Just finished my first quilt machine binding thanks to your great video. Even with all your great warnings, I still managed to make quite a few mistakes. I've decided to just use the quilt, love it and think about whether I actually want to fix my mistakes or not. Once again, great video. I think I watched it all the way through at least twice and parts more than that.
Congrats, Mary! Job well done!! Every new technique we learn takes a bit of practice. You sew on a couple more bindings and you won't even be looking back. At least your quilt has a binding! Thanks so much, Cheryl! Generally, I'll use a 2.5 stitch length to attach binding AND a very sharp needle to get through all those layers. You can certainly use a 3.0 but I would only do this if it looked like the smaller stitch was cinching up the fabric. As long as your fabric layers are nice and flat, the 2.5 will work well. Lea Lousie, thank you for demonstrating what I consider best practice of machine binding: sewing to the back then to the front. I cringe when others demonstrate the obverse (sewing front, press to back and then stitch in ditch while saying a prayer to the quilting gods that the edge on the back will catch. Futile.There is NO WAY that wonk fails to happen on trying to catch the binding strip edge on the back. When brought to the front, you can perfectly control where your stitches are placed. A blanket stitch mirrored works well, or just plain ole straight stitch. I do lengthen my stitch to about 3.5. I also might suggest that pre mitering binding strips allows for a better visual (particularly for beginners) on the join by simply matching edges v. trying to keep the criss cross from shifting. Saves a step as no lines to draw, and it will be perfect every time so long as the seam is straight. The small Creative Grids folded corner clipper or any HST triangle is an MVP here (to include the final join). Of course the most important caution is to keep your binding clear of any corners. You'll only make that mistake once! Some "stuff" to share: (1) An edge stitch foot (if you have a machine feed system or a sole plate on your walking foot) really helps on ensuring a perfect edge stitch; (2) Wonk does happen--it's a factor of the original stitching and therefore uniformity of the fold--and it shows up on the back by the travel on the bobbin thread either between the backing and the binding. Accordingly, the contrast between the backing and the binding and one's choice of bobbin thread will determine if you see travel on the back side; (3) Sharon Schambers' binding video was how I learned to bind (except I sew to back and bring to front as I will never hand stitch). So I starch, press and glue down the binding to the back of the quilt--basically glue fit the entire binding; (4) A hot hemmer helps get perfect angling and foldover (and a crisp line for where to stop stitching); (5) your pin trick works great in corners--consider, too, eagle beak tweezers (the precision kind)--the allow you both flatten (clip hard in corner) and turn over (twist to the inside). I consider those tweezers (a whopping $8), to be an MVP for fabric handling and threading.
Thanks for all the great info, Leisa! I agree re how to attach the binding. Stitching from the front and aiming needle into the seam never worked well for me! I’m a fairly new quilter, but I’ve been told that reaching over a quilt, to trim right to left, could be tricky, in terms of squaring up. It looks like you have loads of confidence doing that. I don’t, so will rotate it and cut from bottom to top. Would that be your advice for new quilters?
Great questions, Anndalynn! There are many methods to square up a quilt and I suggest to watch some other videos, too. I rely on my ruler & mat grid to line up and cut my quilt, so I am confident the cut will be good. One thought as far as reaching across the quilt is that it may not be a steady cut with your arms stretched out. My suggestion is that you do what you are most comfortable with, consider recommendations simply as a method someone else prefers, and try a few methods to see what works best for you. I would sew the joints of the binding so that the stripes would continue without any breaks. That I think is more important than making a bias seam.
