That CSM would never understand because he never did 1 cycle of basic training as a Drill Sergeant and doesn't have a drill sergeant badge, that's the worst explanation and he has no idea what it's like to have 300 trainees day 1. Let him do the job alone for a few weeks and he cannot yell. Using his leadership 101 Gummi bear tactic, ask the private nicely to please wake up 0430, pvt if u want to sleep in its ok my name is CSM Thornberry and I'm here to show u the way of the Gummi bear. Ask him why doesn't ranger school become kindled gentler too. Water it all down, if you show up we give you a badge for participation. I have 1 million reasons of why this CSM is not the ambassador of all Drill Sergeants and therefore him and his Commander will not last long and it will change during the next leadership change over.
All you need is more cold water then if that were the case, maybe these guys are the ones that are just sacrificial, use some live ammo, or just call it day camp nice addition

When the bullets start flying, the enemy isn't going to care if you volunteered or not. They're not going to give you a time out. They're trying to kill you. Eff your feelings. This makes me sick. We need hardened warriors, not fat/woke civilians in uniform.
No one said that the enemy would care about those things. The only difference is that the drill sargent doesn't yell in their faces and they have to work as a team, which they have to learn how to do anyway and who knows maybe it'll work better then the original way. I went through Army Basic Training at Ft. Sill back in 2011. The shark attack only lasts for around 2 hours, literally a blip in time for basic training. At the end of the shark attack your arms are like jello from all of the push ups and overhead bag holding but it broke us down quickly to learn to listen to the drill sergeants and they are in charge.

Couldn’t agree more, and I was at Sill in 2010! It’s merely to establish the fact that the DS’s are in charge, you know nothing because you in fact know nothing!!! The 1ST 100 yards, it seems, takes soldiers who know nothing about team work, re supply missions, or anything military and making them chaotically perform something they’ve never done. Exactly. This creates focus under pressure. If war broke out, bet your bottom dollar I myself, not just the Drill Instructors, would be yelling. I wouldn’t dare fight with someone who got offended by yelling. I’d tell them to go back to base and let the real soldiers finish this
Live training is always superior, failure results in death. Some beefcake on a power trip yelling obscenities is nothing near what combat is like. Have people shooting live rounds at the new recruits or send them out into the field. Those who don't survive are weak and get culled.
Meanwhile in China, I can guarantee they aren’t “considering your feelings” at their boot camps. They’re actually training soldiers, not coffee shop servers. This is extremely sad to see.

Chinese army training is so hard that only 20% of bootcamp recruits can complete that. People in Asia are small so we have to work harder.

This is why I can't join a standard military, not because im a snowflake, not because of my neurological condition. but I have a big ego (which may be in part of my neurological condition but thats beside the point). Showing aggression will only get me to be aggressive rather than stonewall, and then i would forget the reason I wanted to show up. Maybe some medium training and i don't mind the shouting but when its all "STFU you don't matter" then its like "then why did you take me in?"
I always assumed the shouting and aggression was to try to acclimate a soldier to a high stress environment. That way they don’t break down or crap themselves in combat.
In Russia you get punched and kicked in the head as a recruit so you can get tough. In America screaming is too harsh and rude. It’s only a matter of time until Russia or China decides to invade this place just because they have no respect for us.
That's exactly why. It's about being able to carry yourself upright in high pressure situations. They're there to become soldiers, trained to kill on command, they need to be disciplined, they need to be tough, or they will die.
When I joined in 1992, I'm not sure it was called a "shark attack" but I did go through this. I think it is a right of passage because when you get to the end of basic training, you are stronger mentally and physically.
There is no such thing as shark attack in the german Bundeswehr, yet they can handle a fight. Yes there sometimes are harsh words and yelling, but from what I know (from friends who served, I personally was never enlisted) by far not as the US Army used to do. Same counts for the hell week of the Seals vs the german KSK Why do you guys think, that not yelling and shark attacking leads to soften the soldiers, when there are thousands of examples that proves you wrong

11B, Benning. I’ll never forget hustling to get off the cattle car when the drill sergeants yelled at the first guy off to beat his face. It caused a bottleneck and no one could get off. Everyone was punished for not getting off in time. Anyone with half a brain knew two things in that instant: 1) we were ALL gonna get smoked no matter what. 2) we weren’t in Kansas anymore.

