    This lens I own for some time now. I am quite happy with it, though on ASP-C sensors you cannot get real 24 mm. This lens is amazing for portraits. Even with my old Canon 1000d it performed really well, now I am using it with 70d and it is amazing!

    Usually this lens when bought with a full frame camera as a kit lens, it is subsidized by Canon.
    The best lens for travelers. Not very big not very expensive. Fixed maximum aperture for video shooting. Sharp with image stabilization and the f/5 gives chances for bokeh at longer focal length. On the barrel distortion is a problem.

  • @emisimk
    @emisimk 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    1:12 It doesn't keep constant aperture if you would pay attention to the sky. Is this problem with mkii as well? It's fine when wide open, but if you close at least 1 stop it suffers from this issue. Or it's only my version? :/

    I'm looking to get a Canon 60D at Christmas, and then hopefully get saving and buy this lens! What are your opinion on the Canon 24-70 F/4?

    • @christopherfrost
      @christopherfrost  11 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Thanks! Don't bother with the 24-70 f/4, it's a great lens but a complete rip off. For less money you can get the Tamron 24-70mm f/2.8 VC USD. At f/4 it has the same image quality, and it even goes down to f/2.8 if you need. But your Canon 60D is an APS-C camera, so you might be slightly better suited with a fast 17-50mm lens, like the Canon 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM, or the Sigma 17-50mm OS HSM - you get much wider angles.

    • @NickF14
      @NickF14 11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Brilliant. Thank you for that information! Money is of course an issue, which is why I'm looking at the 24-105 F/4. I've seen them for about £400-700 on ebay. Looking at Sigma, it's the cheapest, but having 105mm compared to 50mm as a maximum zoom range, I personally think is better than letting myself be won over by the fact it goes to 17 instead of 24. I'd love to go full frame with something like the 6D, however money is not quite up there. Thank you though, it's a great help having such informative and quick replies.

    Hey Chris, I am fan of you, you may know by now. And I love photography as a hobby. I'd also like to thank you for you've answered a lot of irrelevant and boring questions I've put before you so far. That shows you're a Godly person. Though it still may not be my capability to purchase one but if I'm a general type of photographer with no specific strains or restrictions to stay with. What would you suggest me to get if I'm stuck between Canon 24-105 f/4 and 70-200 f/? Both IS and older versions. My body is a Canon 200d with no wish to upgrade.

    1:38 What are you talking about. Sure at the wide end its zooms "faster" thats physics, at the wide end the angle changes faster than on the long focal lenght.

    • @christopherfrost
      @christopherfrost  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're half way there. Yes, the effect zooms "faster" at the wide end, but other lenses are designed to compensate for this and zoom evenly

    Hi Chris, I own a Canon 600d and I might be going on a trip to Cambodia in 2016 with my college.
    I want to do photography at Uni so I believe this would be a great chance to get photographs for my portfolio.
    I own the 18-55mm standard kit lens.
    The 40mm f2.8 Lens
    And a 70-200 f4L Lens
    For the trip to Cambodia I want a everyday lens that takes pin sharp pictures. My budget isn't huge as the trip to Cambodia will cost around £4000.
    Can you recommend a sharp 'everyday' lens for my Canon 600d? I basically want to upgrade the kit lens but get a lens that takes great photographs.
    Please help me, any advice would be appreciated.

    After watching Christopher’s excellent reviews, I purchased the Canon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 STM and later a used EF 24-105mm f/4 USM (L). The EF-S in some ways out performs the (L) but overall the f/4 (L) is sharper. However, I prefer the EF-S on my Canon C100 MKII, that STM focus is church mouse quiet.

    My question is I have what’s known in Australia as the 800D and was after a lens where I can take a shot of a person by not standing a huge distance away but be relatively close to them and also get heaps of people in the frame in some instances for group shots. I do have a wide angle lens but was wondering if the 24-105 would be compatible with the 800D as I know sensor and lens work hand in hand. Just wasn’t sure about the maths with it and if I need a lens for a crop camera that is equivalent to a 24-105 or if a 24-105 still will work with the 800D Canon.
    Cheers,
    Connor

    • @christopherfrost
      @christopherfrost  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      All Canon mount lenses made since 1987 will work on your Canon APS-C digital SLR camera, except EF-M lenses. If you're using a Canon 800D then that's an APS-C camera, so multiply the focal length by 1.6x.

