The song was written by Bernie Taupin about his girlfriend who traveled with the band and was all of the above. Bernie writes the songs, Elton writes the music and performs them.
When I was eighteen I lived on my own and worked in a office in Phoenix, ( this was in the 70s) I had been working hard on a big project and was handing it over the next day, I only had some minor repairs but I knew I was going to take my time on it...I stopped on my way home to have a relaxing dinner and run ideas through my head, someone started playing the piano and I closed my eyes only opening them to take notes..when I looked up Elton John was standing there, I knew my face was showing no this isn't real you are working way to hard!! He asked if he could join me, of course I said yes!! The restaurant wasn't too busy, we talked about a lot of things, he asked if I was going to his concert that night and I explained what I had to do in the morning so I was unable to attend!! He asked me about my dreams, my job, my friends and I asked him about living life on the road and what does he do when home..I told him of the many bands I've met and partied with two and three years ago ( the 70s were a different time) I told him my mom knew what I was doing and where I was going and how she reassured my father she knew, I was protected and I was safe, we both had a good laugh about that!! I never asked for his autograph, I treated him as a friend I haven't seen in a while and we just talked!! He got up to leave and told me he really enjoyed our talking and having dinner together, I asked him if it was ok that I pay for his meal as a thank you for the enjoyment he brings to many and for just being a normal guy who didn't want to be a superstar at that moment!! Before I left the waitress came over with a paper for me that he signed to me thanking me for letting him enjoy a great meal!! I still have that framed and hanging in my house, I wish I could put a screenshot up on here for everyone to see!! Anyone my age knows and would tell you we lived differently in the 70s, we partied with people who have become extremely famous, we knew when and how to keep our mouth shut, we lived for the moment not the Instagram or tictoc shot, we loved, laughed, partied and enjoyed great conversations even if our conversations were strange because of something we just smoked!! People my age would tell you, we are the lucky ones, we grew up with the greatest music, greatest friends and freedom that so many others will never experience in a lifetime, I can say without a doubt I lived the greatest teenage years, with parents who loved, trusted me and allowed me the freedom to spread my wings and always come to them about anything!! Hopefully others my age will back me up about how lucky we were and the experiences we lived and survived through!!😂
@@carolinagallegos3926 This was an amazing story 👏🏽. I was a little girl in the 70's ( GEN-X) but I remember the vibe at the time and wishing I was a teenager so I could hangout with the Cool Kids!

Had good friends that the husband lost his wife to Parkinsons disease, and this was her song played at the funeral. Could not have been more appropriate for the two of them. He followed her only a few years latter with cancer. He remarried for a small time but she was his real and only love in this world. They loved rock and roll music.
I grew up with this song in the 70s, but Almost Famous is one of my all time favorite movies & whenever I hear this song now, I associate it with that great bus scene.
Elton did a beautiful song on Marilyn Monroe.. Candle in the wind… then changed a few words to sing it for Princess Diana as they were great friends. 😢😢😢❤❤❤
I first heard this song when I was working at a movie theater and we had the movie "Almost Famous"! I fell in love with it so hard that I'd take breaks at the time they did it in the movie and just watched it! So amazing!
@@danielshea518 Me too! There was a girl who worked with me who loved that scene too that I had alreadt totally fallen for but just sitting there watching the movie scene with her was freaking magic!
@nathanclarke2777 - I worked for a band that toured, and that scene gave me so many feels. When you are trapped in a space with the same people every day, you deal with the good, bad, and the ugly, but the mutual love music and the shows brings it all full circle, and that's what that scene is all about.
Then take a listen to the album it came from. Madman across the water. I first heard it age eight in 1971. Been a fan ever since. Not just the musical talent, his unique and beautiful vocal tone. After Elvis came The Beatles, then came Elton John. After that it was Michael Jackson. Giants of music through the 50s to 70s. Blessed to be a teen through those years. The music of then is still with me in my 60s and it's really lovely that young people are discovering the greats. Cheers.
Tiny Dancer, a 1971 timeless classic. Another Bernie taupin masterpiece about his fiance at the time. With Elton just print a list of his songs and throw a dart at it. You'll never fail to get a good one. I do recommend his cover of the Who's Pinball Wizard or his duet with Kiki Dee, Don't go breaking my Heart
Elton John burst on the scene in the early 1970s. He became a phenomenon. Elton John, and Bernie Taupin wrote all the early songs. Bernie, lyrics, Elton, music. The entire Madman Across The Water is an incredible album. You should enjoy the album in private, just to experience the pure genius of both Elton John, and Bernie Taupin.
