"Outside of work I would drink, I would get absolutely stoned, and I would sit around and try think about anything but what it is that I really needed to be doing." So many people are just like this and its what makes him so relatable.
My brother showed "North of Richmond" to me randomly one day, and I was listening but only half-paying attention at first, doing dishes. The first few seconds when I heard "I've been sellin' my soul, workin' all day..." I turned the sink off and was focused on the video. His voice! ❤ I'm glad I watched it; his face and eyes reveal a deep pain that lives there now. I can relate. Such a raw talent, I'm most definitely a fan.
I find his speaking voice just as calming as his singing voice. Thankyou Oliver for getting a 'protest song ' out to the masses. It's been a long time comin'. ❤
I'm British and I really like appalachian country and outlaw country music, I find it very relatable despite being from a different culture to my own. This song is incredibly moving and powerful, and it is great to see such a humble and honest bloke have this rapid success! I wish him all the best and will be listening closely mate! Respect to Joe for providing a platform for greatness
@hgf44876 yeah man, my best mate moved to Christiansburg VA, so I've been over there a few times. I mean this neither negatively nor positively, but it is very different from British culture
It’s crazy because I never imagined a Brit liking outlaw country. It’s so uniquely American and braggadocios I figured it would be written off as pompous Americanism. Cheers from across the pond lol.
I live with my friend who's Iraq and Afghanistan veteran, he suffers from ptsd after he saw all his friends die in front of his eyes. He struggles everyday but he's a strong man and I try to support him as much as I can. He loves country music and I ended up becoming a fan myself. If you ever end up playing in UK please let us know as seeing you live would be an amazing experience. And I do pray everyday just so you know brother. Stay real Anthony! Much love!
Does your friend now think it was worth it? I mean getting fooled by your government "fighting for a good cause". Having your friends dying and lifelong trauma and all was for nothing. Just a lie to keep your weaponindustri and military machine running. How many fu.cking made up wars does it take for Americans not to join the army? Defending your own country is one thing but you are messing were you shouldnt have been messing. The puppetmasters behind the strings get richer and more powerfull and missguided and manipulated people like your friend gets to pay the price.
Pretty nice, as an old guy, to see a young man like this being humble, well-spoken,talentented, honest about his struggles and generally "relatable" to Americans! Well done, Chris! Your family past and present is and should be proud of ya!
The only thing that's sad here is how people are projecting their political "team," or trying to fill in their own message. Here's the message. POLITICIANS don't care about us. Let's just leave it there and not make this kid(young man) become someone who divides instead of what his song SHOULD and IS doing, which is UNITING. Great song, message, everything.
Absolutely. Oliver Anthony is a voice for conservatives everywhere. I am so glad he is on our team, we need all the help we can get in our fight against the democrats.

To those who are still seeking, still questioning, still not sure about their faith, here's an invitation. Understand that we, as humans, are limited. We often make mistakes, go astray, and lose our way. It's not about perfection; no one is. As it is stated in Romans 3:23, "For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God." Recognize that actions alone won't bring ultimate salvation. It's not about counting good deeds against the bad. Ephesians 2:8-9 teaches, "For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast." Believe in the transformative power of love and forgiveness embodied in Jesus Christ. He laid down His life so we could find ours. The Bible states in John 3:16, "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life." True change and enlightenment come when we turn away from our old life and towards a new one - one guided by compassion, love, and humility. Acts 3:19 says, "Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord." Express your faith, not only in words but also in actions. Embrace love, kindness, and righteousness, just like how Jesus lived His life. As Romans 10:9 suggests, "If you declare with your mouth, 'Jesus is Lord,' and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved." Consider baptism, a symbolic gesture of your new journey, your decision to leave the old behind, and embark on a new life in Him. Matthew 28:19 encourages us, "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit." Lastly, remain steadfast. Consistency in following Jesus and His teachings is the key. As Jesus says in John 14:15, "If you love me, keep my commands." This is not a demand but a warm invitation. An invitation to explore, to understand, and to experience a love that transcends human comprehension. A love that saves, heals, and brings life.