Amen! I can't tell you how fondly I look back at my own BCT shark attack and the sense of pride I feel for having survived it, as well as tge rest of basic.
When I signed up - I had five living realities who all served in WWII - one in Korea - two in Vietnam - so I had a good idea of what to expect - got myself in really good physical shape (110 push-ups - 55 pull-ups - running 6 - 10 miles) - and I had a lot of exposure to firearms - cleaning arms and target practice - hunting animals (deer - fox - wild hogs) on the move - quail and wild duck taking off in seconds. I was told by my family that boot camp was a pretend version of a "prisoner of war." So I was told - keep your mouth shut - answer questions sharply - short and simple. Never laugh. Never smile (they will think you are gay) Never part your hair in the middle (they will assume you are a drug head). Basic training actually made sense to me - it was the final duty station is where the Army got corrupt - loads of lying from the top - and the buddy system was raiding the taxpayers - like off base living expenses for troops who were not married - taxpayers paying for troops to shack-up - just one example. I was not going anywhere in the landscape of boredom. So I got out and did really well. I even told the company commander - that I was certain - that the Army could win battles - but I did not think they will ever win a WAR. Hell, it turns out I was correct. I am not even going to guess at where this sissy-ass boot camp is going - but it has nothing to do with the reality of preparing for the conditions the enemy can establish. This nation will never win another war - but then as long as they stick to third world Underdogs - they can take comfort in never facing a counterattack.

The army isn’t meant for everyone to join. When you lower the standards, you lower the lack of discipline and effectiveness of the soldier. I hear new boots call their NCO “dude, bro, or man”
The purpose is culture shock, not summer camp. Its breaking down the foundation of everyone to bring them back up together. To say to eachother, "we embrace the suck together," through any situation.
This is the reason I was receiving weak ass complaining soldiers when they came to the unit though.. but then again, it’s up to us leaders AFTER they leave training to maintain and build on to what they learned. I hear a lot they changed this because we were losing too many recruits to injuries and in some cases, death.
Idk about your basic training experience, but mine didn't have a lot of "togetherness" against the suck. It was a clique based mess with groups who didn't care if they messed up the experience for the rest of us. If our shark attacks were replaced with team building exercises maybe the screw ups in the group would have actually felt invested in making everyone's life a little less horrid.

Ummm... does that guy not see, that from the get-go, these kids are completely new to the military and have not been conditioned mentally, emotionally or physically yet for its demands. This moment, this 'Shark Attack', is a brief but fundamental simulation of an intense, high alert action that every one of these kids will need to be able to handle by the end of boot camp, because by then they can be deployed, and no one is going to hold their hand. They either get with the program or get out and stop wasting peoples time, because in the end it could be a matter of life and death.
The shark attack is designed to teach recruits how to handle the extremely high stress of combat and war. If you can be more acclimated to that stress than the enemy, you’re already ahead of the game. If my child wanted to enrol, I want them to be trained to be the best and to think under pressure and come home safe. You’re training warriors, not ballet dancers.
No it's designed to test aggressive tendency in certain males. They don't want too much aggression that might make you a threat against a douche co... Cause you might punch a general or his scummy nephew.
Someone's reaction to getting yelled at isn't a strong indicator of what their reaction will be to a live combat situation. The stress and the stakes are at totally different levels
This "shark attack" is weaker and softer than what we put up with in Army ROTC and Ranger Club, and the prior service guys were laughing at how easy and baby that was. Our armed service veterans used to come out with the pride and self-respect of having overcome a challenge that many people could not. If that toughness is not built into these kids from the get go, many will spend their whole lives doubting themselves.