Bernie Taupin did all of the lyrical writing for Elton's songs. Elton wrote the music. The team is one of the most prolific in history. When this song was written in 1971/72 Elton was sleeping with women and likely men. He told Rolling Stone in an interview in the mid-70's he was bisexual. In the 80's it was becoming more clear that he was gay but he did not fully acknowledge being gay until the early 90's. But this song being written by Bernie is about his girlfriend at the time.
The visuals on this video are just so incongruent to the song to me, but of course I've heard it with my imagination and having gone through the 70s that I've got my own movie, right? One of his all time best songs.
He has so many great hits that you could play his music all day, and you might only find three you don't like. I would place him in my top 10 favorite musicians of all time.
Let’s say Elton and Bernie have countless hits through the decades, they like the Beatles are in a class of their own. This is from one of my most favorite albums “Mad Man Across the Water”, hope you check out Levon sometime. B.P. remember, Bernie writes the lyrics, so it’s based mostly on his experience. Thanks 👍💕
When it comes to Elton John's songs, all the lyrics were written by Bernie Taupin, and the music was always written by Elton. The majority of their hirs were "loosely" based on Bernie's life experiences.
Elton brings the piano to life like nobody I've ever heard. He dominated Record Sales Worldwide in the Mid 70s the same way Taylor Swift does now. Get well soon Elton - hope your eyesight gets fully restored soon.
@@guystephens2881 No I don't - how many ex boyfriends does she have to write songs about. Just because she writes her own songs it doesn't make them any good.
This song is just one of so many that I love. Almost every song Elton sings was written by Master Songwriter/Storyteller Bernie Taupin. They became collaboraters going back to the 1960's, collaborating on 30+ albums. They've been songwriting partners for over 50+ years & Elton publically stated at his 60th birthday celebration that "withoutTaupin there probably would not be an 'Elton John' as the public has come to know him." Bernie's contribution to songwriting wasn't limited to Elton, he's also written songs for other artists including Alice Cooper, Heart, Starship, Willie Nelson, Kid Rock, Courtney Love, Brian Wilson and more. Elton and Bernie are still writing together and have no plans to stop anytime soon, as stated on a recent appearance on CBS Mornings. Bernie is, in my opinion, one of the greatest songwriters/storytellers ever! And Elton .... what can you say about one of the greatest singers to ever exist. He's simply amazing!!
I can't believe there are people that have never heard this. It came out years before I was born but has always been my favorite Elton John song. I was a weird teen who had classic rock mixed in with my 90s grunge. 😆 I was able to see him play live for my 23rd birthday which was amazing.
I'm sure others have chimed in, but Elton didn't write lyrics (he wrote all the music though). His long time lyricist and best friend is a guy named Bernie Taupin who wrote this about his girlfriend and the time they spent in California while on tour with Elton in the early 70s. My favorite line is about watching the piano man making his "stand". I like it so much because Elton is singing Bernie's words about watching his girlfriend watching Elton (the words she knows, the tune she hums). It is so deliciously circular. Their collaboration is quite unusual in that they don't write together. Bernie basically writes lots of poems. He then gives them to Elton, who sifts through them and picks one and then puts it to music. They were incredibly prolific in the 70s. I seem to recall it being said that they wrote and recorded the entire (double) Goodbye Yellow Brick Road in about 3 weeks. Which is crazy!!
Do you know the songwriting process for Elton. Bernie Taupen writes lyrics and then Elton John writes the music. He has said that he cannot write music unless he has lyrics first. Also, fascinatingly, they are never in the same room while composing. Just brilliant! I enjoy watching you react and figure out the songs I took for granted as a kid. I also appreciate that you are bringing this great music to a new audience. Nice work, man!
“Tiny Dancer” was inspired by Bernie Taupin’s girlfriend, who was a seamstress and traveled with Elton and Bernie on tour. However, the song’s lyrics are more of an ode to youth, love, and freedom than a specific tribute to one person.
