    The reason I went for GoPro Hero 9 was the image stabilisation. I've seen comparisons where the GoPro easily out performs the 1" mod.
    The other thing was ruggedness. The GoPro appears better there too, I'm not sure the 360 would survive the same impacts.
    GoPro is probably the best for extreme sports like Mountain biking because of these considerations.
    I'm enjoying the content! I just thought these were some fairly substantial comparisons worth adding.

    • @DavidManningvlog
      @DavidManningvlog  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, I think if you're rocking action sports, the Hero 9 has the better stabilization, but when things are going to get really rough, I switch to 360 anyways because the stabilization is ridiculously good! Like I mentioned, it's a tough comparison because I reach for different tools for different jobs. BUT, if I could only own one, I think the ONE R makes the most sense for it's ability to do more with one camera system. For what you're doing though, I would rock either the Hero 9 or the Insta ONE R in 360 mode👍

      @@DavidManningvlog Cheers for the reply. I'd love to see a comparison between the 3/4 cameras you mentioned at the end.
      No doubt in the future a 360 camera will be on the cards, the reason I avoided it this time was mostly down to the lower resolution you can pull off, or that's what seemed to be the case. The idea of 4/5k stabilised was an exciting prospect.

    David, I had the 360 One R. However, I couldn't get it out of 480 resolution in Premier Pro. Any insight as to what I was doing wrong? I even exported from the Insta software to premier. But still no dice, so I got rid of it and havestuck with my gopros since. I want the 360 capability, but if I can't get that quality it's not worth it

    I looked HARD at the One R for all these reasons. I do paragliding, hanggliding, paramotoring, ultralight flying, airplanes, motorcycles and scuba with my GoPro 9 and the Lens Mod works great for mounting it ON the kite itself and never goes upside down from the SW as a result. I chose to just keep my setup GoPro consistent however I don't have a 360 camera and that pole etc would have been far greater for my motorcycle-Baja ride and I wished I had it for that. However, I'm impressed with GoPro's updates and am told their app has some cool updates coming as well. Who knows, my next one might be the One R and having both would be a great way to go maybe next year.

      if you have that many gopros as I do, I'd say stick to the same system for color grading purposes. It's one of the reasons why I never switched over to insta. Grading on multiple cameras with the same colors is way easier to do.

    I went with a Hero 9 when I picked up my first-ever action camera back at the start of December, as I'm primarily interested in timelapses/hyperlapses (and from my research it seemed pretty good for those) and am not really interested in 360° footage. I've been quite impressed with it so far; as someone who's done amateur astrophotography before I was blown away with how good its nighttime timelapses are for being so simple to set up. I managed to catch the Jupiter/Saturn Grand Conjunction earlier this week, and the view from inside an Australian hailstorm the week before Christmas. Definitely appreciate your coverage though! I've been researching the decision since around July, now that GoPro has some decent competition.

    I have GoPro Hero 7 cameras and the Insta360 One R Aerial Edition for the Mavic Pro. The drone configuration did not work well at all, but the split 360 mod and the 4K mod work well by themselves after the summer/fall 2020 firmware upgrades. I decided to upgrade my Insta360 One R setup by purchasing a second Insta360 One R Core module so I have two functional Insta360 One R cameras. The Insta360 One R core module costs around $200 USD, so that still makes it a few dollars cheaper than the GoPro Hero 9 Black and GoPro Max. Thanks for making this video!

    I have had a GoPro8 for over a year and choose it over the Insta360 R due to the audio quality, however we just recently also purchased an Insta360 X2 in hopes that my wife can utilize it with her cooking channel and not need to setup multiple camera angles to start out. I'm sure I will use it as a walkaround with the kids while having the GoPro8 for the talking portions. I never really liked the idea of carrying around the modules for the Insta360 R. Sometimes you just need to get the shot and the Insta360 R would have the wrong lens on it. If you have two devices you have a better chance to get the shot especially if you are not having to fuss with the case. If I had to recommend one I would probably tell people to get the Insta360 X2 and use your phone if you find you need a non-360 camera, however I have seen people use just a 360 camera for everything.

