Really good video and enjoyable to watch. Seeing the stretched stitching where the walking pole supports the tarp made me think it might benefit from what we do with our Aluxe F6 i.e. put half a tennis ball on top of the pole to spread the load and, if the ground is soft, put the other half underneath it which will also keep the handle of the pole clean. I have to confess I didn't originate the idea, I got the tip from Bob at Backpackinglight from whom we bought the tent. Cheers Mike
@@AdventureLite - very good thanks. Did think if getting the much lighter and cheaper Lanshan 2 which would have been ok for the two of us, but we have a couple of dogs - a Jack Russell and Spaniel so needed the extra space. It is very spacious particularly at floor level (being single pole) and tall in the centre ie 1.6m so standing room for my 5'3" partner and I can stand if a stoop so can get trousers on and off without wriggling! Decent sized porch too for cooking, rucksacks, boots etc.
I bought this product in late October 2019 to insure I like this design of a tarp before I buy the real thing. I received the orange model and and it came with plain old (heavy) aluminum stakes, was not seam sealed, had single stitched non-bonded tie-out reinforcement and thicker reflective guylines that do not slip. Based upon you comments, I will be treating the guy out reinforcements with sealant to both seal and to reinforce against the fabric tearing. I also just added an inner and outer tie out loop at the peak to suspend the shelter if I want and to hang a light on the interior. I would like to add the workmanship on this tent is amazing and its only downfall will likely be the material itself . It is in no way a great quality silnylon. I understand the MLD trailstar is constructed with a nylon 6.6 material with a generous coating of silicone. The MLD version of this tent is almost certainly a much much stronger and perhaps winter worthy shelter. Yet I remain happy with my pseudo semi-kinda trailstar. Thanks for the video.
Thanks for the info on your orange 'Ali-Star'! It's a perfect tarp to modify as it's super cheap. I'm tempted to add some loops on the inner to hang the 3f ul inner from...

I know it was a long time ago so if you don't remember not to worry. Thanks.
Great review. Just what I wanted. I was looking at ordering one from MLD for a 5 day Highland bash in September but they had a 16 week lead time so this is ideal. Many thanks.
Thanks, it looks like flame's creed are selling a new version with better fabric. Tell me how you get on. I did the West Highland way about 25 years ago with a hefty 3.5kg tent I bought from a Kays catalogue!
Thx. Its funny how we look back on our old kit and wonder how we managed it all. I did the South West Coast Path in '98 with a great tent, but very heavy. I think my pack started at 25kg and I sent half of it home after 2 days (including a 4 cell Maglite!). I'll let you know how the new TS clone gets on. 👍
Thanks for the review. I have used the same tarp for at least 120 nights during the last two years and it's great. Looking forward to your comparison with the original.
An excellent, well presented & very informative review 👍🏼👍🏼 I’ve just taken delivery of the latest 2019 version of this tarp/tent & i think a lot of the issues you mentioned look like they’ve been addressed? Seam-sealing is now standard, the reinforcement at the peak seems better, the line locks i think hold better with the (now) red cordage, and as you mentioned it now comes with the Groundhog-type stakes which are more substantial....as you say you just cannot for wrong for 40 quid, it’s a huge amount of space inside, and I would be hoping to get a fair few seasons use out of this 😃😉👍🏼
Thanks for the feedback! Working on the Mountain Laurel Designs vs Aliexpress comparison at the moment, but I'll make sure I review the 3FUL inner after that.
Cheers! I bought for a bit of fun but found I loved it, so much so I've bought the original (considerably more expensive!) trailstar. Looking forward to testing that out in the next few weeks 😁
Hi all, so, just had my trailstar copy arrive from china, maybe 2-3 week wait, in the midst of Coivd too, not bad. Bought from JY Outdoor on Ali express, inc a small coffin style 4 season inner, came to all of £64.24 delivered! No stakes with it, not seam sealed, needs it at the peak at the very least. Is a 20d version in light green, in its stuffsack, with guy lines, no pegs 475g, inner in stuff sack is 232g. Will almost certainly be selling my Lanshan 1 now, just so cramped in comparison, apparently very prone to condensation too, which i can't see being a problem in an airy Trailstar. BTW, tried the Lanshan 1 inner, and it fits well. Will prob get a 4 season version to help with the draughts. Many thanks to the excellent vids from Mr Adventure light, definately helped me make the switch!
Thanks for the info, I've had a look at the version you've bought and it looks good. They appear to have used a double sided silnylon so they can't tape the seams. This fabric is lighter making the tarp lighter than the one I referred to in the video. If love to hear how you get on with it!