I don't even really know enough. But it's just this weird thing I have I guess haha
Hopefully, people realise that this talented guy and the sentiments in his song, resonate with BILLIONS of people worldwide. The elite and crazy globalists are in the minority, along with the woke mob. They will not win. Good will defeat evil.
To those who are still seeking, still questioning, still not sure about their faith, here's an invitation.
Understand that we, as humans, are limited. We often make mistakes, go astray, and lose our way. It's not about perfection; no one is. As it is stated in Romans 3:23, "For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God."
Recognize that actions alone won't bring ultimate salvation. It's not about counting good deeds against the bad. Ephesians 2:8-9 teaches, "For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast."
Believe in the transformative power of love and forgiveness embodied in Jesus Christ. He laid down His life so we could find ours. The Bible states in John 3:16, "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life."
True change and enlightenment come when we turn away from our old life and towards a new one - one guided by compassion, love, and humility. Acts 3:19 says, "Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord."
Express your faith, not only in words but also in actions. Embrace love, kindness, and righteousness, just like how Jesus lived His life. As Romans 10:9 suggests, "If you declare with your mouth, 'Jesus is Lord,' and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved."
Consider baptism, a symbolic gesture of your new journey, your decision to leave the old behind, and embark on a new life in Him. Matthew 28:19 encourages us, "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit."
Lastly, remain steadfast. Consistency in following Jesus and His teachings is the key. As Jesus says in John 14:15, "If you love me, keep my commands."
This is not a demand but a warm invitation. An invitation to explore, to understand, and to experience a love that transcends human comprehension. A love that saves, heals, and brings life.

When truth is sung, it just goes straight to the soul and resonates with so many people.

I absolutely love your message. We need so many more talented, caring singers like you. Shinedownis is also fantastic about caring for each other and stopping the hatred in our country. Thank you, God bless you ❤
This type of guest (and the way Joe chats with these types of lesser-known guests) is what I enjoy most from the JRE. Thanks for getting together and doing this, and for sharing with the public.
Easy to root for normal folk who make it with talent, hard work, and determination.

This is the happiest i've been in awhile to see an episode. This is GOLD! Congrats Chris(Oliver)!
"A lot of the anxiety for me came from just feeling like I was running out of time"
Man I'm 37 and I feel this _so damn much_ . I feel like I've wasted my life in a retail job I hate. I'm nowhere near financially stable. I feel trapped. The depression is very, very real and very arresting.
Edit: Thank you so much for the kind replies, guys. I really needed it.
You're gonna work it out, never give up.
You need routine, don't drink. Workout make a plan to accomplish whatever u want reasonably attainable etc. And hang out with ppl with your same goals ideas etc.
Simon, what got Chris through it was Jesus. The same Jesus that has gotten hundreds of millions of people through poverty, depression, war, family death, prison and tragedy.
Matt. 11:28-29 "Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls."

He shared his heart. There ain't nothing better in this world than a guy trying and sharing their best music. Stay true young man. You touch my heart bless you.
The song sucks.
Nothing but respect for this man, gotta love Oliver and his positive message. Great songwriter too.
So Glad I found this interview. Thanks for doing this. Chris is such a humble man. Glad that the world has found a connection to his music, great
Found it? Number one podcast with one of the most popular songs out right now? That’s like saying “I was flipping through channels and found this game called the the Super Bowl”.
Nice!

