Hi Cap. Taking nothing away from Damp's flying, there has to be something up with the hind's armor. 20mm Cannon doing nothing seems really off to me. Perhaps if you aren't too busy, a test with ground vehicles to see how many rounds of varying caliber it takes to even wound the damn thing? Great vid as always.
That is weird, i feel like ive been shot to bits with a coaxial whilst flying the hind. Also even if we ignore damage it still teaches us about manouverability and wether certain planes can actually be reached by the hind.
Growling Sidewinder had 2 Morons video with him and Longshot in a Huey fighting an AI Hind. The Hind survived a midair with the Huey, which definitely seems questionable.

Mi-24 can dogfight UFO too :D. In 1987 Mi-24 from 51st helicopter squadron of Czechoslovak Air Force dogfight UFO near Austria borders above Vranov dam. Grey, cigar shaped object rapidly changes speed and direction and every time when gunner get it into the sight, object quicky change direction and evade. Crew of Mi-24 were ordered to shoot down unknown object, but they decide to disobey the order, because they were above the beach of the dam lake, full of tourist and swimmers. Mi-24 also start runing out of fuel, so they RTB. Unknown object escaped to the east and above Slovakia turn to south and dissapear above Hungary.
The Hind took off from Shadow Moses Island at night in the middle of the blizzard and shot down the two F-16's that just took off from Galena. It's legendary.
The OV-10D Bronco was designed to be a Hind killer. It had a belly mounted 20mm Vulcan three barreled cannon in a turret that was slaved to a FLIR turret in the nose that could be locked onto the Hind's heat signature. It used practically the same set up as the AH-1W sea cobra.
Actually, the OV-10D was originally designed to be a light attack aircraft able to operate in adverse weather, and there was no requirement for that aircraft to be a chopper hunter, at all.
Flying a prop plane like a a jet is a mistake, that said nitrous oxide fuel injection (the German GM-1 superpower device of WWII) increased the power produced by the engine by a lot over the 50/50 (Methanol-Water) method

Yeah, it’s not anywhere even close to realistic. People can talk about the Afghans and 20mm guns and how indestructible the thing is all day, but the bottom line is they can still be destroyed IRL, and like you mentioned, being shot to hell (esp in the rotor hub) from directly above would certainly mess up the Hind’s day. Another commenter already mentioned it, but GS and Longshot flew a freaking Huey into the side of the Hind in a midair collision, and it was fine. 🤣 and yet still, you have armchair aviators on here talking about “well the Huey wasn’t that solid.” HIND = BROKEN DAMAGE MODEL.
Hello, Well normally I really enjoy all your sims, but this one I have some questions. The tactics, so as you put it, your "safe zone" is at a high elevation above the MIL..... correct? Well, would a better tactic, especially with the Mosquito, spitfire and the Mustang would be to go to Angels 20 plus dive on the Mil but set a hard deck angels 3 above the MIL dive down and pull up before you get in the range of the Mil angle of attack? Never go head to head or in a turn battle.... These three planes are very fast and can climb very well BTW during WWII my dad was with 418 squadron - Mosquito 438 squadron - Typhoon, spitfire and Hurricane 432 squadron - Lancasters, Wellington and Halifax Please redo these using tactics that use the advantages of the various aircraft. If you do I bet that the outcome would be the opposite of this video Roy