I went through it at Fort Benning in 82, And it gives you a sense of self worth and courage that you made it through it and helps quite frankly with the rest of the program

As a recruit in 1980, I had no problem with this. We were rookies and un organized. Within weeks, we were getting pretty damn good and by graduation it showed how good the sergeants were. They were proud, we were proud!
Also, the benefits of doing your best paid off. The Friday before our Sunday graduation, the night Sargent called the company down to formation. Said something like "if a few of you want to go on a beer run, just make sure you bring enough back for everyone and I saw nothing" I remember his patch, Big red 1. Ex Vietnam badass!!
well, adding my voice to the other 9K comments knowing nobody will hear it: having actual PT competitions on day 1 means that you start grooming the best runner / sit-up executor/ pull up guy to have a position of dominance and preference. Handing out consequences on a "reasoned" basis (you didn't do that fast enough) means that there is always going to be a tendency of recruits to say "but that wasn't fair" when they reach their breaking point. If you want to push people past their breaking point, that means you have to break them. If you can break them down on day 1, including by humiliating the many "adult shaped children" who think they are perfect, have never been yelled at, etc. well, breaking them down on day 1 allows you to start building them right up on day 2. Without any history with their drill instructor that makes it more complicated. This change is bad. It smells like it was designed by professional butt-polishers trying to position themselves for something to brag about when they are up for promotion.
Group hugs and soft actions are really nice, but not in the fucking army. If I go to the army and am going to be sent to war, then I want a professional to help me not die, not think about being nice to me. Shark attacks are the nicest things drill instructors can do, not like they are trying to do now.
I enlisted in 2010, my wife enlisted in the army back in November. I tried to prepare her for basic and she got there and said it was a joke. She was excited for the challenge but then got there, finished, and left ashamed that everything was handed out to the weak individuals for not performing. I feel bad for her because she didn’t get the true basic experience.
It changed a lot since the new command team took over. It's embarrassing. I went through a couple years ago before all of this came up and I felt like I was really challenged mentally and physically. Now we have new guys showing up to my unit that are already fat and unmotivated. Blows my mind

I was one of those socially inept kids raised on video games. I needed the wake-up call. I needed the direction. I needed this type of training to help me understand the drive and discipline required to grow up. Did I hate it at the time and go to bed on the first night wondering what the hell I had done? Sure did, but I am grateful for the experience 23 years out. I recognize just how necessary it was.
same here im 14 and love video games but ive been training for over a year so when i join the army with an 18x contract and go strait to special forces training ill be the best version of myself and i will not be soy boy dancing on tiktok
@@adrianrapier5053 it’s not really wise to go in on a 18x contract if you wash out you are assigned to the needs of the army and could get a bad job it makes way more sense to go infantry then pick up option 40 or drop your packet when available if you want to do that
As a chaplain, I sometimes worry that moving to "gentler" methods, will reduce their ability to deal with the worst situations. There is nothing easy in a soldier/sailor's life and often the more accustomed to difficulties we become, the better we can handle them. God bless those who serve.

I've began the online video series but this sense of incapability is present. What are good ways to prepare for taking on such a endeavor?
I know a young army kid who was recently disappointed at the lack of discipline and toughness of the whole experience of boot camp-young men need a hill to climb.
Not to mention that this "humiliation" isn't targeted to one specific person but the group as a whole. Going through struggles as a team is often helpful for building comradery.