Background and writing With lyrics written by Bernie Taupin, the song was first featured as the opening track to John's 1971 album, Madman Across the Water. The song's lyrics were inspired by Taupin's first visit to the US in 1970, and were intended to capture the spirit of California, where he found the women he met highly contrasted with those whom he had known in his home country of England.[3][4][5][6] Taupin also stated in a 1973 interview in Rolling Stone that the song is about Maxine Feibelman, his wife at the time.[7] In 2019, Feibelman said, "I knew [the song] was about me. I had been into ballet as a little girl and sewed patches on Elton's jackets and jeans",[8] referring to the song's description of a "seamstress for the band".
@12:06 The main song that created so many questions for Elton John was, "Daniel." When brought the song originally Elton crossed out the third verse of the song, and the third verse explained the song. David LaChapelle is credited for best "explaining" what the Daniel song was about through the video in Vegas.
This is one of his best. Elton John was so big in the 70's and a huge part of our childhood and teenage years, couldn't imagine my youth without his great music.
In my opinion “Madman Across the Water” was the best album that Elton John ever made. I loved every song I heard from it. “Your Song” is my favorite song from him and it is on that album.
I love this song. Watch the movie Almost Famous...it brought back my appreciation for the song and Elton John. Great movie and great music!! Elton John has a wealth of talent and a massive catalog of great music! Thank you for the reaction!!
Elton John and Bernie Taupin(lyricist) mostly worked independently and this seemed to work for production of Elton's songs. Bernie's ex was his inspiration & muse as the "seamstress for the band"(though she wasn't officially) and she loved to dance when she was a child also. thanks for sharing Black Pegasus :)
I give young people lists of music to listen to. I stop at about 15 and the remember another 50 more. We 70 year Olds grew up in the Garden Of Eden of Music
Another very good song written by Bernie Taupin is "These Dreams" and performed by the band "HEART" only this time it was sung by Ann's sister Nancy..The song went to #1 back in the l1980's...Their first #1 hit..
Candle in the wind, good song. He also reworded for his dear friend Princess Diane at her funeral. Elton is crazy good. Also have you reacted to Ozzie Osbournes...Ordinary man? Like to see you do Ozzie. Love your channel! ❤
Yes, that was Marilyn Manson, Britney Spears, Iris Karina and many more. This video was put together very well. This song. Is absolutely legendary. Incredible, intelligent & beautiful. Thank you for taking the time. =)
Background and writing Taupin also stated in a 1973 interview in Rolling Stone that the song is about Maxine Feibelman, his wife at the time. In 2019, Feibelman said, "I knew [the song] was about me.
Early Elton and Bernie are AMAZING! Anything from the Yellow Brick Road album is a winner IMHO. Try "Funeral for a Friend" but play it through with "Love Lies Bleeding", they are technically seperate songs but always get played together. Pure musical genius.
This was written around 1970 by Elton & Bernie Taupin, who wrote nearly all of the lyrics to Elton's early stuff. This song video is much more recent than the song itself. The song is about Elton & Bernie's first experience of L.A. & about the girl who was a 'seamstress' for his band, who had been a ballet dancer. She married Bernie the writer, so it was personal.
Simply beautiful - if this track doesn't make you feel something you must have a brick where your heart should be. Bernie Taupin weaves his magic, tells you a story - then Elton John gives you a Piano melody, arranges everything around it to maximum effect & suddenly you find yourself wishing your Mother/Father/Sister/Brother/Friend was still here & you would give everything you own just to be able to talk to them for a while. Powerful, powerful stuff. Love your stuff, keep up the good work. Love & Respect from the UK.
I love...Candle in the Wind...about Marylin Monroe. He was drawn to her. He's representing her in the video. Later Sir (dubbed by the Queen) redone Candle in the wind for Princess Diana's funeral!!
The idea of a Tiny Dancer is referring to how society moves through their days, taking one step at a time. The challenges and barriers we all face and how we deal with it.
To understand the true brilliance of the Elton John/Bernie Taupin song writing duo, you really need to listen to the deep cuts. The songs that got radio play were great, don’t misunderstand me. But the songs that never made to radio, but were listened to, and absorbed by, millions of fans are definitely worth listening to.
Elton’s best album in MHO is Goodbye yellow brick road, mid 70’s albums were complete start to finish hits! Funeral for a friend/my love lies bleeding Candle in the wind (a tribute to Marilyn Monroe)and he rewote the lyrics for Diana Goodbye yellow brick road Saturday nights alright for fighting Benny and the jets 13 more tracks ❤
Elton was a piano child prodigy. As was Mozart Candle in the Wind was changed for the funeral of Diana Princess Of Wales. Bernie re-worked the lyrics within days.