    I like the idea of being modular a lot but I’m hooked on the GoPro ecosystem because of GoPro Plus’s unlimited, uncompressed cloud storage. Can you do a review on that and maybe suggest some alternatives to the cloud storage. I film a lot when I mountain bike and the unlimited storage is definitely a game changer! It’s the reason I still use the karma drone with a hero 7.

Your body of work speaks for itself. You say what you think. You’re right, if you were to have to pick one (which you don’t) get the Insta. Many people only want to buy one and that is the premise for this video. Well done. Me however... I have three GoPro’s and since I do canoeing and motorcycle videos, it’s super helpful to have at least two cameras to get different viewpoints at he same time and make my videos more interesting. I totally see the value of the Insta modular system but I just can’t make the jump. Too deep in the GoPro “ecosystem” (sorry for he misuse of the term that really applies to Apple products more than any other product)

    • @DavidManningvlog

      Craziness, right?! And you are one of the OGs on here! I also couldn't agree with you more. If you're doing something where multiple cameras helps, boom load it up with GoPros! But if you're looking to buy one system that can do it all, that's where the ONE R really shines. Also, the ecosystem thing totally applies with GoPro and why I think a lot of people chose the MAX as their 360 cam. I'm one of those who pre-ordered the Insta360 1-inch version when it was first announced because I was so hyped on their 1-inch sensor, low light performance and insanely sharp 5.3K footage... BUT, since I've got it, I didn't use it ONCE!
    The problem with this is the minimum focus distance, stabilization, and audio quality! Even with the optional audio jack for an external mic, it is pretty much useless :O
    Then I put myself together and ordered the 4K mod, to at least cope with the minimum focus distance problem, but now, the quality has become so bad that I didn't use it either.
    You are right about Insta360 doing a great job at working on firmware and stuff, but even now after almost 2 years (?) it still is unusable for what most people do...
    If only I knew this before.
    I think that there is no place for an action camera in the world of hobby or professional videographers because it only does that one job and not even the way most people would want it to do.
    Still, you are doing a great job with your reviews, and definitely have my sub!

      Hi Alex @LXAP Production it's interesting reading your statement, "The problem with this is the minimum focus distance, stabilization, and audio quality! Even with the optional audio jack for an external mic, it is pretty much useless :O ." Would you also add image quality on the Insta360 1-inch not being particularly impressive as well? Although, I think @David Manning is absolutely correct about the low light capabilities of the Insta360 1-inch. But I'm just finding the company Insta360 is constantly trying to catch up with firmware updates to extend the camera's capabilities. I really wanna believe that this 1-inch sensor can output a higher dynamic range and better image quality in optimal lighting situations. However, based on youtube video comparisons my eyes tell me that GoPro 9 engineers surpass the results of the Insta360 camp. The 1-inch sensor might be 4 times the size of the GoPro 1/2.3-inch, but it's clearly not producing better overall image quality.

    Have an Insta360 One R and would trade it for a GoPro Hero 9. Modularity sounds cool in concept, but that means lugging around a lot more stuff (or even worse a case to hold the other components). The cage is awful and is another component and if you opt for the extra battery which has a direct mount then the unit itself is not as stable. Only so many times want 360 footage and editing in the app is a pain / time consuming

    Very good video David!! Thank you! You gave me the recommendation to get the One R over the Max and I couldn't be happier. I own the Hero 9 and 8, and Insta360 with the 360 lens and the 1 inch sensor. 360 wise, you are correct, Insta360 is great with the app, shot lab, all of that. When shooting regular footage though, I personally like how GoPro footage looks. Its like how Apple people prefer Apple photos and Samsung people prefer Samsung photos. Nothing wrong with either, just personal preference I guess. If only a company would mash these 2 together and get the functionality of the Insta360, the footage quality and color profile of GoPro and then throw in the Insta360 app with shot labs. Prefection!!!! And yes, please do a Hero 9 vs 1 Inch sensor video. Would love to see it!! Thanks again for all the great videos David!!