The shark attack is to imitate a stressful environment, to get soldiers to learn to operate under stress. If they've never experienced a high stress situation, what are they going to do when bullets are flying over their heads and they're seeing their friends die?
I'm glad I left when I did. The difference between Army bootcamp in '89 and Navy bootcamp in '96 is night and day. I actually put on weight in Navy bootcamp. Literally could count the number of times I was punished with physical fitness drills on one hand. it was 8 - 4 PM classes and then marching maybe a half mile back to the barracks. Army bootcamp ... the drill instructors had a hill they liked to take us to for physical fitness attitude addressing. That hill was covered in grass when we started. it was nothing but dirty by the end of bootcamp. I recall near the end of army bootcamp of being sent to the hill and I made a offhand comment, "hello ground, it is me again". And even the drill instructors starting laughing. There comes a point where you just drop in the pushup position when I drill instructor walks by. I was literally reading tech manuals in that positon. After a while you don't even remember what muscle fatigue is. If you score anything less than an outstanding in your physical fitness test in bootcamp, the military did you a disservice and Uncle Sam definitely didn't get his money's worth out of you.

I served in the Australian Army, dropped out of high school half way through my final year to join. I went to the 1st Recruit Training Battalion in Kapooka, Wagga Wagga, New South Wales in 1994 and it was so much like the Shark Attack. Got off the bus after 18 hours on the road at 5 am to be greeted (lol) by the platoon commanders much in the same way as these guys in the Shark Attack, and was straight away made to do 50 push ups on my knuckles in the freezing rain (it was in July, so our winter) while the Corporals and Sergeants screamed insults at us. As soon as someone complained, which was almost straight away, we had to start all over again. At the time I thought it was cruel punishment, but I soon realized that it was to sort out the men from the mice!

It's about learning to respect authority; That you do what you are told when they tell you. I remember hating my DI's at the start but after time, I felt a respect and admiration for them. It also teaches you to listen and do things right the first time so when you are in combat or deploy, you can focus and get the job done regardless of what is going on around you.
If you can't handle being yelled at you 100% won't be able to handle being shot at. This Sergeant Major is the perfect example of the disconnect between the top military leadership and the average soldier. And that goes for all the branches of service.

no. what is happening is the top leadership have been pushing PC culture into the military for years and anyone who stands up get purged and get out while people who will not fight the changes get promoted. I heard about stuff happening a few years ago- they have slowly been taking the power to punish from NCOs because PC officers are told to be "kinder and gentler" by the Top brass- and they get their marching orders from a bunch of pukes who hate the military.

Not the whole point, but part of it. One of the key parts this wad left out of his rant against it is that you weren't yelled at about things not in your control or something you could control. This is critical in building or strengthening what is known as an "internal locus of control." TO simplify it: it teaches you that you can control things you didn't know you could.

In the heat of battle, in the mist of the screaming incoming shellfire, the rat-rat-rat of machine gun fire, the only thing you'll be only to hear is the screaming of your commander's voice. Teach it from the start, and the recruits will learn from it. It'll save their lives.

"The kinder gentler military" was also a great book! I read it back in 01 because every MOS I wanted was combat & being female meant that it wasn't going to happen. However that book really gave me a different perspective about it. (The book focuses on women in combat along with the pros & cons of it.) Sadly I chose not to join after 9/11, partly because I couldn't get the MOS I really wanted & I could see then how these wars would end up. Although I didn't think it would be this bad. God knows I wish I hadn't been right! With that said I still regret not joining but God do I appreciate all of you who did! ❤ 🇺🇸 ❤
I think, as a civilian, having that "wake up call" is incredibly important to recruits as it is designed to break negative mindset, bad habits and lack of discipline, gradually building the recruit to not only be a soldier, but a better person. Almost every veteran I have met, especially those up to the sergeant ranks are some of the best people I have known; it's funny how they are able to switch on a hardcore personality but are really standup men.
I’ve had mixed results with some veterans. Most are well adjusted, but a few of them turn out messed up once they come home. One of them was an abusive stepfather I had. Can’t fix everything in boot camp I guess.
I can't see how being shouted in the face will lead you to be a better person. I think you're overselling this shark attack thing. But I totally agree that it produces better soldiers.

