After looking at places to retire from Crescent City to Florence we decided on Mapleton and a home with 12 acres. Weather is usually warmer than on the coast and way less wind!
I want to retire in the Oregon Coast. I love Florence and I’m thinking of buying a house there soon. Love the small town feel. I love how vibrant downtown is too. I am so ready to make the move.
Florence for me. The dunes are otherworldly. I'd live in Astoria. Gold beach is cool, rather that than Brookings. Coos bay no - though clamming for gapers in nearby Charleston is one of my favorite Oregon experiences :) Boardman is absolutely stunning. Shore Acres is wild and great too (including a formal garden - like it needs one).
Samuel Boardman :) :) :) Did you talk about Old Town Florence, I may have missed it? Some interesting shops along the river there. Also, Gold Beach for the win! Easily my favorite place in the world. Some shops along Ellensburg as well as the Port of Gold Beach.
NONE of the hospitals on the Oregon coast are exceptional. Newport has a Good hospital with lifeflight pad the great facilities in Corvallis and Portland.
Please do your research on how hard it is to get proper health care in Brookings! Ask the nurses and the elderly. It takes average 6 months for a new patient appointment. There are no major hospitals nearby at all and in order to get to one the roads are dangerous from falling trees to coastal landslides to fog. If you have a heart attack or stroke you may be in big trouble!
So much left out regarding Florence. Please do your own research on what is offered in and around the Florence area. It was voted one of the best 10 small towns to retire nationwide at one point. It is a tourist town for a reason. People come from all over to visit and participate in the many activities. The people who live in Florence are a city of angels. I miss it every day.
I agree! City of Angels. The residents of Florence (when I lived there) were the absolute Best! I dreamt for years of moving back but it wasn’t meant to be.
Coos Bay area has some great state parks, but the cities themselves have a lot of homeless and street people, and crime. And you really need to drive to get around. Brookings and Florence are great options.
I grew up in Brookings and I was surprised when I returned for a class reunion to see how much Harbor had grown. Why wasn't Harbor included in your video? Is it not classified as a city or town? Our High School was named Brookings-Harbor High School. And since Harbor is walking distance from Brookings, a very large Fred Meyer and other businesses makes Brookings feel huge. Lol And I didn't see anything about Harris Beach. My sister and I and our friends took guitars down there and sang songs. It was very special. Thank you for your videos of the coast that is part of my life!
Hi Carolyn, good point. I think a lot of people conflate the two. In other words, people really don't distinguish between Harbor and Brookings. Particularly people coming from out of town. It's all just Brookings. We have a new video for Brookings coming soon. We'll be sure to cover Harris Beach. Thanks for watching.
Coos Bay has a population of about 16k per the 2020 census. North Bend (right next door) has a population of about 10k. Coos County as a whole has a population of about 65k.
I hear you but it's tough to find a place on the planet that isn't susceptible to natural disasters. We've been ok for centuries and likely will continue to be.
All it takes to survive is elevation (about 100 feet), not being along a creek (tsunamis travel further up rivers and creeks), good soil that won't liquefy either under your home, or on a hillside above or below), and some good preparation (preferably able to survive off the grid and having a reliable water supply, as well as a good stash of food).
My wife is interested in Brookings & Coos Bay and I’m interested in Yachats & Bandon. But what’s equally important is the acreage for my shop, greenhouse, garden and chicken coop etc.
Skip Coos Bay. Florence, Bandon, Newport and Yachats are my favorite places to visit from Eugene. This guy doesn’t sound like he’s from around here. Florence has music at night, a casino and a great little restaurant called The Waterfront Depot.
That's also my impression. I travelled a lot along the Oregon coast, and my favorite spots are exactly as yours: Florence, Bandon, Newport... Bandon surprised me by its tiny but so nicely organized history museum. The impression is still with me... I remember the fotos of their local football team through the years... I was surprised by changes in players uniforms, especially by the length of pants... Bandon is precious to me... Florence is very romantic thanks to its art galleries and music performances... Prone to tsunamis threats, though, because of low grounds...
"Cat", here! As a salesperson, you are, really, missing a very strong selling point for Brookings (and, by the way, you never seem to mention Brookings sister city, Harbor? The area is more properly referred to as Brookings/Harbor, separated by the Chetco river?)! That is, in Crescent City California, better and gads more of them, doctors, medical facilities, entertainment, night life, shopping, grocery stores, etc., than Brookings/Harbor has to offer just 20+/- statute miles to the south!?!? Should be emphasizing this! All the good that living in Brookings/Harbor Oregon offers with all the amenities that Crescent City offers, just one cup of coffee to the south!