    Great vid buddy! I still don't use the insta just cuz the cage is so fiddly, changing the battery alone is annoying enough that I won't touch it. Using your comparison, yes it's more expensive to go the gopro route but, having 2 cameras is always better than 1. I'm not a huge fan of either apps for reframe, they really need to work on that. I edit all my footage on the computer cuz I'm filming more for the cinematics so with that being said, gopro has better integration with the adobe premiere preset (gopro reframe). In terms of low light footage, if you haven't seen my 5k Gopro Hero 9 at night in Toronto video already, go check it out, I'm sure you'll be blown away at how good the gopro 9 is compared to the insta even with a 1 inch sensor. Would be curious to see how the 1 inch insta would perform if I used the same rig, but sadly I don't have the insta nor do I plan on buying another action cam, cuz I already have 7 of them and they're all gopros lol. IMO, I think image stabilization alone on the gopro 9 kills the insta already hands down.

    • @DavidManningvlog
      @DavidManningvlog  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, I think two cameras is always better than one, but for this video I was trying to answer that question that people keep asking of "what if I only want to buy one camera?" Because I almost always run a GoPro 9 as my main camera and a ONE R 360 mod as my 360 camera, like I mentioned at the beginning of the video. I'm shocked though to hear that you got better results out of the GoPro 9 at night than the 1 " mod on the Insta360. I've tried a ton of different low light tests with the two and the 1" mod has crushed the GoPro in every one of them. With a 1" sensor though, it makes sense that would be the case. The real question is what GoPro could do with a GoPro PRO that was a GoPro with a 1" sensor. Now that's what I want to see!

    2. Can we plug the charging cable in the car, so we dont have to replace the battery if we drive for 6 hours.
    3. Can we record using Gopro and friends continously for some hours? as a dash cam.
    4. How Gopro and friends keep recording for many hours if it can, by rewriting the first file if the memory card already full?
    5. How many hours Gopro and friends become too hot if we keep recording for many hours, and is there any heat sensor to shut it off automatically?
    6. How does it create and store the file? by separate each file for every 5 min for example, or can it record lets say 6 hours in one file?
    7. What can of file Gopro, Insta360, DJI Osmo create? mp4 or whatever file they do? can we watch the file straight away in a laptop? and which one the easiest file to watch in laptop or phone?
    8. If we only one chance to get one action cam, GoPro 9, DJI Osmo pocket 2, Insta360 Go 2, or 360 One R?

I seldom use the Fusion because of the quality and the time required to process it in the video editing program.

    @LiL_Miss_Fiasco 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I love the idea of the Insta360, and the AI tracking in the software would make my life so much easier. The 1 inch sensor seems incredible too. But for me, the biggest reason I went with the GoPro Max is because I hit skateparks and have cracked lenses from bails and slams. The fact that GoPro has cheap and easily replaceable lens covers was exactly what I need. Secondary reason was because I was already in the GoPro ecosystem with a Hero 6 and remote, making capturing multiple angles with the press of one button (and being able to mark the good takes easily by hitting the mode button to add a highlight) was easy. I was disappointed that GoPro didn't have a PC app when I first picked it up, but it looks like they released one now. So fortunately I'm no longer stuck editing all the 360 footage on my phone!

    • @DavidManningvlog
      @DavidManningvlog  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There's for sure an added benefit to staying within an ecosystem. Mainly that you're using one app and one desktop program instead of two different company's apps and desktop programs. I haven't really used the GoPro MAX with the remote much, but there's for sure some sweet shots that we could probably get if we did!

    Really like your channel, but I have a question, I'm confused between a GoPro Hero 9 and Insta360 X2, and I can afford only one. I like the 360 format and the capabilities a lot, I want one for taking videos on my motorcycle and have no past experience in this and don't want to hassle with framing the shot etc, while this is possible in the insta360, it's not in GoPro, but hero9 has better image quality, do you think it's worth getting the insta360 one X2 over the hero 9, considering the added 360 benefit. And yeah I know about the one R but I don't really like that, it's more expensive if I go for the twin edition, and out of my league when it comes to the one inch mod, these cameras cost almost $140 more, due to taxes.

