    if you're new here:
    - we don’t do makeup wipes
    - if you wear makeup think about double cleanse
    - no products with fragrance
    - diy skincare is a big NONO
    - Eye creams are expensive moisturizers
    - Sunscreen!!! Every. Single. Day
    - Chemical exfoliators >>>>>>> Physical exfoliators
    - YES to Niacinamide
    - (Drying) Alcohol in ingredients = DON’T BUY
    - No raw coconut oil on skin! If you do you’re choosing death
    - We like ‘The Ordinary’ and ‘CeraVe’
-We also stan ‘The Inkey list’
    - Always moisturize (even if u have oily skin)
    - We need to take down St. Ives
    - We do shoulder shakes daily ;)

I believe its also about individual skin type. For those with dry skin, an extra layer of hydration with a toner is not bad. For the summer time, when dehydration is at peak, a hydrating toner could really feel soothing on the skin.

    • @berlineczka
      @berlineczka 4 ปีที่แล้ว +37

However, dehydrated oily skin may like it as well. This is what I prefer with my disco ball of a face. I'd rather have a hydrating toner or essence and a lighter moisturiser (e.g. silicone or dry oil based like the water bomb Korean formulas), especially if I want to put enough sunscreen at the end. My skin will simply not absorb that much moisture and all the occlusives. It will end up peeling off of my face or caking up my make up, so I'd rather give my skin more hydration, which is what it craves, with just a minimum of moisture as that is enough for me anyway.

    • @lunasees7580
      @lunasees7580 4 ปีที่แล้ว +15

I agree! I have oily skin and I need toner cuz I can adjust how much hydration I need each day. Some day I don't need it, some day I do. Adjusting hydration with toner is easier for my skin type cuz it's lighter, lessen my chance to get fun stuff like fungal acne and clogged pores.

    • @ShymaHabeeb
      @ShymaHabeeb 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

@@lunasees7580 yes exactly. I love layering and I love to start with hydrating toners, gradually going towards heavier moisturizers. But during the summers I hate using creams, it just feels so uncomfortable. So the more hydrating products, the better for me. See that's what I meant, its totally about individual skin type and weather. Skin type + weather is the combo for me that decides my routine, like how much of hydration do I need and how much moistirization. I do get combination skin in monsoon, so at that time its about hydration more on the drier parts of my face.

for me, toner cleared up my acne and ordinary serums made me break out. everyone’s skin is different. once i cut out ordinary serums and started using the much hated neutrogna toner my skin cleared up and is healthy now. everyone has different skin, don’t hate on hyram if something he says doesn’t give you perfect skin, it works for a lot of people

If your new here’s some skincare knowledge!
1: We Stan the ordinary, the inky list, youth to the people, cerea VE,krave beauty, Paulas choice and curology.
2: We dislike Mario badescu, clean and clear, most of neutrogena products, most of tatcha products, kiley skin, pixi skin and many more
3: fragrance is a BIG no. It can can cause many problems like irritation, rashes, pimples, acne and many more
4: Mario badescu sprays are just fragrance in water m💧
5: makeup wipes do more harm than good ( for your skin and the environment)
6: double cleanse if you wear makeup and or sunscreen
7: chemical exfoliating is way better than physical exfoliating
    8: everyone’s skin is different
9: everyone needs to moisturize even if you have oily skin
10: use what works for you
11: fragrance is fine in a wash off treatment but not on a leave on treatment like moisturizer, surum, essence etc
12: be gentle with your skin
13: natural is not always better
14: sunscreen is the most important part of a skin care routine and should be used after everything else
15: eye creams are just expensive moisturizers and are not necessary , just use your regular moisturizer
16: our enemy is st. Ives apricot scrub😳
17: diy skincare is a no, most of them use essential oils (which are just as irritating as regular fragrance) and any of the good benefits that you could be getting from the ingredients are most like lost when you cut the fruit or vegetable open
18: enjoy yourself while doing your skincare and think of it as your you time
19: try to recycle ♻️ your empty skincare containers
20: a good and simple routine should have 4 steps, cleanser(this includes cleansing balms, oils etc), exfoliate, moisturizer, and the most important of them all, sunscreen.
21: ingredients to avoid. Denatured/SD alcohol, ethanol, isopropyl alcohol, polyvinyl alcohol(avoid these when they are in the first 6 ingredients). Avoid fragrance/parfum. Avoid fragrant essential oils (they are okay if they are at the end of the ingredient list). And avoid citrus extracts (lime, orange, lemon etc)

