    thanks Donny Im in canada and have a 2 stroke 25 hp 1986 mercury pretty well the same as yours it was a pull start but I managed to turn it into an electric start by scourcing the parts works good but is tempermental when comes to starting so I will have to do some carburetor work as Im sure thats the reason, you video is the best out there explaining everything hope you have a more detailed video on the carburetor serviceing thanks again

    Hey just wanted to let you know that your gear box needs new seals because the oil is a milky colour which means there is water in it.

    hi donny -----i do most of my own servicing--------15 hp yamaha 4 stroke ----but don t trust myself to do carburettor------every 3 years i send the outboard off to have the carb cleaned in a sonic bath------rran like new when it came back this year---but only managed to use it once

    • @donnywilcox
      @donnywilcox  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks ploughboy.. good idea getting the carb done in a sonic bath. I started in 1975 stripping the carb on my first motorbike.. so have done in many times since. Although Im not a great lover of 2 strokes..they are easy for me.. I would be lost with EFI technology now

    Awesome video! Just got one and the first time removing the prop… stripped the nut😐

    • @donnywilcox
      @donnywilcox  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Aww..Sorry to hear that James..its easy done though and I never understood why it didnt have a locking nut ..hope you got a new nut easy enough

    • @jamesrichards5998

      @@donnywilcox thanks! How tight do you do it up? Never had a plastic nut on any prop I’ve had before!!

    • @donnywilcox
      @donnywilcox  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jamesrichards5998 Hi again ..I just screw the nut up until there is no slop if I try to pull the prop back and forward.. then possibly 1/4 turn onto that. It does seem a bit strange..but remember when underway the prop is forcing itself on..not off..and the prop splines stop it from spinning.. so it doesnt need much torque or it just strips. I do the same kind of torque as my spark plugs..hope all that makes sence. I have done many thousands of miles with the one plastic prop nut and no issues whatsoever as long as I dont overtighten and strip the thread

  • @ct1762

    you forgot to molly-lube the driveshaft splines! but other than that perfect job! PS you can use regular dish soap for the impeller. i used to use marine grease, and switching to soap has made it so much easier to install impellers it being that much more slippery and all. cheers from the USA!

    • @galaxys7650
      @galaxys7650 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You actually want to use lubriplate which is designed for water pump impeller lubrication. This lubriplate grease NEVER washes away with water and will stay there forever to always provide lubrication for the impeller, especially on that first start up.

    • @galaxys7650
      @galaxys7650 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I meant to say Triple Guard. Not lubriplate. Evinrude makes the Triple Guard grease. It is truly designed for water and definitely should be used instead of trailer grease

    • @ct1762
      @ct1762 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@galaxys7650 you can use triple guard, but if you get some in the relief hole it will cause issues.

    Hi Donny, great video!
    I have a 1997 25hp mariner 2 stroke and need to reassemble my tilt lock and shallow drive. Finding info online or even photos is difficult.
    Next time you have your engine out do you think you could send me some close up photos of the mechanisms? Particularly where the springs seat on both sides???Thanks! 🙂

    Very nice Donny. I live near the Great Lakes in Michigan and we have crystal clear fresh water running through the cooling system. My 1997 Mariner 25 runs like new to this day and I have owned it for nearly 24 years. The trick in the US is using the right gasoline. The alcohol blends will destroy an outboard, so we buy "rec gas" for $1.20 more than the expensive Biden Blend that is full of alcohol and they run perfectly.

    • @donnywilcox
      @donnywilcox  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Brian ..yup in the UK we are getting 10 per cent ethanol in the fuel come autumn. Means I will have to spend more to get the better stuff too.. its life I guess..any way for them to make more money and we have to pay :-o

    I was wondering was there something missing on my 20 mariner, to I saw this clip. Only a nylon nut holding prop on? Should I lock it up with a second nut or is this setup okey ?

    • @donnywilcox
      @donnywilcox  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Corsur..I used to think the same..but no..its only the one big nyloc nut that holds it all on. I guess the prop spinning tends to tighten it ? and that is why. Most other OB s have split pins etc..but not this model of Mariner..Its done thousands of miles and never come off so I dont worry about it now:-D

      Hi Ben..I cant remember exact measurement and I no longer have the boat. It was one of the older Quicksilvers so it was a short shaft OB. The newer Quicksilver with the rounded cones ..(instead of the older pointed cones) takes a longshaft ..or so the adverts say. Hope that helps

      Its called the "Anode Trim Tab" if you google that you should find something suitable. It is a small adjustment "tab"to keep the boat running straight due to the torque of the propeller which can slightly turn the boat. Outboard will work fine without it but you do want the anode as it stops the outboard corroding..hope that helps