    Hi Christopher i am a big fan of your work and your video review i think i already saw almost all of your videos, i just wanted to ask a question about getting a new lens for my camera i have the Canon 7D and i already have a 2 lenses Sigma 10-20 f4 and Canon 50mm 1.8 i am thinking of buying this Canon 24-105mm for my camera and i wanted also to trade off my Sigma so i can get this 105mm to a lower price, what do you think of me getting the 105mm for taking some landscape photography and some cosplay or some portrait pothograpy, i know that the 105mm for a crop camera is not that good but i think its kinda good for my 7D since i also wanted to take some video on it since it has the IS, or do you suggest to get a other lens for some landscape and portrait photography? btw i don't have a lot of budget to buy some new lens.

    Thankyou for this video tutorial I bought this lens due to it`s price at the time but have since discovered it is part of the bundle pack that Canon gave out with the 6D ( I purchased the lens and my 6D seorately) so not really knowing what this lens was for I have to say it was the BEST accidental purchase I`ve ever made and I have now found I grab this one over my 200mm Unless I am shooting a concert or something in low light .. I love this lens and I never leave home without it .. I have discovered as well the photos are brighter on my 1500D than the 6D but I still would not part with my 6D .. It`s extremely useful as it can be used on both my APSC camera which I use if I`m just out and about but when doing photography for Clients I grab my 6D so it`s nice to know that I can add this lens and my 35mm lens and I am set for the day .. my poor 200mm lens hasn`t seen the light of day since I bought this 2 years ago

    ok Chris, I have viewed the video on this lens. I have a question. I usually or lately been shooting in P mode. You mention the difference of f/stops as f/4 to 5.6. If I am shooting in P mode, can I change the apt to 5.6 while in P mode or do i have to be in full manual to do this?

      You'll need to be in manual mode or aperture priority mode (Av)

    Congratulations for the video and thank you. I have a basic t4i and bought these lens together with the Sigma 17-35 f1.8. Do you belive that they would complement each other well? Do you think that this 24-105 would fill my telephoto needs or I should look for another one? If so, would you recommend one for this cropped body?

    Hi, I want to buy a Canon EOS 80D but I'm not sure about which lenses to buy. I'm a professional pilot and want to take photos and videos at my job as well as when I do sightseeing at my destinations. One single lense would be nice, but I have no problems with having two different lenses if they are better. I was first looking at Sigma 18-35/1.8 Art, but it doesn't have any image stabilization which I want for videos. Now I am looking at the Canon 18-135/3.5-5.6, but I'm not sure. Please help me!

      Daniel Wheatley I tend to recommend the Sigma 17-50 f/2.8 OS to most people, it lets in more light and gives you more out of focus backgrounds. Take a look at my review, or my kit lens upgrade video

    I have a question, I was hoping you could answer... I have a Canon M3 and own a couple of EF-M lenses, including the 18-150, 11-22 and 22mm prime.
    I also have the EF-EF-M adapter and working on getting a 0.71x Focal reducer for EF-to-EF-M. There’s a Canon 24-105 f4 L lens being offered at a local thrift shop for 200euros and I was wondering if it would actually be a lot better than the more modern lenses I already have in the native mount (that are also a lot smaller and lighter). Could you give me a bit of an indication what I can expect from the lens ?
    (The 18-150 f3.5-6.3 starts to be f4 from 24mm and f5.6 from 43mm)

    • @christopherfrost
      @christopherfrost  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It should be quite good. I do an APS-C image quality test here - it was only on an old Canon 60D but the results were good

    • @pieterdewit5335
      @pieterdewit5335 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Christopher Frost Photography ! You would also expect it to be significantly better then the EF-M 18-150 I already own, right ?

    • @christopherfrost
      @christopherfrost  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The zoom range won't be as good, of course, but the image quality will be a little better with the 'L' lens

    • @pieterdewit5335
      @pieterdewit5335 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The lens was defective...my camera got stuck in a rebooting loop. I taped of the contacts of my original canon adapter, and that worked, but then it would be manual focus and wide open aperture and that’s not what I’m looking for. Better luck next time :)

    This will be my next L lens for my 6D.
    Anyway I have a question : I also own a 70-200f4L and I love the rendering, I would say the "touch" it gives to my pictures.
    Will I have the same with the 24-105?
    I mean, is is there a constant L rendering over Canon's lenses ? (That some people calls the L touch)?
    I need to have the same ambience on my pics, whatever lenses I use.
    Thanks for the review !

