When the Jane’s were about to sign their record contract, Perry turned around to the others and announced that either they gave him the lions share of royalties, whether he was involved in writing the songs or not, or he was leaving the band and it was over. You have to remember that he was 10 years older than the rest of the band, and his father was a hard nosed businessman. For the others, who were just nowhere kids with raging drug habits and Jane’s Addiction was their only chance of escape, they had no choice but to agree. Perry knew this. Perry was always that guy.

    I was 10 years old, autistic and bullied just about every day at school. I came home every day and watched music videos alone until my mom got home a few hours later. I distinctly remember the host of Much Music (Canada's MTV) announcing "this is a brand new video from Janes Addiction and it is so weird! I love this!" and they played this video. I was glued to the TV and couldn't believe these people were being weird on purpose and people loved them and I didn't feel so alone in the world. Also, the programming repeated every 4 hours at the time so I knew the video would be on again just after 8pm and I was ready to dance.They've been my favorite band ever since.

Between them and Bob Marley we often danced through lab experiments. (I still think that taking careful measurements is more accurate (or at least more fun) when you can dance through it. And when the conservative administrators were busy elsewhere NoFX was also added to the mix.

    You can hear a little David Lee Roth in Perry’s vocals. This breakdown absolutely reveals how a creative band like Jane’s can make noise individually to paint an amazing sound when it is all put together. No band like Jane’s Addiction.

    Ritual de lo Habitual is one of the most musically satisfying albums in the rock genre that I own. (1600+ albums) Avery is a frickin genius and if they didn't have a him as a bass player, they wouldn't have gone anywhere. Three days and Then She Did... deserves more attention than this song.

    • @TheMcSomething
      @TheMcSomething 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s a wall to wall masterpiece. Every note from every instrument matters, but the production is so dense that each time you listen, you can hear new things. On top of that, depending on what system and/or medium you’re listening with, this can change the way you perceive the music as well. It’s almost like a new experience each time if you pay attention. I think it contains Perry’s best lyrics cumulatively and each instrument shines in every song. There’s a lot of bands from the 1986 to late 90’s era that are celebrated, but I’m not sure if any of them made an album as thoroughly impressive as Ritual. Just my opinion after listening to it for 32 years.

      Exactly!

    • @exquisiteoath
      @exquisiteoath 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Ok, no disrespect intended at all but what exactly are you comparing it to? The best songs from 25 years ago are certainly heads and shoulders beyond most of the music being released today, but also heads and shoulders above and beyond most of the music that was released that year. This isn't a time based argument... it's just a darn good song from a darn good band. Take a serious look at any of the music that isn't top 40 right now... it won't take long before you find some wonderfully complex and interesting things.

    • @Duke_Silver
      @Duke_Silver 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I`m comparing it to the songs that on the radio right now. Fair comparison IMO since this song was also played on the radio a lot.

    • @exquisiteoath
      @exquisiteoath 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Not entirely sure it's fair... there was a lot of generic not good rock on the radio then as well. There's a certain perceptual shift that happens with time and distance. 99% of radio music has been easily forgettable ever since the beginning so, we forget it. I mean look - "I'm too sexy" by Right Said Fred is a fun song.. I remember signing along to it when I was in High School but it hasn't stood the test of time nearly as well as Been Caught Stealing and nor should it. That year there were probably a dozen great songs that are memorable and had great airplay. 25 years from now we'll probably remember a couple of gems from 2018 as well.

    One of the best things about this song's being a hit is that it was a goof--not exactly a novelty song, but definitely not something that JA would have *ever* chosen for radio on their own. Warners told them, "This is the single," and they were like, "No way," but they also decided to roll with it, because they had never had any particular success with their singles, and they figured that it wouldn't go anywhere anyway---so no use putting up a fight.
    Whoever picked it for radio play knew what they were doing. This song still a staple of "classic alternative" radio. Rick, you're right; it helped break them on early 90s radio that played generally lighter, more whimsical, poppier alternative music--mostly British music that didn't have a home on American music but wasn't aggressive enough for the rock channels, and REM's singles, stuff like that. Perry's girlfriend Casey's video was so successful that it beat out Jesus Jones for Best Alternative Video at the VMAs, although in early 91 most of the band (except for sweet Dave Navarro, bless his heart) thought the show was stupid and didn't show--Perry blew it off to do drugs with a girl he picked up at a 7-11. Stay classy, Perry . . . .

    Every time this song comes up in my shuffle I try to pretend I've never heard it before to appreciate how great it is. Now I understand why it's so brilliant a bit more -- those 7th chords!! And the bassline. Man, that bassline. One of the greatest basslines of any song, ever.