Florence is great for science junkies. There is a great aquarium and ocean research center that open to the public and welcome volunteers. The last time we were there we spent a fun week feeding the sharks and learning how hard it is keep an octopus contained. An don't forget the world famous exploding whale event in 1970.
@@michaelpopp6340 Right! Old age strikes again. ;-) Florence, exploding whales (& a gazillion of in-laws). Newport, fun critters to chase and feed. Thanks. My wife just realized that it has been over 30 years since we were last there.
Fantastic video, I've been thinking Gold Beach to buy a house, I like what you said about walking the beach..I have a dog 🐕 and want to know if dogs are allowed on the beach sand for walking? Is it very windy there, in a unbearable way? Thank you so much!! One more thing, just curious which town did the guy in the video pick?
The guy in the video has family in Gold Beach so he might be biased :D Both towns are great. It comes down to personal preference. Dogs are allowed. The wind isn't bad. Both have great beaches but Gold Beach has longer stretches of beach. email us info@thehometeambrokers.com if you want us to help start with your home search.
Gold Beach is windier than Brookings, as Brookings is in more of a cove. I grew up in brookings and it’s known as the Banana Belt. Gold Beach is definitely a sleepier town. Port Orford is the third town in Curry County. Just remember, things and people move slower there. The unofficial motto used to be, “no hurry in Curry.” All of the Oregon coast is windier than Brookings! I used to cover Florence to Brookings for my job and lived in Coos Bay-North Bend, so I kinda know, lol..
"Cat", here! When first married, the wife and I wore out two previously owned motorhomes driving from Cabo San Lucas, Baja Peninsula (drive off into the ocean) to Homer Alaska (drive off into the ocean) 12 years in a row. Following the frost line north (always Spring) and south (always Fall). Staying in-the-cool zone each way! When done with that, we searched the lower 48 states looking for the ideal place we thought was most like Alaska. The 2.8 miles between Cape Sebastion and Crook Point, known as the Myers Creek/Pistol River area, on Highway 101, 10+/- miles south of Gold Beach and 20+/- miles north of Brookings is "that area" most like Alaska! My wife, Cathy, the family fisherperson, says the area even has the same fresh and salt water fish.........just a bit smaller in size! The ever changing always amazing moods of both land and sea are, possibly, second only to Big Sur in beauty.........maybe? But, getting to the beach areas are few and far between there. Not like the open public beaches, here!
Crime all along the coast is very low. You'll find higher crime within the more densely populated towns such as Coos Bay/North Bend. Mostly theft. Violent crime is very low almost anywhere you go. What areas are you interested in?
It's complicated. There are thousands of tax zones. Really rough numbers; usually shakes out to 1% of the homes value. Oregon does have a law that prohibits them from going up more than 3% a year.
Great Town to retire. You have everything you need there. Just a matter of if you like the layout and the vibe. Also, a great location if you like to visit other towns, because you’re sandwiched right in between a bunch of great towns and things to see/don’t that are close by.
I am a former resident of Coos Bay and that town is a shit hole. I left in 1980 and never looked back. The big thing to do on a Friday Night was go to the Marshfield Pirate's either football or basketball game. Pretty much that is all those people do in that town or they drive through blaring their horns after they got an elk.
Coos Bay has two casinos. The hospital is well... you'll probably leave there with something you didn't have when you got there. Its the bike theft capital. At least two women were murdered there last week. Not a great place.
Seth, your presentation sounds like you cater to upper class retirees! why you don't address retirees like myself-fixed on a certain SS/Pension amount, but not extravagant!
. The converstation about swimming was laughable. We do not swim in the ocean, it would have been nice for you to mention the wonderful lakes\, Florence alone has over 10 lakes in the area.
People interested in looking for retirement or second homes are interested in VIDEOS !!!!.......Dialog is ok , but show more of your subjects while talking.
NONE of the hospitals on the Oregon coast are exceptional. Newport has a Good hospital with lifeflight available to the great facilities in Corvallis and Portland.
It has gotten more expensive. I would not call it dumpy or depressing anymore. It's really cool and walkable to me. It my escape: if we get a random sunny weekday in spring or winter in Portland, I head to Astoria and walk around.