Low and slow rate fights with a helicopter, and you are in for a bad day at the office every time. I was waiting for more boom and zoom, dive and climb. Growling Sidewinder doing this vs a Hind would be fun.
The way you did it with the I-16 looks about right. Using the vertical doesn't mean doing half-hearted loops. Climb like you usually would, it's the easiest and most sustainable way of getting any amount of altitude. There's no use in running a huge distance away either, I would put the bad guy on my 90 at an arms length to keep an eye on him until I have built enough turning room in the vertical. Once you go down, you need to lead almost like a missile, the closer you get the harder it is to pull your nose into him because of increasing line of sight rates and he has the better turning capability. Now that you mention, there's a 60 seconds long demo on how to beat the AI MiG-15 in a modern jet on my channel now. I recorder a warbird edition with heavy loadout and no afterburner as well but didn't upload it as the poor AI lost sight and gave up just I was about to come down on him. I need to revisit it later against a harder target.
Peacefully plowing soviet tractor has been attacked by enemy forces today. The tractor took off and after destroying all of the enemies returned to base.😂
Also consider, with all this turning and burning, the Hind has mounts for 2 door gunners. Further, hard to say if it was happening, but helicopters can fly backwards and hover.. no need to try and push forward into turns.
Even if the Hind could mount door gunners, the angle, and position of its stub wings would make it very hard for the door gunners to fire their weapons. So, if you want add door gunners in a fight, then you would to switch to the Hip, instead.
It's too bad there isn't a Northrop P-61 Black Widow in DCS. Twin engine reliability, 4 20 Mike Mike's in the belly, and 4 12.7 Mike Mike's in the top turret. You can shoot forwards, From the sides and to the rear. JUST THINKING THAT SOMEONE SHOULD RECOMMEND ADDING THIS AIRCRAFT TO DCS WORLD !!!!!
While the Hind would prove a challenging opponent, WW2 fighters still hold a decisive advantage-the ability to engage and disengage from the fight at will-. It might be challenging to achieve a shootdown but it would be even more challenging for a wing of Hinds to accomplish their mission facing this sort of harassment. You might see a lot of indecisive fights but that would not bode well for the Hind if it keeps getting mission killed because a pair of Spitfires show up.
@@ObsydianShade The problem is the speed gap. A hind is still very fast. in fact it can almost keep up with an average warbird. It stays in the shadow of the aircraft, forcing it into a near vertical dive, which is almost impossible to recover from so close to the ground. a competently flown hind plays to all of the weaknesses of the warbird, and grants very few strengths to the platform.
@@dampsok It's capped at around 200mph which it puts in it pretty far behind most warbirds actually. The P-40's max speed at 15,000ft was 334mph but even if we're conservative and knock that down 30mph the P-40 still has a comfortable margin over the Hind. Even the PZL P.11 was faster. But in order to fight the Hind has to maneuver too and it will most certainly burn its kinetic energy faster than a warbird will trying to fight it out. It's not a harmless enemy by any stretch-but there's a reason a variant of the lowly OV-10 Bronco exists just to hunt it.

Anyway just want to say how amazing Damp's flying was - minus one tree flinging the Hind around like that for that long and not loosing control is very very impressive, not to mention actually managing to get shots on target! I think the USAF did an exercise where it put its fighters up against attack helicopters - their conclusion was similar - avoid getting into engagements with them. I realise the SFMs have to be quite simple for computational reasons but they could really do with some updating - i.e. so they do stall etc... it kind of makes a mockery of all the excellent flight PFMs when the SFMs can get away with the impossible.
Biggest mistake was trying to rate fight a helicopter, it's super easy to do the vulture loitering and then attack since the plane doesn't vibrate like a warbird. But putting 2 missiles that you aren't using, pulling a lot on the stick to match the rate of a helicopter and bleeding tremendous amounts of speed due to excessive aoa and the fact that the sfm needs work is exactly why the hind shreded it to pieces. Side note: since we all know it's a mod, why not use the rudder more? It turns like a car with it.

