    Canon LTM rangefinders are so underrated. Love to see the Canon 7S review.
    Issues with some Canon LTM lenses and especially the 50mm f1.2 is the internal haze. Finding a clean copy will be costly.

    It is interesting how some older lenses keep their status despite newer and better ones from other brands is technically better but where the old ones still attract people!

    • @DarrylCarey
      @DarrylCarey  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Sina, the old lenses still have a place today. To many lenses today are over sharp and have no character, plus with mirrorless cameras you adapter almost any old lens to them.

    Canon LTM lenses are criminally underrated. The 50/1.4 dubbed the Japanese Summilux (no doubt named by Leica center-of-the-wordlists) actually predates the Summilux. It’s too bad Canon didn’t name their lenses but for now let’s call the Summilux the German Canon 50/1.4. I currently use the 50/1.4 and the 35/1.8 on my Canon 7s and M4-2. So good.
    PS. They’re perfect on my xPro3 with a LM adapter.
    PS. Mark II, Hard to keep hearing about the infinity lock. It was created to make it easier to screw/unscrew the lens (as well as taking stress off the focusing helicoid when attaching/removing) since it’s a screw mount. And if you have 5 seconds to spare it’s easily removed with one screw.

      The Voigtlander 500mm f2 APO is a beautiful lens and very sharp and has a nice punch to the images. But that is a little over $1000. I would go for the Zeiss 50mm f/1.5, which is one of the best 50mm’s for Leica M mount for the price.

    Great video - thanks. I got an exceptional one and sent it to Kanto Camera here in Tokyo (actually Kawasaki, but close enough) for a CLA. It came back essentially new and is simply astonishing it its abilities for a lens of this age. Similar results to yours it seems, especially with the rather wild bokeh on digital. At the same time I got a mint 50mm F1.4 LTM and had that CLA's as well - that lens is possibly even better!

      I purchased f1.2 on eBay and the description said "no haze", but it had that haze that is quite typical to f1.2 lenses I learned later. I paid quite a lot of money for that lens and was disappointed. I am also considering sending it to Kanto Camera to get it fixed. They have a replacement part. BTW, check out this nice f1.4 video if you have not already, it looks like f1.4 lens is a true gem and perhaps not fully appreciated at the moment! th-cam.com/video/c91fScmuP5Y/w-d-xo.html

      @1111undici1111 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If anyone else is having similar haze problem with their f1.2 lens, here's what Kanto Camera says about the haze: "Most of the Canon 50/1.2 LTM lens has an issue of haze of an inner element. It's the aging deterioration of glass itself, and it cannot be solved by cleaning or repolishing. We have reproduce this element to provide service in the past, but we had to stop offering the service since we had run out of the parts. We finally reproduced the replacement elements once again with cooperate from an optical manufacture in Japan. If you have a Canon 50/1.2 LTM lens with haze, we can repair it."

    • @drunacres
      @drunacres 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@1111undici1111 that is the service I used and they replaced the element. I now have a very, very good lens that I am super happy with. It did take 3 months, but the outcome was worth it.

    I’ve shot this lens against the Leica 50mm 1.4 summilux asph and it held its own very very well, the summilux’s bokeh is slightly smoother, also though the summilux is sharper it has more purple fringing wide open .

  • @stuartmeador8993

    so many of the leica bayonet to ltm adapters are slight difference in thickness and the lens goes a little past top dead center... have to shim them ( a bit if typing paper thickness) and they pop into focus at correct distance.

    • @DarrylCarey
      @DarrylCarey  2 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @stuartmeador8993
      @stuartmeador8993 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DarrylCarey the give-away is if the little focus line of the lens is exactly top dead center on the camera the focus will be ok. some of the adapters won't let the lens screw in far enough to do that .. others let the lens screw in too far and go past T D C

  • @MB-or8js
    @MB-or8js 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Better option with very similar character is the Canon 50/1.4 LTM lens, also named Japanese Summilux. Swirly bokeh wide open but better in contrast and sharpness than the 50/1.2. More reasonable price wise, too. Good copies of the 50/1.4 exist whereas the 50/1.2 has a culprit in lens built which easier lets humidity and dust in.

      It appears to me f1.4 is highly underrated at the moment at least what comes to price of that lens. It is cheaper than f1.2 on eBay for example, but seems to be a really high quality lens and many seem to consider it better than f1.2. My copy's RF coupling is spot on, on my M4-2 so regardless of what aperture, its tac sharp. For these large aperture lenses and the .72x viewfinder do you use a magnifier?
