2018 Kia Rio vs Honda Fit Comparison: Which Subcompact Hatchback Is Better?

  • It may be hard to find a really bad car these days, but it might be even more difficult to find a car that’s attractively affordable. We have two cars here that swing in under $20,000 and it’s weirdly exciting to pit them against each other.

    The fully loaded Kia Rio EX hatchback maxes out at under that price point and the Honda Fit LX we have also squeezed under that price tag. But which one is the better buy? It’s not always a clear-cut answer because some buyers might want the most car for the money, while others will want a car that doesn’t feel as low cost as it actually is.

      Or because they typically only go with Honda models, ergo every one of their comparison videos with ANY of Honda’s models. This sounded like a weird paid advertisement for the Rio because we all know the Fit is going to last until the earth collapses but maybe They felt showing true bias to Honda was becoming a bit much.

      Jesus H Medrano Lets look at the year 2000 and 2015. In 2000 the average American made 40.5k and the average car cost 24.75k. That means in 2000 it took 61% of the average salary to buy your average car. In 2015 Americans averaged 56.5k, and a car cost an average of 33.5k. That is now 59% of the average salary, 2% LESS in just 15 years. Now compare what you got in a car 15 years ago vs now. Even cheap cars can freakin stop for you these days. You want a super cheap car? Get the base model of these cars or something like a Nissan Micra for like 12k.

    I just sold my 2016 Scion iM hatch and bought a 2018 Kia Rio hatch. The infotainment system is easier to use, easier to look at. The front air dam is higher (no ground contact), the noise level is lower. the gas milage is better, the hatch closes with a "thunk" (not like made of tin.). The torque converter transmission feels solidly connected between engine and wheels. Instrument panel dims with a push button switch, It took me weeks to do same in Scion. Great car!

    I don’t care if the Fit is ugly, or a bit noisy. My last Honda had 418,000 miles on it and still ran perfect. 17 years in the sun however was making all the interior plastic pieces crunchy and brittle and the replacement was getting too expensive. The buttons that roll up the windows, the knob to pop the hood , mirror adjust button it got too much $100 here, $75 there at least once a month something plastic broke. I found a 2013 Fit with 12,800 miles and my mechanic bought the civic to flip. He could fix everything cheap. I like the Fit mostly for the cargo room and my Dobermans, but it doesn’t get the 40 MPG my Civic HX got, and the Fit seats are not the most comfy. But the cargo room is to DIE FOR! And I got a “new” 3 year old car for a song. It was pristine. It’s also like the guy said, not the most stable front end. You have to be careful not to yank the wheel. It’s very responsive. If I had my choice, I’d rather have my Civic except for the amazing cargo room. And since most of my driving is with at least one large dog, it’s worth it. Cheap to insure, cheaper to drive than an SUV or minivan. I drove Dallas to Riodosa in 36 hours with an 80 pound Male Dobe and 4 puppies in crates. And a friend in front. Everyone had plenty of room.

Ourisman Honda Laurel - ask for Laura and Rob Mill. Love love love the car. Sure there’s some cabin noise but I think the Fit is great to drive and my commute is long. How a car looks and how "luxurious" it is are way down on the list of things that matter to me. I drive a Fit because it fills my needs. I fit in it comfortably (I'm 6'2"), has a nice cargo space, if needed, is well built, reliable and economical. Oh, and it has air conditioning, a decent sound system and cruise. Everything else doesn't really matter. "Cool" is way, way down the list and screams "I have a small one!".

For what I know, the base Rio at 16k is on par with the base Fit at 19-20k and for a lot less. Also the Rio's standard heated leather steering wheel and heated seats, bluetooth, rearview camera and overall better design and driving dynamics (yes, you heard me right, all that for 16k CAD) make it a better car but that's just me.

    hmm...I think the Fit Sport/EX 6spd fixes 'some' of the Fit's short comings. The steering wheel may not be heated in those models, but at least it would be leather and you get alloy wheels plus some extra do-dads in the EX...plus all of these come with the sensing pkg too and for a grand or some more than the Rio. Speaking of Rio, I'd rather pay up and get the Soul+. It isn't that much more, but gives you more vehicle in all dimensions.

      He should have compared a base trim with another base trim. Not a base trim against a higher trim. He made the Kia look and sound better because it’s a higher trim. Obviously the higher trim you go, the nicer it sounds. Now if he did a base Kia against a base Honda then okay no argue there.

    I had a Rio a few year back. Mine was basic without all of the gadgets. My biggest disappointment with the Rio was so-so gas mileage. The mileage was mediocre. My Ford Escort from the 80’s averaged about 45 mpg on the highway. My Saturn from the 90’s averaged about 40. My Rio never made 35 mpg. I expected much better. My newer loaded Hyundai Elantra beats the Rio by about 10 mpg all the time.

    With all due respect, the cars are not dorky but the person doing the review is the problem. Many people would love to own a vehicle like the Rio or Fit. These two cars are perfect for the budget conscious consumer that wants and needs a small car with a great reliability record and low price.

    If long-term reliability is important for you, there is no contest - Honda wins. Just ask any mechanic how many Fits they ever worked on. Only Toyota comes close. But if you want a lot of bells and whistles for cheap and only keep the car for as long as it is covered by warranty then buy those other brands.

    • @mattjones3257
      @mattjones3257 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      style 20 It doesn't. It starts at 16K with a manual. Once you add a CVT and Honda Sensing (brake and lane keep assist with adaptive cruise control), it's $18,000. The Rio doesn't offer adaptive cruise on any trim. That's not to say this is a bad car but dinging the base fit for looking cheap with plastic hubcaps doesn't make sense. Obviously, the press gets stuck with whatever the auto manufacturers give them, but this didn't do a good job of explaining the pricing structures for either of these cars.

    • @Phrancis5
      @Phrancis5 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Long-term, the Fit will save fuel money and far far better reliability/resale value. I would nix the LX CVT with Honda sensing and just go for the Fit Sport 6sp manual for about the same price. It will be peppier and fun to drive.

  • @aprilk141

    Why would any competent driver want any of the carp that the reviewer didn't like about the fit?
    I have a 2010 manual Fit, suspension is tight, steering is nimble... I don't want heated seats because it feels like getting on a recently occupied toilet.
    For the record I added window visors, short ram intake so I can hear the engine better, weather tech laser mats, and 17 inch wheels so I can slide around in Minnesota winters. I actually like this car better than my 1989 Acura.
    If I wanted to be a spoiled baby I would just Uber everywhere.

    This comparison is not right/fair. You’re comparing a Honda base trim with a somewhat higher trim Kia? The vehicles should be the same or close to the same trim. If both cars were the same trim for their brand/model then okay that makes sense. But when one car is base and the other car is a higher trim....that’s not a true comparison.

  • @poppyatcs4529

    YOU'RE COMPLAINING ABOUT NO DRIVER ASSISTS IN THE KIA? That's a PLUS not a negative. Less stuff to go wrong. As a driver, you have to be alert: make shoulder checks when changing lanes, look left and right before entering the road from the parking lot, follow the speed limits... it's called driving. Kudos to Kia for still making proper cars.