The shark attack is unnecessary. It’s just getting yelled at, possibly getting permanent hearing damage because all hearing damage is permanent, and best case scenario you weed out a couple bad recruits early which would be weeded out soon anyway. There are better ways at achieving the goals of a shark tank

Listening to army story’s from my dad who served during desert storm is insane compared to my high school friends who just got out of army boot camp. My dad got beat up, got cussed out and called every name in the book, and literally ran until he puked. And he was in the US army field band! My dad nearly has a heart attack everytime you get him going over the state of the modern US army. It’s shameful to him and older veterans who served. I never hear the newer kids tell anyway where near the stories I hear from my dad. It’s insane how much softer it’s gotten. Really kinda shameful to see.

I certainly wouldn't want to be sleeping in a barracks with some unstable kid who didn't get screened out in the beginning, and instead cracks halfway through boot camp, putting everyone around them at risk. Not everyone is made for the service... the point of the shark attack is to weed out those that can't handle authority and/or stress, etc. without breaking down and potentially becoming dangerous, regardless of whether we/re in a draft or not.
The softness of training is why veteran suicides are up, even though conflicts like Vietnam and the world wars were far more stressful than today. We aren't giving our men the proper mental fortitude to do their job and come back unflinching. It is now basically on them to find it on their own.
If you can't handle being yelled at and stress, you won't do well when a battle comes your way. That's why all of Basic Training is miserable. I was an introvert up until I met some Drill Sgt's. The constant attacks are all about learning how to deal with your fears.

I’m enlisted in the Marine Corps, and I just hope that its still tough, that the DI’s are allowed to scream at me when I go in August. I want to earn the title the same way the Marines before me did.
It's soft now. You aren't going to have the same experience that Marines had 5-10 years ago when Drill Instructors still put hands on you. Hazing in boot camp has been under the microscope. Multiple recruit suicides have led to this as well as politics being injected into it. I wouldn't recommend the military to anyone at this point due to the political climate and its effects.
@@exodustimes4266 The physical standards still remain intact, but the Marine Corps as a whole is getting softer due to politics being injected into it. I have seen a sergeants career get completely derailed due to a junior Marine feeling "hazed." There had been multiple accusations of hazing which led to investigations. None of which produced anything credible. Nonetheless, this particular Marine was removed and moved elsewhere within the unit. Keep in mind the accused Marine was an E-5 with at least 8 years in as well as a combat deployment. The junior Marine(s) making the accusations had less than 2 years in. Although this is anecdotal, I'm sure you could find multiple instances similar to this one. This particular sergeant ended up committing suicide. Obviously there was more going on, but his career being hindered definitely didn't help matters.

I have 1 million reasons of why this CSM is not the ambassador of all Drill Sergeants and therefore him and his Commander will not last long and it will change during the next leadership change over.

Army here 26 years, this makes simple sense, it's logical, nothing complex, how is it so hard for superior leadership in the Army to understand that? Glad I am retiring in 6 months.

I went through Army Basic Training at Ft. Sill back in 2011. The shark attack only lasts for around 2 hours, literally a blip in time for basic training. At the end of the shark attack your arms are like jello from all of the push ups and overhead bag holding but it broke us down quickly to learn to listen to the drill sergeants and they are in charge.
I was in the Army, wasn’t even aware that there was a “shark attack”. I just thought that yelling and harassment was a part of basic training/boot camp.
Couldn’t agree more, and I was at Sill in 2010! It’s merely to establish the fact that the DS’s are in charge, you know nothing because you in fact know nothing!!! The 1ST 100 yards, it seems, takes soldiers who know nothing about team work, re supply missions, or anything military and making them chaotically perform something they’ve never done. Seems like a cluster F to me!
If a DI needs that, that his recruits listen to him why was he chosen for this post in the first place

Live training is always superior, failure results in death. Some beefcake on a power trip yelling obscenities is nothing near what combat is like. Have people shooting live rounds at the new recruits or send them out into the field. Those who don't survive are weak and get culled.
Meanwhile in China, I can guarantee they aren’t “considering your feelings” at their boot camps. They’re actually training soldiers, not coffee shop servers. This is extremely sad to see.