    • @christopherfrost
      @christopherfrost  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I got some questions and really needs advices
    so, I got this Canon 7D camera, Sigma 17-50 OS HSM, Canon 50mm 1.8 and Tamron 70-300 vc. I've been thinking about looking for 24-105, but not for a replacement to my Sigma. Should I go for 24-105, or both 50m 1.4 and 18-200 canon?
    so basicly I'm looking for a general purpose. so 18-200 canon just came up

    • @christopherfrost
      @christopherfrost  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Forget getting the 24-105, it's cluncky on an APS-C camera. Just replace your Tamron lens with the Canon 55-250 STM and you'll have a great kit

    • @Gieonly1
      @Gieonly1 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @christopherfrost
      @christopherfrost  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Egi Indra Wilantika Don't worry about whether it's an 'L' lens - worry about whether it's sharp. 'L' lenses tend to be slightly awkward on APS-C because they're designed for full-frame

    How does this compare to the Sigma 24-105mm? I've heard this Canon 24-105 is soft by many, though from your test it seems fine. I haven't personally found it soft myself often. Sigma seems to have a better build though.

    • @christopherfrost
      @christopherfrost  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +David Chan This lens is definitely not soft at all, as proved in my review - but because it's possible to get sharper lenses, you do get camera snobs putting it down occassionally. Look at my review of the Sigma 24-105 for a direct comparison

    Hey Chris,
    I am going Full Frame in a couple of months but I would love to purchase my glass beforehand, hence I can still work with my T3i for now. I trying to decide between 2 lens; 24mm pancake and the 24-70mm f4. I know I can't use the pancake on full frame, so would I still get great quality with the 24-70mm on my APS-c? I can be ok with dealing with minor issues until I get my full frame. (maybe I just answered my question? haha)

    • @christopherfrost
      @christopherfrost  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Estilo Antunes I'm currently testing the 24-70 f/4. It will be reasonably sharp on your APS-C camera, noticeably sharper than an 18-55 STM or 18-135 STM kit lens. But still not perfect - its best performance is on full-frame. Personally I'd go for the 24-105 - better zoom range, better value

    Love your video. I've got a 70D and thinking of upgrade to 6D, using 24-105 F4 and 50 1.8. I mainly shoot portrait. 1/3 Studio and 2/3 outdoors. What is the difference between Apsc and FF of image quality and bokeh, etc??

    • @christopherfrost
      @christopherfrost  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Generally, lenses are a little sharper on full frame in the middle and a little softer in the corners, with less chromatic aberration (generally), but with more distortion and vignetting in the corners. You get blurrier backgrounds on full frame, and bokeh tends to be slightly nicer as well. Also, a full frame camera can give you much better picture quality on high ISO pictures. Upgrading to a 6D would be a great idea - the only reason to prefer the 70D is if you have less money, or you shoot a lot of video (like I do in both cases)

    B) Also please give which one is better based on my requirement

      The 18-55 and 55-250 don't work on the 6D, they are for APS-C sensors only.
      Also for a similar price to the 2 L lenses you suggested you can get the 135mm F2L which is very highly regarded and for "photos with blurred background of long shots" it would be ideal.

    • @planetdee3587
      @planetdee3587 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They are two totally different animals. When I got into using my first DSLR (crop) in 2008, these same two lenses came into question a lot vs each other. I went with the 24-105mm because I particularly wanted that longer reach (over a more wide end). The 24mm end was not very wide but wide enough for most shots and still decent for basic landscape shots (not for getting everything your eyes are seeing at once but a more focused landscape image). The telephoto end was amazing on the go. At double the distance of the 55mm range, you really can get a lot of different shots when on the go (a bit of local wildlife and street photography with out being in people's faces). And the colors look really nice on this lens. If you are big on landscape at any given moment, this is not the lens for you. But if you are willing to work with the only lens you take out for the day, this is a workhorse.
