There are a lot of levels to this song. One of the interesting ones to me is that he's using the chord progression from Pachabel's Canon in D, a classical piece I'm sure you;ve heard at weddings and other places. It's a long running thing in pop music and rock that something about that progression people always love and it's almost a cheat code for writing a hit song.
I can't be at a wedding without breaking into the "suck it in..." part while the bride is walking down the aisle. The part right before that BT seriously dials in Canon, so every time I hear it I can't help it.

Blues Traveler performed with Dan Akroyd and John Goodman on Roseanne many years ago. This was around the time Goodman and Akroyd got together for a 2nd Blues Brothers movie
There’s another channel that did a deep dive on this song. It’s not just the lyrics, it’s the musical arrangement too in that song that’s a trick, using pachelbel canon to tickle our brains with familiarity, etc. Worth a watch.
I first saw the Blues Travelers on TV in the late 80's. It may have been an SNL appearance. It was something like that late at night. I was living by White Rock Lake in Dallas. I became an instant fan. I never understood why they didn't become more popular. I went and found a cassette the next day. When CD's came out I went and bought those too. Great band.
Yes, it’s the “hook” - so smart. The politician you see is a call back to “Citizen Cane” (epic 1941 film about politics and media). We just listen to the hook and believe it (think about headlines and click bait today.)
I've had Hook in my Top5 songs all time since the 90s. It's crazy on so many levels -singing, verse & lyrics, beat, melodies, all of it - its been a GenX warning track since forever... Welcome to it BP! Love your stuff man
I'm bookin' a ticket! I saw Blues Traveler open for The Allman Brothers Band at Red Rocks sometime in the early 90s. One of the best concerts I've attended. A-maze-balls.

This song is still on my playlist rotation. It was a massive hit and a lot of us knew what they were talking about. Still true to this day. Super talented band who never got as big as they should have.
I still remember when they did a cameo on Roseanne in 1995 as Dan's former bandmates and had him sing Sweet Home Chicago then the show closed with them playing hook and it was when I was just getting into alternative/indie rock style music and BT were steady rotation on MTV and the local radio stations. Still an amazing song when he gets going fast in the verse.
Thank you for reacting to this. I'm 50+ and feel you on MTV and others shows hypnotizing us kids. Like I heard an adult say at a family reunion: "Turn the TV on and let it babysit the kids". So I awoke to his message here on your show. So again Thank You Thank You

There's an entire story behind this amazing song & video!! Enjoy!!
Telling someone to not listen to the lyrics is actually insane. There are so many songs out there with lyrics that clash entirely with the vibe of the instruments, and that's the entire point of the song.
Right. When I was younger all the girls loved You're All I Need by Motley Crue because it was so sweet and romantic. But, seriously, listen to the lyrics.
I love the 90s throwback. This is the music I grew up listening to. I love it!!! And btw, the whole reason I subscribe to your channel is because I love that you get into my lyrics. I have done that with music since I was younger. I love listening to music that means something. So never apologize for that, because the whole reason I love your channel!!
I love it when a singer/musician sounds like their instrument.. Popper with the Harmonica & Masego with the saxophone are the two that stick out to me. Love this song, no 90s-hit playlist is complete without it! Appreciate the reaction
Blues Traveler was everywhere back in the day. The lead singer even did the (updated, later seasons) theme song for the show Roseanne. I would honestly be surprised if you hadn't heard this song somewhere. Their music has shown up in a lot of movies and shows. And I hear them all the time on the Grocery Rock Radio, as we call it in my family -- the music playing at the store that all feels like it is meant to make us sad because it is now considered "oldies."
John Popper is actually a really good dude. He bought me a bunch of whiskey while doing karaoke at a bowling alley /bar/casino in Bothell Washington. Probably not the best idea after I got my first tattoo.