This is why I can't join a standard military, not because im a snowflake, not because of my neurological condition. but I have a big ego (which may be in part of my neurological condition but thats beside the point). Showing aggression will only get me to be aggressive rather than stonewall, and then i would forget the reason I wanted to show up. Maybe some medium training and i don't mind the shouting but when its all "STFU you don't matter" then its like "then why did you take me in?"
I always assumed the shouting and aggression was to try to acclimate a soldier to a high stress environment. That way they don’t break down or crap themselves in combat.

When I joined in 1992, I'm not sure it was called a "shark attack" but I did go through this. I think it is a right of passage because when you get to the end of basic training, you are stronger mentally and physically.

11B, Benning. I’ll never forget hustling to get off the cattle car when the drill sergeants yelled at the first guy off to beat his face. It caused a bottleneck and no one could get off. Everyone was punished for not getting off in time.
Anyone with half a brain knew two things in that instant:
1) we were ALL gonna get smoked no matter what.
2) we weren’t in Kansas anymore.
The experience INSTANTLY put us all on the same level. We all became one and the same at that moment.

When I signed up - I had five living realities who all served in WWII - one in Korea - two in Vietnam - so I had a good idea of what to expect - got myself in really good physical shape (110 push-ups - 55 pull-ups - running 6 - 10 miles) - and I had a lot of exposure to firearms - cleaning arms and target practice - hunting animals (deer - fox - wild hogs) on the move - quail and wild duck taking off in seconds.
I was told by my family that boot camp was a pretend version of a "prisoner of war."
So I was told - keep your mouth shut - answer questions sharply - short and simple. Never laugh. Never smile (they will think you are gay) Never part your hair in the middle (they will assume you are a drug head).
Basic training actually made sense to me - it was the final duty station is where the Army got corrupt - loads of lying from the top - and the buddy system was raiding the taxpayers - like off base living expenses for troops who were not married - taxpayers paying for troops to shack-up - just one example.
I was not going anywhere in the landscape of boredom. So I got out and did really well.
I even told the company commander - that I was certain - that the Army could win battles - but I did not think they will ever win a WAR.
Hell, it turns out I was correct.
I am not even going to guess at where this sissy-ass boot camp is going - but it has nothing to do with the reality of preparing for the conditions the enemy can establish.
This nation will never win another war - but then as long as they stick to third world Underdogs - they can take comfort in never facing a counterattack.

This is the reason I was receiving weak ass complaining soldiers when they came to the unit though.. but then again, it’s up to us leaders AFTER they leave training to maintain and build on to what they learned.

Idk about your basic training experience, but mine didn't have a lot of "togetherness" against the suck. It was a clique based mess with groups who didn't care if they messed up the experience for the rest of us. If our shark attacks were replaced with team building exercises maybe the screw ups in the group would have actually felt invested in making everyone's life a little less horrid.

They either get with the program or get out and stop wasting peoples time, because in the end it could be a matter of life and death.
The shark attack is designed to teach recruits how to handle the extremely high stress of combat and war. If you can be more acclimated to that stress than the enemy, you’re already ahead of the game. If my child wanted to enrol, I want them to be trained to be the best and to think under pressure and come home safe. You’re training warriors, not ballet dancers.

This "shark attack" is weaker and softer than what we put up with in Army ROTC and Ranger Club, and the prior service guys were laughing at how easy and baby that was. Our armed service veterans used to come out with the pride and self-respect of having overcome a challenge that many people could not. If that toughness is not built into these kids from the get go, many will spend their whole lives doubting themselves.

As a recruit in 1980, I had no problem with this. We were rookies and un organized. Within weeks, we were getting pretty damn good and by graduation it showed how good the sergeants were. They were proud, we were proud!

