    Its crazy how few overviews there are for the 24-105 STM even now in mid 2016. In case anyone is trying to decide like I was, between this version and the f4L... I went for this STM version as it was significantly cheaper for a brand new copy with warranty from Amazon than even a used L lens. I am liking the lens a lot, I appreciate its relatively low weight, good sharpness and fast focussing. Unless you are shooting sports, the autofocus is not going to be an issue, and if you *are* shooting sports, you would want a faster lens anyway. I picked up a 3rd party lens hood for a couple of quid on ebay, as the canon copy is a massive rip off.
    Anyway, just want to update people that this lens does seem to make sense in 2016 as an inexpensive alternative over the L lens. I think the only real reason to go with the L lens is for weather sealing at this point.

      I'm afraid the lack of reviews reflects how unexcited a lot of people were about the release of this lens, though yes, it is a solid lens.

      @rollojarvis6567 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, its a nice lens but its a crowded segment with the sigma and canon 24-105 and plenty of 24-70s. I picked it up brand new for under £300, which is a great price in my opinion, and justifies its existence among the more expensive options.

    My copy of the 24-105 STM is very sharp and the equal to my 24-105 L in sharpness. The STM lens was the kit lens when I purchased my 6D otherwise I would not have it.

      Nice. Glad it worked out well for you.

    I purchased the EF 24-105mm f/3.5-5.6 as an additional STM lens for my C100 MKII. As a one man production for our Bible study class, I need good autofocus. This lens functions with the C100 MKII’s limited facial focus feature. The STM is super quiet and works quickly. Only the STM zooms & 35mm macro STM unlock this feature on the old workhorse C100 MKII.
    I recently purchased an R6 MKII and adapted this lens to it. The 24-105mm f3.5-5.6 works brilliantly on my mirrorless camera. I also have the (L) series USM 24-105mm but I like the STM better for video.
    Thanks for an amazing review that is informative & entertaining.

    Its speculated the eventual 6D mark II will have the same AF system as the 70D and 7D mII..

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That wouldn't surprise me. It's a good system but wouldn't threaten the better one in the 1Dx, 5D3, or 5DS

    Awesome review, I',m buying a refurbished canon 24-105 f/4 for $600 from B&H, i'de rather have the constant f/4 for both video and low light on my new 70D and besides most videos can be sinked with sound so who cares about a little focussing sound.

    Hello Dustin, Can you do a review on the new 24-105mm f4 IS II?

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm scheduled to do it, but the non-kit lens hasn't shipped yet. It is only shipping in kit form with the 5D Mark IV

  • @OohlalaHolly
    @OohlalaHolly 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I use my camera mostly for video (5D Mark 3). I am considering this lens for VIDEO, but debating between this and the L. My shots are mainly still when filming my sewing videos, but I do talkin head shots and use a field monitor to focus on my face. For my TH-cam and sewing classes what do you recommend between the two?

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The only real advantage to this lens would be if you were using with a body that can autofocus during video (not your 5D3). I would probably recommend the L version unless you get this one a lot cheaper.

    • @OohlalaHolly
      @OohlalaHolly 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Is $200 cheaper worth it? I also want to invest in a 24mm prime and a battery grip, which is the only reason Im trying to be frugal, otherwise Id easily go for the L, but if you say the L is the much better investment, Ill take your word for it. I dont mind investing, I like the security.

      If you don't mind waiting a bit, Canon is about to release a new version of L lens. There might be a lot of sales on the existing lens if you are patient.

    Thanks for the review, although you are forgetting that one of the first STM lens introduced by Canon was a full frame 40mm lens. Also Canon used to make a EF 28-135mm variable aperture zoom lens(offered as a kit with original 7D), so may be a replacement for that lens and may be a new kit lens for upcoming full frame Canon SLRs.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for the feedback. I actually specifically mention 40mm pancake as the only previous full frame lens with STM in the review.

  • @MaximMuir
    @MaximMuir 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    I was wondering if this could be re-evaluated, after the near "universal condemnation" of the new 24-105mm F 4.0 L IS USM II? Curious to see how the
    cheap" STM lens hold up to the new L lens optically? You can find the STM as a white box item now pretty cheap ($299.00 US at times). I know there is a lot on your plate, but still could be an interesting thought exercise.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a valid point. I think this lens is looking better now. Canon seems to have dropped the ball on the new 24-105 II (though I haven't tested it yet), which is a shame considering what a key lens it is.

