Even this rather silly video explains that most of the somewhat archaic posts are "honorary" or ceremonial" which means that those who receive payment receive a "stipend"c which is probably that same amount as it was four or five hundred years ago - i.e. a piffling amount, but the honour of the post recognises their skills in those areas. It is easy for many to confuse "the Queen" (a person) with "The Crown" (a post) monarchs come and go, as they are human, but the crown is a continuous tradition and as such is where all ceremonial things and places are "owned" (The Queen doesn't "own the crowns, or most of the palaces, and other premises. The wearing in of shoes may sound ridiculous to some, but our ageing HRH attends many functions where she is obliged to walk or stand, and she merely ensures that she is able to meet the requirements. The job of taking care of the clocks is an honerable job. I was in the US Navy for 20 years and one job I did as an extra duty was to call the time number on telephone. Set a old fashion watch to the correct time and go into the Commanding Officers office and set the wall clock to the correct time. I did time before he came into work. With all the duties of Queen Elizabeth office she would need the correct time available to her staff and herself.

These are all simply modern jobs, with ancient titles. It's just traditional, whereas the trend now is to go for more important sounding job descriptions. For example an old fashioned 'Bullshitter' might be described as 'A documentary maker'.

While I assume that if the Queen instructed her Chief of Staff to make changes to anything mentioned in this posting, it would be done. That said, I doubt that she cares one way or the other for much of this traditional stuff. She inherited almost all of it, actually "owns" almost NONE of it... and will pass all of it on to her successor. It's the British people who want it and fund it. Don't blame Elizabeth II.
@@300books Oh, I understand she inherited several estates and other property and businesses, and certainly she's a long way from destitute. My point is that much of the "theatre" surrounding royalty - the gold carriages, the palaces (Buckingham and Windsor among them), the Crown jewels, vast art collections, the state banquets, etc., are NOT owned by her but by the British people. The queen, I understand, lives rather frugally when she's allowed to. I've heard her state that she rarely wears jewellery unless it's required as part of some costume. She's worth far more to the British people than she costs them.
@@antisimanticath : The queen personally owns Balmoral Castle, Sandringham House, and Marlborough House, all worth millions and millions. However, she does NOT own Buckingham Palace or Windsor Castle. According to Business Insider, the queen's private assets are a least $600 Millions. Thank you so much for politely responding to my comment. It is really nice to know that these beautiful items are reworn by the Queen herself. It seems the majority of times we don't get to see the lovely dress underneath the coats. Very kind of you!
harpers1niter And thank YOU for your charming reply. @@tommoncrieff1154 I have seen the book and it has the best photo (in my opinion) of the queen ever. Standing with her hands in her pockets in a cream tweed shift dress pretending to be a model, its absolutely charming.

Joyce Randall Junior members of the Royal Family work for a living in some business or other. The late Princess Margaret's son is a furniture designer and cabinet maker. Senior members of the Royal Family have various formal duties to carry out depending on their status. The most senior member, next to the Queen is Prince Charles, he, as heir to the throne is now deputising for the Queen in many of the 'out-and-about' duties. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge also represent the Queen, visiting various parts of the country or abroad. There can often be several 'representation' visits in one day. These duties would have been shared by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex had they done what was expected of them and stayed in the UK.
Just visit the official website of the Royal Family and you will understand what they do. And definitely check before you ever leave for a trip to London as you may be able to see them in person while there! They work tirelessly for their country and their is usually one or more out and about working on any given day in London. Fun to see them in action!
I wondered about the new shoes. Usually when I buy a new pair, I will wear a pair of socks and walk around the house a few times until I know they are comfortable before I wear them out in public. That way I can manage the blisters, I am sensitive with my feet though.

They believe their viewership is mostly American so they use American terms. I'd very much rather it be announced in pounds than dollars.

Guess I'm a Royalist. I do not find any of these "ridiculous". The majority are honorary, and bound up with tradition. As an historian it pleases me that traditions are upheld. They are what makes a country different. What a bland world it would be if everywhere was the same. The other jobs are actually important. Maintaining the royal collections is important because of their historic significance. Would someone say that a person doing the same job in a museum is also ridiculous? The royal collections do not belong to the Queen, but to the Crown, and, therefore, ultimately to the country. It is not popular today to be a monarchist. It needs pointing out that the "I don't see why I should pay...blah, blah" is actually based on incorrect information. The monarchy handed over the largest source of their income to the state. Out of the money raised by the Duchy of Lancaster, the monarch receives funding. The amount given to the monarch is less than the money raised by the Duchy, so the state is actually in profit from this arrangement.
I watched documentary on TV about the queen. She always carries her purse on her left forearm. When she wants the guards to get her away from somebody she puts her purse on her right forearm. Pretty slick isn't it.
The Swans were also tasked with another job in ancient days, they are excellent anti-burglar guards. If they were still kept around the palaces & castles none of those trespasser stories we have heard would have occurred. Swans and Geese are extremely territorial and have no problem with attacking human strangers
FUN FACT: The death of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in 1791 at the age of 35 was followed by rumors that he and Salieri had been bitter rivals, and that Salieri had poisoned the younger composer, yet this has been proven false, and it is likely that they were, at least, mutually respectful peers.

