I'm surprised the 96 and 97 cars dropped back so much. If you watch the old F1 footage of those 2 season's cars on a flying lap compared with 98-01-ish, the old wider slick cars were visibly MILES faster on the apexes. Maybe the wet weather and the newer cars with higher downforce + narrower tyres (more pressure per square inch on contact patch) affected things.
Here's an interesting idea; F2004 vs F2004-powered F310B on a dry track.