Tiny Dancer was always a road trip song for me - Bernie Taupin the Lyracist for Elton John for over 4 decades - one legendary partnership - Elton the music and the vocals - I have been listening to him since the 70's - had the priviledge to see him live in one of his last concerts here in Australia on his last tour just as Covid lockdowns hit - my children bought me the tickets - he toured not only in the cities he included some country areas - I saw him at a vineyard in a very small town called Wahgunyah. At 70 he was tireless and his piano and vocals were fantastic - he played almost non stop on a really hot summer night.
My dad died November 2017, he was a huge music fan and introduced me to all styles of music. As a 70's baby I grew up with the best music. I never cried until I was driving home and this song came on the radio and it just made me think of the wonderful an my father had been. I always think of him now with this song.
Love this song! Takes me back to 1974-75….cheerleaders & football players riding the bus to the game and singing this song at the top of our lungs…along with a few others but this one was a favorite! Hold me closer Tiny Dancer….❤❤❤ Thanks for the memories…

❤❤❤ Everytime I hear this song, I remember this from the movie Almost Famous when the band is traveling down the road on their tour bus and one by one they all start singing until everyone on the bus is singing together...epic song
This video was made very recently. There never was a video for Tiny Dancer back in the day except for some live performances. Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy is worth a listen to. The song is a look back on the early days of their songwriting partnership. Musically, really nicely put together.
Hold me closer Tony Danza! That's been said more than just once! ❤ Even though he swung the other way, his dearest friends & they were usually vulnerable women that were treated so badly but held so much grace!
One of my favourite songs by Elton John and Bernie Taupin - the very first notes immediately send goosebumps down my spine. It's a song that I always turn up to full volume in the car. 😍🥰
The title song Madman Across the Water from this album is magnificent! There's an amazing live version from a concert album Elton John recorded with an orchestra in Australia. But the studio version is a great place to start. Other favorites...(I put a * by the ones that are astounding to heqr on that live concert album with the Australian orchestra) Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters Have Mercy on the Criminal* Take Me to the Pilot* A Word in Spanish No Sacrifice Sixty Years On* Funeral for a Friend/ Love Lies Bleeding
whenever i hear this song, it takes me back to my military time. my first wife would send me cassette recordings instead of letters. she would be in her bedroom talking into the recorder. and this song was playing on her record player.
The song was written by Bernie Taupin about his girlfriend who traveled with the band and was all of the above. Bernie writes the songs, Elton writes the music and performs them.

“Tiny Dancer” was inspired by Bernie Taupin’s girlfriend, who was a seamstress and traveled with Elton and Bernie on tour. However, the song’s lyrics are more of an ode to youth, love, and freedom than a specific tribute to one person.
Everything about Elton John oozes musicality and creativity. combined with the words of Bernie Taupin is pure gold.
Background and writing
With lyrics written by Bernie Taupin, the song was first featured as the opening track to John's 1971 album, Madman Across the Water.
My favorite Elton song 🎵 ❤️
@12:06 The main song that created so many questions for Elton John was, "Daniel." When brought the song originally Elton crossed out the third verse of the song, and the third verse explained the song. David LaChapelle is credited for best "explaining" what the Daniel song was about through the video in Vegas.
This is one of his best. Elton John was so big in the 70's and a huge part of our childhood and teenage years, couldn't imagine my youth without his great music.
What a partnership, 50+ years. Bernie writes the lyrics and Elton writes the music.
In my opinion “Madman Across the Water” was the best album that Elton John ever made. I loved every song I heard from it. “Your Song” is my favorite song from him and it is on that album.
Your Song was actually on his self-titled second album, but Madman is also my favorite Elton album.
the title track is killer as well ♥
The song: Madman Across the Water is phenomenal
Tank girl knows her sh*t
The early albums were my favourite for sure. I love Levon.
I wore out countless needles playing the album with this as my favorite cut. Quite possibly Elton & Bernie's all time best song.
Thanks for this reaction. Props to Bernie Taupin for his usual marvelous lyrics. Elton's music -- from composition to performance -- is so great!
Wow. Now this is music in the highest level!
This is so nostalgic it makes me tear up.
Great reaction. Got it on the first try, nice. Bernie Taupin writes all the lyrics, Elton writes the music
“Ticking’” is one of Bernie and Elton’s very best songs
That one gets me every time.