IT is you!! Don't ever change!!! Don't worry about the the rest! It's you and it's your own music. I don't ever want to hear your a click off on the click track! You Go Brother! Thank You!
Chris, you are a legend! So humble and real and respectful. I love that your voice isn't "polished" and that you don't wear fancy costumes or have back up singers or a big band. Just you in the woods with your dogs and a guitar is simply magic! Keep it simple, stay true to yourself and God and enjoy the journey!
Keep writing your own songs and don't let labels get control of your music.
Right now you are embodying the American dream and the world is loving it!
God bless you and yours.
He's a Big scumbag that stands with corporations and the current administration.
Came to a small town here in VA this weekend. Practiced his set behind the PD and hung out with the cops for hours. Walked up and down the town and visited all the shops. Ended up signing and taking pics in some fragrance/candle shop or something. He’s a super chill guy
Thanks for sharing that. That was awesome.
Of course he's a normal super chill guy. That's why he's successful.
People are tired of celebrity culture. Anything the opposite will always gain traction.
I feel like this couldn’t have come at a better time for me. every night I’d get home, get stoned and procrastinate.
That song brought me to tears and helped me realize I’m not the only one dealing with all these issues. First Time in 2 years I’m over a week sober, well tiny slip up last night but I’m feeling good about quitting. He wasn’t the only one helping me in that moment but the song really got me thinking about making the best out my situation instead of drowning in my sorrows
You can do it!
I love being sober, is hard at first but now, almost 22 years away from my last drink, I am nothing but grateful :)
I was drinking 3 handles of vodka a week. I quit before my love quit me. I still have a drink now and then but for the most part I'm sober.
Gods bless you on your journey, you can do it! I promise you you have support and someone loves you.
People have been saying stuff like this for decades even centuries that are just like him. Why is he any different?
He's here right now? Don't be obtuse@@TheMrCC21
Extremely satisfied with his success, he definitely deserves every blessing heading his way!
You’re exactly 100% correct on anxiety! I have suffered with it for about 10 years. Just now getting it under control. Not a lot of people understand it.
They don’t…
You cannot help but love this guy. It seems like the hardest thing to do sometimes is to show our true characters, in fear of being truly seen and judged- and yet… when someone does (like this) they’re almost always the person that lights up the room. Get out those guitars you bought during covid and let’s make some light, y’all!
Ayo let’s go! 🎸🎉
I disagree
It's wild to see how much more his demeanor lights up when he's talking about his family & music. This guy is something special. 🙌
His description of anxiety is spot on 👍 everyone has stress in their life but with anxiety whatever the issue is it consumes every aspect of your life leaving you terrified broken and alone with a constant feeling of doom unable to change anything
I feel you brother.
What's amazing to me is he's the same age as my son. And his music is on spot, he's not singing about anything new but he brought a voice to it . I hope he continues making his music. I personally enjoy it .
I've spent days on TH-cam listening to Rich men north of Richmond and watching all the reaction videos. I've held back the tears every time. We all felt that song. The good Lord gave us this song at the perfect time. God bless Mr. Anthony. Keep being you brother.
Thank you. Glad I am not the only one
It's called emotional incontinence. Get help. Also, if you need a song to tell you how to feel, that's doubly pathetic.
It makes me think of my father so yes I cried.
The anxiety part hit hard. I'v had a hard time trying to explain the feeling to my loved ones , but he says it perfectly.
I was holding back tears listening to this song, this anger that boils inside of me when I look at the world around me has driven me to isolate myself in more ways than one because it’s really getting to much to bare … Oliver was nice enough to let me know that he understands that pain, in a world full of music that try’s to mask this truth with cheap thrills and empty candy coated lyrics Oliver delivered something with unreal substance in a medium that everyone can access … amazing performance, thank you for speaking on our behalf of the 99%
You have to go through or have gone through stuff to write a relatable song/story and I appreciate Chris’s waisted time to come up with such profound music! Thanks for being a real person Chris and thank you for having him on Joe. 👊😎
for real. _100%_ correct man
He got hurt on the job, so for 6 months he was out if work. He also is living a life now of sobriety. Living in a camper with his dogs, I've not heard of him having a girlfriend. He had time. 😉

A great example of what Oliver Anthony is talking about is Chalino Sanchez. He didn’t have a beautiful voice according to every record label he turned to and got rejected A LOT, but his singing and lyrics were so raw and real, that decades after his death, every corrido band you can think of has tributes of his songs and try and emulate his singing. Rawness is a powerful and alluring thing.
I always valued authenticity over everything else. Music is beautiful when it's honest.
Autotuned by the numbers trash evokes zero emotion from me.
Chalino lol of all examples 😅 love it tho
can we get chalino on the podcast with joe?

Beautiful soul. Glad you're where are sir. And that song is for us, the workers. And Thank you Mr. Rogan for realizing how important & impactful this guy is. He is pure natural. The way music is supposed to be. That's why I love your podcast.
Oliver is so refreshingly honest, humble and authentic. Even the podcasting format where everything is about political themes and narrative. He always seems to bring it back to his own practical experiences and life story. Not about politics, not about outrage, it's about humanity.

Absolutely! Oliver Anthony is a genuine human being
This man made it to Joe Rogan show within two weeks from that very truthful song. I hope he continues to make it. People like him deserve to make it big.
I just love how he clowns the Republican party for using his song at the debates when he said the song is about all those people on the stage.
