The biggest problem I experience with this topic is that people get so upset if you say a game is good, but you don't like it. There's a lot of games that I'm not into, but I would never call them bad games. I feel like there's a distinction there that people should really understand.

Not sure exactly how to compare, but my mother taught me that if you don't enjoy a book by page 100, stop reading it.

Happens to me with some rpg's that I haven´t played yet. I stopped forcing myself trying to "muscle" through them and instead, whenever I have time to play a game, I go with something "I really like to play" at that moment.
Time is too precious and I understand first hand that sentiment of not liking something that is otherwise liked by anybody else.
It's not the game's fault, it is just not (or past) "your time" to really feel it (or force yourself to feel it, which is worse).

Glad you featured Earthbound in this, for me that's the game everyone says is must-play and I just can't get past "meh". Everyone croons about how whacky it is and idk I think I've had my fill already of over the top whackyness. I probably would have loved it if I knew about it in 90s. I mean, I did, I had that ad from Nintendo Power that made it seem like a gross out game haha. Oh well, that's fine because I think people should play the _actual_ best game of all time which is Super Mario Bros RPG Legend of the Seven Stars. Same. I know lots of people love the game but it has never appealed to me even a little. Particularly in the graphics department. Earthbound! I am very picky when it comes to RPGs and when I was young it didn't appeal to me because it was so different than others. Now that I'm older I decided to give it a try because it's so different. It's not without it's flaws, but what it offered was well worth the dozens of hours to play through it.

This was when Nintendo and Sony had some kind of promotion where if you bought their system and didn't like it, you could return it for a full refund. Nice video!
I totally agree with your opinion on that, and it took me some time to get there I have to admit.
I've started playing retro games to expand my knowledge as a game designer, so I've made lists of "must have" games for each console. My goal was to play them all to get all the nice things about them and reuse them in my own games. And I felt this kind of pressure to like these "must have".
But in the end even from the point of view of playing retro games to get inspiration for creating new games (not only for fun), it's still a good idea to focus on games you like, it will make your new games even more personal and unique. The same way your collection is more personal and unique if there are only the games you really love in there.
Thanks for your work and your way of making me think a lot at each video!

    Dude, awesome video.
This FOMO feeling you're describing here has been the bane of my gaming existence for the last several years. I find myself spending much more time researching games, watching reviews and buying instead of actually playing. And when I DO play, it's something that's highly regarded but I don't even like, which leads me to feeling guilty and losing the will to game.
Lately I've been trying to approach the issue differently: I'll try a game, and if I don't feel a connections, I just return it to the shelf and pick up something else. I can always return to it if I want to, it's not going anywhere. After a few games like that I'll find something I like that actually is fun and makes me glad I tried it out. It's a process.
Funny you mentioned Rayman as something from your backlog: It's my favorite game of all time, but most of people's criticisms of it are valid (difficulty, lives system, checkpoints). It's special to ME, and that's what counts. Same with you and Rocket Knight Adventures, which I find to be pretty but uninteresting (don't kill me).
Thanks for this video, it's good to know I'm not the only one with this issue weighing down on me.

Interesting because I've never felt pressure to "like" a game, today or in the past. Perhaps it's because while I love gaming, I am pretty casual about it as well, as are my friends. Perhaps it is also the fact that I don't bother creating some identity or lifestyle for myself around gaming, and I don't feel like I'm part of a "community" in that sense. On to the meat of the video: I am glad that you showed some gameplay of Earthbound. I had it back in the when it came out and loved it. I do not think I could get through it now though. It is too long with a simple gameplay loop that would not keep my attention today. Also, your point of liking a gift was spot on. When I was young I was given Renegade for the NES as a gift. I liked it and even beat it. However, it was not a good game. Boring and repetitive.
Chrono Trigger is pretty short game by SNES RPG standards so that should go smoothly for you.
I want to get back to Super C. I picked up the Contra Anniversary Collection recently on steam and want to beat that one. I never had it back in the day but I did play Contra (NES) to the point I could beat it without the Konami code.

I enjoy the 2D Sonic games, but there is no precision platforming on offer. The object is speed. To your main point, I don't feel pressure to play games retro or otherwise. I know what I enjoy most and usually those games are arcade derivatives and in the modern day decidedly non "Triple A". Super Smash Bros. however, is a series many people around me rave about.