I would never work for the royals, I could never do all that begging and scraping the ridiculous wealth, especially when their staff are paid sooo poorly because they should look at it as a privilege. Yeah not for me.
The people in ceremonial posts do so in addition to their "normal" roles in life. Many come from a background of service that has no reliance on the money paid by the Queen or the Crown. One would do well to remember, also, that in the First and Second World Wars, it was the British Upper Classes that suffered the greatest percentage of losses, not the "common folk". It was these loses that led to the establishment of the National Trust to preserve the Great Houses, as the death duties on the estates of the nobles literally bankrupted some families and left other families with no hope of maintaining their Estates at all.
It's not begging and scraping when you care for the comfort of others, considering the demands of her position these people bring relief to her, they are in service as we are to our own family members especially our children, I don't feel inferior seeing to their needs and comfort, I love it and hope you do too. ❤️

All in all the Queen (now aged 94) still works to serve the UK and commonwealth, and when inheriting the crown from her poor father in 1952 pledged to serve the people for life.

One other. A great uncle of mine was Apothecary to The Household. I believe that this wasn't purely an honorary role, and that he was actually a member of the royal household's medical staff, but the title, which still exists, sounds strange to modern ears

These are all simply modern jobs, with ancient titles. It's just traditional, whereas the trend now is to go for more important sounding job descriptions. For example an old fashioned 'Bullshitter' might be described as 'A documentary maker'.

As an American, I find these appointments “a window to the past”. Incredibly important that people remember their history and so glad the British continually stand behind the traditions that made them who they are today. Job Well done By the Queen. I hope people of the UK realize how important their customs and traditions are to others around the world as well.
You guys are still in a state of open rebellion as far as I'm concerned.
Today the 9th April 2021 HRH Prince Philip passed away aged 99yrs. He has given decades of service to our kingdom & he was an amazing consort to our monarch Queen Elizabeth. RIP HRH Prince Philip ✝️

I love Queen Elizabeth, admire her, there's no one who can fill her shoes.

The Queen is one of the richest women in the world, as she has her own private properties and money.
@@300books Not true.
Her private stamp collection alone is worth $130 Millions and not owned by the British people, but by her privately. All this can be verified.

The bagpipers don't wake up the queen. She's already up by nine. She gets up at around 7:30.
All seem perfectly normal to me. Fantastic traditions
Love the Piper - what a wonderful thing to do 💕
I would love to know who and where all of her hats are cared for and stored. There has to be thousands as she never repeats as I know it. Can you even imagine? Plus her matching coats..
The Queen does repeat all her clothes. The Daily Mail, having no greater News to report, calculates the Queen wears every outfit and hat on average 22 times, but mixes them up.
Thank you so much for politely responding to my comment. It is really nice to know that these beautiful items are reworn by the Queen herself. It seems the majority of times we don't get to see the lovely dress underneath the coats. Very kind of you!
harpers1niter And thank YOU for your charming reply. The Queen's dresser, Angela Kelly, who designs, makes and stores most of the Queen's clothes, recently wrote a book (with the Queen's approval) about what the Queen wears and why. @@tommoncrieff1154 I have seen the book and it has the best photo (in my opinion) of the queen ever. Standing with her hands in her pockets in a cream tweed shift dress pretending to be a model, its absolutely charming.
It is also my understanding that when she is finished wearing the items, she lets her staff take them to remake, or to give away. She is a pretty wonderful woman. I'm American, but I love her. Been to the British Isles a few times and love the country and how everyone I met, even waiters and waitress always speak of her with respect.

Junior members of the Royal Family work for a living in some business or other.

The only real criticism I have of the queen is her treatment of Diana after her death.
I wondered about the new shoes. Usually when I buy a new pair, I will wear a pair of socks and walk around the house a few times until I know they are comfortable before I wear them out in public. That way I can manage the blisters, I am sensitive with my feet though.

David Bell - I followed your advice: I am now a professor of Egyptology.
I love zoning out imagining this is my life.

The shoe break in is a brilliant idea. I’d totally employ someone to do that if i could 😅
The Swans were also tasked with another job in ancient days, they are excellent anti-burglar guards. If they were still kept around the palaces & castles none of those trespasser stories we have heard would have occurred. Swans and Geese are extremely territorial and have no problem with attacking human strangers
They do have swans again. I love watching programs about the palace.

You omitted the esteemed role of "Procurer of young boys" which was undertaken by Sir Jimmy for so many years.
Everything is so excessive and such a waste of money and resource when others don't even have the basic necessities in life. I will never understand what makes one so greedy.
These people are gainfully employed by the Queen rather than unemployed and living on the street? How.... preposterous!