Oh. please. CoosBay, Say the word goosel Now say Coose to sound like goose, It stops at the letter S. It is not 2 coos. Sorry my sister lives there. I know how to say Coos. It's an indian word. You are welcome. I lived in Lincoln City for 20 years. Moved to Dubuque Iowa 15 years ago. Miss it every day but now I live near family,
"Coose"?🤣 You're sister's playing a joke on you. We had an office for seven years there. Can't say I ever heard that one. Reminds me of this th-cam.com/video/Mcl80SN4aLY/w-d-xo.html
Subjective of course. Bandon is great. I think Gold Beach and Bandon get slightly overshadowed by Brookings. The thinking for a lot of people is; if you're going to be on the south coast, might as well be Brookings. Not too small. Slightly better weather. Still close enough to major hospital.
Has he ever been to Oregon? Most of Oregon has lots of sunshine! Just not coast or Valley. He doesn’t seem to know anything about most of these towns. Make sure you look elsewhere for good information. But what do I know, just a 5th generation Oregonian.
Lincoln City now one of the most dangerous towns in Oregon. Look up per capita crime rate and you'llbe shocked. Florence crime rate quite high too. . Thanks Indian casinos. 😝😝

People like this are the reason that most of the young people here on the coast are losing hope of ever owning a home. Prices are up at least 150 percent in the last ten years because of this type of exploitation. More traffic, more demands on services, more entitled newcomers, but no new living wage jobs has created a sense of resignation among the youth here and a sense that their future will take them away from the place they know and love because they cant afford to live there. Bend is a perfect example of the way in which people like this systematically promote and escalate the price of real estate until a way of life is erased. All the funky cool quiet little Oregon beach towns are being overpromoted and exploited by people just like this. Have some decency and give it a rest.
I'm flattered you think I'm able to influence at scale the largest financial decision most will ever make. I don't have any prior experience making these videos and often I think our audio/footage isn't even that great. And here you are thinking our videos are moving mountains. 🤣 The bend migration started well before any reatlors had youtube channels. Check the dates.
There's NOTHING special about florence at all...You'd better love tons of rain, among other negative things if you want to stay in florence; No apologies!
@@weeknders Great list. We have a house just outside of one towns that you mentioned. Charleston is a great little spot that most don't know of(definitely stop by the marina and get some fresh crab). As for retiring; I don't know many retirees that are considering retiring in most of those towns(and we get people reaching out to us almost daily to inquire about retiring on the coast). All certainly could work. Depends on preferences. Newport might be the best from your list as most retirees want to be as close as possible to shopping and medical care. Manzanita is great be price prohibitive for many - also a ways from lots of shopping. Same with Yachats. Seaside is a resort town of course. Love it there but not the most retiree vibe many are seeking. Little surprised we don't get more inquiries about Gearhart but it also will be price prohibitive for many. Thanks for weighing in.
@@weeknders I know some. Would be a great spot to retire IMO. I think the reason why we don't personally hear more inquiries is because a lot of people are coming from sunshine states and are worried about the overcast on the north coast. They want to stay further south(Brookings is our #1 search town) where the expect more sun. But I'm with you. Sun has been great on the north coast the last few years too. I haven't looked at the data but it's felt like we've had way more sun recently.

Coos Bay has two casinos. The hospital is well... you'll probably leave there with something you didn't have when you got there. Its the bike theft capital. At least two women were murdered there last week. Not a great place.
The video would be more enjoyable were the lip smacking omitted.
Check out our new videos - they're mostly edited out :D
Seth, your presentation sounds like you cater to upper class retirees! why you don't address retirees like myself-fixed on a certain SS/Pension amount, but not extravagant!
. The converstation about swimming was laughable. We do not swim in the ocean, it would have been nice for you to mention the wonderful lakes\, Florence alone has over 10 lakes in the area.
We have a video coming that will dig into all the great lakes along the Oregon Coast. Thanks for watching.
Nobody in their right mind goes to the Oregon beaches to swim. Malibu it ain't. Too cold.& then there's the shark's.
Not enough video of the subject areas,, too much of you.
Agreed. More on the subject area coming. Our next video will mostly be drone and driving.
People interested in looking for retirement or second homes are interested in
VIDEOS !!!!.......Dialog is ok , but show more of your subjects while talking.
Where can a single guy get a little mini getaway place where it rains alot for cheap
Coos Bay is going to be the least expensive area along the Coast.
