Years ago I worked in a gun shop that had several BFR's in stock, including one in .450 Marlin. People would ask what it was for. I'd look them on the eye and say as seriously as I could, "Leopard Seals"

Mine in 460. Purchased for fun and the variety of ammo that can be fired through it. Used for deer hunting and plinking. Love my six guns. The 460 chambering does recoil!!
I honestly think that’s the most logical chambering. 45 colt, 454 casull, and of course 460. The only other thing I’d consider is the 500 JRH in a short cylinder.
what I love about Hickok is that he never changed in his attitude, has more subscribers than most channels but always stayed humble and very educational.
My very first hunting rifle was a Model 94. My father bought it used, secretly reblued it & refinished the wood. It was his Christmas gift to me that year. 45 years later, I still cherish it.
I've been watching your videos for probably the last ten years and they almost always bring a big smile to my face, LOL Really enjoy watching how much fun you have making the 2-liters and other things explode, much like I do! The anti-gunners, and others, always concentrate on the "uses" of firearms, whether that be "assault weapons", self defense, or hunting. I've always felt the main purpose for most people is just having a relaxing, enjoyable time on the range, whether it's by yourself, with your kids, Dad (mine is still with us and shooting together is some of the best fun we have since we both gave up working on cars in the late 80's!) or close friends. Just relaxing therapy when you get done with all of your "have-to's". I haven't been able to get out to shoot much the last year or so but watching these helps a little.
@gaychinee its a huge difference between rifle and handgun hunting hunting with a handgun is a big challenge the slightest grip movement can move the impact of your bullet way off most of us handgun hunters like the game up close and personal
@gaychinee The challenge.. Also carrying a large caliber handgun while hunting is a good safety precaution. If a bear charges you, good luck putting a charging bear down with your scoped .300 win mag rifle. You need something with close range sights and the knock down power to stop the worst case scenario animal run in.
Thanks Hickock. Ive so far resisted that handgun. But it has stayed in the back of my mind since i first discovered it. Looks like im gonna have to have one now. Your having way too much fun with it.
If ever I was to wake in a cold sweat from a nightmare I could not remember, well....; it could not be worse then being in your sights. You make shooting look so easy it is realy therapeutic to watch. 😊
I used to believe that when a round cooked off in a fire, the bullet didn’t go anywhere. On Dec 30 2023 my house caught fire. I lost 70 firearms, and three thousand rounds of 9mm, and 500 rounds of 308 I had purchased for my Christmas present. The next day my neighbor got in touch with me, and showed me a 308 boat tail bullet that had penetrated his bathroom window. It went through screen and 3 panes of glass plus my bedroom window on the way out. It had zero rifling and was the same type that was in the new case. So the bullet traveled 32 feet, and penetrated 4 panes of glass and one window screen. It didn’t tumble through any of it. He found it laying in his bathroom sink.
500 rounds going off all at once should be a lot more than just one cooking off alone. Ammo inside an ammo can should should explode more forcefully too since the can would contain the burn to let it build up before releasing.
@@svbarryduckworth628 it sounded like the 4th of July. Only one round was found to have caused any damage outside the home. If anything hit the inside walls of the home, that was the least of my problems. The room where they were stored was gutted by the fire. Who said anything about ammo cans? They were all in boxes.
A lot of folks seem to seriously underestimate just how much of the recoil in a firearm comes from the reciprocating mass of a semi-automatic action. Naturally with a revolver there's no such reciprocating mass, and with a big beefy boy like this the mass of the gun works in your favor to help mitigate how hard it kicks.
That’s funny. As a firefighter, I can’t tell you how many structure fires I went to where people had ammunition. All the hunters and gun guys didn’t worry about it-because without a barrel and/or chamber to direct the pressure the lead ball might pop off, but it isn’t going very far. There isn’t enough pressure. The people who didn’t know anything about guns (like the reporters) would make a big deal about it, especially if a box of shells pop off, they go running for cover while the firefighters just shrug their shoulders. Propane tanks? That’s a different story, but bullets? Meh. They usually have them in a closet, drawer, or gun cabinet anyway.
I've seen know the owner of the shop where these are made and have seen them made. I can tell you with confidence they are made VERY well. They're made out of excellent steel and with the best cutting tools on the market.
A friend of mine had a (i think) contender in 30-06. We took it to a range, for him to try out. He was right handed. So I stood to the left of him and had to be at least 3 yards back. When he shot it knocked my baseball cap off. I just laughed at him when he asked me if I wanted to shoot it, lmao

I've never shot the 30/30 but do own a few of the others. The 500 S&W with full tilt hand loads can be painful (the bfr can take loads that are a bit rough on a smith). The 45/70 is comfortable with trap door loads and still quite manageable with marlin level loads. The two cylinder 50AE/50JRH is probably my favorite, plenty of power and comfortable to shoot. Think of these as ruger super blackhawks but made much more tight.. All are accurate and well made. They're worth the price difference over the ruger. Ebner
I had one of these years ago. The way to eliminate case setback and cylinder dragging is to swab the chambers with alcohol and give the ammo a wipe off to. ANY oil in the system results in dragging and case setback whereas a a very oil free chamber will allow the case wall to grip well enough to not force the case head back. oil actually makes the problem worse.
Had a 30-30 barrel for my TC Contender (single shot). My memory is it DID recoil. Thankfully a friend "had" to have it and I traded him something I wanted more for it.
I had the same gun and i went to shoot it at the gun range. The range officer took an interest in it and I encouraged him to try it out. He shoots it and I asked him did he want to shoot it again? He gave me a pained smile and said Im good.
I got ahold of a box or 2 of Core Lokt that had several rounds that snapped in my 94 Winchester. I believe Remington let some bad ammo slip through a few years ago.
Yep I have a 30-30 pistol, but it’s a TC Contender with a 14” bull barrel and a scope. Great thing about the Contender is I can load spitzer bullets and with a 14” barrel it’s a like short rifle that fits in a shoulder holster.

A friend of mine had a Thompson Center pistol in 45-70. He was a small guy and couldn't shoot it more than a few times. I tried it and the recoil wasn't that bad.
You can hand load 110 HPXT. I size them for 30-30 but anyway way less recoil and more velocity for plinking. Would do well in that gun. Vaporizes a 2 liter...

For IHMSA Silhouette I bought a T/C Contender in .30-30 with a 10" barrel for Production class. Most used the 14" barrel for Unlimited. With a relatively light T/C, recoil with factory 150gr rounds is substantial and the powder is too slow for that short barrel. That's what started me reloading. I'll bet that BFR is heavier.
Had one in 45-70 and the cylinder would tighten up and sometimes certain brands of ammo would lock it up. Found out there is only .003 head space and some 45-70 rounds would vary by .005. I carefully file the recoil shield/ firing pin area an additional .003 and it would run fine.

Only Hickok45 could shoot a .30-30 revolver one handed and have it recoil so gracefully...
Honestly compared to the 500 mag or the 45-70, this revolver looks highly functional. Might be a good hunting option with a scope.
Poetry in motion!
I don't get how he does that.. even a .357 magnum is so snappy in my hands. Maybe I gotta roll with the shot more?

God I would LOVE to have a revolver like that. Not because it's particularly practical, but purely because of how badass it is.

It's neat but pretty impractical. A 30-30 from a handgun barrel is weaker than a 44 magnum with the same length barrel.
