounced it differently cause I thought it would be funny. I regret it a lot now lol
@@CheemsBased oh ok lol
So the thing was I was already at the point in the series where the zeta Gundam made its first appearance but then when compilation films came out on TH-cam for a little bit I watched them since I was trying to marathon uc and dude I don’t remember anything Lmao (if you were wondering I was watching the show on one of those anime websites the illegal ones lmao)
The reason it doesn't work... is because it should have been FOUR movies instead of three. Four movies would have given plenty of room for everything to breathe and flow organically.
kamille just cant have four
@@engokupengu1771 I see what you did there.
The Kamille scenes in ZZ got me when I saw them.
I've always said Tomino can't write to save his life, but he's a great director and "idea man".
He's the Japanese George Lucas.
Given that Gundam is Japanese starwars the parallel should really be more obvious.
This is a banger fr
I would point out that this is not as bad as Rurouni Kenshin Shin Kyoto Hen but that is like pointing out that Pneumonia is better than Cancer.
they look nice though. did i get any of new translation. but god damn that art looks good
I kind of feel bad for your brother. He really should have given the original TV series of Zeta Gundam a chance.
If asked I tried this move when it came to Zeta and regrettably it was not the best
When I got to the bit where they show the aftermath of the 30 bunch incident through fucking footage instead of actually going to visit it themselves, I just turned off the movie, if they're going to make such an important scene that minor, then what the hell is the point in watching the rest of this?
They remove DAKAR SPEECH
Kamille Biden
There's nooooo way these can be the worst Gundam compilation films. Last Blitz of Zeon exists.
1:34 Okay I was listening along and expected to tab back to a funny joke, but no you just said his name that way.
I don’t remember saying his name like lmao, dunno why I never corrected myself while recording
@@CheemsBased I was expecting a "C'mon man" or "You wanna take this outside Fat?" played over Kamile punching Jerrid.
Easiest way to piss kameal, is to talk about his name
Yeah after watching this I am definitely going to watch the original series.
Yeah i want Zeta A New Translation would be just remake, not compilation movies. Tomino lates for 20 years later
May I ask where you heard this rumour? You've got me interested.
It doesn’t help that they used old footage and new footage together.
The first time I saw the ending of these trilogy I thought it was a way to change the timeline and make ZZ Gundam not exist (a series I dislike a lot even though I did like some if the later ZZ episodes of the series).
Original anime of nearly 50 episodes, Jaburo, Kilimanjaro, Dakar, cyber newtype Four and Rosamia etc, Z gundam needs all of these parts but movie version omitted too much
instead of new translation, they should remake Gundam ZZ first half that reaaally is a pain to watch..
I legit found zeta so hard to follow compared to 0079 at times
I watch these movies simply for revamped animation. The mixture is jarring and gets on my nerves being a huge fan of Zeta. The story is dog shit now too but that’s no secret. At least we get to see Amuro and Char rekindle their love 😍
I was so upset after watching them. Fuck these movies.
Thanks
CCA don't make sense, it destroyed Char as a character, so in my point of view this good ending saves the series
Bruh. I don’t know how you can be so far off on the names. They are all said in the show correctly. And I’m not talking about the Kamile name joke
only watched this cuz updated animation
I have a opinion that the film it's not bad to me cause im watching all series Gundam , i watch full series of Gundam also watch evlove Gundam and the google so i watch and play full of then , i know you Will bead but , i like the the Zeta so i Will know almost the tragedy of the Gundam , that is my opinion
original MSG movies did it better
Those new serier did not has the charms of 70s & 80s anime tv shows from family home entertaiment gumby vhs tape and Japan made 80s cartoon shows such as oringal inseptor Gadget,Dennis the Menace,Tranformers & other shows.
I would recommend the movies over the series for newcomers but watch 35-37 and 41-42 . Zeta suffers more filler than 79 did and the old 80s animation is not going to age well with newcomers. Vs the MSG movies that hardly have a difference.
We'll see.
Nah I honestly think Zeta Gundam looks amazing for a 1985 anime. The pacing is horrendous though.
I like it just for the fact it non canons most of the shit double zeta shit and Kamile gets a better ending
Honestly they massacred fours story and wish they gave more time to develop it in the movies, really the only reason to watch the movies is to see the newer animation
i liked the g reco movies
Kamille "Biden" hahahaha.
I keep waiting for people to notice that lmaooo
Ageeeded movies sucked.. but dang the pv music is good
….Kamille Biden?
Kamille Biden lmfao😂😂😂