The Hind wasn't "cast" as champion for this vid... I'm very sure that Cap and Simba wanted to give me the pounding that I should have recieved... I just didn't make it easy for them... the Hind was definitely the underdog in a lot of these fights.
Unfortunately almost everyone played in the Hind's arena (a horizontal turning game). The Hind could not easily shoot upwards, which means correctly performing boom & zoom dives would have eventually led to victory. The primary mistake in most of these attempts was starting the attacks from a far too low altitude. Start them much higher so you have plenty of time to dive, adjust your aiming point, fire, and pull up ideally without ever crossing into the Hind's firing arc.
Should have done a few low speed passes on a stationary, hovering Hind to test the 20mm and larger rounds. With Cap's aptitude for deflection shooting, no offense, this could have gone on for hours without definitive answers.
You are not helped by TH-cam's compression algorithm either that makes small stuff in background blend in. Higher resolution like 1080p vs 4k can help... But it doesn't fix it.
You see the same thing when it's modern jets vs warbirds. I'm pretty sure the people flying the jets know that they should boom and zoom because they'll never win a turn fight, but for some reason they always seem to get suckered into dogfighting in a a way that negates their advantages.
Great video, guys, also, I've got two questions for you: #1- How did you capture the sound of the Junkets Jumo-211 engine that powered the FW-190D-9?, And #2- Can you do a video of Hawg Vs. Hind? I'd love to see how that fight would go!
Hmmm, was very excited to see this but... A helicopter gunship is a turret in the sky, but most of these matches the plane just flew in a circle at the same height and let the Hind shoot it down, instead of getting altitude ABOVE the hind and DIVING down onto it. Rematch please!!! :) And since GR don't usually just fly straight into the ground when strafing slow moving ground targets, it should not be happening here either just sayin' (spitfire, etc.).
In the Mosquito, were you firing both sets of guns at once? WRT feathering: once it has stopped, you can't feather it. They need undamaged propeller gearbox system and a spinning shaft.
Idea for a video: use your best pilots/historians/experts to match warbirds with their closest contemporary counterparts. For example, based on historical numbers/performance, what's the closest warbird in relation the F-4, F-16, F-15, Eurofighter, A-10, B-52, Mig's, SU's. You could just pick your favorites from any era really and match them up for fun and see if there are any odd results such as helicopter versus warbird (guns only in all cases). Based on pure number of kills in WWII, would you rank a BF-109 as the modern hypothetical result of large scale F-22 production (in other words, the most deadly fighter of its day). Another method would be the direct historical trace back in time of the evolution of fighters/bombers, such as the specific generations of planes and progression of effectiveness; what generation of aircraft between the west and the Soviet Union/Russia were superior to the equivalent. Just a thought. :)
Someone really needs to teach you how to fly the DCS P-47 Cap. Because for some reason you are still calling it unmanuverable. If you fly it right she can out turn even 109's. She has a Double Wasp Engine. She has the HP to get fast and stay there.. Fly her right. By keeping her fast. and the 47 turn, and zoom climb rather well.
I was, it is just difficult to see. The killshot on Simba's Mosquito was a 30mm shot to the spine of the aircraft. You can see the damage through the blasted through bomb bay.
Cap this might help with your rudder pedals. With most pc rudder pedals the sensors read your pedal movement and it is 2 to 4 times stronger than the same travel in real life. I see my curve as something like this for rudder pedals 0,0,1,1,2,4,8,16,32,64,82,100. Adjust as necessary for different aircraft.
It helps way more to put a hydraulic damper on the pedals. It keeps you from overshooting your desired yaw and from overcorrecting. I have one on my MFG crosswind pedals and it helps a ton.
@@jake4194 The 4 bladed rotors on the hind were very long and flexible, during High G maneuvers its rotors would actually flex and hit the tail section. It is a well known problem and forced the Soviet army to limit the use during Afghanistan particularly when being engaged with a stinger. They also had similar issues during take off, that were fixed with a rolling take off. Like anything Soviet, the Hind was a very flawed weapon system. A deathtrap really, deathtrap for its own crew.
Why didn't you use the "ataka" guided missiles on mi-24 for dogfight?) Petrovich can show some of his skills in air-to-air combat as well, but you didn't give him a chance to do it! So I request one more dogfight with missiles onboard)
Need to use a SBD or Dauntless with tail gunner? What about a B25? Every angel covered is this fight to kill the Helo. Simba had to crashes from crashing into the ground? Maneuver killed in a Mustang?

The Hind wasn't "cast" as champion for this vid... I'm very sure that Cap and Simba wanted to give me the pounding that I should have recieved... I just didn't make it easy for them... the Hind was definitely the underdog in a lot of these fights.
Unfortunately almost everyone played in the Hind's arena (a horizontal turning game). The Hind could not easily shoot upwards, which means correctly performing boom & zoom dives would have eventually led to victory. The primary mistake in most of these attempts was starting the attacks from a far too low altitude. Start them much higher so you have plenty of time to dive, adjust your aiming point, fire, and pull up ideally without ever crossing into the Hind's firing arc.