Also, the benefits of doing your best paid off. The Friday before our Sunday graduation, the night Sargent called the company down to formation. Said something like "if a few of you want to go on a beer run, just make sure you bring enough back for everyone and I saw nothing" I remember his patch, Big red 1. Ex Vietnam badass!!
well, adding my voice to the other 9K comments knowing nobody will hear it: having actual PT competitions on day 1 means that you start grooming the best runner / sit-up executor/ pull up guy to have a position of dominance and preference. Handing out consequences on a "reasoned" basis (you didn't do that fast enough) means that there is always going to be a tendency of recruits to say "but that wasn't fair" when they reach their breaking point. If you want to push people past their breaking point, that means you have to break them. If you can break them down on day 1, including by humiliating the many "adult shaped children" who think they are perfect, have never been yelled at, etc. well, breaking them down on day 1 allows you to start building them right up on day 2. Without any history with their drill instructor that makes it more complicated. This change is bad. It smells like it was designed by professional butt-polishers trying to position themselves for something to brag about when they are up for promotion.

I enlisted in 2010, my wife enlisted in the army back in November. I tried to prepare her for basic and she got there and said it was a joke. She was excited for the challenge but then got there, finished, and left ashamed that everything was handed out to the weak individuals for not performing. I feel bad for her because she didn’t get the true basic experience.

I was one of those socially inept kids raised on video games. I needed the wake-up call. I needed the direction. I needed this type of training to help me understand the drive and discipline required to grow up. Did I hate it at the time and go to bed on the first night wondering what the hell I had done? Sure did, but I am grateful for the experience 23 years out. I recognize just how necessary it was.

As a chaplain, I sometimes worry that moving to "gentler" methods, will reduce their ability to deal with the worst situations. There is nothing easy in a soldier/sailor's life and often the more accustomed to difficulties we become, the better we can handle them. God bless those who serve.

I know a young army kid who was recently disappointed at the lack of discipline and toughness of the whole experience of boot camp-young men need a hill to climb.
A soft army is a defeated army. When I went through basic training, this is what i expected and most of us needed it.
Not to mention that this "humiliation" isn't targeted to one specific person but the group as a whole. Going through struggles as a team is often helpful for building comradery.

I'm glad I left when I did. The difference between Army bootcamp in '89 and Navy bootcamp in '96 is night and day. I actually put on weight in Navy bootcamp. Literally could count the number of times I was punished with physical fitness drills on one hand. it was 8 - 4 PM classes and then marching maybe a half mile back to the barracks. Army bootcamp ... the drill instructors had a hill they liked to take us to for physical fitness attitude addressing. That hill was covered in grass when we started. it was nothing but dirty by the end of bootcamp. I recall near the end of army bootcamp of being sent to the hill and I made a offhand comment, "hello ground, it is me again". And even the drill instructors starting laughing. There comes a point where you just drop in the pushup position when I drill instructor walks by. I was literally reading tech manuals in that positon. After a while you don't even remember what muscle fatigue is. If you score anything less than an outstanding in your physical fitness test in bootcamp, the military did you a disservice and Uncle Sam definitely didn't get his money's worth out of you.

I served in the Australian Army, dropped out of high school half way through my final year to join. I went to the 1st Recruit Training Battalion in Kapooka, Wagga Wagga, New South Wales in 1994 and it was so much like the Shark Attack.
Got off the bus after 18 hours on the road at 5 am to be greeted (lol) by the platoon commanders much in the same way as these guys in the Shark Attack, and was straight away made to do 50 push ups on my knuckles in the freezing rain (it was in July, so our winter) while the Corporals and Sergeants screamed insults at us. As soon as someone complained, which was almost straight away, we had to start all over again. At the time I thought it was cruel punishment, but I soon realized that it was to sort out the men from the mice!

It's about learning to respect authority; That you do what you are told when they tell you. I remember hating my DI's at the start but after time, I felt a respect and admiration for them. It also teaches you to listen and do things right the first time so when you are in combat or deploy, you can focus and get the job done regardless of what is going on around you.

