This was the first lens I paid over $300. I think I paid $325 brand new for it back in the year 2002. This lens served me well while I was going to school learning Photography. I practically took this lens with me everywhere I went, Travel, Street, Weddings ect. Due to the excellent range you really did ot need any other lenses, except maybe a lens to let in more light like the 50mm f1.8. You might also need a wider lens such as the 20-35mm f3.5-4.5 because I found myself backing up al lot when taking simple group shots,. The 28mm max range does not cut it for some when it comes to certain wide angle shots. I would say the 28-105 f3.5-4.5 and the 50mm f1.8 are two of the Best/Cheap lenses that Canon ever made. You will be surprised if not shocked by the picture quality of these lenses, at least I was, and many other people. When I got into Digital this lens went into hybernation for years because by then I could afford more serious lenses in Canon's "L" series line up. I eventually winded up giving this lens to my Neice along with my first Digital SLR, a Canon 30D. Hope she's enjoying it ! A few months later I regretted giving that lens away, so I picked one up on KEH for less than $100. Although this second 28-105 lens was in great shape, the Manual focus ring and the Zoom ring were not as sturdy/stable as on my first one. I can live with that since it does not affect picture quality, but it makes you think twice about selling, or giving away beloved lenses...
I got so lucky. I was poking around the camera bin of a 2nd hand store in Bangkok. I picked-up a grungy, black Canon EOS 7, a 35mm film model sold only in Japan near the end of the SLR era. It was dirty and sticky as the rubberized grip material had deteriorated but attached to it was the EF 28-105 "Ultrasonic" lens and looked to be in pretty good condition. I walked over to the cashier, handed the camera to her and asked "How much?" She couldn't get that gross sticky body out of her hand fast enough and with a look of total disgust told me 300 Thai Baht, about $9. I didn't even argue and walked out with what has since become one of my favorite lenses on my Canon 650D. and with an adapter, on My Sony A6000. Oh, and the old EOS 7 body actually cleaned up nicely. I put on an older 50mm lens I had and gave it to a needy student who wanted to take a beginner film photography class. Winners all around.
I LOVE this lens on full-frame. I picked it up for £cheap from eBay and the one I have might be a golden sample or something, because I simply have no issues with it. Focus is snappy (6D and now R8 bodies) at long as there is reasonable light, in very low-light it can hunt a bit but that's typical of even L glass from that era. Zoom is smooth and useful focal ranges, and while *yes* the corners are a tad soft at 3.5 it's fine at 4.5; you could treat it as a f/4.5 fixed-aperture and forget about the corners. I reach for this as a walkaround lens and as long as there is light, the images are beautiful... it pairs incredibly well with a light black mist filter too. I have no idea what the problem is with APS-C... I am starting to think it's a manufacturing issue with the base design because there's no reason at all for an APS-C sensor to be muddy where a FF is sharp, it's all just pixels.
I agree with you 100% .. This lens is super awesome for its crazy low price! I mean its unbelievable! I was in love with the nifty fifty and used it for years, but now I am using the 28-105mm .. it is so much more convenient .. in other words .. it is a lot of lenses in ONE! Aside from all that .. Thank you so much for not having any annoying background music track and thank you for your neat review :)
The images you get from this lens on a 5d Classic are amazing. If you shop a little bit you can get a good 5d classic and this lens for under $500 Canadian.
I had one of these on my Canon 10D - it is strikingly acurate, very precise optics and nearly no deformation. Its ideal for high definition portrait and the zoom range is fantastic. You dont need more then this lens.
Nice!! i got the Canon 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM for $100 used. the lens was dirty from the inside dust and cat hair. but thanks to TH-cam i was able to open it and clean the glass and lube parts of frame. Its the best lens on my canon t3i. but i can always use it on my Canon 6d mark II. I too would recommend something like this on a daily use camera.
Could you please tell me what is the situation with the zoom lens creep on this lens? I need it for overhead shots so it is really important that the lens doesn't creep. Thanks!
I mean just think about it! Incredible. But here’s the thing! Here’s the thing. Here’s the thing. But here’s the thing. I mean just think about it. But here is the thing! Think about that for a second!
I managed to get an EOS3 body in perfect condition, with this lens, a Tamron tele, and a few other bits and pieces - all in original boxes with manuals for........ £140....... best bit of business i've ever done!
got mine for 20 quid the other day. Gotta say im having real trouble getting focus with it too. not sure if its the lens, the ancient 300D im using or both? Is there anything that can be done? is it back or front focusing do you think? after watching your video im guessing that this is the kind of lens you want to use when its sunny out since you said it gets very good at F8? Think this is the answer to my question. Thanks again.
Hello, I want to buy another lens for my APSC camera and I have two options: the Canon 28 105mm or the Canon 28 135mm stabilized. I like them both because they are cheap, but I was also thinking of the Canon 24 105 Mark 1, but it is more expensive. Which lens do you recommend?
Hi there Great vid! I'm your new subscriber. Do you recommend this lens or 28-135mm? I have a canon 5d classic, just recently bought so i am a little confused. I like doing street photography, travel and portraits. Do you have any other lens recommendations for canon 5d classic? Your recommendation will be highly appreciated, thank you
I've had this lens for over 20 years and used on my Rebel (35mm film). I haven't used this in over 10 years though, now with the digital age. My plan is to use EF-M adaptor to use this on my M200. New lenses are too pricy for me, now to afford. The rubber/plastic focus ring was deteriorating as the oil from the ring was seeping out. Just took some alcohol and rubbed it dry.
I don't personally have experience with mirrorless cameras, but since the m50 has an APSC sensor, I'd be hesitant to use this lens. Sharpness is grotesquely poor below F5 on APSC, so unless (like me) you use your lenses at narrow apertures most of the time, I'd hold off
The minimum focus distance isn't too fantastic to be honest. It's good for general purpose, but if you need super close macro, I'd go 50mm f/2.5 (yes that exists lol) if you want something similar in price and focal length but designed for macro
JordanPhotoAudio lol Really like the nifty fifty? Sorry im new at this and for real I have been looking for a macro lense for daysssssssss 😖😖 lol Thanks for answering and the one that "dentist" recommend is the 100mm canon but thAts way to expensive for me 😖
It's actually a different lens than the famous 50mm f/1.8! This one is designed specifically for close range! And to my knowledge, it's wayy cheaper than the 100mm, but that may have changed over the years
I haven't tried it, but I'd imagine quite poorly, to be honest. As we can see by the sharp decline in image quality from FF to APSC, this lens doesn't do well with smaller sensors. It really was designed for full frame cameras. If you ever go full frame though, this lens is a great bargain!
OMG - i This lens reminds me of the beginnings where I got an EOS 6D and this glass - that was just brilliant and yes I still use the glass - but this time on a Sony A7RII (yes the AF works well) and I am satisfied - of course there are "better" lenses but as "always-on" lenses this is brilliant.
I guess this lens is really good as a cheap full frame lens. I guess it is less impressive for aps-c camera's. But as I understood from other videos, the image quality over all just was much less impressive compared to the build quality, autofocus system and the better than usual aperture for this kind of lens. But maybe you have the II or second version and the original one is just less quality with the images. So I guess don't buy it with an Aps-C camera and with full-frame it's probably fine to buy