Excellent vid, nice one. I have the Flames Creed version that I picked up mainly out of curiosity... I've never used it beyond the garden though... this has inspired me to give it a proper go in the field. Thanks - glad you liked it. I'll get to work on the 3f UL inner review soon. I love the design of this tarp but it has some flaws - looking forward to getting the original MLD trailstar for a comparison.
Hi there, I've never found condensation much of an issue with the trailstar or the clone. I think this is because the entrance at the front allows good circulation and there is so much space under the tarp so expired moisture is dispersed.
Looking at your channel, this looks like it was your first video. Excellent video. I would easily watch plenty more content from you. I'm guessing time is tight..
Struggling with time, work commitments and motivation! I don't do many 'trip' videos as I find stopping to film spoils the experience but I do plan on doing some more gear reviews at some point (terra nova southern cross, naturehike opulus 3, 3ful tyvek bag, aonijie running pack etc)
A man after my own heart! If have this tarp, I also have both the 3ful 3 and 4 season inners. To give me more options to pitch these I’ve had loops stitched on each of the seams and another one to one side of the pole seat in the peak. Oh and I also use Pacer poles and wouldn’t consider any others. A very honest review and agree with everything you said. Nice one 👍
I tie a loop in the end of the guyline and either loop it over the point of the pole or larks foot (basic knot) over the handle of the pole. I do the same with the long piece of guyline. There's a clip in my other video which shows how I do it. Hope that helps.
The newer green ones are a paler shade, a lot heavier (near on 800g), they are seam taped and the corners are better re-enforced though. Mine came with 6 of the horrible hexagonal Shepard hooks . Good video thanks.
@@AdventureLite It's light green, branded Flames Creed, ordered last September from AliExpress for the frankly ridiculous price of £27.08 (I think perhaps I took advantage of a sale/voucher). I think my version is still for sale, though I see there is now another unbranded version on AliExpress in in 15d (light green)or 20d (orange or grey) silnylon advertised as 520g & 580g respectively, so looks closer to the one you have. Shame, I would've gone for those but they weren't on there last year I don't think, though they are a little more expensive at £40ish. I think the one you have was sometimes branded under "Knot Outdoors" in 2016/17 but not any more. One thing I've seen mentioned before is that the proper MLD Trailstars are a little bigger than the AliEx ones - I'd be interested to hear if that turns out to be the case when you get your real one.
Great review! I thought it was the grey and orange that is lighter and made of thinner material, but I think there might be a difference between Flames Creed and 3F UL. @@AdventureLite that's great thanks. Choosing between 3 now. This with 3F UL inner, cloud peak 2 and mod it or the asta and 3F inner. Each one would do well but leaning to the trailstar clone for flexibility. Thanks again for your content, great stuff!
Thanks for very clear and informative videos, keep up the good work. I just ordered a trailstar clone, brand is flame´s creed in 20D nylon. I plan on using Andrew Skurka´s guyline system, that is no line-locs and instead using some simple knots to get the tarp secured. In your video, if I understand correctly, you use the same length on all guylines so that you can pick whichever one to start the set-up. Sounds like a very good idea, and so my question follows: What length cord do you use? And while I am at it, any preference on diameter? I am leaning towards 2mm dyneema. Thoughts? Thanks again and greetings from Sweden!
Thanks for the feedback, the Flame's Creed version looks like an improvement on the model I reviewed. When I replaced the guylines I cut them to the same length as the ones supplied. I'll check the length when I get. I'm not sure what thickness cord I used but if you're not using linelocks slippage shouldn't be an issue. I've not seen Andrew Skurkas system, will have to check it out.
@@AdventureLite Yes, hopefully so. As long as I receive the tarp in time, I will be able to test it in the mountains end of July. If you do get the chance to check cord length, I would much appreciate it. Here is a link to Skurka´s guy line system, I find he has some interesting information and the experience to back what he is talking about: th-cam.com/video/slOhlEmBwwY/w-d-xo.html
Yeah good point on the poles. Set at a central position they're going to be receiving a lot of downward force. You learnt the wet way. Great product. I'm always concerned about gear coming from that far away. Not sure what you think. Good review though. All the best. Mark
Hi there, thanks for the comment! I've made about 50 orders on aliexpress and I've not had any trouble. Delivery can be frustratingly slow but I've never had anything lost in transit, never received damaged goods (and never had to pay import duty 😬)
@@AdventureLite Hey that sounds good Raymond. I think I ought to have been more clear. I mean the environment. I have ordered from far away but always seem reluctant because of this. Have a cool week.
I've not used the Lanshan 2 but have used the tarptent stratospire which is similar in some ways. The Lanshan will be more like a classic tent with an inner, groundsheet etc. The trailstar is more like a tarp (no inner or ground sheet included) but will be more storm resistant as it clings to the ground like a limpit!
@@AdventureLite you can get 3 or 4 season inner tents for the trailstar now. Why I was waivering which one to get. Lanshan or trailstar. Trailstar looks cool. Like a Dutch pyramid storm tent.

Really great video, we need more content about AliExpress outdoor gear suitable for the UK. Some of it is phenomenal. I've been thinking about this trailstar copy for a while, I would have to use it with an inner though. I have a question, how tall are you? Because I'm 6'3" (192cm) and I wonder if I'll fit in the 3F UL inner, or even the tent? Thanks, keep up the good work
Hi thanks for the feedback. I'm 5'10'' and the 3ful fits me perfectly so it might be a bit small for you. As for the TS clone it will be plenty big enough for you. You might want to use a 3ful bath tub ground sheet (you can see this on the Aegismax nano review), I think this could fit you better, otherwise a lot of people use a polycro ground sheet or a bivi bag under the trailstar. I'd love to hear how you get on with the TS clone if you buy one!

I am trying to decide between lanshan 2 and trailstar. Do you have experience of both to give an opinion?
I've not used the Lanshan 2 but have used the tarptent stratospire which is similar in some ways. The Lanshan will be more like a classic tent with an inner, groundsheet etc. The trailstar is more like a tarp (no inner or ground sheet included) but will be more storm resistant as it clings to the ground like a limpit!
@@AdventureLite you can get 3 or 4 season inner tents for the trailstar now. Why I was waivering which one to get. Lanshan or trailstar. Trailstar looks cool. Like a Dutch pyramid storm tent.
A great review. I have subscribed! Nuff said...
They must have discontinued this product which is a shame because I really wanted it, looks so good! If you ever want to sell yours, I'll buy it straight away 😂

There's this one on DHgate, although I've no experience with this website.

The new model is much more similar to the MLD (double coated silicone fabric 20dD) and almost the same weight.

Its back again.
Excellent review. Not sure why you only have 37 subscribers (make that 38 now) :)
Thanks Alan!
