Thanks James! What is also scary is when a desperate pastor or other speaker absent-mindedly grabs one of the worship vocalist's mics from their stand. Not only do we throw off the EQ and gain tuning for that vocalist, we also have to contend with the possibility the mic itself walks away with the person. Trying to standardize and simplify the process for working it out on the fly is gold.

yeah that gives me the shivers just thinking about it

Coaching. After all, they don’t know the problem it causes unless someone tells them. Don’t be frightened to tell people stuff like that.
Make a special stand for the announcements / random speaker mic, bottom half of an old mic stand works a treat. Show them where it is and leave the mic turned on if you like, all our guys know where to turn the mic on/off, it’s drilled into them.
In short, you know how to do your job they should know how to do there’s.

Great insight and nice job breaking it down into simple straightforward ways to handle the situation.

This has been my life for over 2 years. Different speakers. Different dynamics. Different techniques. Frustrating really. But this really really helps :)

A little coaching goes a long way. I tell my speakers, don’t talk to the person next to you talk to the person on the other side of the hall, THEN hold the microphone just under your chin. All the other stuff and bob’s your uncle.
PS Great tutorial, I’m looking into this in more detail next week.

Very sound advice! It's always best to get it right at the source (the source being the person speaking into the microphone).
      Thank you very much!

We have a guy who holds the mic at his chest pointing at his chin. Thats just habit now. 😅

Clarity is king (though He is King, haha) at our church, and with a poorly treated room with bad resonances between 230-415, this is our handheld EQ (looks drastic, but it works well with most voices (also, I obviously can’t stand the bass heavy “radio voice”):
    HPF @ 208
    -4.5 @ 232 Q .7
    -6.7 @ 404 Q .8
    -7.2 @ 5.38 Q 2.3
    -6.7 @ 9.04 Q 2.4
This is on an XR18. There is the stock de-easer inserted, but it does very little before it does too much, so it is not much help, hence the HF cuts.
Thanks for this important topic, and extremely well handled…the entertainment included was an excellent bonus. 😂

Hi James. Great info! Maybe this is a video idea. Do you have or could you make a quick non technical 5 minute tutorial that we could share with speakers and vocalists that shows them how and why to hold and speak into a microphone for best results?

    • @AttawayAudio
      @AttawayAudio  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

Our system is not tuned very well so it is very “sub” heavy for vocals and those pops and plosives are super distracting. I use the dynamic eq built into the cl5 and just low shelf those louder pops and it makes a massive difference

Nice work. Clearing up the low end definitely makes a huge difference!
