  • Joined by my mate Lee, we headed to the College Valley in the Cheviot Hills to test out my new Mountain Laurel Designs DCF Trailstar. After parking at Hethpool in the College Valley, we did a quick ascent to the summit of an Iron Age Hill Fort known as Great Hetha.
    Having pitched for the night, we enjoyed a Keralan chicken curry I prepared on the Trangia stove, before heading home the next morning.
    I hope you enjoy watching, cheers.

    Good looking shelter, that trailstar. Never been up Great Hetha but looked a grand place to camp, just the place for a curry. Nice shot of the hills in the morning.

      Thanks Graham. Really close to the Hethpool car park so felt like cheating 🤣
      Just watched your Hen Hole video today as planning on a camp there on Saturday with my Dad. Need to think about what will be on the menu.
      All the best Graham. 🙏

      Cheers Stu 🙏 it’s cos I’m greedy. It also gives me something to do when in camp. I don’t enjoy lugging all the ingredients and trangia up the hills though.

    Interesting tarp tent mate, it'll be fantastic for multi day summer hikes I'd reckon. Pretty moody weather you had there but atleast you both got yourselves out. Enjoyed that 👍

      Cheers for watching and leaving a comment Lee. Hope to camp around Gunnerside soon. Watched your videos of your camp there. I’m confident we won’t have any midge issues this time of year 🤣. When you camped there was it busy with walkers right up until sunset and were there other wild campers around?
      Cheers mate 🙏

    • @LeesOutdoorOdyssey
      @LeesOutdoorOdyssey ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Below Average Wild Camper Gunnerside is a lovely place. It's terrible for the midges in warm weather. I wouldn't say it's overly busy. I've camped there twice now and had the place to myself both times. You should be fine this time of year. You might possibly get the day trippers hiking until about 5-6pm but it should be good after that. The video you watched me camp at is only one of the ruins, but it had amazing views as it was quite high up. If you carry on further down the track and reach the stream at the bottom of the valley, there are more ruins and better options for camping down there. Looking forward to watching your video 👍

      Hi, thanks for commenting.
      In general I love it. The only drawback with mine is the DCF material prevents getting a perfectly taught pitch. I think the Trailstar in either the SilNylon or the new SilPoly would be a far better shelter. Loads of room inside and even though the footprint is large, it's easy to pitch over lumps, bumps, and rocks etc.
      Hope that helps. All the best. 👍

  • @AndrewBeavers
    @AndrewBeavers ปีที่แล้ว

    Nice area up that valley & around those tops pal ill have to get back up there..always fancied a trailstar just the size of the footprint puts me off..I'd be concerned about not getting pitched at some of the spots I get to..looked a faff getting the dcf pitched not as forgiving as the sil are they..sheep shite everywhere luv it 😂

    • @belowaveragewildcamper
      @belowaveragewildcamper  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, it’s a great valley with some lovely rolling hills either side and hardly a soul about Andy. Give me a shout next time you’re thinking about heading up to the Cheviots.
      The DCF is definitely much trickier and less forgiving than SilNylon, but given it was my first time away from the back garden it wasn’t too bad. Although it’s obviously a big footprint, it is easy to pitch over obstacles. I pitched with a big lump and a big rock under 2 of the 5 sides. In saying that, if I was buying a new one from MLD I’d be getting the sil version as the extra cost of DCF isn’t worth it.
      Aye, sheep shit literally everywhere mate. Scruffy bastards. 🤣
      A mate suggested a camp at Gunnerside Gill. Would you
      recommend or is it a bit too busy?
      👍

    Spot on Steve, the new dcf shelter looks spot on mate, very versatile them, and a bet it’s super light 👌 , every time a watch your videos, it makes me proper hungry, always knocking up good bait, the curry looked lovely, I’m hopefully looking to pop up to the cheviots for a camp next weekend, was gonna go this weekend but weather looked crap, look forward to seeing your next one, atb Mick 👍

    • @belowaveragewildcamper
      @belowaveragewildcamper  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cheers Mick. The Trailstar is about 400grams, so it’s mega light considering how much room there is inside.
      Best thing about the Cheviots is that there is literally no one else there. I love it for that reason. It may not be as glamorous as the lakes or the peaks but it’s unbeatable for solitude and it’s beautiful. Plus it’s only just over an hour away from us.
      🙏

    Great video. How did you cook the rice so it was hot whilst also doing the curry?

    • @belowaveragewildcamper
      @belowaveragewildcamper  ปีที่แล้ว

      Excellent question. I used the saucepan of curry as the lid for the saucepan of rice. That way the curry stayed hot while the rice cooked.
      If you watch my Wainstones video where I made a lamb curry, I videoed. The process more clearly. Thanks for watching and commenting.

    College valley is a great location , but tread carefully we got approached by the estate gamekeeper about wild camping, turned out he's a black belt in karate and I have always been wary of camping there now, I always head over the schill, just in Scotland