When considering a toner I have always been told that skin is like a sponge. A sponge absorbs liquid much easier and a lot more of it when it is already damp as opposed to when it is dry, where the liquid runs right off of it. In relation to your skincare and the use of a toner, the toner acts as the 'dampening of the sponge' so that your additional products are able to be absorbed and therefore more effective.
With that said, I have had very dry skin ever since I went on accutane 5 years ago, so this advice could likely have a lot to do with the importance of hydration in my skincare routine.
I would love to hear your thoughts on this analogy, what do you think?? PS I LOVE YOU AND SKINCARE

A toner (or liquid lotion) is supposed to not only add in hydration, but it also helps your next skincare steps penetrate the skin more effectively. I've seen a few companies use a watercolor paper metaphor to explain this. Basically the pigments of watercolors saturate more of the paper when it's wet than when it's dry. Kind of like how smearing moisturizer on my skin post shower just doesn't do the job as well. So yes, technically you don't need one but it will level up your routine IMHO.

If that’s not the case, have you tried using a benzoyl peroxide wash? It usually helps with stubborn acne! If you can go to a specialist, please try to! If not, then a cleanser like PanOxyl might help. Just please use it in moderation and introduce it to your skin slowly (start with once a week, then work your way up to about 3 times a week. This will take some time though because benzoyl peroxide is a stronger ingredient). Don’t use any other actives with it. Just cleanse and hydrate and wear sunscreen during the day! I just want to say: Hyram, thank you a lot for all the super educational videos and tips.
I struggled with acne since I was 12 years (now 23) and only this year I finally got rid of it after I decided to take strong medication for 8 months (isotretinoin "Accutane") because all those years NOTHING helped. I'm still acne free since I took my last medication a few weeks ago and I was so scared that my acne would come back the first day I stopped taking the medicine. Until recently, skincare has been so so very stressful to me. I learned a lot from your videos and now I can carefully and slowly start to test some products, because from the medicine my skin got so dry.
I feel so much better now and my self esteem got an enormous boost (which is at the same time kinda a weird feeling because its been over 10 years of trying to hide my skin under makeup and getting heavily bullied back in school). So yeah, when I look at products now I take a good look at the ingredient list before I'm going to buy anything and honestly I'm just so happy, thank you for everythig, I feel confident buying the right products now because now I know which ingredients could harm my skin (+ WHY they could harm) and which could be really beneficial. It feel SO GREAT to finally go outside without makeup and clear skin. Now I just have to work on healing scars and pigmentation left from acne.
Love love love from Germany and sorry for my not so great English! Please stay as you are 💜

I’d love to see more videos like this! I’ve noticed you mention keeping it simple with a 4 or 5 step routine in a few videos. I think it would be fantastic and super helpful if you made a video like this for each step of the process (I.e explaining the necessity of a cleanser/exfoliate/treatment/moisturizer etc - why it’s important? Exactly what it does for the skin? What the benefits are and how it works in relation to the other steps of a routine? Or how the steps differ from each other etc etc). I really enjoy understanding the process and exactly what I am doing to my skin, rather than simply buying a product and using it.
Looking forward to your new videos and trying to get a grip on this seemingly chaotic world of skincare, thanks!!!

I've tried but my skin is so picky it's frustrating. It's hard to look for a balance between affordable and works for my skin. Also gel moisturizers could be too light for me but cream is too thick. So the moisturizer i use is a cross between them. I realized these type of moisturizers are quite rare like If they discontinue it, it will be a hard to find an alternative.. same goes for the cleanser that i like.. I can't buy it locally so i bought an alternative and its not as good.

