I never played MSX back in the 1980s, although I do remember seeing the systems in a couple of computer shops (and Boots!). It's something I need to try out more, as there is an excellent homebrew scene creating impressive new games. There were a couple I had not heard of, so that is cool.
MSX is such a fascinating platform! I played it on emulator in the early 2000´s, and now I have the Konami MSX Antiques collection for Sega Saturn. There are loads of interesting games, I´m mostly familiar with the Konami games. I highly recommend the sequel to your favourite: Kings Valley II: The Secret of El Giza. There is an MSX1 version of it and the audiovisual update of the concept is fantastic. I even prefer the MSX1 version due to the use of colours.
Really nice selection of games and some lesser known gems. There’s a good home brew conversion of Kings Valley on the Spectrum, if anyone wants to give it a try!
Loved the video. Even though I grew up with the MSX1, I was unfamiliar with most of these titles. I only had a few Konami carts back in the day, but fortunately quite a few Japanese cart games from other companies (including Namco and Taito) were released on cassette by local Dutch publishers. Anyway, you asked for more recommendations and I can highly, highly recommend Knightmare and Knightmare II: The Maze of Galious. Two more brilliant Konami games. The first Knightmare is a really fun vertical shooter in a mythological fantasy setting, while the sequel is an amazing action adventure that plays like a platform game version of The Legend of Zelda with a huge castle to explore, puzzles to solve and dungeons to find. I think the first one remained an MSX exclusive, but The Maze of Galious was also ported to the Famicom.
Thanks for the recommendations. I do have a copy of Knightmare but sadly the cartridge almost never loads 🙁 I'm pretty sure I've played Maze of Galious on the Famicom too, though it was some time ago.
Thanks for this video, really enjoyed it! You mentioned how the music for Nemesis 2 was pushing the base MSX hardware, there's a catch though, this is not base hardware, the Nemesis 2 game came with an additional sound chip (SCC) on the cartridge!
Kings Valley 2 was released with improved graphics and sound for both MSX 1 & 2. Maze of Galious was one of the top games. Decent UK developed exclusives Shark Hunter, The Wreck and Desolator
I bought a toshiba hx10 whilst still owning a spectrum. Unfortunately games were few and far between and I had a snake cartridge game and a couple of tapes, can’t remember what they were but looked exactly like my speccy. I loved the look of the machine but a month later I saw hyper sports on the C64 in a local computer shop and that was it. Sold the speccy and traded in the msx for a new 64. Like yourself I later found them to be an interesting concept and machine. But now are too rare and collectible to warrant getting one again. Another tip top video sir.
I think that was probably a wise move at the time - as I said, the UK games library for the MSX wasn't good. The good games are unfortunately very expensive now so emulation may be your best bet.
Great review! Did you prepare what you would say in advance? A nice subtle change of narration from the silverbird games. I like both styles. Some really good games in your selection.
Yes, for these top ten videos I write a "script" of sorts and record the voiceovers separately from the footage. So there's a bit mroe detail about the games and a lot less rambling, but it does always sound a bit less genuine because I'm reading it.
This is a really nice list. I've not played any of those games before but they look enjoyable. I might take a leaf out of your book and see if I can acquire an MSX though I'd be more inclined to go for the MK2 model. Also 30 carts is nothing to sniff at mate!
Some Korean and Taiwanese developers modified simpler MSX games to be compatible with the Sega SG-1000 or the Master System\Mark III. I've modified a Master System of mine to run a few of these conversions, such as Dr.Hello a korean Dr.Mario clone.

Nice to see some MSX stuff, those top 5 games look great. I had recently played King Valley on the C64.
Yeah, I need to check that out now I know it exists 😆

I'd love to get King's Valley II but it looks like it costs £150+ to get a copy now so I may have to resort to emulation.
I knew nothing of the MSX until I got my first Raspberry Pi a few years back. I grew up on Commodore. But MSX is one of my favorites now.
Excellent list! The MSX is one of my favourite systems so it's always great to see videos about it!
Glad you enjoyed it!

Cool video! You definitely need to get an msx2 for sure!
I'd love to but I think they cost at least £250 now, with games at least £100 each, so I think my window of opportunity is long gone! 😆

Ah, I wasn't aware of that. I did think the music was exceptionally good! Thanks for correcting me 🙂

Thanks for the suggestions 🙂

@@witchfinder1976 agreed.

I hope you have a hefty bank balance if you're thinking of getting an MSX2 and some cartridge games. They are not cheap these days!
@@witchfinder1976 yeah I just checked eBay and you’re right, they ain’t cheap. I don’t think the missus would be happy if I got one of those! 😂😳
They were porting Aliens to the Famicom but it never came out. There's a mostly playable rom of it out there
Yes, I have seen that and probably should've mentioned it in the video.
