    In this video, we look at an early model of atomic structure called the plum pudding model. We then look at the alpha-scattering experiment which led to the development of the nuclear model of atomic structure.
    This video is based on the AQA spec. If you are following a different exam board then you should check your specification. The Amazon link above is an affiliate link. @Freesciencelessons  6 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    • @imannoor9079
      @imannoor9079 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Freesciencelessons okay thank you sir, but I thought the proton and neutron discovery was Chadwicks work. Will the examiners ask about the discovery of the electron, proton and neutron ?

    • @Freesciencelessons
      @Freesciencelessons  6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Hi. Chadwick discovered the neutron but not the proton. You are required to know that. However, you are not required to know who discovered the electron or the proton. In the exam, they can give you information to read and then answer questions on. So even though you are not required to know who discovered the proton or electron, you could be given information and asked questions on it.

    How does the alpha particles being deflected necessarily mean that the positive charge was at the center of the atom?

    • @pavanramanuj5269
      @pavanramanuj5269 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      When two positive charges meet, such as the positive Alpha particles, they repel each other. This means the Alpha particles being deflected when hitting the direct centre of the atom is proof that the centre contains a concentration of positively charged mass.

    Because the centre of the atom has a positive charge, shouldn't the alpha particle bounce back instead of deflecting due to a force of repulsion?

    • @uaimen3990
      @uaimen3990 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      yeah that did happen - some of the alpha particles did deflect but because the atom was made of lots of empty space, some of the alpha particles went thru the atom and didn't come into contact with the nucleus

    • @n.a7848

      I think your slightly getting mixed up.
      The alpha particles become deflected if they are in close range of the nucleus.(so they havent hit it)
      The bounce back if they do hit the nucleus.

    From a researcher to another one: I have to say that I really enjoy your lessons. They are well structured, clear and I enjoy watching them. I also understand that you do not want to introduce too many concepts so that the lessons are easily understood and remembered. Nevertheless, I really dislike the fact that in all English schools, the scientists names are not even mentioned. This makes the subject really "arid and barren". Science has been developed through centuries by people that have dedicated their lives to this beautiful subject: why not mentioning the name J.J. Thompson who discovered the electrons and introduced the Plum-Pudding model or E. Rutherford who ran the Alpha scattering experiment with his researchers, Marsden and Geiger. What I am saying is not a criticism to you, Sir, but to the UK system of education and I'd like to have your opinion on this. In other countries like France, Germany and Italy, Scientists names are well studied in schools. It is funny and sarcastic if one thinks that most of the science that our students learn in our schools were British. Where is the acknowledgement to those that have built this subject over countless years of hard work? Thank you for your great channel

      As someone who went to School in England, I recall quite vividly being taught the names of the scientists who developed the models for that atom, and it even came up on the offcial exam, which the enitre country doing the course, will do. I remember qutie well a trick to remember one of the names that i was taught early on, that being of James Chadwick, who discovered the neutron, what my teacher at the time said was "the way I remember it is, Jimmy Neutron, Jimmy is an alternative way of saying James, and there is a character called Jimym Neutron and the Neutron was discovered by James Chadwick". Furthermore as a more relevant example. The experiment mentioned in this video was often referred to as the "Rutherford Experiment" or the "Geiger-Marsden experiment"

    • @fireemperorzuko8756
      @fireemperorzuko8756 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Don't disrespect my boy Dr Shaun without knowing the full story, he did mention their names in his other videos, I'm guessing the one about the development of the atom and also the periodic table. And yes sure the names of those who have made discoveries are important, but what's more important and what should be focused on more is how their discoveries cause a change and impact on the basis of science and the ideologies behind the discoveries. So yes I do think it's very important these legends get the appreciation they deserve but not in terms which affect the grades, jobs and even lives of millions of students, names should not determine or even affect something this important so in my opinion it should not be included into GCSEs or even testing unless you choose to do this.