Should have done a few low speed passes on a stationary, hovering Hind to test the 20mm and larger rounds. With Cap's aptitude for deflection shooting, no offense, this could have gone on for hours without definitive answers.

You are not helped by TH-cam's compression algorithm either that makes small stuff in background blend in.
Higher resolution like 1080p vs 4k can help... But it doesn't fix it.

You see the same thing when it's modern jets vs warbirds. I'm pretty sure the people flying the jets know that they should boom and zoom because they'll never win a turn fight, but for some reason they always seem to get suckered into dogfighting in a a way that negates their advantages.
they dont have much choice and if they do a higher altitude dogfight, b&z is more affective

Hmmm, was very excited to see this but... A helicopter gunship is a turret in the sky, but most of these matches the plane just flew in a circle at the same height and let the Hind shoot it down, instead of getting altitude ABOVE the hind and DIVING down onto it. Rematch please!!! :) And since GR don't usually just fly straight into the ground when strafing slow moving ground targets, it should not be happening here either just sayin' (spitfire, etc.).
Having had Hinds sent after me, might I recommend throwing EVERYTHING, including the kitchensink, at it in the real world?

WRT feathering: once it has stopped, you can't feather it. They need undamaged propeller gearbox system and a spinning shaft.

Cap, you should put those drag-inducing flaps up when you are climbing and not engaged in turning work.
Try it with a B-25 Michell with a 75mm howitzer in the nose VS the Hind-D.
Idea for a video: use your best pilots/historians/experts to match warbirds with their closest contemporary counterparts. For example, based on historical numbers/performance, what's the closest warbird in relation the F-4, F-16, F-15, Eurofighter, A-10, B-52, Mig's, SU's. You could just pick your favorites from any era really and match them up for fun and see if there are any odd results such as helicopter versus warbird (guns only in all cases). Based on pure number of kills in WWII, would you rank a BF-109 as the modern hypothetical result of large scale F-22 production (in other words, the most deadly fighter of its day). Another method would be the direct historical trace back in time of the evolution of fighters/bombers, such as the specific generations of planes and progression of effectiveness; what generation of aircraft between the west and the Soviet Union/Russia were superior to the equivalent. Just a thought. :)

Someone really needs to teach you how to fly the DCS P-47 Cap. Because for some reason you are still calling it unmanuverable. If you fly it right she can out turn even 109's. She has a Double Wasp Engine. She has the HP to get fast and stay there.. Fly her right. By keeping her fast. and the 47 turn, and zoom climb rather well.

I was, it is just difficult to see. The killshot on Simba's Mosquito was a 30mm shot to the spine of the aircraft. You can see the damage through the blasted through bomb bay.

Cap this might help with your rudder pedals. With most pc rudder pedals the sensors read your pedal movement and it is 2 to 4 times stronger than the same travel in real life. I see my curve as something like this for rudder pedals
0,0,1,1,2,4,8,16,32,64,82,100. Adjust as necessary for different aircraft.
It helps way more to put a hydraulic damper on the pedals. It keeps you from overshooting your desired yaw and from overcorrecting. I have one on my MFG crosswind pedals and it helps a ton.

Try 3 fully crewed Hueys vs. 1 Hind... My money is still on the Hind... It's incredibly tough.

Watching this got me wondering how a compound helicopter like the Lockheed AH-56 Cheyenne would do in a scenario like this?
In real life the Hind would have chopped its tail off in these maneuvers way before any of the war birds had to worry about damage.

@@jake4194 The 4 bladed rotors on the hind were very long and flexible, during High G maneuvers its rotors would actually flex and hit the tail section. It is a well known problem and forced the Soviet army to limit the use during Afghanistan particularly when being engaged with a stinger. They also had similar issues during take off, that were fixed with a rolling take off. Like anything Soviet, the Hind was a very flawed weapon system. A deathtrap really, deathtrap for its own crew.