  • @longboardluv2
    @longboardluv2 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    i wish you wouldn't have just skimmed over the audio factor. since audio is SO important for vlogging, some consider it even more important than the video, it should be weighed more heavily in this consideration. I'd go with the hero 9 with the audio adapater. I don't need 360. Also. You are comparing the 1inch sensor vs the hero9, that's not the same as the standard insta360 lens. Again, we are waiting to see your review of the media mod for the 9 too. We need AUDIO testing!

    • @DavidManningvlog
      @DavidManningvlog  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'll dive more into the audio when I do the Hero 9 vs 1" Mod on the ONE R. The main reason I did it this way and not the 4K mod is that the Expert Edition is now cheaper than the GoPro alternative. And with the Hero 9 being 5K it makes sense to compare to Insta360's 5.3K version and not their 4K mod. I'll get more into audio in that next video though👍

    You know I got the insta360 one R when it first came out and it has been a love hate relationship. I think the experience on the app really depends on what phone you are using it with. Iphone - no issues. If you are using it on Android, your mileage really varies from the app being unusable on certain phones to just as good as the iPhone on others. The camera sometimes just doesn't turn off and you have to pull the battery. It has it's quirks and I wish you had covered some of those in your review but when it works, it works great.

    im still wondering which i should be buying.
    Insta360 One R = still available here in my country but from my research, there are multiple instances where the unit that you get out of the box is a lemon.
    Insta 360 One X2 = stocks and accessories are limited. no long term reviews or videos about common issues regarding the one x2 as well.

      I think between the two, the question is whether you have another camera already. If you already have something like a GoPro or Osmo Action, then I would say go for the X2. But if you want one camera that can do 360 and regular action cam, then go for ONE R👍

      @@DavidManningvlog thanks for the advice! I agree i think the one x2 would be worth the wait since i already have a GoPro hero 6

    Hey David. I didn’t know that about the low light thing on the one R I like my 4K sensor thingy. But that’s pretty sick. Might upgrade to that in the future

      Also by friend. I thought insta 360 was only waterproof when it’s clicked into the frame?

      Yeah, the 1" sensor is wild to have in an action camera! Way better low light and detail in the image. And the ONE R is waterproof as soon as it's clicked together, but it's best to put it into the cage so you don't accidentally dismantle it under water👍

    I will get insta 360 for 1 inch sensor and image quality and 360 mode. I own hero 7 and i don't see the reason to switch to hero 8 o 9. If u use it on bike or hardcore sports - there is the spot for gopro. If u walk around the city or do travel vlogs - u can take insta 360 with 1 inch sensor. In My opinion gopro is more durable.

    Loved the video! Yet, the one aspect I was hoping you'd cover would be the durability, or the possibility of replacing the lenses if they get bumped. Just like when one drops the lens like you almost did.
    I dropped my insta360 One X and one lens is scratched. No way to replace it or fix it. So, how does the Insta360 One R give us a solution to problems like dropping your lens? How much would it cost me to replace just either the One inch or the 360 lens if damaged. And do they have lens covers that you can use WHILE recording so that they may stay protected WHILE using them. After all, they are action cameras.
    Thanks!

      all 360 cams have the same problem, the lenses have to be the protruding part of the unit to get the 360 view. My best advice is to buy a case for transporting it and use it more carefully than you would other action cams.

      @@CheeseOnEverything thanks for he reply. (Love the name, by the way haha)
      I'm not sure, but I think I saw a review somewhere that mentioned you could replace the lens on the GoPro Max (or was it the fusion?). That, in my opinion, is a practical advantage.
      I have an adventure case on my insta360 One X. I just happened to drop it the one time I didn't place it in the case... Ugh.... Anyway, using the case makes it heavier when on the extended invisible stick and can't record sound.
      I think all these cameras should have a way of protecting their lenses, just like you can replace the lense on the regular GoPro Hero 9.

    • @DavidManningvlog
      @DavidManningvlog  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yup, Cheese is right on this one, 360 cameras are just more fragile! BUT, the ONE R does have the ability to swap out the 360 mod bit without swapping out the whole camera. I'm not sure what GoPro charges to replace the lenses on the MAX, but on the ONE R, you could just pop out the 360 mod for a new one for $180. Not cheap, but better than having to replace the whole camera👍