  • @eivinha
    @eivinha 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Now that I've just bought the 6DII which has DPAF, this lens makes perfect sense! Actually now I regret not getting the kit offering. Believe it or not, but I'm gonna get rid of my 24-70/2.8 Tamron lens and get this one instead. It'll also replace my Canon 80D + 18-135 Nano-USM which I got only for their great video capabilities. It was akward to have 6D + 80D (only for video). Now I'm back to full-frame only, and for those great photos I'll still have all my other lenses.
    So, yes, you were absolutely right in this video in that this lens would make more sense in the future :)

    Hi I 'm using a Canon EOS 550D and would like to buy a new lens, but not quite sure which one of the following, the Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L l IS USM or the Canon EF 24-105mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM. I was thinking about the 24-105mm f/4L, but since I have the 550D is it wrought it ?? Thanks

      @DustinAbbottTWI  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hi Dustin, thank you for your video. I am thinking about buying a 6D with a 24-105 and there is a big difference in the price between the EF 24-105mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM and the 24-105 f/4L IS USM. The STM is way cheaper! I am using them for timelapse photography and on a limited budget. Do you think the STM one would be great for timelapse? I am not using them for video, just for photography! Is there any difference with picture quality and sharpness in the images? Thank you!

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  9 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Looking at this or the 24-105L lens. brand new in my part of the world there is less than 150 USD difference (L series o fcourse is the more exp lens). I use a Canon 60D so i know STM is no advantage to me really. Apart from the slightly cheaper price is there any real reason i should use this - or in your opinion should i fork the extra little cash for it? Is the L series lens that much better?

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Callum, in all honesty I would spend the extra money and buy the L series lens. There is nothing wrong with this lens, but it does nothing really better than the L series lens and doesn't have as robust a build.

    Dustin, did I get it right?You say USM is better than STM ?

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      marioplus321 In my opinion, yes, I vastly prefer a well executed USM to STM. I pretty much detest trying to make manual focus adjustments to STM lenses.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      marioplus321 I do most manually focus recording video, with the exception of when I use the 70D body with AF Servo. I record most of my sound externally, so the clicking is less of an issue for me. My biggest issue with STM lenses is that I despise the way they manually focus.

    • @marioplus321
      @marioplus321 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, to tell you the truth I despise setting the focus manually while filming. Nevertheless,I reckon both sides of the story have their good points:)

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Zizi Possi Marquinhos Vital It is more of a general purpose lens, but will work well on a 70D body. Just know that 24mm isn't particularly wide on a crop sensor.

      @ZiziPossiFan 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      thanks. ive been using the canon 40mm to my canon 70d, i like it specially caise i dont have so much room for shooting... but now im just looking forward to get an upgrade lens, that can give nice and sharper pictures, but still can work in a small room like mine... Would you suggest me any lens for this specific case? thanks very much Dustin

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you want a crop sensor lens for general purpose try the 18-135mm STM. A more expensive choice, but better for portraits, will be the Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8. It has a wide (f/1.8) aperture at all focal lengths.Zizi Possi Marquinhos Vital

    Hi Dustin. Good analysis. I am soon moving from 70D to C100 Mark II but not sure if I go for 24-105 STM or 24-105 USM II. Although cost of USM II is high but I may decide to spend it if I think it is worth it. My main concern is noise during autofocus as I attach mic with camera. STM noise is pretty silent but I am not aware of USM noise levels for autofocus or during image stablization. Considering my requirement can you suggest (1) Is STM version better for me or USM II version. (2) How much video quality of USM lens is better in comparison to STM lens. Assuming that due to more price video quality should be better.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The new 24-105L II is much improved in noise levels while doing video AF. It still isn't quite as quiet as STM, but is workable

    Thanks for sharing.... I am hoping to jump into a full frame 6d by the end of the year and this helped alot. 6D no autofocus during video so I was like, why do I need STM... Well... more to say, but I too am likely going with the f4L lens. Now, I am just being greedy, but I was really hoping for a kit that included the f4L and an ef 85 mm/f1.8 with the 6d but no luck so far. Thanks again for sharing.