YES when my skin used to be horribly dry, i felt like if anything those rich creams did nothing for me because there was no water in my skin for them to trap!! I know you mentioned affordable, so you can ignore this rec if you want, but the only thing that helped my dry skin was either the paula's choice primrose calming toner OR more recently i love her water infusing moisturizer layered under another thicker, creamier moisturizer (it's not really a gel, but when massaged into the skin it literally feels like your sticking water into your face and it is SO NICE and got rid of those gross patches on my face).
Her products are pricey though so i'd wait for one of those to be on sale (PC's website frequently has promotions for 20-30% off select products!) and if you struggle with redness and irritation, i'd also HIGHLY recommend the calm line--the moisturizer for dry skin in particular has been my favorite moisturizer for years now.

Yes! Also, they may be a great add-on to your skincare routine what it's more or less fine but just need a little bit of improvement. For example, you like all the products you're using, but sometimes you feel your face is a little dry at the end of the day. Or it gets a little reddish after cleansing or exfoliating and it takes it two days to come back to normal. Instead of starting a full try and error process of finding "a better serum" or "a better moisturiser" or "a less irritating cleanser", and risk irritations, failed purchases and a domino effect (e.g. the calmer cleanser doesn't go well with your moisturiser, so now you also need to find a new creme as well), just add a hydrating or calming toner in between et voila!

Thanks for the replies. I'm happy I'm not alone in this. Early this year I went on a trial and error phase/failed purchase after my old moisturizer got sold out and not restocked. The same thing is happening to me now with my cleanser. Sad life.

@@hrae91 I went through the same thing ugh I just started budgeting around and waiting for sales and stocking up whenever I found products that i knew for sure would work. i'm less likely to spend on makeup any fret about other stuff when my skin is clear and hydrated and not patchy or red anyway so i figured it was worth it haha

I love their moisturizer. I cover myself in it every time I leave the shower, but not on my face. Milk makeup is my favorite for my face and recently I've been using ETUDE HOUSE SoonJung 2x Barrier Intensive Cream. Wayyyy cheaper than milk makeup but also a bit thicker since it's a "barrier cream"

Hey everyone! Sort of new here. I discovered Hyram last year and he has completely changed my opinion on skincare. I used to think it was hassle so I literally just splashed warm water on my face and wiped it off. Tried proactive, burned my skin, tried St. Ives, felt terrible. But now I double cleanse and use serums and moisturizers. More to the point of this video, since my skin tends to have adverse reactions to A LOT of stuff I actually do use a toner and it made a difference for me. It’s Peach & Lily’s The Good Acids toner. It’s a gentle chemical exfoliate to remove dead skin and i went from minor break outs to almost none once i started using it instead of physical exfoliants (even though I do gently physically exfoliate my face once a month). So while I agree they probably aren’t necessary this one really helped me and i do recommend them!

Loved loved loved this video! Absolutely agree, specially because A LOT of the most popular toners are fragrance factories and people don’t realize that’s awful for the skin.

I love watching you and Susan! I’m started to get introduced to James too slowly :)
Love your content and your nice attitude to everything you don’t make anyone feel bad :) I learn so much, last week I bought a few things and the correct way your supposed to apply them, my husband can’t get over how soft and bright my skin every time we cuddle.

I really appreciate that you two still respect one another and disagree so strongly on something, a lot of people are "my way or no way at all" on here and to see you two acknowledge you do disagree but don't let it get into this huge deal (I know it sounds silly over face toner but at this point on TH-cam influencers could beef over how to pronounce "tomato" and I wouldn't be surprised). Anyway we love to see it!!

I am so happy you did this hyram. I personally believe that masks, toners, and tools (Unless tools from an aesthetician) are meaningless. I use to have A LOT of products in my skincare routine but now it is so bare minimum and I'm so happy that you've helped me in my skincare journey.❤

I literally just bought a toner. I have dry and acne prone skin and I need very heavy moisturizers. However they usually break me out so I use a toner to add a little extra hydration so I can use a lighter moisturizer. Love you Hyram ❤️