[Verse 1]
It doesn't matter what I say
So long as I sing with inflection
That makes you feel I'll convey
Some inner truth or vast reflection
But I've said nothing so far
And I can keep it up for as long as it takes
And it don't matter who you are
If I'm doing my job, it's your resolve that breaks
[Hook]
Because the Hook brings you back
I ain't tellin' you no lie
The Hook brings you back
On that you can rely
[Verse 2]
There is something amiss
I am being insincere
In fact I don't mean any of this
Still my confession draws you near
To confuse the issue I'll refer
To familiar heroes from long ago
No matter how much Peter loved her
What made the Pan refuse to grow
[Hook]
Was that the hook that brings you back
I ain't telling you no lie
The hook brings you back
On that you can rely
[Instrumental]
[Verse 3]
Suck it in, suck it in, suck it in
If you're Rin Tin Tin or Anne Boleyn
Make a desperate move or else you'll win
And then begin to see what you're doing to me
This MTV is not for free
It's so PC it's killing me
So, desperately, I sing to thee of love
Sure, but also of rage and hate and pain and fear of self
And I can't keep these feelings on the shelf
I've tried -- well, no, in fact, I lied
Could be financial suicide but I've got too much pride inside
To hide or slide I'll do as I'll decide
And let it ride until I've died
And only then shall I abide this tide
Of catchy little tunes
Of hip three minute ditties
I wanna bust all your balloons
I wanna burn all of your cities to the ground
I've found I will not mess around
Unless I play, then hey, I will go on all day
Hear what I say, I have a prayer to pray
That's really all this was
And when I'm feeling stuck and need a buck
I don't rely on luck because
[Hook]
The hook brings you back
I ain't telling you no lie
The hook
On that you can rely
Thanks. 🥂