I've been shooting outdoor city events would you recommend this for that type of shooting? Up to 10ft away from the subject sometimes 20ft
did you test the Canon 28-135mm F/3.5-5.6 IS vs this one?
Man I don't think I've ever wanted anything as badly in my entire life as I want this lens. I cannot wait to order it on eBay in a few days!!!!
Enjoy it! It's really a pleasure to shoot with :)

I have that lens and it is amazing ..
I can not belive how that can be so good on 5d mark 2 ..

I just already bought one in eBay, and also have a 5D Mark II, so, by reading your post, I made a good purchase?

Very pleasent working with that lens .,
Here is a thing..... I am old enough to say I bought it when it was first released. Trust me it was not a 100 bucks....
Nice! Would you consider it a good lens?
Yeah, but all that goofy hand waving makes such a compelling case.
Just got one for £25 however the autofocus doesn't work. Doesn't really bother me as i almost always focus manually. So for me it was a great deal.
Are you using apsc? I’ve got the 1200D and I’m thinking to get this as in my budget

Minimal if any, especially for an older lens. Get one in good condition and it shouldn't be a worry!

Great lens on my fullframe. Notice: vignetting, but can be solved by using lightroom or PS.
Vignettin hasn't actually been too prominent on my copy of the lens! Granted I basically only shoot at f/8-11 though
I installed the lens calibration via the EOS desktop app to my 6D and now I don’t get the vignetting anymore
Is it good for video graphy
Like ef 18-135