    Great review of this lens! Im about to buy my very first camera- a canon c100 mkii and I was recomended to get this lens
    I was also looking at a really high quality art lens such as
    Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 DC HSM lens for canon whch is alot more expensive but im told is a very nice lens.
    Now the lens you reviewed covers more range and is cheaper but the latter is a higher quality. Which would you say would be the best to get the most out of my camera and also if my budget stretches to both lenses is it worth getting both of them or are they just covering the same ground and thus not worth it?
    Would love your thoughts on this.
    Thanks alot!

      These type lenses are not my favorite for event work as they need a lot of light. I would recommend a used 24-105 f/4L over this one to give you the constant f/4 aperture. A lens like the Tamron 24-70mm f/2.8 might be even better.

    Hi. I am looking for a wide lens - besides my prime lens 50 1.4 and 85 1.8. on 6d. I am hesitating between this stm 24-105 or a tamron 28-75 2.8. Which do you prefer? My main purpose is the sharpness. Thanks, Dustin.

      +DSO PH I liked the 28-75 in its day, but it isn't nearly as sharp as the modern lens. I think this lens would be the better choice for what you are looking for. You have the wider aperture glass for the times you need that.

      Resford Rouzer I see. If you can get it in a kit with a 6D, I'd still go for the 24-105L. It's a proven performer and I've got a ton of great images taken with it.

      @resford1 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dustin Abbott That is sort of the way I am leaning. The 24-105L in a kit is about $600. A quick search KEH.com didn't have used ones for much better. £995 for Canon 6D and the STM lens, or £1130 with the USM lens, what do you recommend?
    I like the idea of the image stabilisation because I want to shoot a lot of video on the camera, but I notice a lot of people on youtube recommend the USM over the STM.
    P.S this is my first DSLR I'm used to shooting 35mm film, want a full frame for making films and shooting street/general use photography.
    I'd appreciate any advice

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      OneWanAndHisDog The biggest problem with STM technology is that the body you are buying can't take advantage over it at all. A USM lens like 24-105L will focus more quickly on a 6D than the STM lens will. The IS is better on the STM lens, but you will also be dealing with a slower aperture over a good portion of the focal range. At the moment my recommendation would still be the kit with the 24-105L.

    • @OneWanAndHisDog
      @OneWanAndHisDog 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dustin Abbott Thanks, another question, what about the 70d? or maybe 760d? would you recommend the USM lens for those cameras too? Will they take sharper images and focus faster? Also isn't f/4 not a lot of light to let in?

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      OneWanAndHisDog
      Either of those can take advantage of STM, but 24-105 isn't an amazing crop sensor focal length. The 18-135 STM would be a better choice there.

    If you play with gimbals, STM and AF for video will be usefull
    Also lightweight is another factor
    But,
    The price of 24-105mm STM doesnt justify people to get on STM and better second L lenses

      Well, the new 24-105L II wasn't a huge improvement, so this lens doesn't look so bad, now, particularly at a discount price.

    I think STM will be the futur best focus system, very fast and silent!!

      Most mirrorless lenses utilize some version of STM.

    Now when it is 1/3 of L version I consider it worth purchasing.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s true. Price changes a lot of other factors.

      Regular price of L version is ca 4000PLN in PL nowadays. The one of OEM version of revised lens is ca1250PLN. A box version is ca 2000PLN. That's the difference.

    Good Review Dustin, as knowing 2 years ago already, the only thing - you do look as if you have had for real too much coffee into the Morning, no offense. I am fine with this Lens.

      That's pretty bad since I don't actually drink coffee :)

    I appreciate the information. But most people just want to see the image quality of the lens and how fast the autofocus is. Too long to get to the point

    Just get a 18-135stm cheaper and you have wide n telephoto

      If you have APS-C, yes, but this is a full frame lens.

      I have all three, (L) 24-105, (STM) 24-105, & (STM) 18-135. Use them with my 5D MK IV, C100 MKII, & 90D. For video, the STMs are church mouse quiet. The 24-105 STM works great on my full frame 5D MKIV. Images are razor sharp on the MKIV with your exposure right.