Blues Traveler performed with Dan Akroyd and John Goodman on Roseanne many years ago. This was around the time Goodman and Akroyd got together for a 2nd Blues Brothers movie
My favorite blues traveler song The Mountain Wins Again.
There’s another channel that did a deep dive on this song. It’s not just the lyrics, it’s the musical arrangement too in that song that’s a trick, using pachelbel canon to tickle our brains with familiarity, etc. Worth a watch.
John Popper is among the most accomplished harmonica players (harmonicist?) ever.
John popper is a piece of work. His voice and harmonica skills are huge🤘❤️
GOAT video. Watched it every hour when it was on MTV like Black Hole Sun by Sound Garden.
Such an underrated band! The Mountain Wins Again...great song!
Congrats to you and the wifey on inducing day!! 😀
11:06 that high note he hits on the harmonica gives me chills every time
I first saw the Blues Travelers on TV in the late 80's. It may have been an SNL appearance. It was something like that late at night. I was living by White Rock Lake in Dallas. I became an instant fan. I never understood why they didn't become more popular. I went and found a cassette the next day. When CD's came out I went and bought those too. Great band.
"RUN-AROUND" is the most played song of Blues Traveler on Classic Radio.
Song and this man blew me away when I first heard them….still do.
This is absolutely one of the best songs ever written for so many reasons.
Good song congratulations to you and your wifie with the new healthy baby 👍
Blues Brothers 2000. Thats probably where you remember him.
Yes, it’s the “hook” - so smart. The politician you see is a call back to “Citizen Cane” (epic 1941 film about politics and media). We just listen to the hook and believe it (think about headlines and click bait today.)
I was waiting for the Citizen Kane reference. 👍🏾🇺🇦
I've had Hook in my Top5 songs all time since the 90s. It's crazy on so many levels -singing, verse & lyrics, beat, melodies, all of it - its been a GenX warning track since forever... Welcome to it BP! Love your stuff man
I recommend you attend a Blues Traveler concert in person at Red Rocks next July 4th. The venue makes it extra special.
Yup, saw them at the Orange Peel in Asheville.❤
I'm bookin' a ticket! I saw Blues Traveler open for The Allman Brothers Band at Red Rocks sometime in the early 90s. One of the best concerts I've attended. A-maze-balls.
That entire album is amazing, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND literally every song.
FYI the gentleman who is sing with John is Paul Shaffer who severed as David Letterman’s music director and band leader from 1982 until 2015 when they both retired from The Tonight Show. Love your work and thank you
I thought that was him. I was checking the comments just to see if somebody mentions it.
If you really want to trip out, did you know Paul Shaffer co wrote The Weather Girls, It’s Raining Men.
Always hilarious to me because he is stiff.
@@jw70467 no i didn't know that. That's funny
This was their most successful song on the charts. It worked, they knew what they were doing.
I'm 54 years old, listen to a lot of music and I feel like certain songs were actually messages for today.
I am 46 years old
Played guitar for 30 years
Piano for 5 years
I was teenager in '90s
I FORGOT ABOUT THIS SONG!!
Excellent
Thanks Pegasus🙏
Don’t forget Run Around! Just put that album on right now.
@@fortunated_5764 Oh I did
I listened to it start to finish yesterday.
I now consider it a "hidden gem" from the '90s. EXCELLENT
Carolina Blues is another one by Blues Traveler that is well worth a listen
Straight On Till Morning ... the whole album is straight MASTERWORK.
First time I heard Blues Traveler was when he was guest star on Roseanne. I fell in love with his music because it was raw and unique.
My wife and I saw them live here in LaGrange, GA, last summer. They were flawless. They are an amazing improvisation band.
This song is still on my playlist rotation. It was a massive hit and a lot of us knew what they were talking about. Still true to this day.
Super talented band who never got as big as they should have.
First time seeing your reviews - NOT the last. You NAILED this song - absolutely nailed it. The message, the method, the intent...
One of the best songs ever written in my opinion. It has never gotten old i love it ever time
You are listening with your Dad Ears. Say What. Love your channel
I've seen Blues Traveler live more times than I can count and it never disappoints! Try the Mountains Win Again.
“The Mountains Win Again” is one of my favs from them.
Yes! That one and “Sweet Pain” are my favorite BT tunes!
Thank you for reacting to this. I'm 50+ and feel you on MTV and others shows hypnotizing us kids. Like I heard an adult say at a family reunion: "Turn the TV on and let it babysit the kids". So I awoke to his message here on your show. So again Thank You Thank You
At 6:30 in. ... reference to the movie Citizen Kane. One of the all time greatest movies. John Popper & Blues Traveler is pure genius. Watch the video of "Run-Around". You will LOVE it! In addition to the incredible musicianship & lyrics.. Pay attention to the video.... Think The Wizard of Oz. Toto accidently reveals what's really behind the curtain. There's an entire story behind this amazing song & video!! Enjoy!!
I just love any reaction to this song that ACTUALLY understands what's going on the whole time
Telling someone to not listen to the lyrics is actually insane. There are so many songs out there with lyrics that clash entirely with the vibe of the instruments, and that's the entire point of the song.
Right. When I was younger all the girls loved You're All I Need by Motley Crue because it was so sweet and romantic. But, seriously, listen to the lyrics.
You just described ska music. Happy dance music with lyrics about social unrest, racial divides, and class warfare.
My personal favorite by them...."the mountains win again". Just beautiful.
I love how he tells you you’re gonna love it right in the song :)
The 90s were more than just grunge. Loved it.😊
They have some good music
You should definitely do Run Around by these guys…you will love the lyrics and how they interplay with the wizard of Oz theming of the video.
Great, now I'll have this song in my head for DAYS! Good thing it's such a great song. It's the earwormiest earworm that ever earwormed. Hook, indeed!
I love it when a singer/musician sounds like their instrument.. Popper with the Harmonica & Masego with the saxophone are the two that stick out to me. Love this song, no 90s-hit playlist is complete without it! Appreciate the reaction
They did a live cover of No Woman No Cry with Ziggy Marley. Well worth a listen.
Hell yeah!
Oh yeah!
Blue's traveler is fucking mind blowing live! Literally toched my soul and made me feel like I wasted my life and talent
Literally no one knows your music, but your takes on other artists are entertaining.
Blue traveler has an appearance in the blues. Brothers, 2000 movie blue traveler, they rock.
