A half-life usually describes the decay of discrete entities, such as radioactive atoms. So in this case you are correct. He just describes it differently i think.
No there have been no changes to any of the AQA specs since 2016 so all of the vides are up to date. They did clarify a point in the Chemistry spec (calculating percentage by mass), so I did a video for that.
In our physics class we (attempted) to demonstrate half-life using dice, which were meant to represent the nuclei. Each die had one side that was red and the other five sides were white. We had to roll the dice all at the same time, and those that landed with the red side face-up had been considered to have “decayed”. It was a wild lesson
The answer is 20 seconds. From 1200 to 600 is one half life, from 600 to 300 is the second half life and from 300 to 150 is the third half life. Dividing 60 seconds by 3 gives us 20 seconds as the half life.
Let’s say we had a big block of Uranium-235 and another small block of Uranium-235. Would the half-life of both different sized blocks be the same? Would just the activity be different in size
@freesciencelessons I am struggling to get to grips with this concept. Is an unstable isotope constantly decaying? I understand that the half life of an isotope is the amount of time it takes for the number of radioactive nuclei to half but doesn’t an isotope just mean a single atom and so surely this would mean it only has 1 nucleus? Or does the half life mean the amount of time it takes for the amount of unstable nuclei within a substance to halve? Thanks.
A radioactive isotope consists entirely of unstable nuclei but we cannot know the exact moment when any individual nucleus decays as it's a random process. Instead, we find the time it takes for half of the nuclei to decay and that's the half-life. Imagine that we had 100,000 nuclei. The time take for 50,000 to decay is the half-life.

In 1 minute, the count rate changes from 1200 counts/sec to 150 counts/sec. Find the half life
The answer is 20 seconds. From 1200 to 600 is one half life, from 600 to 300 is the second half life and from 300 to 150 is the third half life. Dividing 60 seconds by 3 gives us 20 seconds as the half life.
The definition of 'half life' makes sense if we're talking about alpha decay but what about gamma for example where the no of nuclei doesn't change?
You would count "undecayed nuclei" as nuclei which had not emitted a gamma ray.
