      The thing is too, it’s not JUST the England team. Our players start for England, Denmark, Ghana, USA, Colombia; and we’ve got youth players playing a lot for youth national teams like England and Ireland. I think people write Palace off sometimes without actually seeing the successes we’ve had, and our international players are a great example.

    american palace fan here. my total thoughts (here goes):
    i've been a palace fan for 11 years now, basically half my life. i've only seen them in the premier league, so i'm only recently learning about the history, fan culture, and financial issues. thus my take may be a bit more uninformed than most lifelong fans.
    what attracted me to crystal palace was the passionate fans, the pride in being from south london and a very diverse area, and the strong sense of community. we've got one of the (if not only) few official ultras groups in england (holmesdale fanatics). no matter how good or bad palace play, that since of community is always there and can't be bought or sold.
    that being said, i agree with hopkin's takes. maybe half the prem is made of teams who've been in for 11 straight years, especially since we got promoted. if you're looking at the last 25-30 years, this period is incredibly successful for us. if you're looking at the last 10 years, like i am, it's also been good, but has rightfully left palace fans yearning for more.
    we've been the definition of mid for a while: a really good game here, some bad games there, some meh games in between, just to finish mid table. but next season will be the first season i've been optimistic and looking up the table, thanks to glasner and our recruitment.
    even though we rarely sell players for money, we still made incredible purchases in january. and sheesh, we've got a coach who won the europa league two years ago and has proven himself and european level team in germany! glasner even said "my goal is to go unbeaten", and we did just that. that was cold, and that's the type of ambition we need. i can't remember any previous manager stating that type of ambition with confidence. him and vieira are the only two managers to try and harness the athletic and technical ability of our squad, and we've finished 11th and 10th under them respectfully.
    i feel like next year is our year to push higher. like you said, teams have been in the prem for half the time we have, gotten europe, but only
    villa (and arguably brighton, unfortunately) has actually stayed up there. we've been stable in the prem, and now we can take risks and push on.
    i went to my first ever palace game in march, at home, against luton. everything i loved about the club was solidified then and there. ill never regret choosing to support palace, and i hope glasner and freedman can take the club to new heights. up the palace! 🦅

    As a Palace fan, I don’t think we are “boring”. We experience as many highs and lows as other teams, but our form just always levels out in the end. While I’m being biased, to call Palace boring for spending 11 years in the Premier League with a few good cup runs seems harsh - these last 11 years have arguably been the most positive in the club’s history.

      @@jadonsideman6849bro, everyone says that about their own club, theres always 1 aspect of a club where you could say that a certain club is the best in , take palace, for example, I'm an "outsider" , being an Everton fan, but looking in on the club, it looks so well run, and a really good fanbase aswell, brilliant youth aswell, same with brighton , really good scouts finding youth all over the globe, and then developing them to be a really good player, and my club, everton, really, really brilliant fans, unbelievable atmosphere for every game, and the style of play dyche as got us playing ( not saying dyche's style of play is the best in the world ) has us fighting tooth and nail for every tackle, 50-50, everything, and that's all the fans want to see, the players trying, aslong as your shirt is drenched in sweat, to show how much you have tried and gave everything, that's all we wanna see, it's all we have ever wanted to see. But, long story short, fans r gonna be biased towards their own teams, and that's completely fine, we all do it, palace are a really well run club, with good youth, brighton have brilliant scouts, and great development coaches, and everton have brilliant atmosphere , with a coach who plays to match that

    As a Palace supporter, I think we’re anything but boring. There’s a really cool energy at Palace where (for the most part), we can feel hopeful about almost every match we play, but we also don’t feel completely destroyed when things don’t go our way. I’d also say that supporting a club is about a lot more than final league position, and this club has a real identity and energy that only exists at Palace. There’s something really cool about following young players as they progress, even if our league position doesn’t always necessarily progress. We’ve always had uniquely exciting, creative attackers, like Bolasie, Zaha, Eze, Olise, etc; and we’ve always been one to kill a couple giants every season. It’s a lovely thing to be a part of.
    As per the point about hope, I think our solid foundation is the basis of a lot of our hope. Our board has built a resilient club that, if nothing else, will almost certainly never have a catastrophic decline like some other clubs that have previously been in our position. This club doesn’t want to be a flash-in-the-pan, couple great seasons then back down sort of team. Our hopes come from becoming a real fixture in the English game. That’s why the club has put huge money into the academy, and it’s why they’ve been working for so long to redevelop our stadium. The club understands that long-term infrastructure is more important than short term reaches into limited success.
    I love having delusionally high hopes at the beginning of a season, but this team under Glasner really does feel special. Losing Olise was always the reality, we were prepared for it and will build well with the money we get. The core of the squad is better than it’s ever been, the attitude is positive, and the atmosphere is right. I think we’ll be a great squad next season, but the beauty of being a Palace supporter is that even if we’re not great, there’ll be something to hope for. Something to look forward to.
    Also can’t stress enough how wonderful it is to see our women’s team promoted to the WSL. Every side of this club keeps improving and it’s so fulfilling as a fan.

    The 2nd half or 2016-17 made me fall in love with the club. It went from being quite dire under Pardew, then Big sam does what he does best and brought beleif back into us and we had a great run defeating liverpool, Arsenal & Chelsea (albeit we had a lucky handball go our way).
    Despite De Boer not getting results out of the squad, he did do one thing that Palace struggles at times to do, and that is bring youth into our defence, i dont remeber him signing any attackers at all, and some did become key parts of our starting xi like Jaïro. I think we're moving on from being bog standard mid-table. It's funny that we still have Ward on our books he's like the relic of the last 10 years of Palace.