@@LivingOnTheOregonCoast Coos bay is hot though right? I need some moisture on these lips!
@@LivingOnTheOregonCoast dude you werent lyin, Coos Bay got some decent pricing. Whats the catch with the Coos
@@muhdooluhahblungata491 Coos Bay has a lot of cloud cover most of the year.
NONE of the hospitals on the Oregon coast are exceptional. Newport has a Good hospital with lifeflight available to the great facilities in Corvallis and Portland.
Write a script. You keep repeating yourself over, and over and over. Put up pictures of the towns instead of you.
You'll find more footage of the towns in our newer videos.
Astoria ? Seriously not a place to live
Expensive and mostly dumpy
It has gotten more expensive. I would not call it dumpy or depressing anymore. It's really cool and walkable to me. It my escape: if we get a random sunny weekday in spring or winter in Portland, I head to Astoria and walk around.
Florence has a Casino.....
Take a shot everytime he says "Oregon Coast".
Whoa now. Don't want to give anyone alcohol poisoning!
@@LivingOnTheOregonCoast 😂😂😂 just finding you guys, moving to eugene/cottage Grove before the end of the year so Im doing some video research 😎❤️

Oh.
Reminds me of this th-cam.com/video/Mcl80SN4aLY/w-d-xo.html
show us the streets and talk much less. We need to see, not listen
Thanks for the feedback. You'll find more driving and drone footage with our newer videos.
Florence has casino ,dont pay .well.
Ok, dude, you look JUST LIKE Jethro on Beverly Hill Billies!!!
Max Baer Jr. was awesome in the B.H. show.
you forgot Bandon
Love Bandon. Very under the radar. Many probably want to keep it that way 😄
@@LivingOnTheOregonCoast Very true
@@LivingOnTheOregonCoast Yes we fell in love with Bandon and just bought our house. Moving in in June
What, no Bandon?
Subjective of course. Bandon is great. I think Gold Beach and Bandon get slightly overshadowed by Brookings. The thinking for a lot of people is; if you're going to be on the south coast, might as well be Brookings. Not too small. Slightly better weather. Still close enough to major hospital.
@@LivingOnTheOregonCoast I believe Bandon has the least average rainfall of any place on the Oregon coast.
First 2 mins is waaayy too long and intro photo/video graphic is Dizzy.. cut the crap otherwise great info
Thanks for the feedback. We take it into consideration when making new videos.
Has he ever been to Oregon? Most of Oregon has lots of sunshine! Just not coast or Valley. He doesn’t seem to know anything about most of these towns. Make sure you look elsewhere for good information. But what do I know, just a 5th generation Oregonian.
The video you're commenting on is about the Coast. Thanks for watching. 6th generation here.
Don’t spread the word about the sun 😉.
Lincoln City now one of the most dangerous towns in Oregon. Look up per capita crime rate and you'llbe shocked. Florence crime rate quite high too. . Thanks Indian casinos. 😝😝
Show more of the town areas and less of your face. I watch many of this type of show but you show more of you than the area your showing. I got tired of looking at you instead of the area you are talking about and quit the show after 16 min.
Apologies for subjecting you to that. 🙈We have driving/drone tours on our channel for most major towns if you want to see more of the area - Seth : th-cam.com/users/livingontheoregoncoast
There is no where in America to retire
LEAVE AMERICA AS SOON AS POSSIBLE
I nihilist I see. Bye Felicia.
Because you say so? LoL.
Poor entitled baby, if you can't afford to live on the coast then move inland! lol
There's NOTHING special about florence at all...You'd better love tons of rain, among other negative things if you want to stay in florence; No apologies!
What are the pros and cons of florence to you? This is the first time ive heard someone not like it 😳😳
Boring Boring Boring 😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢
I wouldnt live in any of those towns. Way better spots to live on the Oregon coast.
Do tell
@@LivingOnTheOregonCoast Gearhart, Seaside, Manzanita, Yachats, Newport, Charleston.
@@LivingOnTheOregonCoast ton of retirees on Seaside
@@weeknders I know some. Would be a great spot to retire IMO. I think the reason why we don't personally hear more inquiries is because a lot of people are coming from sunshine states and are worried about the overcast on the north coast. They want to stay further south(Brookings is our #1 search town) where the expect more sun. But I'm with you. Sun has been great on the north coast the last few years too. I haven't looked at the data but it's felt like we've had way more sun recently.
Very helpful! Thank you