I love this song. Watch the movie Almost Famous...it brought back my appreciation for the song and Elton John. Great movie and great music!! Elton John has a wealth of talent and a massive catalog of great music! Thank you for the reaction!!
Bennie and The Jets is another good one from Elton John and one of my top faves. :)
Background and writing
Taupin also stated in a 1973 interview in Rolling Stone that the song is about Maxine Feibelman, his wife at the time. In 2019, Feibelman said, "I knew [the song] was about me.
The ENTIRE "Madman Across the Water" is phenomenal. "Rotten Peaches" and "Daniel" are my favorites from the album.
The lady holding her AA sobriety medallion just rips me up, everytime.
I was so fortunate to see Elton in concert in Philadelphia. He's my all time favorite artist.
i grew up to this music (70s). new then. old now, but great memories, still (A) number one. love your reactions... thank you.......
Another great reaction. One of my favourites of Elton 😊
Saw him at Harley Davidson's 100th anniversary, great concert!!!
I love...Candle in the Wind...about Marylin Monroe. He was drawn to her. He's representing her in the video. Later Sir (dubbed by the Queen) redone Candle in the wind for Princess Diana's funeral!!
Madman Across the Water and Indian Sunset - A must discover!
and all of a sudden I'm on the back of the bus humming along... 😊
The idea of a Tiny Dancer is referring to how society moves through their days, taking one step at a time. The challenges and barriers we all face and how we deal with it.
The best ! What a legend!
I've always loved how this song starts with simple piano and gets richer and richer and the song goes on.
Elton’s best album in MHO is Goodbye yellow brick road, mid 70’s albums were complete start to finish hits!
Funeral for a friend/my love lies bleeding
Candle in the wind (a tribute to Marilyn Monroe)and he rewote the lyrics for Diana
Goodbye yellow brick road
Saturday nights alright for fighting
Benny and the jets
13 more tracks ❤
Elton was a piano child prodigy. As was Mozart
Candle in the Wind was changed for the funeral of Diana Princess Of Wales. Bernie re-worked the lyrics within days.
Border song. Somebody saved my life tonight. Older live versions...❤ classic Elton John
This is one of the songs where people misheard the lyrics. In this one, they thought he was singing "Hold me closer, Tony Danza."
This may be my favorite EJ song. It was a bit before my time but glad I found it. 🔥❤️ you should see EJ and Axl rose perform together.😊🤩❤️🔥
1️⃣☺️☮️💟☯️🌸Thank you so very much for sharing ELTON JOHNS🌸🪡🧵🙏🏠🇺🇸🆖🆕🆓🌺🤍🌺 (Tiny Dancer 💃🏻 ) absolutely 👍 ❤️it and ELTON BEAUTIFUL WORK TOGETHER AND THE BEST ARTISTS EVER 1️⃣☺️🥰💋🐝
This song still gives me goosebumps and makes me melancholy for the 70's
In an interview Billy Joel was asked what it was like to be the Piano Man?. He relied, “I don’t know. Ask Elton John.”
My best memory of this song is the scene in the movie Almost Famous, when they all sing along to it on the tour bus!!!
his finest album "madman across the water".
Hold me closer Tony Danza! That's been said more than just once! ❤ Even though he swung the other way, his dearest friends & they were usually vulnerable women that were treated so badly but held so much grace!
One of my favourite Elton songs. Try Grey Seal and Harmony
One of my favourite songs by Elton John and Bernie Taupin - the very first notes immediately send goosebumps down my spine. It's a song that I always turn up to full volume in the car. 😍🥰
His songs are a lot deeper then one might think on first listen
Best Elton John album ever is a recording of a live radio concert. Titled 11-17-70.
The title song Madman Across the Water from this album is magnificent! There's an amazing live version from a concert album Elton John recorded with an orchestra in Australia. But the studio version is a great place to start.
Other favorites...(I put a * by the ones that are astounding to heqr on that live concert album with the Australian orchestra)
Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters
Have Mercy on the Criminal*
Take Me to the Pilot*
A Word in Spanish
No Sacrifice
Sixty Years On*
Funeral for a Friend/ Love Lies Bleeding
Beautiful ❤
I think this is his greatest song, and that's saying something.
whenever i hear this song, it takes me back to my military time. my first wife would send me cassette recordings instead of letters. she would be in her bedroom talking into the recorder. and this song was playing on her record player.