  • @IFlipRizla
    @IFlipRizla หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    As a Palace fan I wouldn’t call us boring at all. If you only look at our league finishes then that will only tell you a tiny window of our seasons. Every year is a rollercoaster, it’s never a given that we finish where we do, we go through long spells of not winning games and then have sudden upturn in form either from a new signing, player returning from injury, a new manager. Every season we get a couple of great results out of the big sides and cause an upset. We’ve had some of the most exciting talents outside of the top 6 clubs for years. We’ve done this all whilst spending under budget, something a lot of clubs don’t do and just buy there success or end up failing miserably and in debt, points deducted etc. yet we have signed the championships most promising stars consistently, upgraded our academy to an extremely high standard, have started the expansion of our ground and it’s all come together at the perfect moment, now is the time to kick on. We have a very exciting manager and group of players, we are financially healthy, this is something a lot of clubs underestimate but it means we have buying power and don’t have to sell our best players unless it makes sense to us.
    I’m convinced Glasner is the man to take us out of the bottom half and everyone is going to want him to become their manager. I fear that if we do punch to far above our weight that the vultures will be circling.

  • @Nerdyfootballfan26
    @Nerdyfootballfan26 หลายเดือนก่อน +12

    As a Palace fan I think you’re forgetting about the uncertainty surrounding managers and players leaving, what’s going on in the boardroom and the fact that in most of these seasons we’ve actually been in relegation battles for a lot of them till the last few months. I mean in 17/18 we only had 4 points from the first 10 games having lost the first 7 and still stayed up!
    We’ve also had some great FA Cuo runs in 15-16 and 21-22 which haven’t been boring!
    For the first time since promotion I now believe we finally have genuine hope of getting European football.
    Yes there has always been an element of frustration and anger watching other teams overtake us from the championship and some like Burnley making Europe. Many of us feel like there’s no reason why we couldn’t have been there if we’d shown more ambition in the transfer market.
    Having said that if you’d offer this in 2010 or even in 2013 after the okay off final we’d have all taken it in a heartbeat. We are just so proud of where we’ve come from and enjoying the journey wherever it takes us.

    • @pjkerrigan20

      The other side of the conversation with regard to the transfer market is that our board has never overspent, never overstepped itself. It sets us up to build more and more into the future

      @@Nerdyfootballfan26 I mean have you seen how much investment the club has put into the academy, and how much has had to stay earmarked and unspent to keep our stadium redevelopment viable? Now the academy complex is among the best in England and the stadium redevelopment is actually commencing. We’re not gonna be in Everton’s situation last season with financial penalties and the unsure situation of a new ground bankrupting us. I think sometimes football fans as a whole can be really short-term thinkers, but our board are mostly in it for the long term (Textor’s weird tho f*ck that guy)

    • @Nerdyfootballfan26
      @Nerdyfootballfan26 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@pjkerrigan20 investing in the academy is all well and good but how many have we actually seen break into the first team? The ones that have the likes of AWB before he left and Mitchell only got their chance through injuries. The new stand was proposed in 2025, why has it taken nearly a decade to even start work…thank god things are finally looking up tho. But I do fear losing Olise.

    • @pjkerrigan20
      @pjkerrigan20 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@Nerdyfootballfan26 the stadium development stalling has a lot to do with complex development permits and the ongoing conflict with Sainsbury’s regarding the sale of the land. The club isn’t to blame for the stadium taking forever, the endless bureaucracy of trying to build new things in England is. As per the academy, I know we haven’t had that many breakthrough young players recently (and some of that is down to Roy being bad about young players), but I still think you’re not considering how long it takes for this kind of thing to pay off. Look at how successful our U23 and U18 teams have been. Our youth teams are doing better than their peers at big clubs. That will eventually translate. Everything takes time.

    Well observed piece and good collaboration. Palace have a strong local identity and are community conscious. I wouldn't swap this for anything as imho, football has become so corporate. Give me Selhurst, a four sided ground with character over any other super stadium any day.I'm also truly unenvious of City's (or any other big club) successes one bit and would not swap our position for it as it's all about how you achieve your minor successes and celebrate them, such as beating Man Utd on a good day. If a National State came in and bought Palace and we then were able to challeng for the league or champions league, where would be the satisfaction in that. You can't buy happiness or love ❤💙

    They have a Champions League level coach right now with a Europa/Conference level squad, I'm surprised Glasner hasn't been looked at by the biggest teams in Europe, what he did at Frankfurt was nothing short of remarkable and its no wonder he's got them smashing some teams that would be considered bigger than them. If they only lose Olise and for a big sum and bring in some wild talent with that money I wouldn't bet against them getting 4th place in 2024/25 because of not having to play European football.

Remember, Stoke wanted to have higher ambitions after years of playing dross football under Pulis and hired Hughes and brought in Champions League winners in Shaqiri, Arnautovic, Muniesa, Affellay and Bojan to push for greater heights but didn't have the proper foundation for it and got relegated five years later and barely surviving the championship six years since their relegation from the Premier League. If Palace wants higher ambitions they need a solid foundation and it's going to take time before they push on. Stoke build a decent squad but lacking the solid foundation hence they crumbled and never returned to the Premier League since.