Not the whole point, but part of it. One of the key parts this wad left out of his rant against it is that you weren't yelled at about things not in your control or something you could control. This is critical in building or strengthening what is known as an "internal locus of control." TO simplify it: it teaches you that you can control things you didn't know you could.
Screaming in their face makes them stronger. I learned in my lifetime that fear is a good motivation.

"The kinder gentler military" was also a great book! I read it back in 01 because every MOS I wanted was combat & being female meant that it wasn't going to happen. However that book really gave me a different perspective about it. (The book focuses on women in combat along with the pros & cons of it.)
Sadly I chose not to join after 9/11, partly because I couldn't get the MOS I really wanted & I could see then how these wars would end up. Although I didn't think it would be this bad. God knows I wish I hadn't been right!

I think, as a civilian, having that "wake up call" is incredibly important to recruits as it is designed to break negative mindset, bad habits and lack of discipline, gradually building the recruit to not only be a soldier, but a better person. Almost every veteran I have met, especially those up to the sergeant ranks are some of the best people I have known; it's funny how they are able to switch on a hardcore personality but are really standup men.
I’ve had mixed results with some veterans. Most are well adjusted, but a few of them turn out messed up once they come home. One of them was an abusive stepfather I had. Can’t fix everything in boot camp I guess.

The shark attack is unnecessary. It’s just getting yelled at, possibly getting permanent hearing damage because all hearing damage is permanent, and best case scenario you weed out a couple bad recruits early which would be weeded out soon anyway. Listening to army story’s from my dad who served during desert storm is insane compared to my high school friends who just got out of army boot camp. My dad got beat up, got cussed out and called every name in the book, and literally ran until he puked. And he was in the US army field band! My dad nearly has a heart attack everytime you get him going over the state of the modern US army. It’s shameful to him and older veterans who served. I never hear the newer kids tell anyway where near the stories I hear from my dad. It’s insane how much softer it’s gotten. Really kinda shameful to see.

I certainly wouldn't want to be sleeping in a barracks with some unstable kid who didn't get screened out in the beginning, and instead cracks halfway through boot camp, putting everyone around them at risk.
Not everyone is made for the service... the point of the shark attack is to weed out those that can't handle authority and/or stress, etc. without breaking down and potentially becoming dangerous, regardless of whether we/re in a draft or not.
The softness of training is why veteran suicides are up, even though conflicts like Vietnam and the world wars were far more stressful than today. We aren't giving our men the proper mental fortitude to do their job and come back unflinching. It is now basically on them to find it on their own.
If you can't handle being yelled at and stress, you won't do well when a battle comes your way. That's why all of Basic Training is miserable. I was an introvert up until I met some Drill Sgt's. The constant attacks are all about learning how to deal with your fears.
I was always told that the Yelling was supposed to hone in your fight or flight response and to prevent you from freezing up if things hit the fan.

I’m enlisted in the Marine Corps, and I just hope that its still tough, that the DI’s are allowed to scream at me when I go in August. I want to earn the title the same way the Marines before me did.

It's soft now. You aren't going to have the same experience that Marines had 5-10 years ago when Drill Instructors still put hands on you. Hazing in boot camp has been under the microscope. Multiple recruit suicides have led to this as well as politics being injected into it. I wouldn't recommend the military to anyone at this point due to the political climate and its effects.

@@exodustimes4266 The physical standards still remain intact, but the Marine Corps as a whole is getting softer due to politics being injected into it. I have seen a sergeants career get completely derailed due to a junior Marine feeling "hazed." There had been multiple accusations of hazing which led to investigations. None of which produced anything credible. Nonetheless, this particular Marine was removed and moved elsewhere within the unit. Keep in mind the accused Marine was an E-5 with at least 8 years in as well as a combat deployment. The junior Marine(s) making the accusations had less than 2 years in. Although this is anecdotal, I'm sure you could find multiple instances similar to this one. This particular sergeant ended up committing suicide. Obviously there was more going on, but his career being hindered definitely didn't help matters.

This Sargent Major was one of the recruits that cried under his bunk for being yelled at after the shark attack.
