This as been all over Tik Tok and grown on TH-cam. What a powerful and attention grabbing song by Oliver Anthony. Lots to talk about in Rich Men North of Richmond, both lyrically and vocally. I do focus more on the vocals and how they compliment the song and message.

Watching your face, You went in to analyze the vocals but still felt the message. He has a great ability to inject the feelings of anger, sadness and frustration into his words and make you feel what he feels. I'd call that a mix of folk and hillbilly blues delivered with perfection.

You put it so well. Seeing what he caused her to feel just washes over her face. She couldn't hide her emotional response. Obviously this is the draw of the song. You can't help but feel the same frustration he does at the lack of care from his government.

He has referenced Hank Williams Jr. as one of his influences, who i might note also has a conversational approach in his delivery. Oliver (Chris) also responded to many who had called his music "Appalachian" by saying he was raised in the Piedmont, not in Appalachia; but where his geographical location and life experience does differ, there are undeniable echoes of mountain folk music in his style. His guitar is a Gretzch resonator, the metal plate was designed to amplify the sound in the days before electronic amplification. The major brand selling these resonators is Dobro, so many folks refer to them by that name. The sound is very reminiscent of pedal steel guitars.

The last time I saw a story teller just stand play their guitar and sing from their soul with no gimmicks or fancy backing about the desperation of living in abject poverty and trying to escape it was Tracy Chapman in her song Fast Car. She became a super star because it resonated with so many people and she was the real deal. Oliver / Christopher has taken it even further, exposing the dark side of our men and women in suits rulers who have sold their souls and wish to crush our spirits. That is why this is an across the board smash hit, he sings the truth from the soul and has brought the evil ones into the spotlight of the masses. God is speaking through this man with the Holy Spirit and everyone can feel it, that's why we cry when we hear this song and we have to hear it over and over and over........

Pretty amazing story....First time recording with a real microphone. Virginians have a unique accent...Nothing like WV, NC, SC, GA Etc... For Jen....Geographically he is referencing the rich politicians north of Richmond VA in Washington DC.

Thank you Jennifer. Your review comes at this from a different angle. There are plenty of critiques of the lyrics but you explain it from the gut which is where it comes from anyway.

This song is so amazing because it reaches so many people in a non political or racial way. Its the voice of so many hard working people world wide really, because so many of us know the struggles of making the most money we ever made and being broker than we have ever been. You speak so proper so I was curious if you would even be able to understand him. I'm so glad you did this video. I loved that jaw drop on the second verse because of the lyrics you clearly wasn't ready for. Us country boys don't water down what we want to say.

His singing is in the Scots-Irish folk tradition. They settled in Appalachia and other rural areas, far from centers of power. Their music reflects self-reliance, sorrow, and quite a bit of resentment. Think of this song as the discontent in the background. Or perhaps annoyance at the things that folks with no values apparently value.

Love all of your content normally Jen but couldn't finish this one cause you just seemed so uncomfortable and thrown by some of the lyrics. This is definitely one of those songs where the singing comes 2nd to its message

I noticed when i used to live in the south and they really pronounce the H in words like what where why when who. Hank in king of the hill’s accent is a prime example of this. You can really hear the H.

Sigh. If only people understood what is happening.
A government that operates on behalf of corporate interests in the development and implementation of social, economic and foreign policy is Mussolini's original definition of Fascism. But you will need to find a dictionary printed before 1972 to find that definition today.
The last ten years are basically an anthropological copy to the roaring 20's. As the artist Will Rogers said back in the day, "The money was all appropriated by those at the top, in the hopes that it would trickle down to the needy. Mr Hoover didn't realize that money trickles up. Give it to the folks at the bottom and it will be in the rich mans pockets before night fall, but at least it will have passed through the poor fellows hands."
This neo-liberal fairy tale economic model that we have been following since the Reagan era? Is nothing but a fascists wet dream. No business in history has ever hired anyone, unless they could not meet the demand for their goods or services. They do not create that demand. The consumer does. People with enough money in their pockets for more than just beans and noodles are the ones who drive the economy. We are the ones who are responsible for job creation. NOT THEM!!!

I was scrolling through TH-cam, on my iPhone 8+ and I saw this video. It instantly grabbed my attention because of the title, “OLIVER ANTHONY Rich Men North of Richmond | Vocal Coach Reaction & Anal…”
Now, I knew there weren’t no way that it was what the title said. I know how TH-cam cuts off the title if it’s too long and I figured that was the case. I was looking to see how people around the world were reacting to the song anyway.
Besides, I thought that someone should mention to you how the title could get cut off and the unfortunate results. That way you could be careful not to put words in that cut off spot that don’t represent reality, when they get cut in half. 😅
    Great video 👍
